As a result, the cocoons are boiled or steamed while the pupae remain inside," said RFA.

The practice dates back at least 5,000 years and spread from China to India, Korea, Nepal, Japan and the West. Traditionally, silk making involves boiling cocoons of the silkworm to unravel the silk filaments.The investigation found that despite non-violent varieties like Ahimsa Silk and Eri Silk being around for decades, the cruel process of boiling or steaming a cocoon even as the pupae remains inside continues to this day.<h2>The livelihood</h2>The inherent cruelty in the process of making conventional silk remains a well-known reality. The advocacy group also raised concerns about labour conditions across parts of the supply chain. The RFA investigation highlighted concerns extending beyond the treatment of silkworms themselves. Many studies and reports on the silk industry have raised serious concerns about how workers are treated. Problems include child labour, unfair or exploitative working conditions, and health risks at the workplace. What risks? People who work in reeling and processing silk often have to deal with very high temperatures and repetitive, physically demanding tasks. They may also suffer from breathing problems and come into contact with chemicals that are used during the growing and manufacturing of silk. These conditions can harm their health over time.

Mulberry farming also creates environmental challenges. To support large numbers of silkworms, farmers often need intensive production, which can involve heavy use of pesticides. Nuggi was then taken from his owner’s Auckland house, where police found another bunch of dogs, which were eventually given over to the SPCA.

As per reports, Nuggi died of a liver haemorrhage even after losing 8.8 kilograms (19.6 pounds) of his body weight in the care of SPCA. The organisation claims that an autopsy disclosed the dog’s additional health issues, including Cushing’s illness and liver problems.

Nuggi’s owner pleaded guilty to failing to provide for the dog’s medical, behavioural, and physical needs, as per the statement. Based on the owner’s confession, the Manukau District Court in Auckland sentenced the owner to two months in jail and a fine of NZD 1,222 ($720).&nbsp;

Veterinarians were unable to detect Nuggi's heartbeat with a stethoscope because of his extreme weight, according to the SPCA statement. The dog also had a lot of skin growths, especially on contact regions like his elbows and tummy, and his claws were enlarged.&nbsp;Nuggi also had conjunctivitis.

Todd Westwood, SPCA Chief said that the dog was "drastically overfed" and "clearly" did not have access to&nbsp;proper care. "Nuggi was one of the most obese animals we've ever come across," Westwood said in a statement.

"Sadly, we see animals on a daily basis that are underweight, starved or malnourished, but it's equally heartbreaking to see a helpless animal that's been severely overfed," he further said.

As per SPCA, the pet dog was fed around 10 pieces of chicken every day along with dry food. Nuggi allegedly struggled to travel around 10 meters to the car when veterinarians took him away from his owner, pausing three times to gather breath.&nbsp;

"Part of being a responsible dog owner is providing your pet with an appropriate diet and daily exercise, which was clearly not the case here. His owner continued to overfeed him until he could barely walk. This is unacceptable," Westwood added.

Hence, the man (whose name is not yet revealed) has been arrested on suspicion of criminal damage, night poaching, the killing of a brown hare in the closed season and the killing of a Schedule 1 bird.&nbsp;

Taj Mahal, the famous monument of love in India's Agra, recently became the location of a heart-wrenching incident. Tourists visiting the legendary monument left their dog locked in a car in scorching heat, which unfortunately lead to the poor pet's death.&nbsp;

At Taj Mahal's Westgate Parking, passersby noticed a dog locked inside a car with zero ventilation. The helpless dog's owners had left it shut in the vehicle in scorching heat with no water.

Witnesses captured the poor animal's plight and shared videos of it online. Authorities soon responded and a UP Police unit promptly reached the spot but was unable to save the dog's life.

As per Times Now, a parking attendant revealed that this is the second such incident in just three days. Allegedly, just a couple of days back, four people accompanied by a Labrador-breed dog had visited the monument. Against the parking attendant and a guide's advice, the dog was left shut inside the parked car while the accompanying humans enjoyed a tour of the Taj Mahal.

In India, cases of neglect and animal cruelty are on the rise. Cases where pets are left exposed to weather elements, be it scorching heat or freezing cold have become commonplace.

Ten persons, who participated in horse-cart racing on a busy road in central Delhi, were detained by the Delhi Police on Sunday.

As per reports, at 4:30 pm, authorities learned of the race on Jawaharlal Nehru Marg, a stretch in the Darya Ganj neighbourhood in Central Delhi. The people were known to have been engaged in racing from Rajghat towards Delhi Gate, Civic Centre&nbsp;and moving towards Paharganj.

Following the prompt, the police sprung into action and cordoned off the area near the Kamla Market police station. The people involved in the illegal horse-cart racing were detained by the Delhi police for breaking the legislation that forbids using animals in racing.

In the video which is now going viral, one can see horses pulling carts in great speed while onlookers cheer on. Four horse-carts and 2 two-wheelers were seized and horses are to be handed over to MCD, said Delhi Police Sunday.&nbsp;

More than 1,000 dogs were found dead on the grounds of a house in South Korea's Gyeonggi Province. According to a report by The Korea Herald on Monday (March 6), the property is located in Yangpyeong county. Police have been investigating a man in his 60s on the charges of violating animal protection law, which states that anyone who abuses or is cruel to animals would be subject to three years in prison or fined $23,100 (30 million won).&nbsp;

The man said he collected abandoned dogs and starved them to death.

However, animal rights activists have alleged the man was paid by dog breeders to get rid of dogs who could not get pregnant anymore or whose commercial value dipped, the report said.

Four dogs were rescued from the house and are undergoing treatment at a clinic. The&nbsp;dogs were suffering from malnutrition or skin disease, and two of them were in critical care, the report added.&nbsp;

Speaking to a news channel, a representative from Care,&nbsp;an animal rights group,&nbsp;said the man was paid $7.60 by dog breeders to take care of dogs, and he just locked them up and starved them to death from 2020.&nbsp;

Residents in the neighbourhood looking for their lost dogs found the house full of dead animals last Saturday (March 4) and reported the matter to the police. Many local broadcasters showed blurred images of the dead dogs in cages, sacks and rubber containers on the ground in the yard.&nbsp;

The Care members, who observed the scene, said the bodies had rotten and created a layer on the ground, on top of which more dead dogs were placed to create another layer and so on.&nbsp;

In the last 10 days or so, multiple mutilated cat carcasses have ben found in Japan’s Saitama City sparking&nbsp;fear&nbsp;among its residents and prompted authorities to ramp up security measures in schools to protect young students from the potential cat killer.

According to a report by CNN, the first carcass of a brown-speckled cat was found along the Arakawa River in the city where a woman found a severed head and paws while the rest of the body was found on a nearby road. In mid-February, the police found a cat’s jaw on the grounds of an elementary school tied with a piece of string and hanging from the playground bars, reported VICE World News.&nbsp;

Furthermore, by the end of the month, residents found two more mutilated cat carcasses, one on the field and another one on a&nbsp;road in Saitama City. While there is no indication that these gruesome acts may also involve human victims, the city has been on edge because of its history with these kinds of killings.&nbsp;

In recent years, the Japanese city also&nbsp;jailed a killer who would torture animals like cats and post videos of his actions online. Similarly, in the late 1990s, another Japanese city Kobe witnessed children being murdered after a 14-year-old boy with a history of animal cruelty killed a 10 and 11-year-old and injured three others.&nbsp;

In reference to the case, an official who has coordinated patrol efforts on behalf of the Saitama educational board told VICE World News, that this has particularly raised concerns&nbsp;among the parents and said “that was a dark time in Japanese history”. He also said how children have been asked to alert their teachers if they notice anything out of the ordinary.

An 80-year-old woman speaking to Japan’s public broadcaster NHK&nbsp;said that she felt "scared and uncomfortable" after hearing about the cat killings&nbsp;and that her concerns went beyond animal welfare, reported CNN.

Since these carcasses have also been found near schools, teachers have been asked&nbsp;to escort children home and walk in large groups, reported NHK. Meanwhile, the city’s police have stepped up patrols and are investigating the cat murders as violations of Japan’s animal protection law.&nbsp;

In Japan, it is a crime to kill or injure animals which is punishable by up to five years in prison or fines of up to five million yen ($36,600). The country’s police detained at least 170 people, in 2021, for suspected animal abuse which was the highest since the records began in 2010.&nbsp;

A barrister who founded the Hong Kong Animal Law and Protection Organisation, Kim J. McCoy told CNN how some cases of animal cruelty have “evolved into more serious offences against humans.” He added, “There is empirical evidence to support the direct correlation between those who commit animal abuse and those that commit other more violent crimes on people.”

It’s Greece’s Citizens Protection Minister Takis Theodorikakos who took to his social media to announce the arrest of the man. In his post the minister wrote, “The Greek Police arrested a person who kicked and threw a kitten into the sea. Violence against animals is unacceptable.”

He further added, “The government has passed a strict law to protect animals from abuse which is now in place, but in any case it is a matter of humanity and culture. I am deeply saddened by those who mistreat animals and those who tolerate it. I heartily congratulate those who raised the issue. The reason now belongs to Greek justice.”

A man from Arizona in US is facing animal cruelty charges for allegedly freeing alive animals.

According to the Mohave County officers, around 183 animals were found frozen, including dogs, turtles, lizards, birds, snakes, mice, rats and rabbits.

Michael Patrick Turland was arrested on Wednesday after an inspection was conducted at the property following a complaint from a woman that she never got her snakes back which were lent for breeding.

The inspection was conducted on April 3 after Turland had vacated the property in Golden Valley.

“Deputies and Animal Control Officers entered the property and located the freezer, which contained approximately 183 frozen animals of different breeds. Officers located dogs, turtles, lizards, birds, snakes, mice, rats, and rabbits. Several of the animals appeared to have been frozen alive due to their body positioning.

The property owner said 43-year-old Turland had moved out of state, leaving the freezer in the garage.

The deputies attempted to contact Turland and his wife by phone, but did not get any response.

But on Wednesday, they were informed that Turland returned to the residence.

“Deputies and Animal Control Officers responded to the residence and Turland was taken into custody without incident,” the statement said.

“When interviewed, Turland eventually admitted to placing some of the animals in the freezer when they were still alive," the statement said.

Turland was arrested on 94 animal cruelty counts, the sheriff’s office said.

According to local media reports, his case has not been taken up by the court yet as he was held in jail till Thursday night.

Golden Valley is a community of around 8,000 in western Arizona, around 18 miles from the Nevada border.

The judgement, which was hailed by the animal rights activist and criticised by breeders, has put an end to a longstanding debate in Norway where the breeders are accused of going to extreme levels in the quest for a cute dog at the expense of the animals’ well-being.

The ruling was prompted by a case brought in November 2021 by Animal Protection Norway group out of concern for the dog breeds’ numerous, critical health issues.

Inbreeding has caused the two breeds to develop a “disease guarantee”, a long list of hereditary illnesses that affect most individuals, the group argued.

“The man-made health problems of the bulldog have been known since the early 20th century. This verdict is many years overdue,” said Ashild Roaldset, the CEO of Animal Protection Norway in a post published by the group following the ruling.

“For several decades, sick dogs have been bred in violation of Norwegian law. Our dogs [have] been victims of systematic and organized betrayal of our four-legged friends. Today it has been confirmed that this is illegal.”

More than half of all bulldogs born in Norway over the past 10 years had to be delivered by caesarean section.

"The race's genetic inability to give birth naturally is reason alone for bulldogs not to be used for breeding," the district court judges wrote in their ruling.

The judgement stated that a conviction does not imply a ban on serious breeding of Bulldog or Cavalier, as serious and scientifically based cross-breeding could be a good alternative.

PCA Act

The Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act dates back to 1960. The law which commenced in the year 1974 stipulates punishment and/or fine for a multitude of animal cruelties, but animal activists describe the punishments as ‘meagre’ at best.&nbsp;According to this draconian law, the highest fine for a first-time offender is limited to merely fifty rupees.

In an effort to condemn heinous cruelty to animals, animal activists using #NoMore50 seek&nbsp;the amendment of this law.

Almost all of the Nine thousand&nbsp;tweets were addressed to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, demanding stronger penalties for animal cruelty.&nbsp;

In February of this year, the Union Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying had proposed some amendments to the sixty-year-old law.

However, despite the proposal's introduction, no action was taken during that&nbsp;session of the legislature. Therefore, in order to push for the passage of these amendments, animal activists are mobilising just before another session of parliament starts.

To date, no amendments have been made to the law.

According to a previous statement by Chinny Krishna, former Animal Welfare Board of India (AWBI) vice-chairman, in the year 2011, a draft Animal Welfare bill was framed by AWBI and submitted to the Ministry of Environment and Forests (now, Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change).

However, no action was taken by the government.

What are the proposed Changes?

Previously, the penalty for any untoward act of cruelty attracted fines ranging from Rs 10 up to Rs 50. This includes beating, kicking, torturing, starving, overloading, overriding, and mutilations done to an animal.

Replacing that, as per&nbsp;the proposed draft, if an act of an individual or an organization causes an animal to die, they could face a penalty of up to 75,000 rupees or triple the cost of the animal.

The charity,&nbsp;Lady Freethinker, conducted an independent investigation for three months and found nearly&nbsp;2,053 videos in which animals have been deliberately harmed for entertainment. The animals in these videos can also be seen to be under&nbsp;severe psychological distress, physical pain or have been killed, as per the charity.

As per the investigation, in these videos, humans have made animals fight or tortured in cold blood for their own entertainment. Animals have also been hunted using cruel ways, and in some cases, the animals can also be seen being eaten alive solely for entertainment purposes.

Videos like these have been spotted on at least 150 channels which have more than 1.2 billion views. The charity claims these videos are in violation of YouTube's community guidelines. "YouTube must do a better job at monitoring and removing all videos that violate its terms and standards, alerting local law enforcement to illegal content, and holding channels accountable for their actions with suspensions and terminations," said Nina Jackel, founder and president of Lady Freethinker.

The investigators also found 17 videos which show fake animal rescue missions which have been planned by the creators. In such videos, animals such as cats are put in life-threatening situations, such as in front of a snake, and then human intervention is seen at the last moment, hailing them as rescuers.

YouTube has appreciated the efforts taken by the charity and has assured a detailed investigation into this matter. The tech giant claims to have removed&nbsp;185 of the 2,053 videos spotted by the charity. The company has asked for more details from the charity, after which an investigation will be launched into the matter and appropriate steps will be taken as soon as possible, YouTube claimed.

"YouTube’s community guidelines prohibit any violent or gory content intended to shock or disgust viewers, including the unnecessary infliction of harm on animals. We routinely remove videos and comments flagged by our community that violate those policies, and in many cases we terminate the accounts of users who violate our guidelines," a spokesperson for YouTube said.

Model-actress Sunny Leone is back in news with an almost nude photoshoot for animal rights Tuesday. Sunny with husband Daniel Weber were seen posing nude, covered in tattoos for an advertisement against animal cruelty for People For The Ethical Treatment Of Animals (PETA) India. In a statement, she said, "We live in a world with such amazing advances in vegan materials and options for everyone. There is no reason for anyone to support cruelty in any form. Synthetic leather, mock croc, and even faux fur are some of the many great options." PETA India posted a photo of the couple on Twitter. Years before he walked into a Texas church and gunned down 26 Sunday worshippers, Devin Kelley proved capable of fearsome violence, convicted of fracturing his infant stepson&#39;s skull and accused of beating his dog with his fists.

In 2012, while stationed at an Air Force base in New Mexico, Kelley was court-martialled and sentenced to a year&#39;s confinement for abusing his wife and child. The Air Force&#39;s chief prosecutor at the time told the New York Times and NBC News that Kelley broke his stepson&#39;s skull.

Two years later, soon after he was given a bad conduct discharge for his crime, Kelley was cited for animal cruelty after neighbours told police he viciously punched his dog outside his trailer home, according to a report from the El Paso County sheriff&#39;s office. Court records show the case was dismissed after he paid a fine.

His behavioural problems appear to have started much earlier. A former girlfriend said Kelley engaged in years of harassment, bordering on stalking, after a brief relationship nearly a decade ago, and classmates from his Texas hometown described a &quot;loner&quot; who became increasingly disturbed as a teenager.

Domestic problems may have triggered Sunday&#39;s shooting, as well. Authorities said on Monday that he had sent threatening text messages to his mother-in-law, who sometimes attended First Baptist Church in Sutherland Springs but was not there on Sunday when Kelley opened fire.

&quot;There was a domestic situation going on within the family and the in-laws,&quot; Freeman Martin, a spokesman for the Texas Department of Public Safety, told reporters. Kelly was found dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound after fleeing the church.

Harassment allegations

The former girlfriend, Brittany Adcock, said she dated Kelley nearly a decade ago when he was 18 and she was only 13.

The relationship lasted for about four months, but Kelley would harass her with phone calls from blocked numbers and Facebook messages from fake accounts for years afterward, she said in an interview.

Adcock said she once called the police to try to file a complaint and had to change her number to stop Kelley&#39;s calls.

&quot;He just started getting really weird,&quot; Adcock, now 22, said.

He last contacted Adcock about six months ago via Facebook, when he sent her a topless photo of someone else he had found online and appeared to think it was her, she said.

Kelley graduated from New Braunfels High School in Texas in 2009 and joined the Air Force soon thereafter, serving on a base in New Mexico. He and his first wife divorced in 2012, the same year of his court-martial, and he was discharged in 2014.

That year, he married Danielle Shields in Texas, and they lived in Colorado Springs for a time before returning to New Braunfels, according to public records. Attempts to reach Shields or her parents were unsuccessful.

Mental health problems

Former schoolmates of Kelley said he may have had some mental health problems even as a teenager.

Reid Mosis, 26, who attended school in New Braunfels with Kelley from 6th through 9th grades, said in an interview that Kelley was &quot;always a bit of a loner.&quot;

&quot;I know his parents had him on heavy doses of meds in middle school,&quot; Mosis said. &quot;A lot of friends that knew him said he was too sick in the head to deal with by senior year of high school.&quot;

In recent years, Kelley shared posts on Facebook about atheism and his assault weapon, Mosis said. A cached photo of Kelley&#39;s Facebook page, which was deleted in the wake of the shooting, showed a photo of a rifle under which Kelley wrote, &quot;She&#39;s a bad bitch.&quot;

Another New Braunfels native, Courtney Kleiber, said on Facebook she was close with Kelley in middle and high schools and that he had slowly changed from a &quot;normal&quot; kid into one with emotional or mental problems.

&quot;Over the years we all saw him change into something that he wasn&#39;t,&quot; she wrote. &quot;To be completely honest, I&#39;m really not surprised this happened, and I don&#39;t think anyone who knew him is very surprised either.&quot;
