We, humans, are a curious species, always trying to find something more. More than what we know, what we can see, and what we have. Our search for more is endless and it has expanded beyond our planet. In this quest, humanity has tried to contact aliens several times. The quest to talk to the 'green little men' actually started more than a century ago.

All the times humanity tried to communicate with aliens

Unidentified flying objects (UFOs) or unique airborne objects fascinate the world. Till now, several sightings of UFOs have been made. Some call it the proof of existence of extraterrestrial life, while say it's some natural phenomena. “Flying saucers”, which UFOs are usually referred to as, have inspired many Hollywood flicks. But the real question is, what do we know about UFOs? Let’s explore the answer.

Decoding UFOs: What do we know about ‘flying saucers’?

It is a known fact that Jupiter's moon Europa is considered a prime candidate for extraterrestrial habitability in our solar system. Jupiter has a lot of moons but if we talk about Europa, it is the smallest of the four Galilean moons orbiting Jupiter.

It is a known fact that Jupiter's moon Europa is considered a prime candidate for extraterrestrial habitability in our solar system. Jupiter has a lot of moons but if we talk about Europa, it is the smallest of the four Galilean moons orbiting Jupiter. Europa, which was discovered in 1610 by Galileo Galilei, is said to be the sixth-closest to the planet of all the moons (nearly 80) of Jupiter. Two Voyager spacecraft by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) flew by Europa in the late 1970s and found strong evidence of a global liquid water ocean that is apparently beneath its icy shell. However, studying the samples of water is slightly difficult for scientists due to the thickness of the icy crust, which is perhaps as thick as 30 kilometres. ALSO READ | Here's what happened to Moon's surface when a massive asteroid slammed into it over 4.3 billion years ago The knowledge of such a thick icy crust previously suggested that it might be difficult to study and analyse the ocean and it might be out of reach of future space missions. However, in a breakthrough, a new study published on Tuesday (April 19) in the journal Nature Communications suggests there is potentially another path to sampling the deep waters of Europa. The study noted that the thickness and thermophysical structure of this ice shell is poorly constrained. The detailed structure and dynamics are critical for "understanding both the fundamental geophysical processes and habitability of Europa". ALSO READ | Sun blasted Mercury with a plasma wave. What does it mean for Mercury's atmosphere? "Double ridges are the most common surface feature on Europa and occur across every sector of the moon, but their formation is poorly understood, with current hypotheses providing competing and incomplete mechanisms for the development of their distinct morphology," a part of the study noted. To explain it, scientists presented the discovery and analysis of a double ridge in Northwest Greenland with the same gravity-scaled geometry as those found on Europa. The study noted that using surface elevation and radar sounding data, it has been observed that the double ridge was formed by successive refreezing, pressurisation and fracture of a shallow water sill within the ice sheet. And as per the scientists, if the same process is responsible for Europa's double ridges, then the findings of the study hint that shallow liquid water is spatially and temporally ubiquitous across Europa's ice shell. "Because it's closer to the surface, where you get interesting chemicals from space, other moons and the volcanoes of Io, there's a possibility that life has a shot if there are pockets of water in the shell. If the mechanism we see in Greenland is how these things happen on Europa, it suggests there's water everywhere," said geophysicist Dustin Schroeder of Stanford University as quoted by Science Alert. Breakthrough in search for aliens? What does a habitable ice shell on Jupiter's moon Europa mean?

It is perhaps a scary thought for humankind to consider itself the only intelligent life sitting on this blue planet hurtling in space. Perhaps search for intelligent alien life has been a major preoccupation of scientific communities and even governments for decades. Projects after projects have not yielded any sign of aliens but relying on the statistical probability of there being intelligent life on at least one of billions of planets in space, we've pressed on with our search.

But a comprehensive sky scan has again met with disappointment as intelligent alien life was not found.

Detection of radio waves is one of the ways to search for alien life. By our scientific logic, a civilization achieves radio transmission early in its technological development.

The sky scan was carried out using Murchison Widefield Array (MWA) in Australia. The sensors to receive any radio signals were pointed at our galactic centre as it is the place within our galaxy with maximum concentration of stars and planets. So the probability of detecting intelligent alien life is higher.

Radio waves are also produced naturally by celestial bodies. So the sky scan looked for technosignatures. These are effects generated by use of technology by the alien civilization.

The scan was aimed at 144 exoplanetary systems but it also completed a blind scan of 3 million stars near the galactic centre. The researchers involved in the serach mentioned in their paper that no technosignature was detected.

But does this conclusively prove that there no alien life at all? No.

Non-detection of technosignatures in this particular sky scan does not mean that there are no more technosignatures to be detected. If not advanced, life may even exist on alien planets in the form of microbes. We are just yet to stumble upon a conclusive proof.

There are several candidates in our solar system itself. Scientists think that Europa, the icy moon of planet Jupiter has liquid oceans under its surface that may support life. Scientists also think that microbes exist in clouds of Venus.

Humanity is soon to get fresh 'eyes' in the sky. James Webb space telescope was launched on December 26. This will be humanity's main space telescope over the ageing Hubble space telescope. We will soon be able to see corners of universe that were unobservable to us before this. Will we find an alien spaceship flying in deep space? Time will soon tell.

Our constant search for answer to whether we are alone in the universe involves detection of water. The simple liquid has a great significance in finding life in space as it has cradled life on our very own planet. Water has been found and even predicted to be present elsewhere in out solar system but now scientists have found a galaxy that represents farthest distance from Earth where water has been found.

Scientists from University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign have found evidence of water in a galaxy named SPT0311-58. The galaxy is 12.8 billion light-years away from Earth.

The scientists used Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array in Chile to gaze at the galaxy. The galaxy is located in younger part of the universe and it is about 780 million years old. Considering universe is 13.8 billion years old, the galaxy is fairly young.

Lead investigator of the study has been quoted in media reports as saying that evidence of presence of carbon dioxide has also been found in this galaxy. The scientists have also found that stars in this galaxy have completed their life span relatively quickly. Considering oxygen comes from dying stars, this galaxy would have oxygen too. This also logically explains presence of water.

So should we fear aliens invading Earth because their star died out? Even if they are travelling at the speed of light (300,000 km per second) it will taken 12.8 billion years to reach us. It can hence be said that we are safe for now.

The research continues to either confirm the presence of life or find an alternative explanation.

Scientists have discovered more than 4,300 exoplanets. Some have been large gas planets akin to Jupiter. Others have been smaller, rocky Earth-like worlds, the kind considered candidates for harboring life, but currently available scientific instruments tell us little about their atmospheres.

Previously, researchers spotted a planet orbiting a star relatively near our solar system that may offer a prime opportunity to study the atmosphere of a rocky Earth-like alien world - the type of research that could aid the hunt for extraterrestrial life.

The planet, called Gliese 486 b and classified as a ‘super-Earth,’ is not itself a promising candidate as a refuge for life. It is thought to be inhospitable - hot and dry like Venus, with possible rivers of lava flowing on its surface.

But its proximity to Earth and its physical traits make it well suited for a study of its atmosphere with the next generation of space-borne and ground-based telescopes, starting with the James Webb Space Telescope that NASA has slated for an October launch.

NASA's administrator and former US senator Bill Nelson recently opined on the ongoing debacle about the existence of aliens, propelled partly by the intelligence reports released by US authorities on UFO sightings.

“The report basically says what we thought. We don’t know the answer to what those Navy pilots saw but they know that they know something”, Nelson told CNN this week.

“They tracked it and locked their radar on to it. It moved quickly from one location to another”, he added.

The classified report mentions Unidentified Aerial Phenomena (UAP) but fails to identify the objects and is largely inconclusive. “The report tells us that there have been 140 of these sightings”, Nelson said while adding that NASA scientists are currently assessing the footage from a scientific point of view.

“My feeling is that there is clearly something there. It may not be an extraterrestrial [object]”, he added while suggesting that these aircraft could belong to the adversaries of US, which he called extremely concerning.

The NASA administrator talked about the agency’s ongoing programmes that focus on finding extraterrestrial life, while suggesting that they could find no technology linking the objects to alien life.

“People are hungry to know”, Nelson said while referring to the Navy videos which caused a fury on social media and ignited global interest in aliens potentially lurking in the shadows.

“Are we alone? Personally, I don’t think we are”, Nelson said while stressing on the vastness of the universe.

On the possibility of alien life elsewhere in the universe, Nelson spoke about recent evidence of conditions necessary for life to persist. “We are already finding examples of other planets around other suns”, he said.

Speaking briefly about the upcoming November launch of the James Webb Telescope, Nelson said that the tech “will peek back in time… almost to the beginning”, which could answer a lot of questions about the formation of our solar system and perhaps the universe itself.

Gravitas Plus: UFOs, Aliens & Science

There is no evidence that unexplained aerial phenomena spotted in recent years by US military personnel are aliens, an upcoming government report quoted by The New York Times Thursday said, but officials still can't explain the mysterious aircraft.

The newspaper, which cited senior administration officials briefed on the findings of the highly anticipated report, said they were able to confirm the unusual vessels were not the product of secret Pentagon technology.

No evidence mystery UFOs seen by US Navy are alien spacecraft: Report

New footage of an Unidentified Flying Object (UFO) is going viral on social media. In the footage shared by filmmaker and UFO enthusiast Jeremy Corbell, a flying object can be seen disappearing into the water off California.

According to Corbell, the footage was filmed by US Navy off San Diego’s coast in July 2019. A dark saucer-like object can be seen hovering above the ocean. In the video, military personnel can be heard saying “it splashed”. Soon after, the object disappears into the ocean.

The United States Department of Defense confirmed to NBC News that the clip was indeed filmed by military personnel. Corbell says that the UFO is “transmedium capable” - implying it can travel through both air and water, which could help explain how it disappeared in water.

Now, the Pentagon’s Unidentified Aerial Phenomena Task Force will review the footage to ascertain the source of the flying object.

Corbell wrote on his website that the aircraft could not be found upon entry into the water. Reportedly, a submarine was used to search for the aircraft but nothing was recovered.

Leaked US Navy clip shows UFO disappear into water off California's coast

Reports of UFO sightings increased tremendously during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, according to the National UFO Reporting Center (NUFORC).

According to NUFORC, UFO sightings across the US increased by about 1,000 during 2020 when compared to 2019.

The total number of sighting in 2020 stood at over 7,200 with the highest spike recorded in the US state of New York, where the sightings almost doubled. The jump in sightings may be due to a lot of people staying in during the pandemic, and many leaving cities for more open spaces to get away from the virus, as reported by the New York Times.

Most of the sightings were reported in last March and April, when lockdown measures across the country remained the strictest. New York City also peculiarly witnessed a spike in sightings. Sightings of UFOs or Unidentified Flying Objects in NYC this went up by 31 per cent in 2020 from 2019. 46 such objects were spotted in the skies of the city, compared to 35 such sightings in 2019.

UFO sightings in US rose sharply during the pandemic, data reveals

Mars has enthralled us since time immemorial. The red dot in the night sky has represented God of War in some cultures and it has also given rise to tales of alien life. Mars is a planet that comes closest to resembling Earth in our solar system. The planet has an atmosphere, is almost the same as that of Earth, and it is just next door in the Solar System. It's no wonder that it appears to be the most likely candidate to start our hunt for alien life.

Perseverance, NASA's rover, is currently on the Martian surface. It is now hunting for signs of life on Mars' surface.

SuperCam, a bundle of instruments aboard Perseverance has already collected samples of Martian rocks and soil. It is hunting for signs of past life on the planet that is now just barren wastelands (as per our current understanding at least).

It is already known that Mars had liquid water on its surface millions and millions of years ago. And the crater in which Perseverance made its landing in had a lake millions of years ago!

Where there is water, there is life. At least that's what our logic here on Earth says. Is it perfectly true even in case of celestial bodies? That's what is being ascertained.

The return to Earth years from now of the rocks and soil it retrieves "will give scientists the Holy Grail of planetary exploration," Jean-Yves le Gall, president of France's National Centre for Space Studies (CNES), which mostly built the mobile observatory, commented via a YouTube broadcast.

These "pieces of Mars", he said, may "finally answer this fascinating and fundamental question: was there ever life elsewhere than Earth?"

Our movies and books have been full of Martian invasions against Earth. Based on what we are hearing from Perseverance now, no invasion against Earth is being planned from the surface of Mars right now.

Jokes apart, even signs of ancient life on Mars would be a big discovery.

This will prove that we were not alone in this universe, and that life always finds a way even in harsh conditions.

United States intelligence agencies have less than six months to tell Congress everything they know about Unidentified Flying Objects (UFOs). In December, when President Donald Trump signed the $2.3 trillion coronavirus relief bill into law, he also set into motion a 180-day countdown for the authorities to reveal all they know about UFOs, or perhaps aliens!

As part of this, the Director of National Intelligence, along with the Secretary of Defense have less than six months to provide an unclassified report about "unidentified aerial phenomena" to the congress and committees of armed services.

The authorities have to reveal the information as part of the section in the Intelligence Authorization Act for 2021, which is a constituent provision of the spending bill.

As part of this information gathering, the report must also put out all data corresponding to the "centralized analysis of all unidentified aerial phenomena", along with designating an official for overseeing the process.

In addition, the report must pinpoint any potential threats to national security posed by UFOs, while attempting to analyse whether any of the adversaries of the US may be involved in the sightings of UFOs.

Avi Loeb, a Harvard professor, is claiming the shiny objects coming towards the Earth from space are not celestial objects or rock formations, but 'space garbage' being thrown in the atmosphere by aliens.

Loeb is the Chair of Harvard’s Department of Astronomy and says the shiny rocks coming from the space are proof that life beyond humans exists in this atmosphere.

The 'space garbage' was dropped by the aliens in 2017, according to professor Loeb's latest book 'Extraterrestrial: The First Sign of Intelligent Life Beyond Earth', and that object recently flew into our solar system and resembled a shiny rock.

He claims on September 06, 2017, an object from the Star Vega, a star located about 25 light-years away, the object entered our atmosphere and moved closer to the sun on September 09. the same object then flew past Venus at a speed of 58,900 miles per hour, then "moving swiftly toward the constellation Pegasus and the blackness beyond" and then inching towards the Earth on October 07.

The object labelled as 'Oumuamua' — which is Hawaiian for 'scout' — was a small 100-yard-long object and was the first interstellar object detected inside our solar system.

An interesting belief about this object is that some scientists believe this object is not bound by the sun's gravitational pull.

"What would happen if a caveman saw a cellphone?" Loeb asked in his book. "He's seen rocks all his life, and he would have thought it was just a shiny rock."

Loeb also explains in his book that the astronomers have concluded it reflected sunlight after every eight hours, giving them an opportunity to make a safe assumption that the object takes eight hours to complete a full rotation.

The professor also offers the physical appearance of the object as a proof for his claim. The object is almost ten times longer than its width, which is a rarity and thus proves Loeb's point that this object is not an ordinary space object.

"This would make ‘Oumuamua’s geometry more extreme by at least a few times in aspect ratio - or its width to its height - than the most extreme asteroids or comets that we have ever seen," he explained.

"Oumuamua was unusually bright. It was at least 'ten times more reflective than typical solar system [stony] asteroids or comets," he continued.

However, what gave the final nod to Loeb was the excess push away from the sun for the object.

Neighbour's trash: Harvard professor claims celestial objects are space garbage

Expecting to find alien life soon? Well, we hate it to break to you but that may not be possible, at least that’s what a study suggests. The study claims that aliens in our galaxy may have perished, rather caused their own down fall by progressing too much, a study posits.

Researchers at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory and California Institute of Technology earlier claimed that the scientific and technological progress of a civilisation would cause its downfall.

The research added it “will inevitably lead to complete destruction and biological degeneration”. Based on this, they extrapolated that all life in the Milky Way Galaxy may have been obliterated by now, not my external sources, but by its own devices - development.

The paper which was posted online on Arxiv earlier this month, researchers said that based on this, extrapolation suggests that intelligent life may have destroyed themselves.

The scientists also posited that humans are yet to develop such societies, or in other words reach their peak. The paper added that the aliens existed at least 8 billion years ago after the formation of the gallery, while humans showed up at least 13.5 billion years after the creation of the Milky Way.

However, not all hope is lost, at least outside of the Milky Way. Earlier in December, an international team of scientists has received radio signals from a planet far far away. The planet is located in the star system named Tau Bootis which is 51 light-years away. The system contains a binary star and an exoplanet.

Also read: Aliens calling? Scientists receive radio signals from faraway planet The research added it “will inevitably lead to complete destruction and biological degeneration”. Also read: Aliens exist but in hiding, until mankind is ready, says ex-Israeli space head The scientists also posited that humans are yet to develop such societies, or in other words reach their peak. The paper added that the aliens existed at least 8 billion years ago after the formation of the gallery, while humans showed up at least 13.5 billion years after the creation of the Milky Way. Aliens in our galaxy may have perished due to too much progress, study suggests

Alien-hunting has been a favourite topic among scientists and the public alike. While public has the luxury to go wild with its imagination about aliens, scientists need to rely on hard scientific proof in order to confirm the existence of alien life and extra-terrestrial intelligence. Scientists continue to look into the space to study it primarily and to seek signs of whether we are not alone in this universe.

Aliens calling? Scientists receive radio signals from faraway planet

New York City is considered the cultural hub of the world - a global city. But now, it seems like the aliens have their eyes on the city home to Broadway.

Sightings of UFOs or Unidentified Flying Objects in NYC this year have gone up by 31 per cent from 2019. This year, 46 such objects were spotted in the glitzy skies of the city, compared to 35 such sightings in 2019.

Brooklyn saw the most number of alien encounters at 12. Coming in second was Manhattan with 11, and Queens with 10, as reported first by the New York Post. Staten Island saw eight such encounters, and Bronx saw five.

On July 21, 2020, a Staten Islander saw an “oval” aircraft which reportedly sounded like a helicopter. However, the witness claimed that it unleashed a surge of radiation in their body.

On June 8, someone from the Bronx say 30 objects flying in perfect syncronity across the night skies, resembling stars in movements.

The New York Post also reported another case in Brooklyn whereby “orange/metallic” orbs were seen standing by the Jamaica Bay Area.

On February 21, a witness claimed to have seen UFOs dancing in Manhattan by the Statue of Liberty.

Even though such first hand accounts are compelling, they’re unable to provide further details. And witnesses tend not to reveal their identity.

Recently, a former Israeli space scientist claimed that aliens exist among us, and that they have been waiting to show themselves when the time is right. Haim Eshed told an Israeli newspaper that the US and Israel have been dealing with aliens for a long time, but they remain a secret because he says "humanity isn't ready," the Jerusalem Post reports.

An ex-Israeli general and current professor Haim Eshed has said in an interview that aliens are real, and they're secretly working with our governments and biding their time.

Haim Eshed told an Israeli newspaper that the U.S. and Israel have been dealing with aliens for a long time, but they remain a secret because he says "humanity isn't ready," the Jerusalem Post reports.

Haim Eshed, who helmed Israel’s space security program from 1981 to 2010, reportedly said that “Trump was on the verge of revealing [aliens existence], but the aliens in the Galactic Federation are saying, ‘Wait, let people calm down first,'”.

“They don’t want to start mass hysteria. They want to first make us sane and understanding.”

Haim Eshed reportedly told the Israeli publication Yediot Aharonot he can confirm the existence of aliens because he claims they've been among us for a damn long time. He even says they have their own organisation the "Galactic Federation."

Until that day, aliens have secured an agreement to keep their moves under wraps, said Eshed, noting that the extraterrestrials come in peace.

“They have been waiting for humanity to evolve and reach a stage where we will generally understand what space and spaceships are,” said Eshed, according to the Jewish Press.

Eshed further said, “There’s an agreement between the US government and the aliens. They signed a contract with us to do experiments here. They, too, are researching and trying to understand the whole fabric of the universe, and they want us as helpers. There’s an underground base in the depths of Mars, where their representatives are, and also our American astronauts.”

Aliens exist but in hiding, until mankind is ready, says ex-Israeli space head

It has been long believed that the United States has first hand access to aliens, and that they constitute part of the secrets that lie in Area 51, a highly classified US Air Force Facility in Nevada.

Turns out, former US President Barack Obama had sought knowledge of aliens, and reached out to his officials to find out how much they know about aliens. Did he receive an answer? Yes. Is Obama willing to share details about extraterrestrial secrets with the rest of us? Unfortunately, no.

Appearing on the Late Show with Stephen Colbert this week, Obama was asked by Colbert about the kind of classified information he sought during his presidency.

Obama confirmed to Colbert that he asked officials about aliens, but to no avail, as the rest of us will never find out.

On the topic of UFOs Obama said - “Certainly asked about it”.

When Colbert pressed him for more details with a hungry “And?”, he responded with “Can’t tell you”, and followed with a “sorry”. In short, Obama knows something that we don’t. But will he tell us? Most probably not.

Colbert also processed his response along similar lines. “I’ll take that as a yes”, he said to Obama, while adding that if there were no aliens, he would have said that there were none.

“You just played your hand”, he added, while jokingly saying “I thought you were a poker player”.

In classic Obama style, he topped off the alien conversation with “Feel free to think that”. Earlier, former US President Bill Clinton had told Jimmy Kimmel that he wouldn’t be surprised if aliens existed.

Clinton also said that he had looked into Area 51 and details of what it harboured, and concluded that there were no aliens on the airbase.

Researchers have a new warning. Tread carefully, this one will blow your mind. Banking too much on artificial intelligence as the future of all sentient life? Researchers believe AI could fool us into believing alien life exists.

According to the study conducted at University of Cadiz and published in the journal Acta Astronautica, specifically took into account a particular formation on the planet Ceres, and found that AI could mistake shapes as proof extraterrestrial life. If that wasn’t enough, AI could also deceive humans into falling for its mistake.

Currently, AI is being employed across all industries to generate more accurate results without scope of error. But in the hunt for ET, AI is generally used to spot “technosignatures”, that are indicative of alien life.

Accidental formations could be mistaken as evidence of alien life. Ceres currently sits at the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter, and had been under the watchful eye of scientists after they spotted bright lights on its surface.

They were disappointed to discover what was causing the bright lights. According to NASA’s Dawn mission, the lights turned out to be a product of volcanic ice and salt emissions.

A crater on the surface of Ceres named Occator, resembled a triangular structure, which led many scientists to speculate that was built by aliens. But it was a misunderstanding.

In the study, respondents were shown the crater. They were then asked what they made of it, and many of them pointed out its unusual formation.

When they ran the same set of images through an AI system, it also spotted unusual formations, same as the participants. However, while both AI and the respondents found a square image, the AI also registered a triangular image.

When human respondents were told about the triangle, they started believing that it was there too, effectively manipulating the information.

While the researchers behind the study warned humans of trusting AI too much when it comes to discovering alien life, they added that AI could also detect structures that humans never could.

A new study has identified more than 1,000 nearby stars that are favourably positioned for spotting life on Earth. The team has identified 1,004 stars with Earth in their line of sight, which could contain habitable, Earth-like planets.

"If observers were out there searching [from planets orbiting these stars], they would be able to see signs of a biosphere in the atmosphere of our Pale Blue Dot,” study lead author Lisa Kaltenegger, an associate professor of astronomy at Cornell and director of the university's Carl Sagan Institute, said in a statement.

"And we can even see some of the brightest of these stars in our night sky without binoculars or telescopes," Kaltenegger said.

These stars are all within 326 light-years of Earth. "The closest star in our list is at a distance of only 8.5 pc - about 28 light-years - from our Sun," the researchers said.

Due to several unexplained events, it has become very hard for the curious human brain to believe that we are the only living creatures in this wide, wide universe.

Most of us have tried to channel our inner Christopher Nolan to explain why aliens are very much legit, then there are some who are convinced that America is hiding aliens in Area 51.

There are around 100 billion to 300 billion stars in the Milky Way alone. The Australian astronomers studied just 10 million stars, the odds are still in favour of those looking for aliens.

Scientists said on Monday they have detected in the harshly acidic clouds of Venus a gas called phosphine that indicates microbes may inhabit Earth's inhospitable neighbour, a tantalizing sign of potential life beyond Earth.

The researchers did not discover actual life forms, but noted that on Earth phosphine is produced by bacteria thriving in oxygen-starved environments. The international scientific team first spotted the phosphine using the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope in Hawaii and confirmed it using the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) radio telescope in Chile.

"I was very surprised - stunned, in fact," said astronomer Jane Greaves of Cardiff University in Wales, lead author of the research published in the journal Nature Astronomy.

The existence of extraterrestrial life long has been one of the paramount questions of science. Scientists have used probes and telescopes to seek "biosignatures" - indirect signs of life - on other planets and moons in our solar system and beyond.

"With what we currently know of Venus, the most plausible explanation for phosphine, as fantastical as it might sound, is life," said Massachusetts Institute of Technology molecular astrophysicist and study co-author Clara Sousa-Silva.

"I should emphasize that life, as an explanation for our discovery, should be, as always, the last resort," Sousa-Silva added. "This is important because, if it is phosphine, and if it is life, it means that we are not alone. It also means that life itself must be very common, and there must be many other inhabited planets throughout our galaxy."

Phosphine - a phosphorus atom with three hydrogen atoms attached - is highly toxic to people.

Earth-based telescopes like those used in this research help scientists study the chemistry and other characteristics of celestial objects.

Phosphine was seen at 20 parts-per-billion in the Venusian atmosphere, a trace concentration. Greaves said the researchers examined potential non-biological sources such as volcanism, meteorites, lightning and various types of chemical reactions, but none appeared viable. The research continues to either confirm the presence of life or find an alternative explanation.

Venus is Earth's closest planetary neighbour. Similar in structure but slightly smaller than Earth, it is the second planet from the sun. Earth is the third. Venus is wrapped in a thick, toxic atmosphere that traps in heat. Surface temperatures reach a scorching 880 degrees Fahrenheit (471 degrees Celsius), hot enough to melt lead.

"I can only speculate on what life might survive on Venus, if indeed it is there. No life would be able to survive on the surface of Venus, because it is completely inhospitable, even for biochemistries completely different from ours," Sousa-Silva said. "But a long time ago, Venus could have had life on its surface, before a runaway greenhouse effect left the majority of the planet completely uninhabitable."

THE ACID TEST

Some scientists have suspected that the Venusian high clouds, with mild temperatures around 86 degrees Fahrenheit (30 degrees Celsius), could harbor aerial microbes that could endure extreme acidity. These clouds are around 90% sulphuric acid. Earth microbes could not survive that acidity.

"If it's microorganisms, they would have access to some sunlight and water, and maybe live in liquid droplets to stop themselves dehydrating, but they would need some unknown mechanism to protect against corrosion by acid," Greaves said.

On Earth, microorganisms in "anaerobic" environments - ecosystems that do not rely on oxygen - produce phosphine. These include sewage plants, swamps, rice fields, marshlands, lake sediments and the excrements and intestinal tracts of many animals. Phosphine also arises non-biologically in certain industrial settings.

To produce phosphine, Earth bacteria take up phosphate from minerals or biological material and add hydrogen.

"We have done our very best to explain this discovery without the need for a biological process. With our current knowledge of phosphine, and Venus, and geochemistry, we cannot explain the presence of phosphine in the clouds of Venus. That doesn't mean it is life. It just means that some exotic process is producing phosphine, and our understanding of Venus needs work," Clara Sousa-Silva said.

Venus should be hostile to phosphine. Its surface and atmosphere are rich in oxygen compounds that would rapidly react with and destroy phosphine.

"Something must be creating the phosphine on Venus as fast as it is being destroyed," said study co-author Anita Richards, an astrophysicist associated with the University of Manchester in England.

While previous robotic spacecraft have visited Venus, a new probe may be needed to confirm life.

"Fortunately, Venus is right next door," Sousa-Silva said. "So we can literally go and check."

While the world deals with a pandemic, China is going extraterrestrial - quite literally.

Chinese state media outlet Science and Technology Daily claims that the country’s FAST (Five-hundred-metre Aperture Spherical Telescope) is going to start looking for alien life, rather signals starting September 2020.

The huge telescope started functioning in January, but has been undergoing renovation and upgrades to minimise the risk of signal interference which could hamper the scientific undertaking of finding aliens.

With a diameter of 500 metres, FAST marks one of the pilot state-sanctioned projects ever to focus extensively on research on the extraterrestrial.

EnGadget reported that the planned research will not disrupt ongoing missions, as asserted by Chief Scientist Zhang Tongjie.

However, Tongjie warned that they expect no signals from intelligent life, adding there exist “interesting narrowband candidate ET signals”.

Radio signals are emitted from pulsars or fast radio bursts. In case any alien life is trying to reach out to Earth, FAST will improve the chances of receiving the signals and processing those signals.
