<p>Unlike other films, <em>PadMan </em>picks up the pace in the second half where, after relentless persuasion, Lakshmi finally cracks the code of making perfect, low-cost sanitary napkins. A chance encounter with Pari(Sonam Kapoor), an idealist, activist whose father is an IIT professor, helps him take his innovation to Delhi and even win awards. The scenes where Pari and Lakshmi together convince other women of the village to not only use his low-cost pads but also mobilize them to create such pads on their own in smaller factories are truly inspiring. Some of the film&rsquo;s brightest moments lie in the way Pari, an MBA graduate, and Lakshmi, mobilizes women folk to become self-reliant.</p>

<p>The film is tailor made for Akshay Kumar and he shines throughout. He may appear too urban in the beginning of the film, but his simpleton act is ultimately convincing and endearing. A scene has Kumar delivering a long monologue in broken English and for an actor who is well versed with the language in real life, Kumar manages to pull off the scene with utmost conviction, with not a single false not. Also, the scene where Kumar explains to a bunch of dignitaries how his innovation works with hand movements, its pure joy to watch. Kumar, over the past decade, has balanced formula films and author-backed roles with great aplomb and PadMan will remain one of his career&rsquo;s high point. His Lakshmi is tad irritating, mad, simple and above all a visionary. And Kumar serves as the perfect poster boy for Make In India campaign with this role.</p>

<p>Sonam Kapoor, a young bright do-gooder who helps Lakshmi learn how &lsquo;to fly&rsquo; is also perfect in her role. Kapoor, who has evolved as an actress over the past years, plays a catalyst of sorts and delivers a convincing performance. Perhaps the most conventional character in the film that of Radhika Apte&#39;s who as the conservative housewife grappling with a very liberal husband delivers a commendable performance. Known for her acting prowess, Radhika&rsquo;s role is perhaps the toughest and anyone could have easily hammed. But Radhika&rsquo;s restraint performance makes her Gayatri look innocent, vulnerable and emotional. Even though you know that she ticks all stereotypes and plays to the gallery &ndash; you may still empathise with her as she stares helplessly at her husband&#39;s maverick ideas.</p>

The detailing is a bit too much to take. But maybe it is meant for an audience which needs to be spoon-fed about the benefits of menstrual hygiene and which is why R Balki keeps the narrative simple and linear. The only glitch in the entire story is an unnecessary romantic track that is introduced in the second half which sort of deviates the story for a few minutes.</p>

<p>Amit Trivedi&rsquo;s music blends in the narrative perfectly but none of the songs really stand out. They are treated literally as a tool to over-explain the story.</p>

For women, it is a story that all too familiar- some of the privileged lot may not identify with the film but surely they can sympathise with those who cannot afford expensive sanitary pads or those who go through various archaic rituals every month because of periods. More importantly,<em> PadMan</em> serves to a greater audience and enables a discussion which &ndash; if not anything else- is a good start towards spreading more awareness. Never mind how the story unfolds on screen, it ultimately serves its purpose and is&nbsp;for a greater good.</p>

<p>It&#39;s not often we get to see a Bollywood film dealing with an important social issue, trying to break a stereotype established in the society for centuries and most importantly an A-lister actor taking on this challenge to portray a risky character who may or may not be able to make into the hearts of the masses.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Releasing tomorrow on February 9, <em>PadMan</em> starring Akshay Kumar in the lead along with Sonam Kapoor and Radhika Apte will take on this challenge. The story is inspired by real-life story of&nbsp;Arunachalam Muruganantham,&nbsp;a&nbsp;social entrepreneur&nbsp;from&nbsp;Coimbatore&nbsp;in&nbsp;Tamil Nadu,&nbsp;India. Inventor of the low-cost sanitary pad-making machine and credited for innovating grassroots mechanisms for creating awareness about traditional and unhygienic practices around menstruation in rural India, the film traces Arunachalam&#39;s hurdles and rise to fame in real-life.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Arunachalam dropped out of school at&nbsp;14 years of age and&nbsp;worked as a farm labourer, workshop welder to earn his daily wage for several years before being hit by the realisation that Indian rural women have no access or awareness about their own personal hygiene. He understood the challenges faced by women on a monthly basis after being in close quarters with his wife and watching her use unhygienic products to stop bleeding during her menstruation cycle.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In an exclusive interview with WION, the real &#39;PadMan&#39;&nbsp;opens up about his ongoing struggle for women&#39;s personal hygiene awareness and his hopes from the Bollywood movie of the same name:</p>

	<li>How important is it for Bollywood to take up the issue of menstrual hygiene -- still a social taboo in India?&nbsp;</li>

<p><em>For 18 years we have been working towards menstrual hygiene awareness in the country but nobody talks about women&#39;s menstruation. In fact, it would be the first time that an interview is based on this issue.&nbsp;Nobody has spoken about it for centuries-- mother never talks to daughter or&nbsp;vice versa. Now that a Bollywood movie is being made on the topic, the film with its visual space will at least empower women to talk about it, to open up. Via Akshay Kumar, via this movie, women will be empowered to start a dialogue. I am hopeful that since its a Bollywood movie, the topic it deals with will reach nook and corner of India and the world, something we always aspired to be able to do.&nbsp;</em></p>

	<li>The focus of the film and your campaign is mostly on rural population, however, the urban populace is also affected by social taboos like not visiting the temple while menstruating. Most feel it&#39;s a part of Hindu tradition. Some think there are scientific reasons behind it.&nbsp;</li>

<p><em>These are century-old traditions, it will slowly go away via debates.&nbsp;Instead of looking for an opportunity from the society, I tried finding a solution to the problem with the little knowledge I had and became a solution-provider. In India, we need to become that and then we can become a superpower.&nbsp;</em></p>

	<li>In 1998, when you approached&nbsp;Shanti, your wife to use sanitary napkins, she said we have to compensate on&nbsp;house budget to afford, what can the government do to make sanitary pads available and affordable?&nbsp;</li>

<p><em>The government needs to start by making a propaganda&nbsp;for menstrual hygiene&nbsp;awareness, to educate the women and then give them&nbsp;pads. I want them (government) to join us for this initiative. Currently, they just give pads without making them aware, it is useless.&nbsp;If you drop coke inside the jungle, what will the tribals do with </em><em>it?</em></p>

On the flip side, it made me free, made me feel like a &#39;pardesi&#39;&nbsp;but that made my job easier. I </em><em>took it positively and conducted research without any disturbance.&nbsp;</em></p>

<p><em>There was once when I got a chance to buy a sanitary&nbsp;pad for my wife when I saw her using a rag cloth -- I rode my cycle for 14 km&nbsp;and reached this shop. I asked the shopkeeper for a pad and he asked which brand, I had no idea what he meant and just asked him to give me any. He, then, took a packet, wrapped it in a brown packet, checked if no one was watching him and then handed me the packet readily. It looked like he was smuggling the packet to me. And this was not just limited to that place but even in Delhi where shopkeepers shy from handing the packet normally to you. There is so much stigma around that packet.&nbsp;</em></p>

They can even end up saving double.&nbsp;&nbsp;</em></p>

Arunachalam is a South India-based social entrepreneur who invented a low-cost sanitary pad making machine and runs a campaign for importance women's personal hygiene awareness

It's not often we get to see a Bollywood film dealing with an important social issue, trying to break a stereotype established in the society for centuries and most importantly an A-lister actor taking on this challenge to portray a risky character who may or may not be able to make into the hearts of the masses. Releasing tomorrow on February 9, PadMan starring Akshay Kumar in the lead along with Sonam Kapoor and Radhika Apte will take on this challenge. The story is inspired by real-life story of Arunachalam Muruganantham, a social entrepreneur from Coimbatore in Tamil Nadu, India. Inventor of the low-cost sanitary pad-making machine and credited for innovating grassroots mechanisms for creating awareness about traditional and unhygienic practices around menstruation in rural India, the film traces Arunachalam's hurdles and rise to fame in real-life. Arunachalam dropped out of school at 14 years of age and worked as a farm labourer, workshop welder to earn his daily wage for several years before being hit by the realisation that Indian rural women have no access or awareness about their own personal hygiene. He understood the challenges faced by women on a monthly basis after being in close quarters with his wife and watching her use unhygienic products to stop bleeding during her menstruation cycle. In an exclusive interview with WION, the real 'PadMan' opens up about his ongoing struggle for women's personal hygiene awareness and his hopes from the Bollywood movie of the same name: How important is it for Bollywood to take up the issue of menstrual hygiene -- still a social taboo in India? For 18 years we have been working towards menstrual hygiene awareness in the country but nobody talks about women's menstruation. In fact, it would be the first time that an interview is based on this issue. Nobody has spoken about it for centuries-- mother never talks to daughter or vice versa. Now that a Bollywood movie is being made on the topic, the film with its visual space will at least empower women to talk about it, to open up. Via Akshay Kumar, via this movie, women will be empowered to start a dialogue. I am hopeful that since its a Bollywood movie, the topic it deals with will reach nook and corner of India and the world, something we always aspired to be able to do. The focus of the film and your campaign is mostly on rural population, however, the urban populace is also affected by social taboos like not visiting the temple while menstruating. Most feel it's a part of Hindu tradition. Some think there are scientific reasons behind it. These are century-old traditions, it will slowly go away via debates. Instead of looking for an opportunity from the society, I tried finding a solution to the problem with the little knowledge I had and became a solution-provider. In India, we need to become that and then we can become a superpower. In 1998, when you approached Shanti, your wife to use sanitary napkins, she said we have to compensate on house budget to afford, what can the government do to make sanitary pads available and affordable? The government needs to start by making a propaganda for menstrual hygiene awareness, to educate the women and then give them pads. I want them (government) to join us for this initiative. Currently, they just give pads without making them aware, it is useless. If you drop coke inside the jungle, what will the tribals do with it? I asked them what they are doing with my pads, and they said, &ldquo;shut up silly girl, we&rsquo;re taking part in a movement that will change the course of history. We&rsquo;re going to make periods a taboo a thing of the past! The Padman Challenge will empower women! Don&rsquo;t forget to use the hashtag otherwise you&rsquo;re not empowering anybody!!!&rdquo; I felt so empowered and inspired and I wanted to do the challenge too, but at this time everyone had thrown away the opened pads and I continued to bleed through my clothing. Sure, there is more awareness now and it is heartening to see both men and women engage in dialogue about menstruation, but the campaign doesn&#39;t serve a greater purpose. While we pose with pads for Instagram and Facebook posts, millions of girls are still using rags during menstruation which is dangerous and unhygienic.<br />

Many have also criticised Bollywood celebrities for not speaking out or campaigning for the removal of 12% tax that is levied on sanitary napkins. Or the fact that this whole excercise is wasting some very expensive pads.</p>

PadMan challenge: What is it good for? Absolutely nothing, say some

<p>Akshay Kumar&#39;s film Padman is making all the right noises even before its release. A film that aims to break the taboo around menstruation, Padman is helmed by R Balki and has been written by Twinkle Khanna who has also turned producer for the film.&nbsp;<br />

While the film is being hailed for starting a conversation around menstruation in public, it has also achieved another feat recently. Slated to release in India on 9th February, PadMan will also be releasing in Russia, Ivory Coast and Iraq on the same day.&nbsp;<br />

PadMan becomes Bollywood's first film to release day and date in Russia, Ivory Coast and Iraq

<p>Actor Akshay Kumar on Monday said that he wanted to work in socially conscious films for a long time but now has the financial support to take up such projects.<br />

The actor along with wife Twinkle Khanna, director R Balki, Radhika Apte and Arunachalam Muruganantham, whose life and initiative of making affordable sanitary inspired the film <em>Padman</em>, was in the city to promote the film.<br />

Twinkle said she came across Muruganantham&#39;s story while researching about menstruation online and found it to be an &quot;incredible story&quot; to tell.<br />

There were two parts to this story. One part was menstruation where a man was doing something for his wife,&quot; said Twinkle.<br />

Rajinikanth-Akshay Kumar's '2.0' postponed again, won't release in April

<p>The date is finally confirmed. Sanjay Leela Bhansali&#39;s film <em>Padmavat</em><em> </em>is all set to release in the theatre on January 25th, 2018. The controversial film got its censor certificate earlier last week and now the makers have planned to release the film in January and cash in on the extended weekend.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Interestingly, the Bhansali&#39;s film will clash with two other major Bollywood releases that weekend- Akshay Kumar&#39;s Padman and Manoj Bajpayee&#39;s Aiyaary. As many as 5 states have banned the film including Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Gujarat. Fringe outfit Rajput Karni Sena and political leaders had appealed to Censor Board to screen the film first to a select audience and remove objectionable scenes around it.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Only last week, CBFC invited a panel which included historians and former Royals to view the film and makers were asked to rename the film as<em> </em><em>Padmavat</em><em>.</em> In December, Bhansali had met a special Parliamentary&nbsp;committee and stated that the film was based on Jayasi&#39;s poem <em>Padmavat.&nbsp;</em>The film features Deepika Padukone, Ranveer&nbsp;Singh and Shahid Kapoor in lead roles.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The makers of the film- Viacom 18 and Bhansali Productions- have not made any official announcement yet.&nbsp;</p>

The film also features Radhika Apte and Sonam Kapoor and has been produced by Twinkle Khanna. Padman will be releasing on 26th January.</p>

The film traces her journey as a teacher and how she overcomes the problem as well as wins over a difficult set of pupils. Directed by Sidharth P Malhotra, the film should serve as a treat for Rani Mukerji fans as she gets to showcase her acting prowess in a difficult, challenging character. The film releases on 23 February.</p>

Co-starring Diana Penty, the film is about based on the nuclear bomb test explosions conducted by the Indian Army at Pokhran in 1998. The first three months are packed with some very interesting films

2017 saw the success of many middle-of-the-road films. From Hindi Medium to Newton, filmmakers gave audience stories that were thought provoking. The big budget masala potboilers were rejected by the audience as people lauded smaller films. The new year will see Bollywood churning out some highly anticipated films along with small budget films. The first three months are packed with some very interesting films. From Rani Mukerji's comeback in Hichki to Akshay Kumar turning a do-gooder in Padman - there is much to look forward to from Bollywood. Apart from the big names, there are also films like Mukkabaaz, Pari, Parmanu which will try to strike a chord with the audience. And of course, the beginning of 2018 will finally witness the release of Sanjay Leela Bhansali's grand Padmavat. So, here's our list of 11 films to look forward to in the first quarter of 2018 Kaalakaandi: There is something about Saif Ali Khan that always appeals. The Nawab hasn't delivered a hit for a long time but continues to generate curiosity thanks to his unique choices in films. After playing the main protagonist in last year's Chef, Khan will be seen in a dark comedy called Kaalakaandi which has an ensemble cast. Directed by Akshat Verma, the film will release on January 12th. Mukkabaaz: Anurag Kashyap casts the underrated Vineet Singh in the titular role in his new film Mukkabaaz. Set in Uttar Pradesh, the story is of a lower caste boxer who dares to fall in love with an upper caste girl. Co-starring Jimmy Shergill and Ravi Kishan, the film will have Kashyap's signature style of drama and violence with a powerful storyline. Set to release on January 12th. Padman: Akshay Kumar turns a superhero of sorts as he becomes a crusader for women in R Balki's Padman. Based on a real-life incident, Akshay Kumar will be seen playing a do-gooder who propagates the importance of menstrual hygiene and creates low-cost sanitary napkins in the film. The film also features Radhika Apte and Sonam Kapoor and has been produced by Twinkle Khanna. Padman will be releasing on 26th January. Padman, Mukkabaaz, Hichki: 11 films to look forward to in the first quarter of 2018

<p>Ever since the news of their intimate wedding in Italy came out, fans of Virat Kohli and Anushka Sharma have been obsessing over every minute details of their favourite couple and sharing it on social media. After hosting two gala receptions in Delhi and Mumbai, the newlyweds are now in South Africa spending some quality time before Virat along with the Indian cricket team begins the series against South Africa. Anushka too will head home where she will resume work on the sets of <em>Zero</em>. &nbsp;</p>

<p>Virushka though spent an afternoon recently in Cape Town meeting Akshay Kumar. The superstar has been in South Africa since Christmas along with his family and even celebrated wife Twinkle Khanna&#39;s birthday there.</p>

Holidaying in South Africa, Akshay Kumar understands what happiness is

<p>Twinkle Khanna, one of the producers of &nbsp;Padman, said her actor-husband Akshay Kumar was not the first choice to play Arunachalam Muruganantham in the film.</p>

<p>Directed by R Balki, <em>Padman</em>&nbsp;revolves around Muruganantham, a social activist from Tamil Nadu, who revolutionised the concept of menstrual hygiene in rural India by creating a low-cost sanitary napkin machine.&nbsp;When asked if Akshay was her first choice, Twinkle, said, &quot;No. R Balki convinced me that Akshay should do this part.&quot;</p>

<p>When prodded further as to who she thought could have played the role when the film was being conceptualised, Twinkle quipped, &quot;Are you trying to create trouble in my marriage now?&quot;</p>
