In 1747, Ahmad Shah Durrani captured Kandahar, Kabul and Ghazni. The former bodyguard of assassinated Persian ruler Nadir Shah conquered Kabul, Ghazni, Peshawar and much of modern Pakistan to lay the foundation of the Afghanistan we know today.

Durrani lost control of Punjab and Kashmir to Sikh rulers in 1819.

The death of Ayub Shah in 1823 is considered to be the end of the Durrani rule in Afghanistan

The British Indian Army invaded and conquered Kabul in 1838.

It was only in 1919 that Afghans declared independence with Emir Amanullah Khan at the helm.

In 1933, Zahir Shah became the king but the monarchy lasted only 40 years until Mohammad Daud seized power in 1973. Daud was killed 5 years later.

In 1979, Soviets invaded and installed a communist government in the country, and that is when the modern history of Afghanistan began.

In 1980, as a response to Soviets, the Americans, Saudis, Iranians, Chinese, and Pakistanis provided support to the Mujahideen fighters

Some of these radical Islamic fighters eventually banded together between 1980-1989 to give rise to the Taliban.

Other ethnic groups formed the northern alliance and fought the Taliban for control of the country.

The Soviets withdrew a decade later in 1989, and the Soviet appointed Najibullah government fell soon after.

1996 saw the Taliban capture Kabul and introduce a strict Islamic rule. As part of this, women were barred from work, and punishments like public executions, amputations, and stoning to death were introduced.

Despite the atrocities committed by them, Pakistan & Saudi Arabia recognised Taliban as the legitimate government of Afghanistan in 1997.

On September 9, 2001, Ahmad Shah Masood, the leader of the opposition northern alliance was assassinated.

Two days later, terror attacks at the World Trade Center in New York reshaped the destiny of Afghanistan. The terror attack prompted the US led “war on terror” which marked the start of the end of the Taliban rule in Afghanistan. However, the bloodshed between the US assisted Afghan forces and the Taliban continues to this day.

Hamid Karzai and later Ashraf Ghani have tried to run coalition governments to provide stability in the country between 2001-14. Ghani was sworn in as the president of Afghanistan in 2014.

However, the Taliban violently opposes any government in Kabul amid US troop withdrawal. A peace deal with the terror group has failed to find a permanent solution as the Taliban continues violent opposition towards the government.

Afghanistan started releasing Taliban prisoners on Friday the final hurdle in long-delayed peace talks between the two warring sides, even as President Ashraf Ghani warned they were a "danger to the world".

The "loya jirga" — the traditional gathering of tribal elders and other prominent citizens called by Ghani — approved the release to pave the way for talks and a possible ceasefire.
The list of prisoners being released consists of few of very "high-profile" criminals who are guilty of some of the biggest tragedies of the world.

Considering such cases, France has objected to and protested against the release of three men who were jailed for the murders of French nationals in Afghanistan.

The group of prisoners being released include two men who murdered a French national Bettina Goislard, an employee of the UN refugee agency, in the eastern city of Ghazni on November 16, 2003, and a former Afghan soldier who killed five French troops and injured 13 others in 2012 in Kapisa province.

France's Foreign Ministry issued a statement that said France is "firmly opposed to the liberation of individuals sentenced for crimes against French nationals, especially soldiers and humanitarian workers who served with dedication at the side of our Afghan partners for the security and assistance of people in need."

"We have consequently asked Afghan authorities not to proceed with the liberation of these terrorists," the statement continued.

Bettina Goislard's family also opposed the move.

The Taliban and Afghan government will be meeting days few days after the prisoner release is completed. The Afghan government faced huge criticism for the decision of releasing Talibani prisoners involved in attacks that killed scores of Afghans and foreigners.

Long-awaited peace negotiations between the Afghan government and the Taliban were expected to start in Qatar within a week once the final batch of Taliban prisoners were released, the U.S. special envoy and Afghan government sources said on Monday.

U.S. Special Envoy Zalmay Khalilzad, who reached an agreement with the Taliban in February for the withdrawal of the last U.S. troops, welcomed the progress, having spent months trying to bring the militant movement to the negotiating table with the government.

The Taliban had demanded the release of last 400 of 5,000 prisoners to be freed, as a condition for joining peace talk. But the government had been hesitant as these prisoners were involved in some of the worst violence, including a 2017 truck bombing near the German embassy in Kabul that killed more than 150 people - the deadliest attack in the 19-year insurgency.

The grand assembly was attended by almost 3,200 people with the aim to start a conversation on peace talks between Afghanistan and the Taliban.

This new resolution was passed after the Taliban insisted that the "hard-core" prisoners should be released before entering peace talks with the government.

Afghanistan's grand assembly to release 400 Taliban prisoners

The family of a French woman murdered in Afghanistan said Saturday they could not accept the release of her killers as Kabul and the Taliban discuss freeing 400 prisoners as part of a peace deal.

"Such a decision to free (them) made on the basis of horse-trading would be, to us, her family, inconceivable," Bettina's parents, brother and sister said in a statement to AFP.

"It would be a denial of the judicial process which saw her killers, arrested in the act and whose guilt has never been in doubt, convicted in an Afghan court," the statement said.

On Friday, Afghan President Ashraf Ghani urged thousands of prominent citizens gathered in a Loya Jirga assembly to decide whether to release about 400 Taliban prisoners, including many involved in attacks that killed scores of Afghans and foreigners.

The prisoners' fate is a crucial hurdle in launching peace talks between the two warring sides, which have committed to completing a prisoner exchange beforehand.

The Afghan government has already released almost 5,000 Taliban inmates but has baulked at freeing the final prisoners demanded by the Taliban.

As well as Bettina's two killers, there are some 150 others who have been sentenced to death for serious crimes, according to the list seen by AFP.

Five of the men, for example, played a role in the 2018 attack on the Intercontinental hotel in Kabul which left 40 people dead, including 14 foreigners.

The family said they could never accept a decision to release the prisoners "which would not show respect to their victims or their relatives and we hope the Loya Jirga will carefully consider the case of those who have carried out such crimes and not release them."

The Loya Jirga is expected to announce a decision on Sunday. Its findings are not legally binding but carry significant political weight.

Family of French woman killed in Afghanistan oppose prisoner release

Thousands of Afghan elders, community leaders and politicians gathered on Friday to debate government efforts to make peace with the Taliban, in particular the fate of 400 hard-core Taliban prisoners whose release could clear the way for talks.

The release of these Taliban terrorists, some of whom are also facing the death penalty, didn't go down well with Roshan Belqis, an independent lawmaker, who criticised Loya Jirga and Ghani for deliberations.

As Ghani began speaking, she stood up and displayed a banner that read: "Redeeming Taliban is national treason."

Belqis was asked to leave and then as she began running with the banner, she was chased down by a pro-Talibani leader Nasimah Niazi, who brutally pushed her towards the floor.

The Afghan government has already released about 5,000 Talibani prisoners but is struggling to make a call on remaining 400 prisoners, some of which are accused of gruesome crimes.

As per an earlier agreement signed between the terror group and the US, the release of Talibani inmates is a pre-condition for intra-Afghan talks.

Ghani, during his address, suggested that the prisoners should be released, if talks need to go ahead.

"If they are not freed, not only would they continue the war but they would intensify it. But it was not possible to release them without consulting the nation," the Afghan president said.

However, he said he would endorse any decision taken by the assembly.

Afghan foreign minister says Pakistani terror groups have symbiotic relations with Al Qaeda, IS

Thousands of Afghan elders, community leaders and politicians gathered on Friday to debate government efforts to make peace with the Taliban, in particular the fate of 400 hard-core Taliban prisoners whose release could clear the way for talks.

Some 3,200 people have been invited to the grand assembly, known as a Loya Jirga, in Kabul amid tight security to debate for at least three days and then advise the government on whether the prisoners should be freed.

As part of a February pact between the United States and the Taliban allowing for the withdrawal of U.S. troops, it was agreed that some 5,000 Taliban prisoners should be released from Afghan jails as a condition for talks between the militants and the U.S.-backed government.

The government has released all but some 400 militants it says have been convicted of the worst crimes including killings, drug trafficking and kidnapping.

While many Afghans see the peace effort as the best hope for ending the 19-year war with the Taliban, some are concerned about the militants` commitment to reconciliation, especially after the United States completes its troop withdrawal.

U.S. special envoy for Afghanistan Zalmay Khalilzad, the architect of the deal allowing the United States to withdraw its forces and end its longest-ever war, warned against the Loya Jirga throwing up any complications.

"We wish the jirga participants success ... and urge them not to allow those who prefer the status quo and seek to complicate the path to peace to manipulate the process," Khalilzad said on Twitter. He did not elaborate.
Afghanistan’s constitution recognises the Loya Jirga as "the highest manifestation of the will of the people of Afghanistan".

The head of its secretariat, Abdul Salam Rahimi, said its decision was necessary as President Ashraf Ghani was not empowered to release prisoners convicted of such serious crimes.

He said precautions would be taken to prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus.

An attack claimed by Islamic State on a jail compound in the Afghan city of Jalalabad killed at least 24 people and injured dozens -- including civilians and prisoners, triggering heavy fighting in which scores of prisoners escaped.

Three militants were killed during the initial attack and gunbattle overnight, while at least 21 civilians and members of security forces died in the fighting, and 43 were wounded, Attaullah Khugyani, a spokesman for the governor said.

During the ensuing chaos more than 75 prisoners escaped, forcing police to divert manpower to try to recapture them, according to the officials.

Fighting was still raging a day after gunmen stormed the prison in the eastern city of Jalalabad.

Sohrab Qaderi, a provincial council member, said a huge car bomb explosion was followed by at least two smaller blasts outside the government-run prison, and that police then fought attackers who had taken up positions nearby.

Islamic State's Amaq news agency quoted a military source as saying its fighters had carried out Sunday's attack but gave no further details. There was no independent confirmation that the militant group was responsible.

The assault happened on the third and final day of a ceasefire between the Afghan government and the Taliban, when hundreds of Taliban prisoners were released in an attempt to make a final push for intra-Afghan peace talks.
The Taliban was not responsible for the attack, a spokesman for the Islamist group said.

IS claimed responsibility for the attack, which came a day after the Afghan intelligence agency said special forces had killed a senior commander of the group near Jalalabad, the provincial capital of Nangarhar.

President Ashraf Ghani and the Taliban have both indicated that long-delayed negotiations could begin immediately after the Eid al-Adha festival, which took place in Kabul on Thursday.

The Taliban says it has freed all 1,000 Afghan prisoners it had pledged to release in a deal with the United States.

Islamic State militants were battling Afghan security forces in the eastern city of Jalalabad till Monday morning.

Some 130 kilometres (80 miles) east of Kabul, Jalalabad lies on the highway leading to the Khyber Pass and the Pakistani city of Peshawar.

A United Nations report last month estimated there are around 2,200 IS members in Afghanistan, and that while the group is in territorial retreat and its leadership has been depleted, it remains capable of carrying out high-profile attacks.

Officials said that in recent years at least 15 civilians have been killed in some clashes along the border between Pakistan and Afghanistan.

Officials say, "15 Afghan civilians die after border clashes with Pakistan"

Afghanistan accused Pakistan on Friday of killing 15 civilians during clashes at a border crossing where crowds were jostling to cross for the Muslim festival of Eid al-Adha.

On Pakistan`s side, hospital officials reported seven deaths from the flare-up between the Asian neighbours who are U.S. allies but often trade accusations of backing militants.

The governor of Afghanistan`s southeastern Kandahar province, Hayatullah Hayat, said shells fell on homes in the border town Spin Boldak, with women and children among 15 dead and 80 hurt, during the clashes between both nations` security forces.

In Pakistan, medics said seven people had died and 31 were brought in with bullet wounds.

The violence flared when crowds waiting to cross into Afghanistan became unruly and attacked Pakistani installations, said a senior official in the Pakistani border town Chaman.

"If the Pakistani military continues its rocket attacks on Afghan territory, they will face retaliation by the Afghan army," Afghanistan`s defence ministry said in a statement.

SELF-DEFENCE

Pakistan`s foreign ministry said Afghan forces had opened fire on the crowd. "Pakistan troops responded to protect our local population and acted only in self-defence," it said, adding that Pakistan immediately activated military and diplomatic channels to deescalate the situation.

However, protesters told Reuters by phone that the Pakistani security forces had opened fire on the crowd first.

The crossing, mostly shut during the COVID-19 pandemic, was briefly opened on Wednesday and had been due to reopen on Thursday to allow nationals of both countries to cross for Eid, which falls on Friday in Afghanistan and Saturday in Pakistan.

When it did not open, a large crowd gathered to protest, and a quarantine centre and Pakistani government facility for processing crossings were burned down, the Chaman official said.

People on both sides, with close family and tribal ties, have for decades moved freely across the border. But security and monitoring have tightened recently as both nations have accused each other of providing safe havens for extremists.
