WI vs AUS 2025: Is Konstas back in reckoning after WTC Final debacle? McDonald answers

Australia head coach Andrew McDonald is not ready to drop guards for under-fire opener and batting great Usman Khawaja despite his twin failures in the just-concluded WTC Final at the Lord’s. With Australia failing to defend their Test title against the Proteas, who claimed their maiden crown with a five-wicket win, the questions began to rise on Khawaja’s future, considering his dip in form and age; McDonald, however, has backed him to retain his spot for the home Ashes later this year.&nbsp;With Australia set to host England for five Tests, and given their ageing squad at the helm, the head coach stressed the need to work on acquiring new talent in the batting order but clarified his stance on Khawaja’s role at the top. Though Marnus Labuschagne also received his backing, with McDonald calling him a ‘significant part of the team’s future’, his words for Khawaja were equally motivating, saying what he brings to the table at his best is irreplaceable. &nbsp;While the Bumrah-led Indian pace attack troubled Khawaja throughout the last home summer, the Aussie opener bounced back with his career-best 232 against Sri Lanka in the away series next, proving he still has plenty to offer. However, collecting just six runs across two innings against South Africa again brought his place in jeopardy, but McDonald seems unbothered by that. &nbsp;"He's on contract, he's an important player," McDonald said of Khawaja. "He gives us stability at his best at the top. And we like to look at our players at their best. &nbsp;"No doubt, a couple of failures here and people then start to talk about maybe it's the end. I don't see an end date with the way he's training, the way he's preparing, the way he's moving. He went back to Shield cricket and got 100 last [season]. So I think he's got plenty of runs left in him. It'll come down to his inner drive and the way he prepares. &nbsp;"It was a bit the same with Davey as well. The way he moved, we saw some positives in that. We knew that the runs were around the corner. We feel as though Usman's got a big part to play,” he continued.<h2>Who, alongside Khawaja? &nbsp;</h2>Australia tried several options in their past three series. While they started with rookie players like Nathan McSweeney and Sam Konstas, with both vacating that spot sooner, Australia tried Travis Head in Sri Lanka before handing a new role to number three Labuschagne for the WTC Final. Australia head coach vows to protect Usman Khawaja's Test career despite batting slump in WTC Final

Australia’s head coach Andrew McDonald has backed Marnus Labuschagne to get into the Ashes squad despite a poor World Test Championship (WTC) final performance. Labuschagne scored 39 runs in two innings during the WTC final where South Africa beat Australia by five wickets. After the defeat, McDonald was questioned on Labuschagne’s future in the side with a huge Australian summer awaiting as England will come for the Ashes.<h2>McDonald backs Labuschagne</h2>“He’s a big part of the future of the team,” McDonald said of Labuschagne. “Anyone that averages 46 in Test cricket at that age is important. South African cricket witnessed a historic day on Saturday (June 14) after they ended their trophy drought in a senior ICC men’s tournament as they beat Australia in the World Test Championship (WTC) final. Having been narrowed to 138 in the first innings, and conceding a lead of 74 runs, it was the Proteas who were on the back foot. However, Markram who was dismissed for a duck in the first innings came in handy in the decisive stage as he scored 136 to take his team home. South Africa became just the fourth team to beat Australia in a major ICC men’s final joining the likes of West Indies (1975 ODI World Cup final), Sri Lanka (1996 ODI World Cup final) and England (2010 T20 World Cup final).

One of the star players of the WTC final was Aiden Markram, who played a crucial 136-run knock in the second innings for the Proteas while skipper Temba Bavuma also had his part to play with a 66-run knock.&nbsp;

Lionel Messi and Inter Miami were held to a 0-0 draw by Egyptian side Al Ahly on Saturday as FIFAs new 32-team tournament got off to a smooth start in front of 60,927 fans in Florida.

Lionel Messi and Inter Miami were held to a 0-0 draw by Egyptian side Al Ahly on Saturday as FIFA's new 32-team tournament got off to a smooth start in front of 60,927 fans in Florida. Messi was denied a storybook stoppage-time winner when he saw his curling shot from 20 yards out tipped on to the bar by Mohamed El Shenawy as Miami piled on the pressure in the final minutes of the game. Al Ahly, who were cheered on by over 10,000 of their supporters, were left to rue a first-half penalty from Egypt international Trezeguet which was saved by Miami's Argentine keeper Oscar Ustari. But the Egyptians also had El Shenawy to thank for another fine save in the dying seconds to keep out a header from Maxi Falcon as Miami pushed for three points in the Group A clash. For organisers FIFA, who have faced heavy skepticism over the necessity for the tournament, the absence of a goal was the only disappointment on a night that delivered everything else that their president Gianni Infantino had hoped for from the opening night. Fears of a low crowd for the opener eased as the seats in the 64,000 venue began to fill up with the stadium almost full at kick-off time. Thousands of fans of Al Ahly, record 12 times African Champions League winner and 45-time league champions of Egypt, arrived at Hard Rock Stadium well ahead of kick-off and made their presence felt with singing and chanting. The stadium, home to the NFL's Miami Dolphins, witnessed chaotic scenes last year at the final of the Copa America between Argentina and Colombia where fans broke into the ground after long delays to enter. Penalty drama But there was an efficient filter system set up for ticket and security checks well away from the stadium perimeter and there were no signs of any problems. Nor was there any indication of the controversial crackdown on illegal immigrants from US President Donald Trump's administration having any impact on the game in the heavily Hispanic South Florida community. While there were no goals to celebrate, the game was far from boring with Al Ahly enjoying the better of the first half before Miami improved significantly after the break. Al Ahly opened up Miami's defence with ease in the opening minutes of the game and Emam Ashour was denied by Ustari after being put through by Trezeguet. Palestine international striker Wessam Abou Ali had an effort ruled out for offside in the 31st minute and then the Denmark-born forward had a fierce strike tipped over by Ustari. The penalty came when Telasco Segovia bundled over Zizo but Trezeguet's spot kick was weak and parried out with the former Aston Villa forward unable to react fast enough to the rebound. Miami were stronger after the break with Messi going close in the 64th minute with a free-kick which grazed the post before hitting the side-netting, tricking part of the crowd into thinking he had scored. He nearly did in stoppage time, after a well-worked short-corner but the outstretched finger tip of El Shenawy was to deny him. Miami face Porto in Atlanta on Thursday before returning home to face Brazil's Palmeiras on Monday and while those should be tougher tests, their Argentina coach Javier Mascherano was upbeat. "The truth is we leave with the feeling that we could have won it in the second half. Going forward we have to do what we did in the second half, not have any fear, shed whatever baggage we had because when we play like that, we can play even with any team," he said. Al Ahly's Spanish coach Jose Riveiro, who only took charge of the team for this tournament, said his team should have finished the game off in the first half. "It's a game of mistakes. WTC Final: ‘Unbeaten’ Bavuma breaks Hazlewood’s ‘finals streak’ as Proteas end ICC trophy drought

Temba Bavuma said some doubters questioned South Africa’s route to the WTC final, where they beat the defending champions Australia to lift their maiden crown on Saturday (June 14) at Lord's, dedicating this victory to them. While he had Markram’s backing in doing so, the seasoned opener showered praises on his team captain for getting them across the winning line. “A lot of it came from him (Bavuma) - he has always led from the front, found a way to score runs, and those sort of knocks are something people will remember you for,” Markram said of Bavuma. Besides, across both innings, Bavuma was the second-highest run-scorer for the Proteas. While he scored 36 in the first innings, with David Bedingham top-scoring with a gritty 45, he hit a match-winning 66 in the second.

Bavuma was at the heart of the run chase at Lord's, and alongside the centurion and the Player of the Final, Aiden Markram, both stitched a 157-run stand for the third wicket, laying the foundation of a brilliant five-wicket win in the WTC Final.&nbsp;

The World Test Championship (WTC) final is all set for a frantic conclusion as South Africa sit in pole position to end their drought of ICC trophies. Needing 69 runs more to win on Day 4, South Africa are all but going to win the 2025 edition of the WTC final. However, it is the next three editions that are already part of the conversation. England to host next three editions of World Test Championship final - Report

Australia could be handed a major blow in the upcoming West Indies tour as key batter and former captain Steve Smith could be ruled out owing to a finger injury. Playing on Friday (June 13) at the Lord’s Cricket Ground in the World Test Championship (WTC) final, Smith sustained a compound dislocation of a finger. This comes just 12 days before the Aussies are set to travel to the Caribbean islands for the start of the latest WTC cycle.<h2>Here's what we know about Steve Smith’s injury</h2>The 36-year-old batter was taken to hospital during the middle session after dropping a sharp chance at slip off Temba Bavuma when he was on two, with the South African captain adding a further 63 runs to his tally by stumps. This comes just 12 days before the Aussies are set to travel to the Caribbean islands for the start of the latest WTC cycle. Here's what we know about Steve Smith’s injury The 36-year-old batter was taken to hospital during the middle session after dropping a sharp chance at slip off Temba Bavuma when he was on two, with the South African captain adding a further 63 runs to his tally by stumps. Bavuma would later stitch an unbeaten stand of 143 runs for the third wicket with Aiden Markram (102 not out) which sees the Proteas within touching distance of a maiden ICC world title. Wearing a helmet while standing closer in slips than normal due to the slowish nature of the Lord's pitch, the Australian veteran took a painful blow on the right little finger after Mitchell Starc found the edge. Smith immediately left the field grimacing while spilling the catch that would have left South Africa at a precarious 3-76 and put Australia in a strong position to claim back-to-back WTC titles. Smith was assessed by medical staff in the Lord's medical rooms, before being taken to hospital for X-rays and further treatment. A compound dislocation is when bone pierces the skin, which could mean Smith needs surgery and a long rehabilitation. If this is the case, Smith could be ruled out of Australia's tour of the West Indies which starts on June 25. The first Test will be played in Barbados followed by matches in Grenada and Jamaica.

Steve Smith doubtful for crucial West Indies tour post-WTC final? Here's what we know

&nbsp;South Africa are on the brink of a historic World Test Championship (WTC) win as they need 69 more runs to end their trophy drought in an ICC competition. Playing on Friday (June 14) on Day 3 of the WTC final, the Proteas made a solid start to their second innings with skipper Temba Bavuma and Aiden Markram playing crucial roles. However, it was skipper Bavuma who took the applause having stood form at the Lord’s cricket ground despite appearing to have sustained a hamstring injury.&nbsp;Batting on 6, right before the tea break, Bavuma received a lengthy treatment on his hamstring with the management concerned. However, the Proteas skipper continued to bat and would later stitch an unbeaten stand of 143 runs with Markram. After Stumps on Day 3, batting coach Ashwell Prince reflected on the call and stated that the management had a decision to make.<h2>‘We had to make a call’</h2>"We had to make a big call whether he continues to bat and how it will affect his strokeplay, how that might affect Aiden's rhythm," Ashwell Prince, South Africa's batting coach, said. "If twos are being turned into one [or] they can't run the twos or the threes. Both of them were adamant that Temba was going to continue. He wanted to continue.”&nbsp;At the time of writing before the start of Day 4, South Africa are 213/2 in their second innings and need 69 runs to win. Aiden Markram is unbeaten on 102 while skipper Temba Bavuma is on 65 runs. The pair has already added 143 runs for the third wicket and are likely to end South Africa’s title drought in an ICC event.&nbsp;The Proteas’ only senior men’s silverware was the 1998 Champions Trophy and have since faced an unfortunate tail of near-misses including the 2024 T20 World Cup where they lost to India. If they win the WTC final, they will also become the third different nation to lift the Test Holy Grail after New Zealand and Australia.

South Africa are on the brink of a historic World Test Championship (WTC) win as they need 69 more runs to conquer the Aussies at the Lord’s Cricket Ground. Police in Florida have issued a warrant for the arrest of former NFL star Antonio Brown on a charge of attempted murder, authorities confirmed on Friday. Super Bowl-winner Brown is wanted in connection with an incident at an amateur boxing event in Miami on May 16. A copy of the warrant said "several" witnesses saw Brown fire shots following a physical altercation with another man. The warrant said Brown had grabbed the handgun from a security guard. An off-duty police officer providing security for the event detained Brown before other police arrived on the scene. No gun was found on Brown, and the other man involved in the fight with the ex-Pittsburgh Steelers and Tampa Bay Buccaneers wide receiver was not immediately located. The arrest warrant said two spent shell casings were recovered from the scene along with a discarded firearm holster. Brown later addressed the incident in a post on X on May 17, saying he had been "jumped by multiple individuals who tried to steal my jewelry and cause physical harm to me." "Police temporarily detained me until they received my side of the story and then released me," Brown wrote. "I went home that night and was not arrested." The incident is the latest in a long line of legal problems faced by Brown, who spent most of his career with the Pittsburgh Steelers before later winning a Super Bowl with Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2021. Brown was accused of sexual assault by a former trainer in a 2019 civil suit which he later settled, and also pleaded no contest to burglary and battery in 2020 after an incident with a removal truck company outside his home. Brown's NFL career came to an end after he famously removed his jersey and stormed off the field during a Tampa Bay game against the New York Jets in 2022.
