Sheikh Hasina 'close enough' to return home quickly, leaked phone call suggests

A leaked phone call allegedly between former Bangladesh prime minister Sheikh Hasina and a man named Tanvir has stirred controversy in political circles, Dhaka Tribune reported. The 10-minute call has not been officially verified.
The conversation details the challenges being faced by the Awami League leader in exile and the difficulties being faced by party leaders in Bangladesh. Tanvir is said to be a leader living in the United States, originally from the Kamrangirchar area of Dhaka.
Talking about the leaders in Bangladesh, Tanvir tells her that they are forced to stay outside their constituencies because of the legal cases open against them.
Hasina goes on to acknowledge the issue and that she has also been implicated in 113 cases. “There are murder cases against everyone," Hasina says in the call.
Tanvir also informs her about the ways in which they are rallying support for her and the party in the US. He mentions that rallies under the leadership of another Awami League leader, Emdad, are being carried out in the country.
He also informs Hasina that he might go back to Bangladesh and help organise local leadership to improve the state of the party in the country. To this, Hasina warns him of potential legal troubles if he returns. She advises him to stay in the US and provide support remotely.

Hasina also talks about the worsening economic condition of the country, claiming Bangladesh is again slipping into poverty. She goes on to accuse the current regime of looting banks and shutting down essential services.
The Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant project also comes up for discussion, with Hasina commenting on the widespread allegations of corruption surrounding the project.
Hasina said: “It doesn’t matter. If people are foolish, there’s nothing I can do about it.”

The most strange conversation was about her whereabouts. Hasina and Tanvir talk about a rumour which alleges that Hasina was transported by helicopter from Ghaziabad to Delhi. Calling it absurd, Hasina asks for photographic proof. However, she does say that she is close enough to Bangladesh to return if needed.
“They are saying some strange things. I am very close to the country. I am not far away; I am close enough to return quickly," Hasina says.
Notably, after she fled Bangladesh, rumour mills were rife with speculation that she was in the Indian national capital. However, this has not been confirmed yet.
The two also touch upon the US presidential elections, with Tanvir hinting at Donald Trump's return to power. Reacting to it, Hasina says it doesn’t matter who wins as long as they maintain political connections that benefit the Awami League in the future.
The leakedphone call, yet to be authenticated, proves Hasina wields considerable political influence despite not being in the country.
