A tragic fire broke out in a residential home in Ghaziabad's Prashant Vihar area on Saturday (Dec 21), claiming the lives of two students. The fire was caused by mosquito-repellent sticks left burning by the victims as they slept. The victims, Arun and Vansh, were found unconscious after their father, Neeraj, woke up in a room filled with smoke and flames.
<h2>Here's what happened</h2>
The incident occurred around 2:30 AM when the family of four was asleep. According to Neeraj, there was a power outage in the area due to ongoing maintenance work on electric lines. Unable to rely on electric fans for ventilation and troubled by mosquitoes, his children decided to light mosquito repellent sticks inside their room. They placed the sticks between two bricks and kept them under their bed while they slept, wrapped in blankets, with clothes also on the bed, as per NDTV report.

<h2>Father’s attempt to save children</h2>
Neeraj was awakened by the intense smoke and fire emanating from his children's room. Rushing inside, he was confronted with the horrifying scene. Despite his efforts to save them, one of his children, Vansh, had already succumbed to the flames. Arun, the other victim, suffered severe burns and was rushed to a nearby hospital but was later declared dead by medical officials.

Neighbour’s efforts to help</h2>
Neighbours attempted to extinguish the fire by filling buckets with water and breaking into the room, but their efforts came too late to save the two young victims.

Indian External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said on Sunday (Dec 22) that India can never allow others to veto its choices and would do everything right in its national interest and for the global welfare. 
EAM Jaishankar further emphasised that independence could never be confused with neutrality. 
"Independence should never be confused with neutrality. We will do whatever is right in our national interest and for the global good without being intimidated to conform. Bharat can never permit others to have a veto on its choices," he said in a video message for a function in Mumbai.
He further said that India had been "schooled too long to visualise progress and modernity as a rejection of our heritage and traditions."

After months of fear due to bomb threats received by several schools in Delhi, the Special Cell of Delhi Police revealed that at least two schools in the Rohini district received threatening emails from their own students, who wanted to postpone exams as they were not prepared. 
"After investigation by the Special Cell of Delhi Police, it was found that the emails were sent to both schools by two different students of the same school," Delhi police said in a statement.
The police added, "Both students had sent this email to stop the exam because they were not prepared for the exam paper."

However, since both of them were students, they were counselled and their parents were warned, and both those students were let off.

During their counselling, the students confessed to their actions. 
In the second incident, a student from Delhi's Paschim Vihar admitted to a similar act after the police traced an email to his home. The students said that they got the idea from previous incidents of bomb threats being made to schools. 
When these bomb threats emerged, the police conducted the research and declared them as hoaxes. 
On December 13, a total of 30 schools across Delhi received hoax bomb threat emails.

According to the officials, the driver jumped out of the car while it was still tumbling, and the rest of the people inside managed to get out after it came to a halt, luckily all unhurt. 
What seemed like a scary event then turned into a hilarious exchange when the group entered the showroom and asked for tea, leaving the onlookers and company staff baffled at their unexpected request.
Despite the chilling severity of the crash, thankfully none of the passengers were injured.

“No one was hurt… not even a single scratch. As soon as they entered, they asked for tea,” said an official working at the car showroom. 
According to officials, the passengers were travelling from Nagaur to Bikaner. The exact cause of the accident is not known yet, although high speed may have led to it. An investigation is underway.

Delhi’s air quality remained in the “very poor" category at 388 on Sunday (Dec 22) with a thin layer of fog engulfing the national capital and reducing visibility amid the cold wave conditions. The city recorded a "severe" Air Quality Index (AQI) of 420 at 7 am, however, it fell back to the "very poor" category.
The national capital recorded a minimum temperature of 8 degrees Celsius at 7 am on Sunday (Dec 22). According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the maximum temperature for the day is expected around 24 degrees Celsius.

The air quality in the national capital has been constantly deteriorating over the last week as windspeed dropped. 
Delhi recorded an average AQI of 370 on Saturday (Dec 21), falling in the “very poor” category as per the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), while Thursday (Dec 19) and Friday (Dec 20) recorded air quality over 400 in the “severe” category.
On Sunday (Dec 22) morning, Delhi recorded AQI above 400 at various stations. An AQI of 427 was recorded at Anand Vihar, 441 at Jahangirpuri, 430 at Ashok Vihar, 432 at Bawana and 429 at Dwarka Sector 8. While IGI Airport (T3) recorded an AQI of 372 and Okhla Phase 2 recorded 390.
Delhi imposes Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) Stage III measures if AQI records Above 400 which falls in the “severe” category. Residents have been advised to remain indoors, especially those falling into vulnerable categories and having respiratory conditions.

Following his arrest, a Kolkata court granted the Jammu and Kashmir Police transit remand for Munshi until 31 December. He is set to be transported to Srinagar, where he will be presented in court. As per media reports, Munshi, originally from Srinagar, had been hiding at a relative’s house in Canning after arriving in the area a few days prior. “Based on specific intelligence from Kashmir Police, we acted swiftly to arrest him,” an STF official was cited saying by India Today. The death toll in the Mohali building collapse incident has risen to two following the recovery of another body from the site on Sunday.

The multi-storey under-construction building collapsed in Punjab's Mohali on Saturday (Dec 21).

Earlier a victim of the incident, Drishti Verma succumbed to injuries. "She was rescued from the debris by the National Disaster Management Force (NDRF) in critical condition. She was rushed to Sohana Hospital," said Viraj S Tidke, officiating Deputy Commissioner.

Rescue operations by the personnel of the Indian Army and NDRF continued on Sunday (Dec 22) a day after a multi-storey under-construction building collapsed in Punjab's Mohali.

Meanwhile, an FIR was registered against the owners of the building.

Speaking to ANI, DSP Harsimran Singh Bal said, "The clearance operations are ongoing. We have registered the FIR against the owners of the building."

On Saturday, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann said that action will be taken against the culprits behind the collapse of the under-construction building.

In a post on X, CM Mann said, "Received sad news of an accident of a multi-storey building near Sohana in Sahibzada Ajit Singh Nagar (Mohali). Full administration and other rescue operations teams are deployed at the spot. I am in constant touch with the administration. We pray that there is no loss of life and property, action will be taken against the culprits. People are requested to cooperate with the administration."

Indian Army along with NDRF and State rescue teams have been relentlessly working to address the crisis.

In a post on X, the Indian Army said, "Indian Army reacted swiftly for the rescue. In a remarkable display of coordinated efforts, Indian Army Columns along with NDRF and State rescue teams have been relentlessly working to address the crisis. Engineer Task Force with debris clearance machine &amp; JCBs are operational at the site. Top debris removed &amp; efforts being done to reach the basement."

Neeraj was awakened by the intense smoke and fire emanating from his children's room. Rushing inside, he was confronted with the horrifying scene. Despite his efforts to save them, one of his children, Vansh, had already succumbed to the flames. Arun, the other victim, suffered severe burns and was rushed to a nearby hospital but was later declared dead by medical officials.

After months of fear due to bomb threats received by several schools in Delhi, the Special Cell of Delhi Police revealed that at least two schools in the Rohini district received threatening emails from their own students, who wanted to postpone exams as they were not prepared.&nbsp;

According to the officials, the driver jumped out of the car while it was still tumbling, and the rest of the people inside managed to get out after it came to a halt, luckily all unhurt.&nbsp;

What seemed like a scary event then turned into a hilarious exchange when the group entered the showroom and asked for tea, leaving the onlookers and company staff baffled at their unexpected request.

Despite the chilling severity of the crash, thankfully none of the passengers were injured.

“No one was hurt… not even a single scratch. As soon as they entered, they asked for tea,” said an official working at the car showroom.&nbsp;

According to officials, the passengers were travelling from Nagaur to Bikaner. The exact cause of the accident is not known yet, although high speed may have led to it. An investigation is underway.

Delhi’s air quality remained in the “very poor" category at 388 on Sunday (Dec 22) with a thin layer of fog engulfing the national capital and reducing visibility amid the cold wave conditions. The city recorded a "severe" Air Quality Index (AQI) of 420 at 7 am, however, it fell back to the "very poor" category.

The national capital recorded a minimum temperature of 8 degrees Celsius at 7 am on Sunday (Dec 22). According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the maximum temperature for the day is expected around 24 degrees Celsius.

On Sunday (Dec 22) morning, Delhi recorded AQI above 400 at various stations. An AQI of 427 was recorded at Anand Vihar, 441 at Jahangirpuri, 430 at Ashok Vihar, 432 at Bawana and 429 at Dwarka Sector 8. While IGI Airport (T3) recorded an AQI of 372 and Okhla Phase 2 recorded 390.

Delhi imposes&nbsp;Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) Stage III measures if AQI records Above 400 which falls in the “severe” category. Residents have been advised to remain indoors, especially those falling into vulnerable categories and having respiratory conditions.

Around two weeks after the Maharashtra swearing-in ceremony, the cabinet portfolio was announced on Saturday (Dec 21). Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde got three ministries, including Urban Development, Housing and Public Works. However, he did not get the Home portfolio, which he was interested in.&nbsp;

In the Maharashtra assembly polls, the BJP-led Mahayuti alliance secured a decisive victory, winning 235 seats. The Bharatiya Janata Party emerged as the single-largest party with 132 seats, while Shiv Sena won 57 and NCP secured 41 seats.&nbsp;

‘Mini Hindustan in Kuwait’: PM addresses Indian diaspora during 'Hala Modi' event

The body of a seven-year-old boy, missing since the collision between a tourist ferry and an Indian Navy boat off the Mumbai coast on 18 December, was recovered on Saturday (December 21) after a three-day search operation, officials told news agency PTI.
The boy, identified as Johan Mohammad Nisar Ahmed Pathan from Goa, had been aboard the ferry with his mother, who also lost her life in the incident.
A combined search-and-rescue mission involving naval boats, a helicopter, and Coast Guard vessels led to the recovery of Johan’s body.
With the recovery of his body the death toll in the Neel Kamal ferry collision has risen to 15. Of the 113 people on board the vessel, 15 have died, while 98 others, including two injured, were rescued.
The Navy craft involved in the collision had six crew members, of whom two survived, officials added.

Probe revealed that the ferry was licensed to carry only 84 passengers and six crew members but was overloaded, violating the Inland Vessel Act. Following the incident, the Maharashtra Maritime Board (MMB) revoked the ferry’s license.
Colaba police have filed a case against the Navy craft’s operator under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for negligence, reckless navigation, and endangering public safety.
The Navy has launched its own internal inquiry into the collision, one of the most serious accidents in Mumbai’s harbour area. The Navy craft involved is currently in custody, authorities told PTI.

The man said he and his wife started living separately just six months after the marriage and now his wife, who is an analyst, is demanding ₹150,000 as monthly maintenance and ₹10 million as compensation.

The man claimed his wife earns ₹80,000 monthly but still demands big amounts in compensation. He even alleged that she and her family are not letting him meet his 10-month-old son. 
“Knowing that my son is my weakness, she began using him against me. Whenever I tried to video call to see my son, she refused, saying the child was asleep,” the man said in the post.
