A day after <a href="https://www.wionews.com/india-news/many-women-returned-from-sabarimala-temple-after-learning-rituals-district-collector-nooh-262648">Sabarimala temple</a> was opened for the 41-day-long annual Mandala-Makaravilakku puja, a score of devotees thronged the shrine in a reserve forest of the Western Ghats in Pathanamthitta district on Sunday morning.

A puja was held in the Lord Ayappa temple in Sabarimala, which was opened amid tight security for the annual pooja on Saturday.

On Saturday, at least 10 women, aged between 10 to 50 years, were sent back from Pamba base camp which is nearly 6 km downhill from the temple.

The police did not let the women,&nbsp;all residents of Andhra Pradesh, trek up to the temple.

Notably, the Kerala government has made it clear that it would not provide security to any woman of menstruating age visiting the shrine, as per Devaswom Board Minister K Surendran.

<a href="https://www.wionews.com/india-news/traditions-have-to-be-followed-sabarimala-devotees-say-women-should-not-enter-shrine-262615">The opening of the shrine</a> comes days after a five-judge bench of the Supreme Court had referred a clutch of petitions seeking review of its order which paved the way for the entry of women into Sabarimala temple in Kerala to a larger seven-judge bench by a majority 3:2 ruling.

The top court also observed that the right to worship by an individual cannot outweigh the rights of a religious group.

The Supreme Court had lifted a traditional ban on entry of women of menstrual age (10-50 years) on September 28 last year.

Despite the apex court's ruling, a string of protests took place at the Sabarimala temple and its surrounding areas in the state, when several women attempted to visit the shrine but were stopped by Lord Ayyappa devotees.

"All basic arrangements are in place. We have deployed over 800 medical staff and established 16 medical emergency centres. Around 2,400 toilets and more than 250 water kiosks are ready. We have more than 1,000 sanitation workers deployed to ensure a clean atmosphere," he said.

The shrine was reopened days after a five-judge bench of the Supreme Court received petitions seeking review of its order that allowed the entry of women into the shrine. These petitions were passed on to a larger seven-judge bench by a majority ruling of 3:2.&nbsp;

Union Minister Giriraj Singh on Saturday claimed that he will retire from politics once a population control law is initiated.&nbsp;

He referred to the construction of Ram Temple in Ayodhya and population control as the basic tenets of his political career.&nbsp;

"My task to build Ram Temple in Ayodhya has come to an end. The time has come to retire for people like me. I will retire from politics once a rule to control population growth kicks in," the minister said.

Singh, 67, is infamous for making controversial remarks and had strongly favoured legislation to control the population in the country.

The BJP has a policy of not fielding leaders into elections who are older than 75 years. By that logic, he has eight years before his position in the party is invalidated.&nbsp;

In October this month, Singh participated in a yatra organised to spread awareness regarding population control and called for checking it.

Earlier, in January, the minister suggested that certain communities were especially responsible for the population explosion.

Locals, especially those who are sensitive to smog and the elderly have been complaining of breathlessness and fatigue, while urgently asking the government to combat the pollution by initiating a long-term solution.

Dr Tarun, a cardiologist at Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital said that there has been 10-15 per cent rise in the number of patients suffering from cardiovascular disease as pollution has eclipsed the city for the last few weeks.

"People should remain indoors and increase uptake of anti-oxidants which are found in abundance in fruits. Whenever one has to go out then the usage of N95 mask is mandatory because it is the only mask that protects from PM pollution. People should improve the environment at the homes by having some plants like money plant, snake plant, etc. Finally, if it is affordable then air purifiers should be used in the homes," the doctor added.

Every year, at the end of October, pollution levels spike to inhumane levels in Delhi owing to change in weather and the burning of stubble crop in the neighbouring states of Haryana, Punjab, and Uttar Pradesh.

In Gurugram, the AQI showed improvement and clocked in at 301 in the Gwal Pahari area, according to Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) data. The air quality at this level falls under a 'very poor' category.

With Sabarimala Temple here opening for the two-month-long festival season, Devaswom Board Minister Kadakampally Surendran on Sunday said that devotees were arriving at the shrine without any fear.

"I came here last night and spent some time at Sannidhanam. What I witnessed was that devotees are coming here without any kind of fear" Surendran said while talking to mediapersons earlier today.

While speaking to the reporters earlier today, Surendran said, "The mandalam season has begun as a season without any fear and apprehension. After the Supreme Court's verdict, the Chief Minister has explained the government's stand as well so there is no need of repeating it," he added.

On Saturday, a sea of devotees thronged the temple, which opened for the annual Mandala-Makaravilaku festival. However, At least 10 women, aged between 10 to 50 years, were sent back from Pamba base camp which is nearly 6 km downhill from the temple.

When asked about the women who were sent back the Minister said, "I do not know about this incident."

The opening of the shrine comes days after a five-judge bench of the Supreme Court referred a clutch of petitions seeking review of its order which paved the way for the entry of women into Sabarimala temple in Kerala to a larger seven-judge bench by a majority 3:2 ruling.

All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) on Sunday decided to file a review petition against Supreme Court verdict on Ayodhya issue.

The board also rejected the apex court order in which they granted 5 acres of land under Article 142 for a new mosque saying it was against Shariat and Waqf law.

Zafaryab Jilani, who represented the Muslim parties in the Ayodhya title suit has said that the land of the mosque belongs to Allah and under Sharia law, it cannot be given to anybody. Zafaryab Jilani is also secretary of All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB).

"We will file the review petition in the Supreme Court and we will not also accept the 5 acres of land to be given to us on the direction of the apex court, as it is against Sharia," said Jilani.

The decision was taken during the Working Committee meeting of the AIMPLB held here.

"In the Supreme Court verdict, such things have been written that will lead to confrontation with each other. According to Sharia, the Masjid remains at the place where it is once built. It is not allowed as per Sharia to accept anything in place of Masjid be it land, money or any other thing adjoining it," said Maulana Rahman while addressing the press conference.

We have urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to form a coordination committee in the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) or appoint an NDA convener for better coordination among allies, said LJP chief Chirag Paswan here on Sunday.

Speaking to ANI after the all-party meeting held ahead of the Winter Session of Parliament, Paswan said: "During the meeting, the Lok Janshakti Party urged the Prime Minister to form a coordination committee or appoint a convener in the NDA so that there is a better coordination and exchange of views among the alliance partners."

Paswan said that Shiv Sena's absence was felt at the meeting, given the fact that it is one of the oldest members of the NDA. He said that it is a matter of concern that the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) left the alliance first and then the Rashtriya Lok Samata Party (RLSP) did.

"I believe more such meetings should take place at a regular interval to make the things within the alliance better. We discussed how the alliance partners would work together during the upcoming winter session," said Paswan.

The meeting, convened by Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi, saw the attendance of PM Modi, Union Ministers Amit Shah, Thawarchand Gehlot, V Muraleedharan and Arjun Ram Meghwal.

We have urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to form a coordination committee in the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) or appoint an NDA convener for better coordination among allies, said LJP chief Chirag Paswan here on Sunday. Speaking to ANI after the all-party meeting held ahead of the Winter Session of Parliament, Paswan said: "During the meeting, the Lok Janshakti Party urged the Prime Minister to form a coordination committee or appoint a convener in the NDA so that there is a better coordination and exchange of views among the alliance partners." Paswan said that Shiv Sena's absence was felt at the meeting, given the fact that it is one of the oldest members of the NDA. Speaking at the meeting, the Prime Minister said that the government would work together with all parties in a constructive manner and take up all pending legislative works.

The administration of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) on Saturday condemned the "criminal" vandalism in the campus premises during the protest over hostel fee hike and said that it will take stringent actions against those found guilty.

"I condemn the undemocratic protests and vandalism being undertaken by the students. We have all the records. Chief Proctor Office (CPO) will take stringent actions against those who will be found guilty," Dean of Student Welfare, Umesh Kadam, told ANI.

He also urged the students to rejoin their academics and take their education seriously.

"I had also filed a complaint with the police because the students had blocked the ambulance and taken me hostage inside the ambulance. Police should file the FIR in the matter as soon as possible," Kadam said.

Associate Dean of Student Welfare Vandana Mishra, on the other hand, termed the protest and vandalism "undemocratic" and "criminal".

"This is undemocratic. Even the court has prohibited protest up to 100 meters of the administrative block. But they are sitting inside it. The way they have been vandalising the office of the Vice-Chancellor, the walls and the statue of the national icon Vivekanand is wrong. It is criminal," she said.

Mishra also said that she was gheraoed on Friday around 10:30 am, which continued till Saturday afternoon.

On Saturday, Delhi Police also registered an FIR in connection with the "defacement of public property" at the campus as students continue their protest against hostel fee hike.

Amid growing military ties between India and the United States, the Indian armed forces are moving closer towards deals for procuring American defence equipment worth over&nbsp;$7 billion from the United States of America, including Sea Guardian armed drones and naval spy planes.

The two projects are moving ahead separately as one of them is a tri-services project while the other is being steered by the Indian Navy.

"All the three services are collating their requirement for the Sea Guardian armed drones which will give us a strong capability in terms of high altitude long endurance unmanned aerial vehicles and also enhance our capabilities to carry out surveillance," government sources told ANI.

They said since some of the capability requirements of the three services would be different from each other, their collation would take a few months and a Letter of Request is expected to be issued to the American government for the government-to-government deal by the February-March time frame.

The Trump administration had approved the sale of armed drones to India in June this year and offered it to be equipped with required missiles and other systems.

Earlier, among the three services, only the Navy seemed to be interested in the procurement but now all the three services are showing interest in the project, the sources said.

The project is expected to cost over USD 4.5 billion to the defence services.

Once the Letter of Request (similar to a Request for Proposal) is issued to the American government for the deal under its Foreign Military Sales route, the American side would send the Letter of Acceptance in which it will specify the terms and conditions for the project.

The other major deal in the pipeline is the project for the acquisition of the 10 P-8I anti-submarine warfare and long-range surveillance aircraft which would be adding to the existing fleet of 12 such planes in the Indian Navy.

The sources said the project was supposed to be fielded before the Defence Acquisition Council in its last meeting but was withheld due to some reasons. "Now the proposal is expected to be put up before the DAC again in the next meeting," the sources said.

The P-8I planes are expected to cost around USD 3 billion. These planes would also be acquired under the FMS route once it gets final approval from the Cabinet Committee on Security headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

In the last over one decade, India has inducted a large number of American defence hardware including Apache attack choppers, Chinook heavy-lift Helicopters, C-17 Globemaster and C-130J Super Hercules Transport aircraft, M-777 ultra-light howitzers and AN-TPQ weapon locating radars.

The two sides are also in discussions for the NASAMS air defence system for providing protection to the national capital region.

On Saturday, Delhi Police registered an FIR for ''defacement of public property'' at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) amid the recent protests that erupted in the aftermath of fee hike. This is the first FIR to be registered in connection with the anti-hike protests.

According to many students, the administration has only partially fulfilled their demands, and more protests are planned until the demands are completely met.&nbsp;

Posters and slogans have surfaced around the campus, especially in the administration block of JNU asking for a complete roll-back of the hike provisions. Slogans along the lines of ''Reject IHA manual'', ''JNU is not your estate'' could be seen around the campus.

The key concerns of protesters include not only the recent hike in hostel and tuition fee but also their strained relationship with the university Vice-Chancellor M Jagadesh Kumar. The protestors also have issues with the draft hostel manual which underlines a dress code and curfew timings.

On Saturday, the university administration had filed a complaint against the alleged vandalism and defacement of Swami Vivekananda's statue. The statue, which was yet to be unveiled, was found defaced on November 14. &nbsp;The students have denied any role in the incident and referred to it as a miscreant's act to dilute the movement of JNU students' union against the university.

On Friday, the JNU Vice-Chancellor (VC) had appealed to the agitating students to stop their protests. "The administration has taken an extremely grim view of this condemnable and reprehensible behaviour of the agitating students and their mentors. Let us all appeal to the agitating students, once again, to stop their protests, which have been hampering studies of thousands of students on the campus who are preparing for their end-semester examinations and trying to write their term papers," the VC had said in a statement.

A vehicle of crusher plant was set ablaze by agitated farmers in Uttar Pradesh's Unnao on Sunday after the administration refused to grant them compensation for the land acquired by the Uttar Pradesh State Industrial Development Authority (UPSIDA) for the ambitious Trans-Ganga City.

"Some miscreants are doing this. We will go to villages and appeal to people to maintain peace. This is a deed of miscreants. We'll maintain peace and the work (Trans Ganga City project) will also go on," said Devendra Pandey, District Magistrate (DM) while speaking to media.

Notably, a pipe, kept in front of a power substation in Unnao, was also allegedly set ablaze by farmers in the morning to mark their protest.

The protesting farmers claim that their land was acquired by the Uttar Pradesh State Industrial Development Authority (UPSIDA) a few years back without any holding discussions with them and no compensation has been deposited in their bank accounts yet.

"We have been promised that we will get compensation. We have held several meetings with the police and officials but nothing has been done so far in the matter," said a farmer.

However, the official denied such claims said that each farmer has been given compensation to them in the past. Trans-Ganga City is being constructed for this development only. The situation is normal here," said an official from UPSIDA while speaking to ANI.

On Saturday, scores of farmers pelted stones at the JCB machine which was deployed to carry out work for the high-tech trans-Ganga city, claiming that they have not received compensation for their land acquired by the UPSIDA&nbsp;in 2012.

Trans Ganga City is the planned satellite township in the Indian province of Uttar Pradesh in the Unnao district which comes under the Kanpur metropolitan area.

The area comprises the stretch from the limits of the Unnao Municipality to the Ganga river near Kanpur on NH 25 and Unnao-Shuklaganj Highway.

The Uttar Pradesh government has also proposed a Skill Development University near the proposed Hi-tech city.

Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu on Saturday came down heavily on sensationalisation of news and said ''sensational news means senseless news''. With Business groups, political parties and personalities setting up television channels and newspapers to further their interests, core values of journalism are getting eroded, the VP said. Naidu was speaking at an event on National Press Day in Delhi: ''Sensationalism has become the order of the day, sensational news means senseless news,'' he further said. Vice President M. Yes, but it should be mentioned, this is a newspaper by so and so political party. 2/2 https://t.co/D5Jf6Qrdeo — ANI (@ANI) November 16, 2019 × The Vice President also lamented the fact that news and view are being clubbed today which, he said, is a problem. ''In the past, news used to be news, never it was interpreted or misinterpreted, now news and views are being clubbed together, that is the problem,'' he said. The VP also found no harm in political parties starting a newspaper or television channel but it should be self-explanatory, he said. Meanwhile, Information and Broadcasting Minister Prakash Javadekar has extended his greetings to the media fraternity on the occasion of National Press Day. In a tweet, he said, Press freedom is the essence of a vibrant democracy and this government is ensuring full freedom to the press.
