The Sabarimala Temple will open today for the Mandala Puja amid tight security arrangements in Kerala's Pathanamthitta district.

Kerala Devaswom Board Minister K Surendran had on Friday said that the state government will not provide protection to any woman visiting the temple and those who need protection should get an order from the Supreme Court.

Pathanamthitta District Collector, PB Nooh said that all basic necessities such as toilets, water kiosks and medical emergency centres are in place for the pilgrims.

"All basic arrangements are in place. We have deployed over 800 medical staff and established 16 medical emergency centres. Around 2,400 toilets and more than 250 water kiosks are ready. We have more than 1,000 sanitation workers deployed to ensure a clean atmosphere," he told reporters here.

Women rights activist Trupti Desai, who has been a vehement critic of the restriction on the entry of women of a certain age group in the temple, had said that she will be visiting the shrine after November 20 regardless of whether or not she is provided security cover by the state government.

The opening of the shrine comes days after a five-judge bench of the Supreme Court had referred a clutch of petitions seeking review of its order which paved the way for the entry of women into Sabarimala temple in Kerala to a larger seven-judge bench by a majority 3:2 ruling.

The top court also observed that the right to worship by an individual cannot outweigh the rights of a religious group.

While Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi, Justices A M Khanwilkar and Indu Malhotra sent the review petitions to a larger bench, Justices Nariman and Chandrachud authored a dissenting judgment.

The review petitions challenged the authority of the apex court to intervene in the belief of the people. It argued that the temple deity is a "Brahmachari" (celibate) and "centuries-old beliefs" should not be disturbed by the entry of menstruating women worshippers.

The Supreme Court had lifted a traditional ban on entry of women of menstrual age (10-50 years) on September 28 last year.

Despite the apex court's ruling, a string of protests took place at the Sabarimala temple and its surrounding areas in the state, wherein several women attempted to visit the shrine but were stopped by Lord Ayyappa devotees.

Union Minister and BJP leader Ravi Shankar Prasad on Saturday took a jibe at Congress president Sonia Gandhi and party leader Rahul Gandhi over National Herald case and said that now there is a judicial affirmation that family and business go hand-in-hand in the Congress party.

"For Congress, family and commerce run hand-in-hand, are integrally linked and given a political colour... Prasad said that there is a judicial affirmation that family and business go hand in hand and that Rahul and Sonia Gandhi hid the truth in the matter. They (Gandhi family) became the owner of properties worth Rs 2,000 crore in mere Rs 50 lakh," Prasad said in a press conference here.

He said that Jawahar Lal Nehru had started the National Herald newspaper, which stopped publishing in 2008 but even after that, Rs 90 crore and government property worth Rs 2,000 crore was handed to the paper by the previous government.

He also said that the Income Tax Appellate Tribunal yesterday pronounced an important judgement in a matter pertaining to the paper and recited some observations of the court.

"Thus from the aforesaid pact, it is palpable that the SAC company seeking assertion as a charitable institution had not disclosed fully and truly, with clear conscience and probity. Here not only there was a misrepresentation, but also suppression of material facts," Prasad said.

"The tribunal also said that we have no hesitation in holding that the entire transaction of transferring the shares of AJL to Young India was nothing but, as held by the learned Court, a clandestine and surreptitious transfer of lucrative interests in the premises to Young India," he added.

Heavy rains in October and November have brought more misery to India's farmers after summer-sown crops such as soybean, cotton, rice and vegetables suffered rain and flood damage during the wettest June-September monsoon season in 25 years.

"We couldn't harvest soybeans last month due to continuous rainfall," said Shantabai Chikhale, 65, while harvesting with her son on a one-acre plot in Maharashtra, India's second-largest soybean-producing state.

Chikhale had been expecting a bumper crop, but now estimates that two-thirds of the soybean pods on her farm in Kalamb village were knocked off by the rains, while much of the remaining crop has been damaged.

The recent wet spell is also forcing farmers, like Chikhale, to delay sowing winter crops, placing a further drag on the rural economy at a time when India's economic growth has slumped to a six-year low.

After the ample monsoon rains, The Solvent Extractors' Association (SEA) had expected India soybean harvest to be more than 10 million tonnes, just a little down on 2018's 10.3 million tonnes.

But heavy recent rains damaged the crop in Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh, which account for more than 85 per cent of India's output, and forced the trade body to cut that estimate to below 9 million tonnes, said BV Mehta, executive director of the SEA.

As a result, local soybean prices have risen to their highest in 3-1/2 years, making exports of soymeal uncompetitive, traders said.

Lower soybean production could force India, the world's biggest importer of edible oils, to import more in 2019/20 marketing year that started on October 1, said a Mumbai-based dealer with a global trading firm.

Other crops hit

The deluge also hit cotton in the world's biggest producer.

Cotton bolls were damaged by late rains in Maharashtra and Gujarat, which account for over half of the country's output, said Arun Sekhsaria, managing director of exporter DD Cotton.

Until a few weeks ago, industry officials such as Pradeep Jain, president of Khandesh Ginning and Pressing Factory Owners and Traders Association, were expecting a 20 per cent jump in cotton production in 2019 from a year ago.

But now Jain says the production could rise by 10 to 12 per cent.

Cyclone Bulbul also soaked the eastern states of Odisha and West Bengal last week, damaging rice crops in these key producing states, said Nitin Gupta, vice president for Olam India's rice business.

"Supplies from the new season crop for exports have been delayed by around two weeks," Gupta said.

Sugar mills in Maharashtra, the number two sugar state, were forced to delay the start of the new crushing season by a few weeks due to wet fields, said Prakash Naiknavare, head of the National Federation of Cooperative Sugar Factories Ltd.

The heavy downpours also elevated prices of vegetables such as onions and tomatoes and lifted food inflation to 7.89 per cent in October from a year earlier.

That, in turn, pushed inflation above the central bank's medium-term target of 4 per cent in October for the first time in 15 months.

The untimely rains also delayed winter sowing of wheat, chickpeas, vegetables and other crops.

"I need to harvest soybean before planting sugarcane. But soybean harvesting has already been delayed," says Chikhale.

As Sabarimala temple opened for the annual Mandala Pooja on Saturday, a sea of devotees flocked the premises, however, a consensus remained among many, that women of menstruating age should not be allowed to enter the shrine.

"We have waited for the annual pooja for a long time. We are very happy. Women should not be allowed to enter the temple. I don't know why Supreme Court has done this but it is not greater than the God," Gopal, a devotee at the shrine, told ANI.

Another devotee, said that even though the Supreme Court has allowed women to enter the temple, they should not do the same.

"The Supreme Court verdict is not good. Traditions have to be followed in the country. I think only women 13 and after 60 should be allowed," said Satish, another devotee who came from Bengaluru.

Earlier today, at least 10 women, aged between 10 to 50 years, were reportedly sent back from Pamba base camp which is nearly 6 km downhill from the temple.

Kerala government has made it clear that it would not provide security to any woman of menstruating age visiting the shrine, as per Devaswom Board Minister K Surendran.

The opening of the shrine comes days after a five-judge bench of the Supreme Court had referred a clutch of petitions seeking review of its order which paved the way for the entry of women into Sabarimala temple in Kerala to a larger seven-judge bench by a majority 3:2 ruling.

The Supreme Court had lifted a traditional ban on entry of women of menstrual age (10-50 years) on September 28 last year.

Nationalist Congress Party Chief (NCP) chief Sharad Pawar said that there are no chances of 'mid-term' elections in the state and a stable government would be formed sooner or later.

"Since attempts to form a government have started so sooner or later the government would be formed. There are no chances of mid-term elections but a stable government would be formed that will last for 5 years," said Sharad Pawar, addressing a press conference here on Friday.

Recently, the Congress and the NCP, which fought the assembly polls together, and the Shiv Sena have prepared a draft Common Minimum Programme (CMP).

Amid discussions over formation of government in Maharashtra, Congress president Sonia Gandhi and NCP Chief would meet on Sunday to discuss their next course of action.

Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge, who is Congress' in-charge for Maharashtra, said on Friday that his party alone cannot take decisions and the two leaders will meet on Sunday.

"Congress alone can't decide things. NCP chief Sharad Pawar and AICC president Sonia Gandhi will sit together on November 17 and discuss the next course of action. They will decide how to solve this problem. Only after that, the other actions will follow," Kharge told ANI.

The three parties are having talks for the formation of the non-BJP government in the state where the President's Rule was imposed earlier this week.

The Shiv Sena and the BJP, who had fought the polls together, could not form the government due to differences over power-sharing.

The BJP emerged as the single-largest party in the state with 105 seats in 288-member assembly followed by Shiv Sena 56, NCP 54 and Congress 44.

Meanwhile, a joint delegation of Shiv Sena, Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and Congress leaders has sought time from Maharashtra Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari for a meeting on Saturday to discuss farmers' issues.
