Former Air Force chief BS Dhanoa on Saturday termed S-400 missile system as a `game-changer` and stressed the need to speed up the defence acquisition process. "I have always said that S-400 is a game-changer ... It is a very good deal by the government to get S-400," Dhanoa said at an event on Saturday. India signed a $5.43-billion deal with Russia for the purchase of five S-400 systems during the 19th India-Russia Annual Bilateral Summit in New Delhi on October 5 last year for long-term security needs. According to Russian Deputy Prime Minister Yuri Borisov the missile systems will be delivered by early 2021. The former IAF chief said that defence deals should not be dragged into politics as it delays the process."See, for example, the Bofors deal case -- it`s a very good gun but the whole thing got mired in controversy," he said. Batting to accelerate the defence purchase process, he said: "You have many agencies that do audits in the deal, slowing down defence modernisation as a consequence. "Dhanoa reiterated that "things would have been different" if Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman were flying Rafale fighter jet and not MIG21 during the dogfight with Pakistani jets after Balakot airstrike last year. Snapping back at BSP supremo <a href="https://www.wionews.com/india-news/kota-infant-deaths-mayawati-slams-priyanka-gandhi-over-her-silence-271593">Mayawati</a> for criticising her of being silent over the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/india-news/nine-more-infants-die-in-kota-hospital-death-toll-rises-to-hundred-271585">Kota infants death</a> incident, Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Saturday said that Mayawati herself should visit Rajasthan to meet the kin of the victims.

Priyanka's reaction comes after Mayawati questioned her silence on the death of infants in Kota and said the Congress leader should have met the women who had lost their children due to "laxity" of the Ashok Gehlot-led government in Madhya Pradesh.

"She (Mayawati) should visit Rajasthan to meet victims' families," Gandhi told reporters while responding to the BSP chief's statement.

Expressing grief over the death of the infants, Congress leader said that she has taken the details of the case.

"I have taken details of the issue and a Congress team has gone there to get more information on the matter," she said.

Taking cognisance of the issue, Mayawati had on Thursday said that the Ashok Gehlot-led <a href="https://www.wionews.com/india-news/19-trains-running-late-due-to-low-visibility-in-northern-railway-region-271802">Madhya Pradesh</a> government remains "insensitive and irresponsible towards it, which is extremely condemnable."

In another post, Mayawati had said that what was "sadder" is the "top leadership of the Congress and, in particular, its woman general secretary" staying silent on the issue.

She added that if the "woman general secretary of the Congress" will not visit <a href="https://www.wionews.com/india-news/kota-infant-deaths-action-being-taken-against-those-at-fault-says-harish-rawat-272058">Kota</a> to meet the mothers who lost their children, then her meetings with families of victims in Uttar Pradesh will be considered for political interest and drama.

The death toll of infants in <a href="https://www.wionews.com/india-news/instead-of-opposing-caa-focus-on-children-dying-in-kota-shah-tells-gehlot-271963">JK Lon Hospital</a> in Kota reached 107, said, a hospital official.

A three-member state government committee of doctors, who was sent to investigate the matter on December 23 and 24, found that Kota's JK Lon Hospital is short of beds and it requires improvement.

However, the committee gave a clean chit to the doctors for any lapses over the recent death of infants admitted there.

"We need to urgently rethink our policy of posting senior government employees in running cooperative societies from the Department of Cooperatives or elsewhere. Registrars are appointees who are supposed to audit and see the cooperatives and societies function appropriately according to rules and regulations. How can they audit independently if they run the organisation themselves when they become MDs or Chairmen," she wrote in a message to Ashok Kumar, Secretary Cooperatives.

This statement from Bedi came just a day after Puducherry Agriculture Minister R Kamalakannan was forced to travel by a public bus from <a href="https://www.wionews.com/india-news/heavy-rains-alert-in-tamil-nadu-district-administration-orders-closure-of-schools-today-265844">Karaikal</a> to Puducherry to attend a Cabinet meeting on Friday after a petrol bunk refused to supply diesel for his car. The petrol station refused to supply diesel over alleged pending dues from the government departments.

Further talking about the incident, Bedi stated, "This latest fiasco when petrol was not given/ available for the car of an Hon'ble Minister, why one such Cooperative is a consequence of this long-lasting malady. And it needs an urgent course correction with a sense of urgency."

She also directed the Secretary Cooperatives to submit a report within 15 days on the financial, administrative, and performance status of each cooperative followed by societies in order to stem the rot.

Jamia Varsity to open on Monday after three weeks of anti-CAA protests

The whole nation felt the pain when Chandrayaan-2's lander crashed&nbsp;on the lunar surface just moments before it was about to create history. This New Year, however, ISRO chief K Sivan once again gave Indians a reason to rejoice when he announced that four astronauts have been shortlisted for India's first manned space mission Gaganyaan. The Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on his Independence Day Speech last year said that by 2022 India would send its astronauts to space.

So what is Gaganyaan? What is the&nbsp;significance&nbsp;of the mission? This article attempts to answer all key questions related to India's ambitious new programme.

Also read:&nbsp;<a href="https://www.wionews.com/india-news/gaganyaan-mission-four-astronauts-selected-to-undergo-training-in-russia-says-isro-chief-k-sivan-271425">Gaganyaan mission: Four astronauts selected to undergo training in Russia, says ISRO chief K Sivan</a>

What is Gaganyaan?&nbsp;

Gaganyaan is a crewed orbital spacecraft that is expected to take three astronauts to space for a period of seven days. For the mission, India's space agency is planning to carry out two unmanned missions in December 2020 and July 2021, followed by the manned mission by December 2021. ISRO's Geo-Synchronous Launch Vehicle (GSLV) will be used for the manned space mission.

"The total fund requirement for the Gaganyaan Programme is within Rs.10,000 crore," as per a government statement. The spacecraft will be placed in a low earth orbit of 300-400 km. &nbsp;&nbsp;

Why is it significant?

If India successfully sends four astronauts to space, it will be only the fourth nation to do so after the United States, China and Russia. It will re-establish India's space research position amongst giants such as the US, China and Russia, which spends way more money than India on space programmes.&nbsp;

What is the Russian connection?

The all-weather friendship of India and Russia has also been reflected in the field of space. India's only astronaut to travel space Rakesh Sharma, also undertook his journey in Russia's Interkosmos programme. For Gaganyaan, ISRO signed an agreement with Russia's Glavkosmos to select and train Indian astronauts for the space mission. Earlier ISRO chief had said that 12 astronauts from India would go to Russia for training and four would be shortlisted. The selected astronauts will now undergo rigorous training for 15 months In India and abroad.&nbsp;

What will be the challenges encountered by astronauts to get mission ready?

The Gaganyaan crew will first undergo medical examination followed by rigorous physical training even for military personnel. The idea behind this tough training programme is to get astronauts accustomed to gravitational changes which will cause physiological alterations.

Often, astronauts face motion sickness when they experience weightlessness in the space. The changing gravity also results in fluctuations in blood circulation especially during re-entry to earth or landing which also makes astronauts unconscious due to lack of internal pressure. For the mission preparation, astronauts will be put under a centrifuge which will spin rapidly in order to adapt them for gravitational acceleration. &nbsp; &nbsp;

The astronauts will also be acquainted with life support systems, navigation and thermal controls, astronomy, and other necessary sciences if a need arose of manual intervention or emergency.

Generally, astronauts are trained for four years, but Indian space explorers would only get only two years for meeting the launch deadline.&nbsp;

What can be the impact of Gagnayaan?

The success of Gaganyaan would unlock many doors to experiment with more spaceflight missions. It will also give boost to India's ambition of setting up its own space station.&nbsp;

Those opposing the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) should introspect over their stance on the legislation after the incident of vandalism at the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/south-asia/mob-dispersed-from-nankana-gurdwara-after-man-released-who-abducted-sikh-girl-272031">Nankana Sahib Gurdwara in Pakistan</a> on Friday, Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri said on Saturday.

Speaking to ANI, Puri said that the Friday's incident at one of the holiest Sikh shrines provides yet another proof of the state of minorities in Pakistan.

"This was a wanton act of vandalism, stone-pelting and desecration against one of the holiest Sikh shrines. Those who have taken a stand on the Citizenship Amendment Act clearly either do not realise what they are saying or this is deliberately misleading or treachery," said Puri.

"If any proof were needed about the state of the minorities in Pakistan, this incident after the Friday prayers yesterday provided that proof," Puri said.

"All these people (CAA opposers) should do some series introspection after yesterday's incident."

An angry group of local residents pelted stones at <a href="https://www.wionews.com/india-news/stone-pelting-at-nankana-sahib-gurdwara-india-calls-it-wanton-acts-of-destruction-271983">Gurdwara Nankana Sahib</a> in Pakistan on Friday evening.

The group was led by the family of a boy who had allegedly abducted Sikh girl Jagjit Kaur from her home in August last year.

India has strongly condemned the incident and called upon Pakistan to take immediate steps to ensure the safety and welfare of the members of the Sikh community.

"All these people (CAA opposers) should do some series introspection after yesterday's incident." An angry group of local residents pelted stones at Gurdwara Nankana Sahib in Pakistan on Friday evening. The group was led by the family of a boy who had allegedly abducted Sikh girl Jagjit Kaur from her home in August last year. India has strongly condemned the incident and called upon Pakistan to take immediate steps to ensure the safety and welfare of the members of the Sikh community.

Amid ongoing nationwide protests over the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA), Union Minister of State (MoS) Jitendra Singh said that the Central government's next step would be the deportation of Rohingyas from the country.

"The Citizenship (Amendment) Act is applicable across the country including in Jammu and Kashmir. By implication, what will happen here is that the next move will be in relation to the Rohingyas," Singh said while speaking at a function here on Friday.

"Jammu had a sizeable population of Rohingyas and a list would be prepared and their biometrics would also be collected. They'll have to leave India and details being worked out. CAA doesn't give them leverage. The government is considering ways to deport them," he added.

The Union Minister further said that the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019 had become applicable in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir the day it was passed by the Parliament.

"They (Rohingyas) are not part of the six religious minorities in three neighbouring states. They are from Myanmar. So, they have to go back as they are not eligible for Indian citizenship under this act," Singh said.

Right from its inception in the 1960s ISRO’s role has been to provide solutions to various problems at hand using space technology, and today ISRO’s high-end technology is applied to makes the life and livelihood easier for farmers, fishermen and even the common man, said former ISRO chairman Dr A.S. Kiran Kumar.&nbsp;

He was addressing students at IIT-Madras as a part of the Spotlight Lecture series that was conducted as a part of the institute’s annual Tech Fest Shaastra.

Delving into the feats that ISRO achieved during its initial years, Dr Kumar recalled the SITE (Satellite Instructional Television Experiment which was Dr Vikram Sarabhai’s dream. It was conducted during 1975-76 using America’s Application Technology Satellite (ATS-6). SITE demonstrated the potential of satellite technology as an effective mass communication media for a developing country like India.&nbsp;

“By using a borrowed American satellite, we were able to provide then DTH-equivalent TV service to nearly 2400 villages and this was hailed as the greatest sociological experiment in the world”, he said. Developmental television programmes were beamed with the objectives in the areas of family planning, agriculture, national integration, education, teacher training, occupational skills, health and hygiene etc. Education and information inputs were provided in several languages.

Speaking of how ISRO’s first launch facility was set up at a fishing hamlet in Thumba, Thiruvananthapuram in the 1960s, he recalled that the fishermen had to vacate the place when the launches used to take place. “Back then, the team assured the fisherfolk that if they vacated the place today, the whole country would benefit in the future.” &nbsp;
“From the 1990s we have been providing information to fishermen on potential fishing zones and this was derived from remote sensing satellite data. By analyzing data on sea surface temperatures and chlorophyll and other parameters we are able to help fishermen reach the zones where there is assured fish catch. By reducing their searching time and saving fuel we are able to save their industry over Rs.15,000 crore every year.”

Currently, with India’s own navigation system the fishermen are able to receive updates in their native languages, thanks to a small battery-powered gadget fitted on their boats. When the mobile is connected to the naive gadget via Bluetooth, the location of the potential fishing zone is shared via an Application.&nbsp;

Dr Kumar says that, true to Dr Vikram Sarabhai’s vision we have made great progress in utilizing space technology for rapidly developing communication technologies, broadcast capabilities, weather forecasting, resource mapping, crop monitoring etc. ‘“There was a time when thousands of people died during cyclones, but today the casualty has come down to very few as we have satellites that can predict a high level of accuracy.”

Adding that nearly 60 government institutions have tied up with ISRO to use the data for various purposes, Dr Kumar states that India would require nearly three times as many satellites to use them to solve various problems when compared to around 55 satellites that are being presently operated.&nbsp;

“Add up all the money that we have spent on ISRO since its inception and still it would be less than the annual NASA budget”, he says about the frugal launch capability and budgetary allocation of ISRO.

He also threw light on an ISRO-NASA collaboration that came into being after India built and launched the advanced RISat (radar Imaging satellite). “NASA and ISRO are working on a 1 billion dollar project (where the US is bearing over 90pc of the cost) to build an advanced Sweep SAR(synthetic aperture radar) that can map the whole earth’s landmass is a short period of time. This collaborative NISAR (NASA-ISRO Synthetic Aperture Radar) indicates how foreign agencies acknowledge our demonstrated capability.”

Rajasthan Health Minister Raghu Sharma on Friday blamed the previous BJP-led government in the state for the shortage of beds at a Kotal Hospital, where 105 children died over a month's time.

Rajasthan Health Minister Raghu Sharma on Friday blamed the previous BJP-led government in the state for the shortage of beds at a Kotal Hospital, where 105 children died over a month's time. "It is unfortunate that the people who are raising issues that there are two children on one bed at the Kota hospital, they were in power for five years. 60 beds had been approved for the hospital in the year 2012. Where have they gone? Who is going to answer?" Sharma was quoted as saying. He said that the Congress government in the state had sanctioned 120 beds, of which 60 were for Pediatrics, for the hospital in the year 2012."However, when the government changed, only Rs 1.7 crore out of Rs 5 crores were released for the same. If the entire sum of the funds had been approved, the hospital would not have had to put two children on one bed," Sharma reportedly said. "Nevertheless, arrangements for a centralised oxygen system will soon be finalised and ventilator and nebulisers will be made available to the hospital. The hospital administration has sufficient funds. If more money is required, it will be sanctioned by the state government," he was quoted as saying. Sharma, who visited the hospital today, said that he discussed all the issues with the administration and assured that all the requirements of the hospital will be fulfilled before January 15. According to officials, as many as 105 children have died at the hospital in over a month`s time. (With inputs from ANI)
