RG Kar College graft case: Indian SC rejects Sandip Ghosh's plea challenging HC order on CBI probe

The Indian Supreme Court on Friday (Sept 6) rejected RG Medical College and Hospital's former principal Sandip Ghosh's plea that challenged Calcutta High Court's order on the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI)probe into the institute's financial irregularities case.

The bench headed by the Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud said that the CBI is investigating both the rape-murder incident at the college and the financial irregularities cases.

There was nojustification for Sandeep Ghosh's interference in the PIL (Public Interest Litigation)on which the high court had ordered a CBI investigation into corruption allegations, the bench said.

Ghosh arrested in corruption case

Earlier this week, Ghosh wasarrested by the CBI in connection with the corruption case.On Wednesday, Ghoshfiled a petition in the Supreme Court against a Calcutta High Court decision that ordered the CBIto probe into the graft case against him.

Ghosh was under investigation for alleged corruption and financial irregularities at the college and hospital, following a directive from a single bench of the high court, which ordered the CBIto probe the matter.

He was sent to 8-day police custody on Tuesday.

Ghosh ‘ordered urgent renovation’ after rape-murder case

In the August 9 rape and murder of the trainee postgraduate doctorat the RG Kar College,Ghosh has been accused of indulging in the cover-up of the case and hasundergone two rounds of polygraph tests.

On Thursday, the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in West Bengal alleged that Ghosh ordered an urgent renovation near the crime site.

“The order, signed by Sandip Ghosh, former director of RG Kar Medical College, is dated August 10, just one day after the victim's death. Despite allegations from colleagues and protesters about tampering with the crime scene, the Police Commissioner denied it," West Bengal BJP President Sukanta Majumdar said in a post on X.

Ghosh's house raided by ED

Earlier on Friday,the Enforcement Directorate- carried out raids at the residenceof Ghosh,among other places in Kolkata in a case about the financial irregularities in the institute, the news agency ANI reported.

The ED had registered a caseunder the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) to probe money laundering charges against Ghosh in the case.
