Meditation has taken over the entire world in an unimaginable way. While until a few years back, meditation was seen as something only a particular section of society practised, today it is something seen as a necessity for all. This is especially true when stress has crept into everyone's lives, irrespective of what you do or who you are. Meditation promises to alleviate anxiety and tension. People who practice meditation will tell you how it has changed their lives. While you cannot get rid of stress, regularly practising meditation can help you manage it better. On World Meditation Day, let's explore the various benefits of meditation and a few easy techniques.

Benefits of meditation

1. Meditation lets you focus on the present. It aims to help you focus on the now and here and that this is what matters.

2. It helps you imbibe skills and methods to manage stress better. This could be a breathing technique or practising mindfulness to focus on the present.

3. People who meditate regularly, experience lesser negative emotions.

4. Meditation also makes you more self-aware since it makes you focus on your breathing, how you feel in a particular part of your body, the thoughts going through your mind, etc.

5. You also start to become more patient and tolerant since you are now getting a grasp of how to respond to situations in a better way.

6. Meditation is also good for your heart health as it lowers the resting heart rate.

7. Similarly, it also helps control your blood pressure.

8. Meditation is a great way to get a good night's sleep.

5 easy meditation techniques

If you have been thinking about taking up this life-altering practice but are confused about where to start, don't stress. Meditation has evolved over time and there are a bunch of options you can explore. Here are some of them.

1. Breathing Meditation: This is the most commonly practised form of meditation and one highly recommended for those just venturing into it. It is great for your mind as it helps sharpen it. Research says that breath-focused meditation is linked to attention span and brain health. In this method, you must focus on your breathing in several patterns. When you feel stressed, your breathing often becomes shallow. Deep breathing helps you calm down and be at peace. The ideal method is the 4-7-8 technique. Breathe in for four seconds, hold for seven and exhale for eight. Repeat 5-7 times.

2. Mindfulness Meditation: Cambridge dictionary describes it as the art of being aware of your mind, body, and thoughts in the present moment. Mindfulness pushes you to focus on the present. As part of this practice, you need to be mindful of everything that is happening around you. The way something smells, how an action makes you feel, how a food tastes and how it feels on your tongue, etc. You can practice mindfulness at any time, during a meal, while working out, while working, etc. You need to set an intention for an act and then focus on that particular aspect.

3. Guided Meditation: This is again best for beginners or those who need help focusing and keeping out unnecessary thoughts while meditating. Guided meditation relies on the power of images and visualisation to help one become self-aware. It takes you on a journey through a physical place or an abstract place and asks you to focus on certain things. Sit in the corner of a quiet room, close your eyes and imagine yourself in a serene setting, such as a beach or a garden. Think about the place and everything you see or hear.

4. Mantra Meditation: Sounds hold immense power to help us delve inside ourselves. Mantras comprise certain words that can profoundly affect one or more parts of your body. There are special mantras to focus on your heart region, your brain and even your gut. Mantras are sacred sounds that lead to specific psychological states. This practice involves saying or hearing the same mantra over and over. Eventually, your mind begins to block out negative thoughts and you start to feel one with the mantra, even if it is in a language that you do not understand. This technique is good for those looking for focus and clarity.

5. Progressive Muscle Relaxation Meditation: As part of this practice, you need to focus on a group of muscles in your body and tighten and loosen them one by one. Start from the head and move down slowly. Identify a group of muscles in one region and tighten them for a few seconds. Then release them slowly. Now move to the next set of muscles and repeat the process. This technique can help you calm down after a long and tiring day. Progressive muscle relaxation is best practised just before bedtime as it calms down your mind and body to help you sleep better.

World Meditation Day: 5 easy meditation techniques to help you embark on a life-altering journey

Chalmers’ Division of Applied Acoustics researchers conducted a laboratory investigation in which test subjects were subjected to concentration tests while being exposed to background traffic noise. The individuals were asked to stare at a computer screen and respond to specific letters before rating their perceived workload. According to the study, the individuals performed much worse on the performance test and felt that the task was more difficult to complete with road noise in the background.

“What is unique about our study is that we were able to demonstrate a decline in performance at noise levels as low as 40 dB, which corresponds to the regular noise level in an office environment or a kitchen,” says Leon Muller, Doctoral student at the Division of Applied Acoustics in the Department of Architecture and Civil Engineering.

The background noise consisted of two audio sequences simulating trucks passing by at a distance of 10 and 50 metres. Both sequences were normalised to the same total indoor level of 40 dB.

Stress hormones during pregnancy linked to improved language skills in children: Research

“The audio sequence simulating the closer passages, where the sound changes significantly as the vehicle passes by, was usually the one that bothered the test subjects the most,” Muller says. “This could be because traffic that is further away is perceived as a more constant drone.”

Housing is built closer to roads now.

The new results emphasise an already problematic situation of negative impact on health and job performance due to traffic noise. In recent years, the distance between roads and newly built housing in Swedish cities has been allowed to shrink – a trend that can also be seen internationally.

Put somewhat simplistically, the Swedish regulations for where construction is permitted are based on the average outdoor noise level over a 24-hour period – meaning that they do not take individual pass-bys into account. In addition, current regulations do not cover the peaks of low-frequency noise indoors, which is difficult to avoid and is, according to research, more disruptive and therefore more impacting on human health.

In one study modelling low-frequency noise, Jens Forssen, Professor of applied acoustics at Chalmers, showed that such noise is primarily generated by heavy traffic at low speeds, and is difficult to shut out even with well-insulated windows and buildings that comply with all the construction norms and guidelines for sound insulation.

Reduced vehicle speed can increase the noise exposure indoors.

“The calculations for different types of facades show that it is difficult to achieve ideal indoor sound environments near heavily trafficked roads,” Forssen says. “Reducing speeds is not a solution, as our calculations show that the indoor noise exposure can even increase at lower speeds.”

Further, Forssen says that noise and the sound environment are a factor that is often considered too late in the planning process, and that there are advantages that could be achieved if adjustments were made in order to better utilise the space in terms of noise pollution.

The researchers also agree that the most effective solution would be to avoid urban densification in areas where traffic noise would have too great an impact on health and wellbeing.
Even mild traffic noise has an adverse effect on work performance: Study

High levels of the stress hormone cortisol during the third trimester of pregnancy may boost speech and language abilities in the first three years of a child’s life, according to research presented at the 25th European Congress of Endocrinology in Istanbul. The findings help us understand how cortisol influences foetal and newborn development.

Early language development is an excellent predictor of how well a newborn’s neural system developed in the womb. Prenatal exposure to cortisol, a steroid hormone that assists the body in reacting to stress, controls foetal growth and influences brain development. However, it is still unknown how cortisol influences early language development.

Odense University Hospital researchers reviewed data from the Odense Child Cohort on 1,093 Danish toddlers aged 12-37 months, as well as cortisol levels in 1,093 Danish women during their third trimester of pregnancy. They observed that, whereas females comprehended more words between the ages of 12 and 21 months, boys exposed to high cortisol levels in the womb could speak more syllables between the ages of 12 and 37 months.

“To our knowledge, this is the first study to investigate the association between maternal cortisol levels and language development in children over time, also taking offspring sex and maternal educational level into account,” said Dr Anja Fenger Dreyer, who was involved in the study.

She added: “We have had access to a large study cohort, high-quality methods of analysis and relevant covariates, making our study an important contribution to the physiological understanding of prenatal cortisol exposure in fetal maturation and child development.”

The team will next assess whether children exposed to high cortisol in the womb are more likely to have higher intelligence quotient (IQ) scores. Except for the data on maternal cortisol levels and early language development, the Odense Child Cohort also has data on intelligence tests carried out by children aged 7.

“Early language development in children is known as a predictor for a cognitive function later in life, such as attention, memory and learning, so we want to investigate whether prenatal cortisol exposure is also associated with IQ scores of children aged 7 years old,” said Dr Fenger Dreyer.

Stress hormones during pregnancy linked to improved language skills in children: Research

British writer Salman Rushdie made his first public appearance at a New York gala on Thursday, a year after he was attacked on stage that nearly took his life. The award-winning author, lost sight in one eye due to the incident. On Thursday he was given an honorary award at an event hosted by PEN America, a group that defends freedom of expression and literature of which Rushdie was previously the president.

Rushdie, wearing glasses with a black lens over his right eye, was photographed on the red carpet for the gala at the American Museum of Natural History near Central Park in Manhattan.

His attendance was not announced beforehand. The author though delivered an emotional address to the 700 guests.

"Terrorism should not terrorize us. Violence must not deter us. The struggle continues," Rushdie proclaimed in French, Spanish and English, according to a PEN America press release.

Rushdie lived in hiding for years after Iran's first supreme leader Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini ordered his killing for what he deemed the blasphemous nature of "The Satanic Verses," published in 1988.

He has since become an icon of free speech and is still an outspoken defender of the power of words.

On August 12, 2022, he was at a literary conference in the small cultural and bucolic town of Chautauqua in upstate New York when a man armed with a knife stormed the stage as Rushdie was about to begin speaking.

He was stabbed around 10 times and Rushdie's literary agent Andrew Wylie revealed in October that he had lost sight in one eye and the use of one hand.

Bystanders and guards subdued the assailant, who was immediately arrested, charged and jailed pending trial.

Hadi Matar, a 24-year-old from New Jersey with roots in Lebanon, pleaded not guilty to assault charges.

"If it had not been for these people, I most certainly would not be standing here today. I was the target that day, but they were the heroes. The courage that day was all theirs. I owe my life to them," Rushdie told the crowd on Thursday.

In February, around the release of his latest novel "Victory City," the writer said in his first interview since the attack that he had faced a lot of difficulty writing and was suffering from post-traumatic stress.

The attack shocked many in the West but was welcomed by extremists in some Muslim countries.

(With agency inputs)

Salman Rushdie makes first public appearance since knife attack last year: 'Violence must not deter us'

The pursuit of education often comes with immense pressure and stress, which can significantly impact students' mental well-being. Transitioning from crucial academic milestones often overwhelms students, leading to heightened anxiety and other mental health challenges. Recognising the significance of addressing these issues, this article delves into the impact of mental healthcare on students' minds during this critical phase, highlighting the need for effective support systems and strategies to promote their overall well-being.

The Impact of Examinations on Students

Examinations, especially those in the 10th and 12th grades, are pivotal moments in a student's academic journey. They bring immense pressure to perform well, leading to heightened stress and anxiety. The fear of failure, peer competition, parental expectations, and the uncertainty of the future can burden students' minds, negatively affecting their mental health. It is essential to acknowledge that the impact of these exams extends beyond academics alone. Students' mental well-being can be severely compromised, leading to feelings of overwhelm, burnout, depression, and even self-doubt.

The Importance of Mental Healthcare

Mental healthcare is crucial in supporting students' well-being, particularly during the post-10th and 12th examination periods. It encompasses a range of interventions and strategies designed to address students' emotional, psychological, and social needs. By prioritising mental healthcare, educational institutions can foster a nurturing environment that promotes healthy coping mechanisms, resilience, and overall mental well-being.

One aspect of mental healthcare is creating awareness and reducing the stigma associated with mental health issues. Open discussions, workshops, and educational campaigns can help students and their families understand the importance of mental well-being and encourage them to seek help when needed. Additionally, providing accessible and confidential counselling services within schools can offer students a safe space to express their concerns and receive professional guidance.

The Role of Support Systems

Effective support systems are vital in ensuring students receive the mental health care they require. This includes collaboration between schools, parents, and mental health professionals. Schools can incorporate well-being programmes into their curricula, promoting stress management techniques, mindfulness, and self-care practices. Encouraging healthy competition, rather than fostering a hyper-competitive environment, can also alleviate some of the pressures students face.

Parents and guardians also play a crucial role in supporting their children's mental health. By actively engaging in their child's education, providing emotional support, and maintaining open lines of communication, parents can help alleviate stress and create a positive home environment.

Mental healthcare professionals, including counsellors and therapists, play a vital role in the well-being of students. They can offer guidance, support, and interventions tailored to the specific needs of students post-examinations. These professionals can help students navigate through their emotional challenges, develop healthy coping mechanisms, and build resilience for the future. Hence, they should be readily available in educational institutions to provide guidance and support to students. These professionals can help teens navigate through their emotional challenges, develop healthy coping mechanisms, and build resilience for the future.

"By prioritising mental healthcare, educational institutions can create supportive environments that nurture students' well-being and promote their overall development. Recognising the impact of stress and anxiety on academic performance, schools can incorporate mental health programmes into their curricula. These programmes can focus on stress management techniques, mindfulness exercises, and self-care practices to equip students with effective coping mechanisms," says Ms Sana Afreen, CCO and Asst. Director of Program Management at Rizzle. "Parents and guardians also have an essential role in supporting their child's mental well-being during this critical period. They should actively engage in their child's education, being attentive to their emotional needs and offering encouragement and reassurance. Maintaining open lines of communication allows parents to understand their child's concerns and provide appropriate guidance and support."

To conclude, Afreen stated, "Furthermore, fostering an educational culture that promotes healthy competition rather than perpetuating a hyper-competitive environment is crucial. Emphasising collaboration, personal growth, and learning from failures can alleviate the immense pressure students often experience. Schools can create a more balanced and supportive atmosphere by shifting the focus from solely academic achievements to holistic development."

Why mental health support should be integrated into education | Mental Health Awareness Month 2023

While many consider washboard abs a sign of peak fitness, medical experts believe that ultra-low body fat per cent can be extremely harmful, especially for women. It can lead to a compromised immune system, fatigue, muscle wastage, vitamin deficiencies, and in severe cases, organ shrinkage.

Speaking exclusively to WION, Dr Tvisha Parikh, Consultant Sports and Exercise Medicine Physician at Sir HN Reliance Foundation Hospital and Research Centre, Mumbai, answered the most asked questions about washboard abs and explained why they're unhealthy, especially for women.

Why is body fat important?

Some amount of body fat is important for normal physiological functions in both women and men. Each part of the human body is made up of cells. Fats, especially cholesterol, are an important component of these walls. Besides that, many crucial hormones in the body are actually made from cholesterol and hence disruption of the fat percentage in the body disrupts the hormonal balance. At a physical level, fat acts as
insulation for the body, protecting us from cold temperatures. Women have more body fat than men to sustain these functions effectively. However, the thing to note is that whereas some fat is important, an excess is extremely harmful to the body too.

Does aiming for abs affect one's overall health?

It really depends on the method you adopt towards this aim. If you follow a good lifestyle modification program aiming towards this under the supervision of an experienced and qualified professional, it should enhance your health. If you adopt a method which is not physiological, it can affect your health. We have seen many detrimental effects on the body ranging from short and long-term hormonal disturbances, sexual disturbances, fractures, psychological disturbances, etc.

What happens when women have very low body fat?

As mentioned earlier, many hormones are in fact synthesized from cholesterol. One of them is the important female hormone called estrogen. Estrogen is not only important from the gynaecology health point of view but plays a huge role in the metabolism of many other systems in the body and less cholesterol leads to
disruption in estrogen production. Usually, most females who target low body fat tend to suffer from a condition called Relative Energy Deficiency Syndrome – RED-S. In this condition, females suffer a myriad of problems ranging from disruption in the menstrual cycle, gastrointestinal functions, bone health, immunity, metabolic health, psychological health, etc.

If someone wants to have abs and also doesn't want to suffer from insufficient body fat, is there a way to work around this?

Yes, it is possible to do this. To achieve this, a systematic approach to exercise as well as nutrition is paramount, in sync with sleep and recovery among other lifestyle measures. An important thing to understand is that abs are a group of muscles in the abdominal region. Muscles become prominent and strong by exercising them and not just losing fat. It is crucial that the person’s health program is continuously
monitored to adjust to any other health conditions.

Doctor explains why it's unhealthy for women to have washboard abs; answers internet's most asked questions

Sebaceous filaments are tiny structures that occur naturally in our skin. They are commonly found on the nose, chin, and forehead, and appear as small, pin-like dots or darkened spots.

Sebaceous filaments are composed of a combination of sebum, which is the skin's natural oil, and dead skin cells. Unlike blackheads, which are formed when the opening of a hair follicle becomes clogged with sebum and dead skin cells, sebaceous filaments are a normal part of the skin's physiology and are not considered a form of acne.

The dark appearance of sebaceous filaments is due to the oxidation of the oil and skin cells when they come into contact with the air. This oxidation process gives them a dark or black colour, due to which they can sometimes be mistaken for blackheads.

It's important to note that sebaceous filaments are generally harmless and do not require treatment. However, some people may be bothered by their appearance and may attempt to remove or reduce their visibility. It's essential to approach any extraction or treatment carefully to avoid damaging the skin or causing inflammation. Consulting with a dermatologist or skincare professional is recommended for personalised advice and guidance.

While sebaceous filaments are a natural part of the skin and do not necessarily require treatment, some individuals may wish to minimise their appearance. Here are some dermatologist-approved tips that can you reduce the visibility of sebaceous filaments:

Gentle cleansing

Chemical exfoliation

Clay masks

Professional treatments

Gentle cleansing

Regularly cleanse your face with a mild, non-comedogenic cleanser to remove excess oil and impurities. Using micellar water for cleansing is advised as it works like a magnet for grime.

Chemical exfoliation

Chemical exfoliants containing ingredients such as salicylic acid, glycolic acid, or lactic acid can be used to gently exfoliate the skin and unclog pores, including those containing sebaceous filaments. These products work by dissolving the dead skin cells and oil that contribute to their appearance. Start with a low concentration and gradually increase if needed. It's advisable to consult a dermatologist before incorporating chemical exfoliants into your skincare routine.

Clay masks

Applying a clay mask once or twice a week can help draw out impurities, absorb excess oil, and temporarily reduce the visibility of sebaceous filaments. Look for clay masks containing ingredients like kaolin, bentonite, or charcoal.

Professional treatments

Certain professional treatments performed by dermatologists or estheticians can provide more intensive and immediate results. These may include professional extractions, chemical peels, microdermabrasion, or laser treatments. It's important to consult a skin care professional to determine which treatment, if any, is suitable for you.

Always remember that it's crucial to be gentle with your skin and avoid aggressive squeezing or picking at the sebaceous filaments, as it can lead to inflammation, scarring, or infection. Additionally, maintaining a consistent skincare routine and practising good overall skin hygiene can help keep sebaceous filaments in check.

Prince Harry and his wife Meghan Markle were trailed in their car by the paparazzi in New York as they left a charity event on Tuesday night where Meghan was honoured for her work. The couple and Meghan's mother took a brief refuge at a police station before being whisked away in a yellow cab, which an Indian-origin man was incidentally driving.
The pursuit and media frenzy on Tuesday brought back horrific memories of the 1997 car chase through Paris that killed Harry’s mother, Princess Diana. On Tuesday though, no one was hurt.
The incident was reported by their spokesperson on Wednesday, revealing that the couple were involved in a "near catastrophic car chase," through the streets of Manhattan.
That account led New York City Mayor Eric Adams to condemn the paparazzi chasing them as “reckless and irresponsible.”
Prince Harry, wife Meghan in ‘near catastrophic car chase’ with paparazzi: Reports

Prince Harry reportedly suffered "huge bouts of depression and paranoia" due to press intrusion in his life. Harry is suing Mirror Newspaper Group(MGN) over alleged unlawful information gathering by journalists.

During a court proceeding, Harry's attorney said that his ex-girlfriend Chelsy Davy decided "a royal life was not for her" as a result of the alleged activities of MGN journalists.

Prince Harry's lawyer- David Sherborne- said, “He became immediately suspicious of anyone named in stories about him and felt that he could not trust anybody, even at such a young age. It also caused great challenges in his relationship with his ex-girlfriend Chelsy Davy, and made him fear for his and her safety.”

“Every time he was in a relationship, or even a rumoured relationship, that whole person’s family, and often their friends, would be 'dragged into the chaos' and find themselves the subject of unlawful activity on the part of MGN. There was nowhere that was 'off limits' for MGN’s newspapers, whose journalists would even manage to book into a hotel in Bazaruto, a small island off the coast of Mozambique, when the Duke of Sussex and Ms Davy tried to escape there and enjoy some peace and quiet,” the court was told.

“They were never on their own, which ‘placed a huge amount of unnecessary stress and strain’ on their relationship," the attorney further added. Harry stated that MGN’s activities led Davy to make the decision that ‘a royal life was not for her’, which led to Harry suffering from depression.

"They also caused their circle of friends to become smaller and smaller, meaning that friendships were lost entirely unnecessarily, and led to ‘huge bouts of depression and paranoia’,” the court heard.

A recent study carried out by Danish researchers has revealed that a blood test taken after a miscarriage, as early as week five of pregnancy, can provide insights into why the miscarriage occurred and potentially lead to preventive treatments, according to news agency AFP. Miscarriages affect one in ten women, and this number is even higher in countries where pregnancies are increasingly delayed until later in a woman's childbearing years. The research, led by Danish gynaecologist Henriette Svarre Nielsen and her team, was published in the prestigious British journal The Lancet. The study demonstrates that a blood sample taken from the mother soon after a miscarriage, even as early as the fifth week of pregnancy, can determine whether the foetus had a chromosome anomaly.

In Denmark, such tests are typically only offered after a woman has experienced three miscarriages, and only if those miscarriages occurred after the tenth week of pregnancy.

Dr Nielsen emphasised the need to move beyond the traditional criteria of counting miscarriages and recognise that in 2023, more comprehensive investigations are necessary to understand why some individuals may be prone to pregnancy loss. As part of an ongoing study called COPL (Copenhagen Pregnancy Loss), all women who have suffered a miscarriage and visited the emergency room at Hvidovre hospital near Copenhagen are now offered the blood test. Remarkably, over 75 per cent of the women have accepted this offer.

The blood samples are immediately sent to the hospital laboratory, where the DNA of the foetus is isolated, sequenced, and analysed to identify any chromosome anomalies. Such anomalies are found in approximately 50 to 60 per cent of miscarriages. By determining the nature and severity of these anomalies, doctors can also predict the risk of future miscarriages. For instance, lab technician Lene Werge demonstrated a DNA sample with extra copies of chromosome 21, which is linked to Down Syndrome. The findings from the blood test guide doctors in launching a meticulous search for answers if no anomalies are found. Hormonal imbalances, endocrine disorders, coagulation problems, or lifestyle factors could be contributing factors to pregnancy loss.

The COPL project, initiated in 2020, is still in progress and is expected to generate a valuable database with information on a wide range of illnesses. The study has already included 1,700 women, and Dr Svarre Nielsen anticipates that this comprehensive data will provide crucial insights not only into pregnancy loss and reproduction but also into women's health in general.

Dr Svarre Nielsen, with over 20 years of experience in reproductive health, is determined to develop effective treatments in response to pregnancy loss. She highlights the prevalence of this issue, as 25 per cent of all pregnancies end in a miscarriage. However, she laments the fact that the focus has predominantly been on emptying the uterus after a loss, with limited efforts dedicated to finding explanations or providing mental health support to couples who have experienced a miscarriage.

Cutting on sugar can be a great challenge for someone trying to lose weight. The change in taste in our usual comfort foods can be tough to handle. Many people opt for artificial sweeteners to try to calm down the taste buds. But now World Health Organisation has clearly said that artificial sweeteners do not provide long-term benefit in reducing body fat in adults or children.

The WHO has released a new guideline in accordance to which artificial sweeteners are not just without benefits but they also increase the risk of type-2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease and even death.

Francesco Branca, Director for Nutrition and Food Safety at WHO said that people need to consider other ways to reduce free sugars intake.

"Replacing free sugars with non-sugar sweeteners (NSS) does not help with weight control in the long term. People need to consider other ways to reduce free sugars intake, such as consuming food with naturally occurring sugars, like fruit, or unsweetened food and beverages,” said Branca.

"NSS are not essential dietary factors and have no nutritional value. People should reduce the sweetness of the diet altogether, starting early in life, to improve their health."

Branca was quoted on the official website of WHO.

Common NSS include aspartame, advantame, sucralose, saccharin, neotame, acesulfame K, cyclamates, stevia and stevia derivatives.

However, WHO noted that its recommendation does not apply to personal care and hygiene product that contain non-sugar sweeteners (NSS). This means that NSS in products like skin cream, toothpaste, medications or low-calorie sugars and sugar alcohols (polyols) do not pose the threat WHO has warned about.

"Because the link observed in the evidence between NSS and disease outcomes might be confounded by baseline characteristics of study participants and complicated patterns of NSS use, the recommendation has been assessed as conditional, following WHO processes for developing guidelines. This signals that policy decisions based on this recommendation may require substantive discussion in specific country contexts, linked for example to the extent of consumption in different age groups," says WHO on its website.

“This new guideline is based on a thorough assessment of the latest scientific literature, and it emphasises that the use of artificial sweeteners is not a good strategy for achieving weight loss by reducing dietary energy intake,” said nutrition researcher Ian Johnson, emeritus fellow at Quadram Institute Bioscience. He was quoted by CNN.

Swiss Beauty ropes in Taapsee Pannu as brand ambassador

In today's fast-paced and demanding world, mental health has become a topic of great importance. The challenges of everyday life can take a toll on our well-being, affecting both our mental and physical health. One area where this connection is often overlooked is the impact of mental health on skin health. While it may seem surprising, there is a strong correlation between our mental state and the health of our skin.

Skin is the body's largest organ, and it serves as a protective barrier between our internal systems and the external environment. It is also highly sensitive to emotional and psychological stress. When we experience stress, anxiety, or depression, our body releases stress hormones such as cortisol, which can have a profound impact on our skin.

One common manifestation of mental health issues on the skin is the emergence of various skin conditions. Acne, eczema, psoriasis, and rosacea are just a few examples of skin conditions that can be triggered or exacerbated by stress and emotional turmoil. The skin may become more sensitive, reactive, and prone to inflammation when our mental health is compromised. This is due to the intricate connection between our brain, immune system, and skin health.

"When we address mental health and take steps to improve our emotional well-being, the positive effects often extend to our skin. Boosting confidence and self-esteem through self-care, therapy, and healthy coping mechanisms can lead to healthier-looking skin," says Dr Nivedita Dadu, renowned dermatologist and Dadu Medical Centre's founder and chairman.

Let's explore some of the ways in which addressing mental health can enhance both our confidence and our skin health!

1. Stress Reduction: Stress is a common trigger for many skin issues. By managing stress levels, we can reduce the likelihood of flare-ups and minimise the severity of existing skin conditions. Engaging in relaxation techniques such as meditation, deep breathing exercises, or engaging in activities we enjoy can significantly reduce stress and promote a healthier complexion.

2. Healthy Lifestyle: When we prioritise our mental health, we are more likely to adopt a healthy lifestyle. Regular exercise, a balanced diet, and adequate sleep all contribute to improved mental well-being and overall skin health. Exercise increases blood flow to the skin, promoting a healthy glow, while a nutritious diet rich in antioxidants can provide the necessary nutrients for skin repair and rejuvenation.

3. Skincare Routine: Taking care of our skin is an essential part of self-care, and it can significantly boost our confidence. Establishing a skincare routine tailored to our skin type and concerns allows us to dedicate time each day to pamper ourselves. This act of self-care can be calming and promote a sense of self-worth. Using gentle, non-irritating products can also help soothe sensitive skin often associated with mental health conditions.

4. Seeking Professional Help: Mental health challenges should never be faced alone. Seeking professional help, such as therapy or counselling, can provide invaluable support. A mental health professional can help us develop coping strategies, manage stress, and improve our overall well-being. In turn, this can positively impact our skin health by reducing inflammation and allowing the skin to heal more effectively.

5. Building Support Networks: Isolation and loneliness can exacerbate mental health issues. By building strong support networks, we create a sense of belonging and connection. Sharing our experiences, seeking guidance, or simply having someone to talk to can alleviate stress and promote a healthier state of mind, which can reflect positively on our skin.

6. Embracing Self-acceptance: Mental health struggles often bring about negative self-perception and low self-esteem. By practising self-acceptance and embracing our unique qualities, we can cultivate a more positive self-image. This newfound confidence can radiate from within, positively impacting our skin's appearance and overall health.

7. Mindfulness and Self-awareness: Practicing mindfulness involves being present in the moment and cultivating self-awareness. By paying attention to our thoughts, feelings, and bodily sensations, we can better understand the triggers that affect our mental health and skin condition. This self-awareness allows us to identify and manage stressors effectively, reducing their impact on our skin.

8. Expressive Outlets: Engaging in creative or expressive outlets can be therapeutic and cathartic. Activities such as painting, writing, dancing, or playing a musical instrument provide an avenue for emotional release and self-expression. These outlets can help alleviate stress and promote mental well-being, leading to healthier skin.

9. Setting Boundaries: Taking care of our mental health requires setting healthy boundaries in various aspects of our lives. This includes establishing boundaries in relationships, work-life balance, and social media consumption. By creating boundaries that protect our mental well-being, we can reduce stress and create space for self-care, ultimately benefiting our skin health.

10. Building Resilience: Mental health challenges can be overwhelming, but building resilience is key to navigating through them. Resilience allows us to bounce back from setbacks, adapt to change, and maintain a positive outlook. By developing resilience, we can better cope with stressors that may impact our mental health and, consequently, our skin.

"Promoting mental health awareness and education helps reduce the stigma surrounding mental health struggles. By sharing our experiences, knowledge, and resources with others, we contribute to a more supportive and understanding society. This creates an environment where individuals feel safe seeking help and taking steps toward improving their mental well-being and skin health," says Dr Nivedita.

PEN America to honour imprisoned Iranian activist Narges Mohammadi with Freedom to Write Award

Over the last few years, there has been a huge rise in the number of cafes that have come up across India. From new coffee chains to chai-cafes, there is a café to accommodate all tastes and price points. Even existing industry biggies like Starbucks, Café Coffee Day and Costa have expanded their presence in the country by opening new stores in main metros as well as tier 2 and tier 3 cities. But a lot of this owes itself to a shift in the way Indians view the café. It is no longer just a place to chill at with friends or enjoy a solo treat. Thanks to many companies offering remote-working roles post-pandemic, a lot of professionals are spending their full working day in a café over coffee and food.

Even though they have the option of working from home, many prefer to be elsewhere due to space issues at home, noisy children and simply put- a change of scene. All they need is a good WiFi connection and a pleasant ambience, which cafés are happy to provide.

“We noticed a huge rise in the number of people that were using our cafes as workspaces and also having their professional work meetings there. This led us to actually open a conference room in some of our cafes across the country that customers can rent by the hour for team meetings. The response has been great,” says Shabri Prabhakar, President- Marketing, Café Coffee Day Global.

One could also argue that co-working spaces also make a great remote-working option, but many professionals find the casual atmosphere of a café, along with great f&b options, more appealing.

“I work as an independent fashion designer and I can actually bring my samples to a café in a central location and have meetings with different clients over a good cup of coffee and a snack. It also helps break the ice better,” mentions Ashna Bhatia, a designer based in Bengaluru.

For café chains, this means tight competition as customers are now spoilt for choice. Good coffee, tea and a range of cakes, bakes and snacks are available across the café-scape. The real challenge lies in retaining customers who want a place by the window with their laptop and no pressure to vacate whether they order a single latte (or six) in one session.
Also read: World's oldest dog Bobi celebrates his 31st birthday One could also argue that co-working spaces also make a great remote-working option, but many professionals find the casual atmosphere of a café, along with great f&b options, more appealing. 'Work From Café': The new remote-working norm

Mothers and fathers who talk to their newborns or toddlers, unknowingly help boost their brain development, research conducted by the University of East Anglia has found. Yes, you read that right! The simple act of speaking to your little munchkin helps shape their developing brain.

Researchers from the UEA studied thousands of hours of language data of babies and toddlers wearing small recording devices while carrying out MRI scans to study the structure of their developing brains. During the research, they found that two-and-a-half-year-olds, who listened to more speech in everyday life, had more myelin in language-related areas of their brains, which researchers said is "likely to support more sophisticated language processing".

Myelin is a material that forms around nerves and allows electrical impulses to transmit quickly and efficiently.

The study involved 163 babies and toddlers and demonstrated how speaking to your little ones can help develop their brains. Their findings were first published in the Journal of Neuroscience.

"We know that children’s brains develop very rapidly in the first two years of life, with brain volume at about 80 per cent that of an adult brain by the age of two," lead researcher Prof John Spencer from UEA's School of Psychology shared. "Myelin is made up of protein and fatty substances and forms an insulating layer around nerves in the brain."

Explaining what exactly is Myelin and how it helps with brain development, Spencer said, "Imagine you have a hosepipe with lots of holes in it. Myelin is like wrapping the hosepipe with duct tape - it insulates neural fibres, bringing more of the 'signal' from one brain area to the next."

The UEA study is one of the first to show that listening to speech is closely linked with early brain development. Spencer added, "Prior work showed a similar association in four to six-year-olds, but our findings push this association much earlier in development. Indeed, we even found associations between language input and brain structure in six-month-old infants."

"Although there is still much more to learn about these processes, the message to caregivers is clear – talk to your baby, your toddler, your child. Not only are they listening, but your language input is literally shaping their brains," the researcher concluded.

Speaking to babies, toddlers may help boost their brain development, says new research

Bobi, a purebred Rafeiro do Alentejo who was declared the world’s oldest dog in February 2023 by the Guinness Book of World Records, recently celebrated his 31st birthday. On Saturday, a grand traditional Portuguese party was thrown by his owner Leonel Costa at his home in the Portuguese village of Conqueiros, where he has lived his entire life. More than 100 people attended the party.

According to reports, local meats and fish were served to the guests. Bobi, who only eats human food, got a special plate. A dance troupe also performed at the party and Bobi participated in one of their routines.

Costa, who has owned several old-aged dogs in the past including Bobi's mother Gira, said he never imagined any of his dogs would reach their 30s.

“We see situations like this as a normal result of the life that they have, but Bobi is one of a kind,” Costa said.

The pet parent added that the biggest contributing factor to Bobi’s longevity is the "calm, peaceful environment" he gets at home. Throughout his life, Bobi has freely roamed the forests surrounding the house and has never been chained or leashed, said Costa.

The global need for mental health awareness remains a challenge even in 2023. Mental health issues and psychological disorders are rising worldwide and places a major burden on society. A new survey conducted by market research firm IPSOS is bringing the topic into sharp focus.

About 1 in every 2 corporate employees is at a high risk of poor mental health, according to a survey conducted by Mpower, an initiative by The Aditya Birla Education Trust, in collaboration with IPSOS. The poll covered 3,000 corporate employees from eight Indian cities and 10 sectors, including e-commerce, FMCG and hospitality.

The survey also showed that nearly eight in 10 employees have skipped work for at least two weeks in the past year due to mental fatigue and nine out of 10 employees feel they lack a work-life balance. It also found that female employees are more prone to mental health issues than men, with 56 per cent of women being at risk as compared to just 41 per cent of men. One of the major reasons identified for this is that female employees feel they face more gender bias and stereotyping.

1 in every 2 Indian corporate employees at high risk for poor mental health: Survey

Childhood trauma can have significant and lasting effects on an individual's mental health and well-being throughout their lives into adulthood. From a psychological perspective, traumatic experiences during childhood can lead to the development of various mental health disorders, including anxiety, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and personality disorders.

Childhood trauma can come in many forms, including physical, sexual, and emotional abuse, neglect, and witnessing violence. These experiences can cause a child to feel powerless, helpless, and overwhelmed, leading to feelings of anxiety and depression.

One of the most common effects of childhood trauma is the development of PTSD. This disorder can cause an individual to experience flashbacks, nightmares, and intrusive thoughts related to the traumatic event. It can also cause hyper-arousal, making it difficult for individuals to relax or feel safe in certain situations.

Another way childhood trauma can affect individuals is by altering their overall brain chemistry. Traumatic experiences can lead to changes in the brain's structure and function, affecting the development of critical areas such as the hippocampus and amygdala. These changes can lead to difficulties in regulating emotions, making it harder for individuals to cope with stress and anxiety.

Childhood trauma can also lead to the development of various personality disorders; a common example could be borderline personality disorder (BPD). These disorders can cause individuals to experience difficulty regulating emotions and forming healthy relationships with others. Individuals who have experienced childhood trauma may also struggle with certain types of addiction, as they may turn to substances or behaviours as a way to cope with their traumatic experiences.

Examples of the impact of childhood trauma can be seen in various aspects of an individual's life. For instance, an individual who experienced neglect as a child may struggle with feelings of abandonment and develop a fear of rejection, making it challenging to form and maintain healthy relationships. Additionally, an individual who experienced sexual abuse may struggle with intimacy and may have difficulty trusting others.

Childhood trauma can have long-lasting effects on an individual's mental health and well-being in adulthood. By understanding these effects, individuals can seek appropriate treatment and support to help them cope with their traumatic experiences and improve their quality of life.

Psychologist reveals how childhood trauma can affect you in adulthood | Mental Health Awareness Month 2023

As young children, we are often praised for our appearance and cute outfits. But as we grow older, we become increasingly aware of societal expectations around beauty and body image. Children’s opinions of their bodies form at a very young age and continue to be shaped throughout adolescence and into adulthood.

Research suggests that children as young as 3 years old can have body image issues. While parents generally see early childhood as a time of innocence, where children are not yet preoccupied with their physical appearance or self-awareness, it's important to recognise that family socialisation during this period can have an impact on certain aspects of a child's body-related self-concept. Factors such as healthy sexuality, body confidence, body acceptance, and even early indicators of body size preferences can be shaped by familial influences that may start as early as preschool.

The messages that children receive from their environment - from family members, peers, media, and other sources – also can have a significant impact on their body image. For example, if a child is constantly told that they need to lose weight or look a certain way to be accepted, they may internalise these messages and develop negative beliefs about their body.

From unrealistic beauty standards in media to peer pressure to conform to a certain appearance, the concepts of body dissatisfaction are becoming more prevalent among children and teenagers. Research has shown that negative body image can have a range of negative effects on mental health, including depression, anxiety, and eating disorders.

One research revealed that 70 per cent of its female respondents felt pressure to conform to an idealised image of beauty. Another study published in the journal Paediatrics found that exposure to thin-ideal media was associated with increased body dissatisfaction among adolescent girls. Another study in the Journal of Adolescent Health found that girls who reported being teased about their weight in childhood were more likely to have body dissatisfaction and engage in unhealthy weight-control behaviours as teenagers. Another study published in the International Journal of Eating Disorders found that girls who were told to lose weight by their parents had a higher risk of developing eating disorders.

Steps to promote healthy body image among young people, therefore, are the need of the hour. Studies suggest that parents, teachers, and other adults can play a key role in shaping children's beliefs about their bodies. One approach is to focus on health and wellness rather than appearance. For example, rather than emphasising the need to be thin, parents can encourage children to be physically active and eat a balanced diet. Additionally, promoting positive self-talk and body acceptance can help children develop healthy relationship with their bodies.
