Iconic couturier Viacheslav "Slava" Zaitsev has died at the age of 85, multiple&nbsp;Russian media outlets reported on Sunday, citing sources.&nbsp;The fashion designer was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease in 2016 and had been partially paralysed for the past few years. He reportedly died while hospitalised, succumbing to internal bleeding.

A spokeswoman from his fashion house in Moscow confirmed the news to AFP and&nbsp;added that when Zaitsev celebrated his 85th birthday in March with his friends, she&nbsp;"could already see that the designer was very, very, weak".&nbsp;

Known by his admirers as the "Red Dior", Zaitsev dictated Soviet and Russian fashion for decades. He was an innovator like no other and wasn't afraid of bold experiments.&nbsp;

The designer's journey started in a factory in Moscow. After graduating from the Moscow Textile Institute in 1962, he found a job at a factory that made women's clothes.

Russian couturier Vyacheslav 'Slava' Zaitsev, aka Red Dior, dies aged 85

It’s the first Monday in May: Welcome to Met Gala mania.

With a live stream available when the evening gets underway, the world’s most fashionable fundraiser takes on one of the world’s most prolific — and controversial — designers, the late Karl Lagerfeld, as the starry party’s theme.

So how would the man of the hour, who died in 2019, feel about all the hullabaloo? Lagerfeld was a student of history, to be sure, but his eyes were forever on the future.

“Karl never wanted to have a retrospective when he was alive. He felt that it was funereal. He made the point that (Cristóbal) Balenciaga and (Coco) Chanel never had them when they were alive,” said William Middleton, who wrote the biography “Paradise Now: The Extraordinary Life of Karl Lagerfeld.”

So what about now?

“He believed very much in fashion history, so he’s a part of fashion history now. I don’t think he would have had a problem with it,” Middleton surmised.

Others aren’t so sure.

Caroline Lebar worked with Lagerfeld for 35 years, rising to senior vice president of image and communications for his eponymous brand. Lagerfeld loved the Met, but he always said: “‘I’m not an artist, I’m a fashion maker,’” Lebar said on the company’s site.

“He didn’t think his work belonged in a museum. Anna Wintour also mentioned this when she made the announcement about the theme,” Lebar explained.

The invitation-only gala earned $17.4 million last year for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute, a self-funding department with a budget dependent on the A-list affair. The price of attending went up this year to $300,000 for a table and $50,000 for a single ticket.

Companies and brands buy tables and host many of the roughly 400 guests expected this year from fashion, film, music, theatre, sports, tech and social media. They were asked to dress “in honour of Karl” by gala mastermind Wintour, a close Lagerfeld friend who first signed on to the event in 1995 and took over the helm in 1999.

Fashion publicist Eleanor Lambert thought up the Met Gala back in 1948 as a fundraiser for the newly founded Costume Institute. It was a dinner held elsewhere. The idea is to celebrate the opening of the institute’s big exhibition each year, this time called “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty.”

American fashion was last year’s vibe. It followed gilded glamour and white tie. Camp was the theme in 2019, producing what is considered one of the wackiest displays of dresses by the celebrity crowd.

Katy Perry wore a chandelier, then slipped into a hamburger outfit. Lady Gaga did a four-layer strip tease on the Met’s Grand Staircase and Jared Leto carried a stage version of his own head.

Dressing to the Lagerfeld theme could be a breeze for guests with stylists able to source the best vintage pieces from the fashion houses where he worked: Chanel, Fendi, Chloé, Jean Patou, Balmain, his own brand and more.

This year’s five hosts include Wintour, as usual, along with Michaela Coel, longtime Chanel ambassador Penélope Cruz, recently retired tennis superstar Roger Federer and Dua Lipa.

Losing weight is one thing but our high-sounding diet plans are actually good for our health but are they good for our heart? An expert panel at the American Heart Association ranked the top 10 diets in the United States highlighting their impact on Cardiovascular health.

Top 10 US diets come under American Heart Association's scanner

About 697,000 people in the United States died from heart disease in 2020, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, National Center for Health Statistics. Data from other countries don't paint a pretty picture either. World Health Organization says that it is the leading killer of men and women worldwide. And now, American Heart Association has issued a call to action via its flagship journal.

A 10-member expert panel published a scientific statement on Thursday and highlighted four cardiac diets that best meet AHA's evidence-based dietary guidelines for heart health, published in Circulation in 2021.

DASH (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension) diet received a perfect score of 100 from AHA. The diet includes whole grains, legumes, nuts, vegetables, fruits, seeds and low-fat milk products. You can also eat lean meat, poultry meat, fish and non-tropical oils in this diet. And, you must remember to limit your intake of&nbsp;saturated fats, salt, refined grains, fatty meats, added sugar and alcohol.

Next, we have the pescatarian diet, which is 92 per cent aligned with AHA goals. It allows dairy, eggs, fish and other seafood but no meat or poultry.

The third spot was given to the Mediterranean diet, which is 89 per cent&nbsp;aligned with the AHA dietary recommendations. The popular, award-winning diet scored less mostly because it&nbsp;doesn't&nbsp;limit salt and recommends a small glass of red wine each day, says lead author Christopher Gardner, a research professor of medicine at the Stanford Prevention Research Center in California who directs its Nutrition Studies Research Group.

The lacto-ovo-vegetarian diet, which allows dairy and eggs, and variations that include one or the other, were 86 per cent&nbsp;aligned with AHA guidelines.&nbsp;You must avoid meat, poultry meat, fish and seafood during this diet and limit the usage of refined grains, solid fats and alcohol.

Meghan Markle's recent interview with Oprah Winfrey has not gone down well with several members of her family. Her half-brother Thomas Markle Jr has now publicly criticised the Duchess of Sussex for claiming that she grew up as an only child. The statement has drawn criticism from Meghan's half-sister Samantha as well.&nbsp;

In a joint interview with their father, Thomas Sr., for 7NEWS Spotlight, Thomas Jr. claimed that the statement was "another lie". A few days earlier, Samantha had reacted to the interview and claimed that Meghan's estrangement from her family was due to her belief that they were not "good enough" for the royal family.

Samantha further claimed that Meghan had lied to the royal family and Prince Harry, her husband, about her family, saying that it "wouldn't have jived with the truth."

Meghan has had a strained relationship with her father, half-siblings and extended family ever since she married Prince Harry in 2018. Her father, Thomas Sr., reportedly staged a set of paparazzi photos, which led to an estrangement between the two.

Samantha had even filed a defamation lawsuit against Meghan for making false and malicious statements against the family while speaking to Oprah. However, Meghan's legal team had argued that it was impossible to prove whether someone was lying about expressing their feelings about their childhood. The team also stated that her statement about growing up as an only child was a 'subjective statement' and more about how she felt about her childhood. Meghan has had a good relationship with her mother, Doria Ragland.

Meghan Markle's siblings claim the Duchess doesn't think they are 'good enough' for the royal family

Prince William will be honouring his father King Charles III, during his coronation on Saturday. William is also the heir to the throne and on Saturday's ceremony, he will vow his loyalty and allegiance to the king during ceremony.

According to the liturgy of the service, about halfway through the historic ceremony, William will kneel before his father, place his hands between his and recite: "I, William, Prince of Wales, pledge my loyalty to you and faith and truth I will bear unto you, as your liege man of life and limb. So help me God."

The Prince of Wales is the only member of the royal family who will honour the King in this manner during the service. He also appears as the Stole Royal as the Robe Royal is presented to the king. William will assist both Baroness Merron and the bishops in placing the robe on Charles.&nbsp;

A similar vow, known as the Homage of Royal Blood, was taken by William's late grandfather Prince Philip during Queen Elizabeth's coronation. Phillip pledged to "liege man of life and limb" to the late queen in 1953.

As per the liturgy, there is a change in tradition when it comes to the Homage of the People. In the past, that role was performed by hereditary dukes and earls at Westminster Abbey during the coronation.

This year, Charles and Archbishop, the Most Rev. and Right Honorable Justin Welby have invited the public to participate in the homage.

The Central Beacons Mountain Rescue team was in for a special surprise as they recently had Prince William and Princess Kate delivering them 22 pizza pies. The Prince and Princess of Wales hand-delivered the pizza boxes at the Dowlais Rugby Club, where they mingled with volunteers after spending the morning participating in the team's training exercises.

The royal couple were dressed casually. Usually seen in formal dresses and heels, Kate chose a &nbsp;casual attire by wearing pair of black skinny cargo pants, a forest-green turtleneck sweater, an olive collared zip-up jacket, and dark brown hiking boots. Her husband, William's outfit was similarly pared down; the royal wore a light blue collared button-up, a black puffer jacket, gray trousers, and brown boots.

While waiting for the pizza at a nearby food truck, the couple was photographed in the midst of a rare display of PDA as Kate holded her hand up to William's back.

Whenever we look for home remedies for Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs) on the internet, cranberries pop up on our screens. That makes us wonder - are they any good to treat the painful condition most women experience at least once in their lifetime? That's 50 to 60 per cent of women to be exact, according to a study titled Recurrent Urinary Tract Infections Management in Women published in the National Library of Medicine journal.

To answer the cranberry question, researchers reviewed 50 previous trials covering 8,857 participants. And, they found out that "drinking cranberries as a juice or taking capsules reduces&nbsp;the number of UTIs in women with recurrent cases, in children and in people susceptible to UTIs following medical interventions such as bladder radiotherapy".

The study says that the risk of developing a UTI reduces by more than a quarter in women with recurrent cases of infection, by over a half in children, and by just over a half for people likely to get UTIs after medical procedures.

"The studies we looked at included a range of methods to determine the benefits of cranberry products," says epidemiologist Jacqueline Stephens from Flinders University in Australia.

"The vast majority compared cranberry products with a placebo or no treatment for UTI and determined drinking cranberries as a juice or taking capsules reduced the number of UTIs in women with recurrent cases, in children and in people susceptible to UTIs following medical interventions such as bladder radiotherapy."

Cranberries have been used by Native Americans for many years&nbsp;to treat bladder and kidney ailments. Therapeutic applications of the berry&nbsp;date back to the 17th century, as an effective remedy for blood disorders, stomach ailments, nausea, liver problems,&nbsp;and in some cases, even cancer. Before the discovery of antibiotics like Norflox 400, cranberry was considered a popular treatment for UTIs. However, scientific evidence to back this traditional remedy is still limited.

Speaking to WION, Dr Aabha Bhalerao, consultant gynaecologist at Ruby Hall Clinic, stated, "Urinary tract infection is the most common infection that affects us women, ranging from mild burning urination to cystitis with high-grade fever. Recurrent UTI is more than 2 episodes of infection in the past 12 months. Along with antibiotics, cranberry helps is reducing symptoms of UTI since it contains a substance that can prevent bacteria from invading urinary tract mucosa. It may help in preventing recurrent infections and limiting mild infections too."

Can cranberries cure Urinary Tract Infections? 'Yes', says new study

Warts are unpleasant and unattractive bumps on the skin, which typically look like little blister-like growths on a person's hands or feet. It might also manifest in other areas of the body. The human papillomavirus (HPV), which is what causes it, is an infection. More than 15,000 viruses make up the HPV virus category. Actually an STD/STI, HPV is a sexually transmitted infection or disease. Anyone who engages in sexual activity has the risk of contracting HPV if their partner has the virus. Skin-to-skin contact is how it is spread. Warts can appear on different body parts or on the genital areas of those who have HPV.

Dr Karuna Malhotra, Cosmetologist and Aesthetic Physician from Cosmetic Skin Clinic, Rajouri Garden, Delhi explains that "the distinctions between warts, moles, and skin tags are often unclear. Despite the fact that each of the three of them is unique in nature and arises for distinct reasons. Warts are typically little blisters or skin lesions that are the same colour as the person's skin."

How is it transmitted?

Apart from HPV which is a sexually transmitted infection warts are also spread through skin contact by shaking hands, turning door knobs or typing on keyboards used by many; sharing common shoes or towels also causes warts. Yes, people do get warts from other people with warts; they don't get them from anywhere else. If you have any type of skin wart, it means that you came in contact with a wart-causing virus sometime in the past, though it could have been months ago.

Who are at risk?

Any person who has very sensitive or damaged or wet skin is more prone to catch the infection. Apart from this person being sexually active, having a weak immune system, under prolonged stress, having hormonal disorders and being exposed to external effects such as radiation, chemical emissions of industrial cities, and oily or junk food is at risk to get warts once in a lifetime. Also, the wart virus is transmitted most rapidly in areas having warm and humid air like spas, saunas, swimming pools, gyms or clubs.

Precautions

<ul>
	<li>The first and foremost way to prevent skin warts is to avoid coming into contact with the virus.</li>
	<li>Make sure you wash your hands properly each time before you touch anything.</li>
	<li>Do not share your shoes or towels with anybody. Also, do not use anybody else's towels or shoes.</li>
	<li>Keep your skin healthy and well moisturised in all seasons be it winter or summer; do not keep your skin dry for long.</li>
	<li>Do not bite your fingernails; also while shaving make sure that you use a sharp razor that won't tear or cut your skin.</li>
</ul>

Treatment for warts

Some warts need not be medically treated; they may go on their own. If your warts cause bleeding or pain then do see a good dermatologist. Options for removing warts are:

<ul>
	<li>Chemical treatment where warts are removed with acids, alkalis or medications containing salicylic acid which works by removing layers of the wart a little bit at a time.</li>
	<li>But nowadays Laser wart removal is unique and quite an effective method of getting rid of warts very fast and is less painful as it leaves almost no scars, the doctor can easily control the intensity of exposure, recovery from the procedure is fast but do go to a certified doctor for the removal.</li>
</ul>

What causes warts and how to get rid of them?

So much has changed in just two decades! We've made a quick yet smooth&nbsp;transition from photo albums or photo books&nbsp;to photo galleries in our iPhones. Now, 21st-century parents don't wait for special occasions to hire a photographer and get albums made of some 50 to 60 pictures. Instead, they just take their smartphones out of their pockets, click a few selfies, and directly upload them to social networking sites that have millions, if not billions, of users.

In recent days, we've seen so many viral sensations, especially kids, breaking the internet with their adorable videos and photos. "Sharenting", which refers to parents regularly sharing photos and videos of kids online for likes and shares,&nbsp;is quickly gaining popularity among the masses.&nbsp;But, let's be clear, when it comes to sharing content involving children on social media, especially via sponsored posts and brand deals, what is legal is not always ethical. And, since some US states are starting to regulate the child influencer industry, it could soon become illegal.&nbsp;

<h2>Where does the problem lie?</h2>

There're two major concerns when it comes to oversharing information about kids online - first, the privacy concern and second, child labour laws currently do not extend to child influencers.&nbsp;The industry is pretty much unregulated so these young stars have a higher chance of getting&nbsp;exploited.&nbsp;Let's take a deeper dive into it!&nbsp;

<h2>Privacy concern</h2>

Did you know most newborns today have a digital footprint even before they get their first milk tooth? Some kids even have a social media account before they're born. Parents go from sharing photos of their kid's first ultrasound to their first potty training session and a lot more on family vlogs. And, all of this is without the kids' consent, because parents make all the decisions for them till they turn 18 or become adults. Slowly and steadily, &nbsp;parents fall into the trap of "sharenting" that comes with risks attached.

Also read:&nbsp;<a href="https://www.wionews.com/entertainment/lifestyle/news-explained-what-is-activity-snacking-and-how-can-it-help-with-type-1-diabetes-585688">Explained: What is 'activity snacking' and how can it help with type 1 diabetes?</a>

Once you post something online, it can be incredibly difficult to delete it since multiple shares could send a picture or a video of your child halfway around the world. It will end up in photo archives of people you don't even know, and once it's on someone else's hard disk, you'll never be able to remove it. And, the dark web is notorious for child pornography that has hundreds of stolen images from these social networking sites. If parents share&nbsp;full names, date of birth&nbsp;and place of birth of their kids&nbsp;alongside photos, fraudsters can steal their identities and commit crimes.

And, then there's the question of consent. How many of us would like our most embarrassing childhood memories to be circulating on social media? In times when people use filters to boost their egos, is it ethical for parents to present their kids' most private moments to the world on a platter?&nbsp;

<h2>Child labour laws for young influencers</h2>

Traditional child actors are protected by child labour laws in the United States and a few other countries, however, there's nothing on the books for young influencers.&nbsp;As a result, they are at a high&nbsp;risk of financial, physical, and psychological exploitation. In simple words, these toddlers cannot decide how long they work and there is no regulation too, they don't have a right to the money earned through brand deals and sponsorships,&nbsp;and they don't get to decide with whom they want to work. So, a simple question arises: when child influencers are a large part of social media's advertising success and they earn millions each year, with the most successful of them earning upwards of $29 million, why isn't the industry regulated?&nbsp;

These concerns aren't just a theory of what could happen - it's already happening and is being reported.

In 2017, Heather and Michael Martin, who ran a YouTube account called "FamilyOFive",&nbsp;were charged and eventually convicted of child neglect and sentenced to five years probation for pulling disturbing pranks on their kids and verbally abusing them for an online audience.

In 2020, more than 17,700 people signed a petition urging child protective services to investigate the parents who run a YouTube channel called "8 Passengers", after viewers began questioning the couple's parenting methods. The channel is now defunct.

In another case from 2020, Myka Stauffer, a YouTube creator, who had documented her adoption journey, gave away her adoptive son after creating a slew of content about his medical problems. Stauffer faced a huge backlash, and people questioned the ethics of such content. Thankfully, several such cases have started catching the attention of lawmakers around the world.

<h2>What is being done and where?</h2>

The practice of parents exploiting their children for a few likes and shares on YouTube or TikTok is finally seeing some real scrutiny in a few places. But, we still have a long way to go!&nbsp;The Washington state legislature held its first hearing in February for House Bill 1627, which aims to ensure that kids who feature&nbsp;heavily online have a right to financial compensation for their work. The proposed bill also empowers child influencers to&nbsp;request the deletion of some or all featured content once they reach the age of majority, which is 18 years in most US states. This bill marks the first attempt to introduce legislation in the US that puts guardrails on the "sharenting" trend.

Similar efforts are gathering momentum in other states of the US. A bill was passed unanimously in the Illinois Senate and is headed to the House of Representatives. The bill ensures that a portion of any revenue generated by a child influencer is set aside in a dedicated trust fund until he/she reaches adulthood.

Meanwhile, an anti-sharenting bill is being debated by lawmakers in France. This proposed law looks to punish influencer parents looking to gain followers and earn money by posting images and videos of their children online.&nbsp;

Taking short breaks and walking for three minutes every half an hour, which is also called "activity snacking", can help people with type 1 diabetes improve their blood sugar levels, new research conducted by Diabetes UK has revealed. Previous research papers suggested that it also helps people with type 2 diabetes reduce their blood sugar levels and risk of&nbsp;complications. Their argument is based on one simple fact: being active can increase the amount of glucose (sugar) used by muscles and can help the body use insulin more effectively.

Before we learn more about activity snacks, let's first understand what Diabetes UK&nbsp;is saying in their new study.

For the first time, Dr Matthew Campbell from the University of Sunderland investigated the impact of breaking up sedentary time on blood sugar levels in people with type 1 diabetes, with funding from Diabetes UK.

In a study of 32 people, Dr Campbell found that taking regular walking breaks resulted in lower average blood sugar levels over a 48-hour period, as compared to uninterrupted sitting. There was a difference of 14 per cent between the two readings.

<img alt="ss" data-entity-type="file" data-entity-uuid="f652187e-3e45-4c6e-83d8-11cc0a30b756" src="//cdn.wionews.com/sites/default/files/inline-images/pexels-linkedin-sales-navigator-3867842.jpg" />

Quoting the results, Dr Campbell said, "These results provide the first piece of evidence that simply breaking up prolonged periods of time sitting with light-intensity activity can increase the amount of time spent with blood sugar levels in the target range. Importantly, this strategy does not seem to increase the risk of potentially dangerous blood glucose lows which are a common occurrence with more traditional types of physical activity and exercise."

"Breaking up prolonged sitting with light-intensity activity is something that people can do irrespective of whether they currently exercise or not. For some people, ‘activity snacking’ could be an important stepping-stone towards more regular physical activity or exercise, whereas, for others, it may be a simple and acceptable intervention to help manage blood glucose levels," he added.

The preliminary analyses also "show that breaking up prolonged sitting time with light-activity breaks may improve blood vessel health and reduce the risk of diabetes-related complications".

Dr Elizabeth Robertson, director of the research, said, "For people with type 1 diabetes, managing blood sugar levels day in and day out is relentless. Being physically active is important in managing the condition, but building exercise into your daily routine can be challenging, and even those who exercise frequently can often spend a lot of time sitting or lying down."

"It’s incredibly encouraging that these findings suggest that making a simple, practical change – such as taking phone calls while walking, or setting a timer to remind you to take breaks – to avoid sitting for long periods could have such a profound effect on blood sugar levels. Breaking up sitting time with short bursts of activity offers a cost-free way to help people with type 1 diabetes manage their blood sugar levels and potentially reduce their risk of future complications. We look forward to further research to understand the long-term benefits of this approach," Dr Robertson added.

<h2>How to make the most of 'activity snacking'</h2>

You don’t require gym memberships or equipment for "activity snacks". You can do it anywhere and everywhere!

By definition, an activity snack is a brief snippet of exercise, which usually lasts a minute or two. It is basically a feasible, well-tolerated, and time-efficient approach to working out.

When you’re sitting on your office desk or on your couch, getting up to exercise can be a tough task. But what if you could "snack"&nbsp;on these workouts to improve your health? Chances are you won't mind sparing a few minutes every other hour to get fit.

Difference between type 1 &amp; 2 diabetes

Diabetes is a lifelong condition that causes a person's blood sugar level to rise. There are two main types: Type 1 and 2.

In type 1 diabetic patients,&nbsp;the body's immune system attacks and destroys the cells that produce insulin while in type 2 patients, the body does not produce enough insulin, or the body's cells do not react to insulin. Type 2 diabetes is far more common than type 1.

Explained: What is 'activity snacking' and how can it help with type 1 diabetes?

People say, "Opposites attract," but a new study has rejected this theory! According to a study published by the American Psychological Association, people often get attracted to those with whom they share a similar interest and such shared interests represent a deeper and more fundamental similarity, called an essence.

"Our attraction to people who share our attributes is aided by the belief that those shared attributes are driven by something deep within us: one’s essence,"&nbsp;said lead author Charles Chu, PhD, an assistant professor at the Boston University Questrom School of Business.

"To put it concretely, we like someone who agrees with us on a political issue, shares our music preferences, or simply laughs at the same thing as us not purely because of those similarities, but because those similarities suggest something more — this person is, in essence, like me, and as such, they share my views of the world at large,"&nbsp;Charles added.

The study's lead author says that this thought process is driven by a type of psychological essentialism, which applies specifically to one's&nbsp;ideas about the self and individual identity. According to him, people "essentialize"&nbsp;many things, right&nbsp;from biological categories such as animal species to social groups such as race and gender.

"To essentialize something is to define it by a set of deeply rooted and unchanging properties, or an essence,"&nbsp;said Charles. "For example, the category of ‘wolf’ is defined by a wolf essence, residing in all wolves, from which stems attributes such as their pointy noses, sharp teeth and fluffy tails as well as their pack nature and aggressiveness. It is unchanging in that a wolf raised by sheep is still a wolf and will eventually develop wolf-like attributes."

Recently, researchers have begun to focus on the category of the self and have found that just as we essentialize other categories, we essentialize the self, according to Charles.

"To essentialize me is to define who I am by a set of entrenched and unchanging properties, and we all, especially in Western societies, do this to some extent. A self-essentialist then would believe that what others can see about us and the way we behave are caused by such an unchanging essence,"&nbsp;Charles said.

To get a better understanding of how self-essentialism drives attraction between individuals, researchers conducted a series of four experiments, originally published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology.

In one experiment, 954 participants were asked their position on one of five randomly assigned social issues (abortion, capital punishment, gun ownership, animal testing, or physician-assisted suicide). Half the participants then read about another individual who agreed with their position, while the other half read about an individual who disagreed with their position. All participants then completed a questionnaire on how much they believed they shared a general view of the world with the fictitious individual, their level of interpersonal attraction to that person and their overall beliefs in self-essentialism.

Researchers found that participants who scored high on self-essentialism were more likely to express an attraction to the fictitious individual who agreed with their position and to report a shared general perception of reality with that individual.

A similar experiment involving 464 participants found the same results for a shared attribute as simple as the participants’ propensity to overestimate or underestimate a number of coloured dots on a series of computer slides. In other words, the belief in an essential self-led people to assume that just a single dimension of similarity was indicative of seeing the entire world in the same way, which led to more attraction.

In another experiment, 423 participants were shown eight pairs of paintings and asked which of each pair they preferred. Based on their responses, participants were identified as either a fan of the Swiss-German artist Paul Klee or the Russian painter Wassily Kandinsky. Half of each fan group was then told that artistic preference was part of their essence; the other half was told it had no connection. All were then exposed to two hypothetical individuals, one of whom had the same artistic preference and one who differed.

Participants who were told that artistic preference was connected to their essence were significantly more likely to express an attraction to a hypothetical person with the same artistic preferences than those who were told artistic preference had nothing to do with their essence.

A final experiment categorized 449 participants as fans of one of the two artists and then presented them with information about whether using one’s own essence was useful or not in perceiving other people. This time, one-third of the participants were told that essentialist thinking could lead to inaccurate impressions of others, one-third were told that essentialist thinking could lead to accurate impressions of others and the final third were given no information.

As expected, researchers found participants who were told that essentialist thinking could lead to accurate impressions of others were more likely to report attraction to and shared reality with hypothetical individuals with similar art preferences.

Charles&nbsp;said he was most surprised to find that something as minimal as a shared preference for an artist would lead people to perceive that another individual would see the world the same way as they do. Self-essentialist thinking, though, could be a mixed blessing, he warned.

"I think any time when we’re making quick judgments or first impressions with very little information, we are likely to be affected by self-essentialist reasoning," said Charles. "People are so much more complex than we often give them credit for, and we should be wary of the unwarranted assumptions we make based on this type of thinking."

Study reveals the science behind why we find certain people attractive

To mark, what would have been Queen Elizabeth II's 97th birthday, a new photograph was unveiled of the late monarch smiling and posing with some of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. The previously unseen photograph was clicked by Princess of Wales, Kate Middleton.&nbsp;

The photograph features Queen Elizabeth along with Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis, along with Mia, Lucas and Lena Tindall, and Savannah and Isla Phillips. At the back, the Queen's grandchildren Lady Louise Mountbatten-Windsor and James, Earl of Wessex - the son and daughter of the now Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh are seen.

Buckingham Palace shared the image on Instagram earlier and captioned it, "Today we remember the incredible life and legacy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, on what would have been her 97th birthday. When Her Majesty was born in April 1926, Princess Elizabeth and her family did not expect that she would one day become Queen. New pic of Queen Elizabeth with great grandkids unveiled on her birth anniversary

Do you have a friend like Shashi Tharoor who leaves you feeling like a linguistic underdog with their vast and obscure vocabulary? Well, don't fret! As World English Language Day approaches on April 23rd, here we have&nbsp;curated a list of funky and eccentric English words that will leave folks around you awestruck.

World English Language Day is celebrated in&nbsp;honour of the birth and "earth" anniversary of the legendary playwright, William Shakespeare, and also celebrates cultural diversity and multilingualism through the use of
English.

Marking the day, here’s a list of the 10 most bizarre English words by Duolingo&nbsp;that will make your friends go "What the what?!" Trust us, they won't see it coming!

Persiflage - It's like taking a sassy, snooty shot at someone, but with a pinch of elegance and sophistication. Perfect for those moments when you want to throw shade, but still want to look good doing it

How to use: The two friends engaged in witty persiflage as they sipped their cocktails at the fancy bar.

Quixotic - When your imagination runs wild and you dream up big, bold plans that may be unrealistic. But hey, it's always good to aim for the stars, even if you end up landing on your face!

How to use: Despite the warnings of his friends, he pursued his quixotic dream of starting a business in a highly competitive industry with little capital and no prior experience.

Solipsistic - It's like being the only one at a party but in your head all the time. You're so sure that your thoughts and existence are the only real things, that you forget to appreciate the people and world around you. It's like living in your own little bubble of reality!

How to use: Her solipsistic worldview made it difficult for her to connect with others and understand their perspectives, as she believed that only her own mind and experiences were real.

Sartorial - All about looking sharp and dressing to impress, just like how Shashi Tharoor rocks his dapper suits

How to use: The celebrity's sartorial choices always made headlines, with fashion critics praising her impeccable taste and bold fashion statements.

Bumfuzzle - It's like that feeling you get when you listen to Shashi Tharoor speak - a delightful sense of confusion and perplexity, where you're not quite sure if you're learning something new or if you're just completely bamboozled by his grandiloquence!

How to use: When the new intern was asked to set up the office printer, he became completely bumfuzzled and had to ask for help.

Codswallop - It's a charmingly British term that means utter nonsense or gibberish. It's the perfect word to use when you want to dismiss someone's ridiculous statement, like when Shashi Tharoor uses an avalanche of complex and obscure words that leave you feeling like you need a dictionary just to understand him!

How to use: The expert dismissed the conspiracy theory as utter codswallop and presented evidence to prove it.

Lethologica - The phenomenon where your brain decides to take a coffee break right when you're about to sound like a genius, leaving you scrambling for the right word

How to use: During the interview, he experienced lethologica and struggled to recall the name of the company where he had previously worked.

Hoi polloi - A fancy way of saying "the common people" or "the masses", which makes it sound like we're all part of some fancy club, even though we're just a bunch of regular people

How to use: The luxury brand was not interested in appealing to the hoi polloi, instead, they marketed their products exclusively to the wealthy elite.

Obfuscate - It’s like putting a bunch of big words together in a sentence that sounds impressive but actually means nothing, and Mr. Shashi Tharoor is the master of this art!

How to use: The politician tried to obfuscate the issue by using convoluted language and avoiding direct answers to the reporter's questions.

Inscrutable - When something is so mysterious that even Sherlock Holmes would be scratching his head, like trying to figure out why Shashi loves using such mammoth words all the time

How to use: The detective found the suspect's motives inscrutable, as he gave no clear indication of guilt or innocence during the interrogation.

Do you have a friend like Shashi Tharoor who leaves you feeling like a linguistic underdog with their vast and obscure vocabulary? Well, don't fret! As World English Language Day approaches on April 23rd, here we have curated a list of funky and eccentric English words that will leave folks around you awestruck. World English Language Day is celebrated in honour of the birth and "earth" anniversary of the legendary playwright, William Shakespeare, and also celebrates cultural diversity and multilingualism through the use of English. Marking the day, here’s a list of the 10 most bizarre English words by Duolingo that will make your friends go "What the what?!" Trust us, they won't see it coming! Persiflage - It's like taking a sassy, snooty shot at someone, but with a pinch of elegance and sophistication. Perfect for those moments when you want to throw shade, but still want to look good doing it How to use: The two friends engaged in witty persiflage as they sipped their cocktails at the fancy bar. Sartorial - All about looking sharp and dressing to impress, just like how Shashi Tharoor rocks his dapper suits How to use: The celebrity's sartorial choices always made headlines, with fashion critics praising her impeccable taste and bold fashion statements. Lethologica - The phenomenon where your brain decides to take a coffee break right when you're about to sound like a genius, leaving you scrambling for the right word How to use: During the interview, he experienced lethologica and struggled to recall the name of the company where he had previously worked. Hoi polloi - A fancy way of saying "the common people" or "the masses", which makes it sound like we're all part of some fancy club, even though we're just a bunch of regular people How to use: The luxury brand was not interested in appealing to the hoi polloi, instead, they marketed their products exclusively to the wealthy elite. Inscrutable - When something is so mysterious that even Sherlock Holmes would be scratching his head, like trying to figure out why Shashi loves using such mammoth words all the time How to use: The detective found the suspect's motives inscrutable, as he gave no clear indication of guilt or innocence during the interrogation. Manage PCOS with these doctor-approved dietary and lifestyle changes: Exclusive

Karl Lagerfeld, the subject of this year’s Met Gala, transformed Chanel from frumpy to modern. He revolutionized the merger of hip-hop culture and high fashion. He dressed and befriended celebrities and transformed once-staid runway shows into masterful, theatrical displays.

He was also a self-proclaimed “big mouth,” publicly sounding off with fatphobia. He spoke against gay men who want to adopt children, migrants, sexual assault survivors, the #MeToo movement and “ugly” people, without apology.

And he left behind the receipts, his own contentious words.

Lagerfeld died in 2019 after dominating the fashion universe into his 80s. Come May 1, his legacy will be on display at the starry fundraising party and its companion exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute. Likely not on display, however, will be his polemical tendencies.

“He offended people right and left, making as much of an art out of the cutting aside as the perfectly cut double-face gown,” New York Times fashion critic Vanessa Friedman wrote soon after Lagerfeld’s death.

“He judged,” Friedman wrote, “and knew he would be judged himself, but he didn’t care. Rather, he embraced it.”

The choice of Lagerfeld for fashion’s biggest night is not without critics, though gala visionary and close friend Anna Wintour is, clearly, not among them. An emailed request for her comment on this side of Lagerfeld went unreturned.

When 400 or so celebrities and elite from fashion, tech, politics, music, social media, film, TV and sports ascend the Met’s Grand Staircase for the gala, Jameela Jamil won’t be there.

The actor and activist was a rare public figure to condemn the theme, taking to Instagram to acknowledge his fashion genius but denounce his “distinctly hateful” remarks, often toward women.

“Why is this who we celebrate when there are so many amazing designers out there who aren’t bigoted white men? What happened to everyone’s principles and ‘advocacy.’ You don’t get to stand for justice in these areas, and then attend the celebration of someone who revelled in his own public disdain for marginalized people,” Jamil wrote.

In 2020, a group of internet friends decided to democratize the A-list, invitation-only gala with a Twitter companion that’s open to creators who submit digital fashion in line with the real thing’s annual theme.

Don’t look for the High Fashion Twitter Met Gala this year.

“As we approach the first Monday of May, the hf twitter met gala team would like to announce that we will not be celebrating this year’s met gala as our values don’t align with the selection of Karl Lagerfeld as the theme,” the coordinators tweeted.

Called the “living soul of fashion” by Wintour, Lagerfeld and his gifts were outsized. So were his words.

THE #METOO MOVEMENT

In the international fashion magazine Numéro in 2018, Lagerfeld said he was “fed up” with the effort to reveal sexual harassment, assault, misconduct and rape.

“What shocks me most in all of this are the starlets who have taken 20 years to remember what happened. Not to mention the fact there are no prosecution witnesses. That said I could not stand Mr Weinstein. I had a problem with him at amfAR,” he said, referring to disgraced Hollywood mogul Harvey Weinstein and a gala held during the Cannes Film Festival to support the fight against AIDS.

ON MODELS

“If you don’t want your pants pulled about, don’t become a model! Join a nunnery, there’ll always be a place for you in the convent. They’re recruiting even!” he told Numéro in the same interview when asked about accusations against stylist and former Interview creative director Karl Templer.

To German news magazine Focus in 2009, Lagerfeld declared of plus-size models: “No one wants to see curvy women.”

In 2010, however, to Vice, when asked if he loved both the emaciated and voluptuous in fashion, Lagerfeld said: “Yes, totally.”

LAGERFELD’S FATPHOBIA

The man who co-authored a diet book after losing 92 pounds (42 kilograms) in 13 months was vocally critical throughout his career of women larger than size 0 or 2. That includes his defence of designers exclusively hiring rail-thin runway models.

Brigitte declaring it would only publish photographs of “real women,” as opposed to professional models, Lagerfeld went on: “You’ve got fat mothers with their bags of chips sitting in front of the television and saying that thin models are ugly. The world of beautiful clothing is about ‘dreams and illusions.’”

According to the book “The World According to Karl,” a collection of Lagerfeld’s own words, he once said: “I think that for both women and men, fashion is the healthiest motivation for losing weight.”

ON ‘UGLY’ AND ANDY WARHOL

“I shouldn’t say this, but physically he was quite repulsive,” Lagerfeld told Vice of Warhol in 2010.

In the same interview, as he discussed his penchant for wearing dark glasses, he described a German journalist who once interviewed him as “some horrible, ugly woman.”

MERKEL AND MIGRANTS

In 2017, the Hamburg-born Lagerfeld sniped at Merkel, then the German chancellor, for opening her country’s borders to migrants during the Syrian refugee crisis in Europe two years prior.

“One cannot — even if there are decades between them — kill millions of Jews so you can bring millions of their worst enemies in their place,” he told the French talk show Salut les Terriens!&nbsp;on Canal 8.

In some English translations, he offered this anecdote: “I know someone in Germany who took a young Syrian and after four days said: ‘The greatest thing Germany invented was the Holocaust.’”

However, others reported the comment this way: “I know someone in Germany who took in a young Syrian who spoke a little English. After four days, do you know what he said to the (German) lady? ‘Germany’s best invention is the Holocaust.’”

Either way, the words prompted hundreds of complaints to Canal 8.

SAME-SEX MARRIAGE

Lagerfeld sent two brides in identical wedding dresses down the runway for the finale of his spring 2013 Chanel haute couture show in Paris, telling The Guardian it was a show of support for the French same-sex marriage law.

But in the 2010 Vice interview, he spoke against same-sex marriage, particularly as it pertains to two men.

“In the 60s, they all said we had the right to the difference. And now, suddenly, they want a bourgeois life,” Lagerfeld said. “For me, it’s difficult to imagine — one of the papas at work and the other at home with the baby. How would that be, for the baby? I don’t know. I see more lesbians married with babies than I see boys married with babies. And I also believe more in the relationship between mother and child than in that between father and child.”

In 2013, while supporting same-sex marriage, Lagerfeld said he was “less keen” on same-sex couples being allowed to adopt.

Why is Karl Lagerfeld, the Met Gala theme, controversial?

Stress and anxiety haunt most of us almost every day of our lives. Sometimes we throw the word around loosely without realising the actual impact it can have on us physically and mentally. A few of us see stress as a good thing, a sign that we are working hard to achieve our goals. Stress seems like an integral fallout of being ambitious and working hard in&nbsp;both our personal and professional lives.&nbsp;

Stressing over something also sometimes carves a path for us to do something better. Some amount of stress, i.e., pressure or tension, is important for our functioning. This is called "Eustress" i.e. positive stress where even though we are worried or tensed, we still feel confident in our ability to handle the challenges in front of us. Eustress is important as it keeps the drive &amp; motivation within us going. Therefore, even though we are challenged, we know we can handle it.

However, issues begin to arise when we are dealing with a lot more than what we can effectively handle and this positive stress turns into distress. When we find ourselves worrying, fretting over, thinking over &amp; over again about certain things or not being able to manage our day-to-day lives efficiently &amp; effectively, that is when we have exceeded our capacity to handle stress and need to do something about it.

Your body and mind give you telltale signs that indicate it is time you do something about the stress. These signs can be physical, emotional or social. Tiny things that are telling you that it is no longer advisable to wear stress as a trophy around your neck.&nbsp;

Damini Grover, Counselling Psychologist and Heal Your Life Coach, tells us the eight key signs that indicate you are struggling with stress.

1. Physical symptoms: If you find yourselves reaching for those headache pills more often than ever, that means your mind is struggling to handle stress. You might also feel tightness in your shoulders or back, random aches &amp; pains, digestive issues etc. when stress gets too much to handle.&nbsp;

2. Difficulty sleeping: How well you sleep, how much you sleep, and how fresh you feel in the morning, can all tell whether you are struggling with stress. You might find yourself sleeping more than normal but still don't feel fresh &amp; active in the morning. Or, you are struggling to fall asleep, wake up in the night several times, have vivid &amp; unpleasant dreams, etc.&nbsp;

3. Difficulty focusing &amp; concentrating on day-to-day tasks: When stress overpowers your brain, it struggles to focus on what matters. If you are finding it difficult to concentrate and manage everyday tasks with ease, take note and work towards tackling stress.

4. Feeling tired, fatigued and unmotivated: Stress also brings down your energy levels. If you haven't spent your energies on any special task in a day, and you still find yourself feeling tired and lacking the motivation to do something, you are probably suffering from a mental drain. Stress might not feel like a tangible thing, but it can suck out all your energy, leaving you feeling tired.

5. Mood Swings: Being overburdened with work and responsibilities often causes stress. When you feel helpless about it, stress overtakes you. It becomes tough to keep a calm mind, you get restless, edgy, and irritated, more than usual. You also tend to feel angry; experience crying spells or don’t feel like interacting and engaging with people at all.

6. Isolating yourself socially: Running away from the crowds and wanting to be alone is another classic symptom of too much stress. People who experience anxiety often want to be alone. Talking to others seems like an impossible task as your brain is too busy processing things that are causing stress in the first place. Also, you might not be willing to let people sense that you are stressed or dealing with something. So you simply start keeping to yourself and avoid social situations.

7. Too much smoking, and alcohol: Sometimes people turn to cigarettes and alcohol to manage the sense of overwhelm brought on by stress. These things might calm you down temporarily, but if you find yourself reaching for them more than usual, seek help.

8. Eating more or eating less than usual: Food acts as a cushion, a comfortable space for many of us. This is how the concept of comfort food arose. There are some foods that can instantly bring on happy hormones. However, beware of overindulgence as stress often leads you to binge eat. Similarly, there are others who start avoiding food when they are stressed. If you have been eating more or less than your usual diet and have been mentally overwhelmed, stress is getting the better of you.&nbsp;

Also Read | Stress Awareness Month 2023: 10 effective ways to deal with stress Damini Grover, Counselling Psychologist and Heal Your Life Coach, tells us the eight key signs that indicate you are struggling with stress. 1. Physical symptoms: If you find yourselves reaching for those headache pills more often than ever, that means your mind is struggling to handle stress. You might also feel tightness in your shoulders or back, random aches & pains, digestive issues etc. when stress gets too much to handle. 2. Difficulty sleeping: How well you sleep, how much you sleep, and how fresh you feel in the morning, can all tell whether you are struggling with stress. You might find yourself sleeping more than normal but still don't feel fresh & active in the morning. Or, you are struggling to fall asleep, wake up in the night several times, have vivid & unpleasant dreams, etc. 3. Difficulty focusing & concentrating on day-to-day tasks: When stress overpowers your brain, it struggles to focus on what matters. Also Read | Stress Awareness Month 2023: Understanding what causes stress 6. 8. Eating more or eating less than usual: Food acts as a cushion, a comfortable space for many of us. This is how the concept of comfort food arose. There are some foods that can instantly bring on happy hormones. However, beware of overindulgence as stress often leads you to binge eat. Similarly, there are others who start avoiding food when they are stressed. If you have been eating more or less than your usual diet and have been mentally overwhelmed, stress is getting the better of you. The agency&nbsp;contacted the social media platform to urge them to remove&nbsp;such videos and warn users against exceeding the recommended doses of over-the-counter (OTC) medications.

"We are aware of news reports of teenagers ending up in emergency rooms or dying after participating in the 'Benadryl Challenge' encouraged in videos posted on the social media application TikTok," the FDA warning said.

"As soon as we became aware of this dangerous trend, we contacted social media platforms to have the content removed," the FDA statement further read. "We are continuing to monitor and work with safety teams at the various social media platforms to remove dangerous content."

Intermittent fasting is touted as an extremely popular weight-loss diet, which may also improve one's healthspan. According to medical experts, the diet improves digestion, reduces inflammation, and protects against age-related diseases. Several celebrities including Gwyneth Paltrow, Terry Crews, Hugh Jackman and Sadhguru among others have sung praises of the 16:8 plan. In this health guide, we'll answer the most asked questions about the viral diet trend that has taken social media by storm.

<h2>What exactly is Intermittent Fasting?&nbsp;</h2>

Fasting is an important centuries-old tradition in many religions and cultures worldwide. Muslims fast during the holy month of Ramadan. Hindus fast during Navratri. Buddhists also fast on several occasions. They all believe in one thing - fasting allows our body to heal and release harmful toxins. Today, new varieties of fasting have put a spin on this ancient practice. Intermittent fasting is one of them!

There're four different types of intermittent fasting, but the 16:8 one is the most popular. It follows the principle of time-restricted eating. You have to fast for about 16 hours and in the remaining eight hours, you can take two or three meals, but in small portions.

Since most people already fast for eight hours&nbsp;while they're sleeping, this method isn't very difficult to follow. You can simply extend the overnight fast by skipping breakfast and not eating until lunch.&nbsp;

If you feel that the 16/8 method is a bit too hard for you, you can switch to the 14/10 method, which involves 14 hours of fasting.

Is intermittent fasting meant for everyone? Here's all you need to know about the viral weight-loss diet

Finding a partner on dating apps like Tinder may go wrong. But how do you then know your partner is not a Tinder swindler, who defrauded women of millions of dollars online under the guise of a diamond magnate.&nbsp;It may calm your nerves to know that now scientists have revealed few of the classic signs you must watch out for before you decide to stop on that swipe and make that person your life.&nbsp;

This study claims to help people spot a romance scammer and navigate dating apps safely by sharing the traits of a Tinder swindler. The bulk of the research is related to the profile of romantic fraud by creating process models to describe how the scam evolved or by examining language patterns and persuasion tactics employed while communicating with their victims.

These findings may be applied to enhance detection and mitigation techniques as well as provide as a starting point for training and awareness efforts.

<h2>So how do you spot a Tinder Swindler?</h2>

To avoid falling for scammers like Simon Leviev, the Netflix Tinder Swindler (actual name Shimon Hayut), experts combed through 232 documents in search of romance scam profiles and potential victims. According to the Daily Mail, the new study exhibited the characteristics of a classic Tinder Swindler.

<h2>1. A perfect Photo op&nbsp;</h2>

According to Dr. Lynsay A Shepherd, a researcher on the study, romantic fraud begins by giving a perfect look to your profile. Depending on the nation in which they reside, the profile of these romance scammers could differ. While Filipinos were luring others by their fictitious sales occupations, Italian profiles pretended to be real estate brokers.

<h2>2. Military Macho</h2>

Many people who engage in romance fraud put on a military garb and pose as serving their country. The reason for doing this is to project an air of dominance. With this, they control their partners' emotions. Later, they go a notch up and pretent to be unable to access their bank accounts. They do this to then request emergency cash. Once the job is done, they vanish with the money. To tangle up their partners in their vicious net, they pretend to have a medical emergency and say they need to provide for a family member.&nbsp;

<h2>3.&nbsp; Sweet Wordplay</h2>

Swindlers know the art of wordplay. They will shower you with praises. They will even give you nicknames. Doing all this shows how much they want a partner. However, flattery enables them to win over their target before requesting payment.

<h2>4. Demanding money&nbsp;</h2>

If in case, the women don't need flattery and they become romantically involved with a Tinder Swindler already, it is a perfect chance for romance scammers then to demand money.&nbsp;

<h2>5. Targets women aged 35-54&nbsp;</h2>

The study found that these scammers target women who have little expertise and a poor grasp of what is a fraud. These women are usually between the ages of 35 and 54. Dr Shepherd said it is essential to carry out research and find fresh methods for protecting people against scams.

Finding a partner on dating apps like Tinder may go wrong. But how do you then know your partner is not a Tinder swindler, who defrauded women of millions of dollars online under the guise of a diamond magnate. It may calm your nerves to know that now scientists have revealed few of the classic signs you must watch out for before you decide to stop on that swipe and make that person your life. So how do you spot a Tinder Swindler? To avoid falling for scammers like Simon Leviev, the Netflix Tinder Swindler (actual name Shimon Hayut), experts combed through 232 documents in search of romance scam profiles and potential victims. According to the Daily Mail, the new study exhibited the characteristics of a classic Tinder Swindler. 1. A perfect Photo op According to Dr. The reason for doing this is to project an air of dominance. With this, they control their partners' emotions. Later, they go a notch up and pretent to be unable to access their bank accounts. They do this to then request emergency cash. Once the job is done, they vanish with the money. To tangle up their partners in their vicious net, they pretend to have a medical emergency and say they need to provide for a family member. 3. Sweet Wordplay Swindlers know the art of wordplay. They will shower you with praises. They will even give you nicknames. Doing all this shows how much they want a partner. However, flattery enables them to win over their target before requesting payment. Watch | What is next in Syrian Civil War?; The rapid development of AI | This World × 4. Demanding money If in case, the women don't need flattery and they become romantically involved with a Tinder Swindler already, it is a perfect chance for romance scammers then to demand money. 5. Targets women aged 35-54 The study found that these scammers target women who have little expertise and a poor grasp of what is a fraud. These women are usually between the ages of 35 and 54. Dr Shepherd said it is essential to carry out research and find fresh methods for protecting people against scams. Are you dating a 'Tinder swindler'? Scientists reveal these classic signs you must watch out for

According to a recent Baycrest study, older persons tend to be less capable than their younger counterparts to distinguish between computer-generated (AI) speech and human speech. “Findings from this study on computer-generated AI speech suggest that older adults may be at a higher risk of being taken advantage of,” said Dr Bjorn Herrmann, Baycrest’s Canada Research Chair in Auditory Aging, Scientist at Baycrest’s Rotman Research Institute and lead author of this study.

“While this area of research is still in its infancy, further findings could lead to the development of training programmes for older adults to help them navigate these challenges,” he said.

In this study, which was the first to examine AI speech recognition in older adults, younger (~30 years) and older (~60 years) adults listened to sentences spoken by 10 different human speakers (five male, five female) and sentences created using 10 AI voices (5 male, 5 female). In one experiment, participants were asked how natural they found the human and AI voices to be. In another, they were asked to identify whether a sentence was spoken by a human or by an AI voice.

Results showed that compared to younger adults, older adults found AI speech more natural and were less able to correctly identify when speech was generated by a computer.

The reasons for this remain unclear and are the subject of follow-up research by Dr Herrmann and his team. While they have ruled out hearing loss and familiarity with AI technology as factors, it could be related to older adults’ diminished ability to recognise different emotions in speech.

“As we get older, we seem to pay more attention to the actual words in speech than to its rhythm and intonation when trying to get information about the emotions being communicated,” said Dr Herrmann, adding, “It could be that recognition of AI speech relies on the processing of rhythm and intonation rather than words, which could, in turn, explain older adults’ reduced ability to identify AI speech.”

In addition to helping develop AI-related training programmes, the results of this and future studies could help inform interactive AI technology for older adults. This kind of technology often relies on AI speech and has increasing applicability in medical, long-term care and other support spaces for older adults. For example, therapeutic AI robots can be used to comfort and calm individuals experiencing agitation due to dementia.

By better understanding how older adults perceive AI speech, we can ensure that AI technologies effectively meet their needs, ultimately improving their quality of life and helping them lead a life of purpose, inspiration and fulfilment.
