A groundbreaking observational study, which is being considered one of the largest and highest-quality&nbsp;studies&nbsp;of its kind, has revealed that seven healthy lifestyle habits can significantly cut the risk of depression, even for individuals genetically predisposed to the condition. These habits are:&nbsp;moderating&nbsp;alcohol consumption, a healthy diet, regular physical activity, sufficient sleep, abstaining from smoking, avoiding sedentary behaviour, and maintaining social connections. Following such a lifestyle was not only associated with a decreased risk of depression, but also yielded benefits such as enhanced brain volumes and improved immune and metabolic functions.

One's susceptibility to depression has long been linked to genetic factors, but this new analysis, published in Nature Mental Health, demonstrates that adhering to a set of seven healthy lifestyle habits can remarkably mitigate that risk and even overcome a genetic predisposition.

To conduct this groundbreaking study, a team of researchers from Fudan University in China and the University of Cambridge in the UK harnessed the comprehensive dataset of the UK Biobank, which houses in-depth genetic and health information from a staggering half a million UK participants. The wealth of data at their disposal is currently driving a much-needed renaissance in high-quality epidemiological studies.

The researchers initiated their investigation by examining the self-reported lifestyle habits of 287,282 individuals, focusing on seven key factors: diet, alcohol consumption, physical activity, sleep, smoking, sedentary behaviour, and social connection. They then monitored these individuals over nine years to identify those who subsequently experienced depression, assessing how each of these habits influenced the risk.

Their findings are as follows:

1. Eating a healthy diet, defined as one rich in whole grains, fruits, vegetables, and fish while limiting refined grains, processed meats, and red meat, reduced the risk of depression by 6 per cent.

2. Consuming no more than one alcoholic drink per day for women and two for men was associated with an 11 per cent reduction in risk.

3. Spending fewer than four hours per day outside of work watching TV or using a computer led to a 13 per cent decrease in depression risk.

4. Engaging in at least 150 minutes of moderate physical activity or 75 minutes of vigorous physical activity per week was linked to a 14 per cent&nbsp;reduction in risk.

5. Staying socially connected with friends and family resulted in an 18 per cent reduction in the risk of depression.

6. Never smoking was associated with a substantial 20 per cent decline in risk.

7. Consistently sleeping seven to nine hours each night, on average, lowered the risk of depression by a significant 22 per cent.

Remarkably, individuals who adhered to at least five of these wholesome habits experienced a remarkable 57 per cent decrease in depression risk when compared to those who followed only one or none of these practices.

Moving beyond these lifestyle habits, the researchers delved into genetic data for nearly 200,000 individuals, discovering that adopting at least five of these habits proved effective in helping people genetically predisposed to depression avoid developing the condition.

"Participants with high genetic risk but favourable lifestyle had a lower risk of depression than those with intermediate or low genetic risk but unfavourable lifestyle and those with intermediate genetic risk and intermediate lifestyle," the researchers noted.

Although genetic factors can indeed increase the risk of depression, this study demonstrates that a healthy lifestyle can be even more influential in preventing this condition. According to Barbara Sahakian, a professor of psychiatry at the University of Cambridge and one of the authors of the study, "Our DNA — the genetic hand we’ve been dealt — can increase our risk of depression, but we’ve shown that a healthy lifestyle is potentially more important."

The researchers were also granted access to brain imaging data for 33,000 of the study's participants, which offered insights into a potential causal mechanism by which lifestyle can impact depression. Higher lifestyle scores were associated with a greater volume in the orbitofrontal cortex and the medial prefrontal cortex, suggesting enhanced cognitive control and emotion regulation.

Furthermore, blood work data was available for some of the study's subjects, hinting at improved immune and metabolic function among those who followed a healthy lifestyle.

Excessive sitting has become a major concern for most of us, especially since a lot of jobs involve people sitting for prolonged&nbsp;periods of time.&nbsp;We have time and again heard of the ill effects of such a scenario on our health.&nbsp;However, recent&nbsp;research has found that just a few minutes of&nbsp;exercise or activity can help you counter the effects of prolonged sitting.&nbsp;

The research published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine found that 22 minutes of moderate to vigorous activity or exercise can help in maintaining your health. The experts found that as a person's activity level increases, the risk of dying prematurely from any disease decreases.&nbsp;

The study appears to contradict the findings of earlier studies which showed that regular exercise cannot zero out the negative effect of sitting down. A 2017 study published in the Annals of Internal found that working out regularly can reduce some harms of prolonged sitting but cannot eliminate them completely.&nbsp;

<h2>150 minutes per week</h2>

The study's lead author, Edvard Sagelv, a researcher at the Arctic University of Norway, says that 150 minutes per week of&nbsp;activity is enough to counteract the detrimental health&nbsp;effects of prolonged sitting.&nbsp;

He added, "This is the beautiful part: we are talking about activities that make you breathe a little bit heavier, like brisk walking, or gardening or walking up a hill."

To many of us, these 150 minutes appear to be a lot, but Edvard broke it down into manageable terms for us.&nbsp;

He said, "Think of it: only 20 minutes of this a day is enough, meaning, a small stroll of 10 minutes twice a day — like jumping off the bus one stop before your actual destination to work and then when taking the bus back home, jumping off one stop before."

The study analysed 12,000 people from Sweden, Norway and the US for two years. The participants wore movement detection devices on their hips for 10 hours a day for at least four days.&nbsp;

The study found that over an average of five years, 805 people had died. Furthermore, of those who died, 353 had spent less than 10 and half hours seated, while 448 averaged 10 and half hours or more.&nbsp;

The researchers found that people sitting for over 12 hours a day are at 38 per cent increased risk of death as compared to those who sit for 8 hours, but this applies&nbsp;to only those who manage to do a few minutes of exercise.&nbsp;

20 minutes of daily activity might help you decrease harm caused by prolonged sitting: Study

Gujarat's vibrant Navratri celebrations recently took a tragic turn as the joyous rhythms of Garba were marred by a series of unexpected heart attack deaths. At least 10 people lost their lives within a span of 24 hours, which included both teenagers and middle-aged adults. The youngest victim was&nbsp;a 13-year-old boy from Dabhoi, Baroda.

During this time, an overwhelming surge in heart-related emergencies was reported. Over the first six days of Navratri, the 108 emergency ambulance services responded to 521 calls related to heart issues, in addition to 609 calls for breathlessness, according to India Today.

WION spoke to a medical professional to shed light on the potential cardiovascular risks at high-energy, celebratory events.

The traditional Garba dance, characterised by vigorous movements and spirited twirls to music, has long been cherished for its infectious energy. However, this very dynamism places significant stress on the heart.

Dr&nbsp;Talha Meeran (Consultant Cardiologist in the Department of Advanced Cardiac Sciences and Heart Transplant at Sir H. N. Reliance Foundation Hospital and Research Centre) said that&nbsp;strenuous exertion can raise the immediate risk of sudden cardiac arrest and heart attack. It's not just confined to garba but pertains to any strenuous exertion of this nature.

The expert shared that for some people,&nbsp;engaging in garba may introduce a higher level of physical exertion, making them unaccustomed to the sudden increase in heart rate, consequently elevating the oxygen consumption in their heart muscles. Meanwhile, for the younger generation, cardiac arrests can primarily be related to genetic factors.&nbsp;

Dr&nbsp;Talha added, "Heart attacks, scientifically termed myocardial infarctions, typically affect middle-aged or older individuals due to blocked blood flow to the heart, however, teenagers may experience cardiac arrest, where the heart suddenly stops beating, due to genetic predispositions."

To mitigate the risk of heart attacks during high-energy events like garba, consider the following precautions:

Understand Your Limits: Recognise your physical capabilities and gradually increase your activity level if you're not accustomed to high-intensity exercise.

Stay Hydrated: Consume an ample amount of water, especially in hot and humid conditions, and avoid excessive caffeine and alcohol intake, which can lead to dehydration.

Warm-Up and Cool-Down: Prepare your body with warm-up exercises and conclude with a cool-down routine to gradually lower your heart rate.

Listen to Your Body:&nbsp;Be attentive to your body's signals during physical activity. If you experience chest pain, dizziness, shortness of breath, or unusual fatigue, take a break and seek medical help if necessary.

Avoid Overeating:&nbsp;Opt for lighter, balanced meals before vigorous activities to prevent additional strain on your heart.

Know Your Health Status:&nbsp;Consult your healthcare provider if you have pre-existing heart conditions, and follow their recommendations for safe levels of exertion.

Medication and Monitoring:&nbsp;If you're on medication for heart conditions, adhere to your prescribed regimen. Regularly monitor your blood pressure and heart rate to gauge your body's response to physical activity.

Be Prepared for Emergencies:&nbsp;Familiarise yourself with the location of automated external defibrillators (AEDs) and individuals trained in CPR to ensure a swift response in emergencies.

Stay Informed:&nbsp;Understand the potential risks associated with the specific activity you plan to partake in, including its duration and intensity.

Employ the Buddy System:&nbsp;Whenever possible, attend high-energy events with a friend or family member who is aware of your health conditions and can assist in emergencies.

<h2>What to do if you or someone you know is experiencing a&nbsp;heart attack?</h2>

Call 911 or Your Local Emergency Services: Do not underestimate the symptoms of a heart attack. If you suspect a heart attack, immediately call 911 or your local emergency number. If it's impossible to get an ambulance or emergency vehicle promptly, ask a neighbour or friend to drive you to the nearest hospital. Only drive yourself as a last resort, as it can endanger you and others, considering the potential for your condition to worsen.

Chew and Swallow an Aspirin:&nbsp;While awaiting emergency assistance, chew and swallow an aspirin. Aspirin helps prevent blood clotting, and when taken during a heart attack, it may reduce heart damage. Do not take aspirin if you are allergic to it or if your healthcare provider has advised against its use.

Take Nitroglycerin, If Prescribed:&nbsp;If you believe you are experiencing a heart attack and your healthcare provider has previously prescribed nitroglycerin, follow their instructions for taking it while waiting for emergency medical assistance.

Initiate CPR if the Person is Unconscious:&nbsp;If the individual is unconscious and not breathing or if you cannot find a pulse, start CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) to maintain blood circulation after calling for emergency medical help. Compress the centre of the person's chest with a firm and rapid rhythm, aiming for about 100 to 120 compressions per minute.

Use an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) if Available:&nbsp;If an automated external defibrillator (AED) is readily accessible and the person is unconscious, follow the device's instructions for proper usage.

Remember, swift action is essential during a heart attack to maximise the chances of survival and minimise potential damage to the heart. Always seek immediate medical attention and follow the guidance of healthcare professionals and emergency responders.

Explained | What's leading to heart attack deaths during Navratri at garba events and how to avoid it?

You must have heard dozens of times that hardships and mental health disorders produce the most amazing creative work. But is it true or just a thing people say to motivate others?

Links between creativity and mental health have been extensively discussed and studied by psychologists and other researchers for centuries. And, many believe that the link between the two is undeniable.&nbsp;

This article delves into the intricate relationship between depression and creativity, shedding light on how this mental health disorder can influence, and sometimes even ignite creative expression and how creativity can be used to treat mental health issues like depression and anxiety.

<h2>Understanding Depression</h2>

Depression is a silent epidemic affecting millions worldwide. It extends beyond mere sadness or passing mood swings, manifesting as a profound and persistent mental health disorder that can cast a shadow over every facet of a person's life. While the symptoms and consequences of depression are well-documented, a less-explored facet is its potential link to creativity.&nbsp;

Let's understand it better!

1. A Multifaceted Condition:

Depression is a complex condition marked by persistent feelings of sadness, hopelessness, loss of interest in activities, changes in appetite or sleep patterns, fatigue, and impaired concentration. This debilitating condition affects individuals emotionally, mentally, and physically, with causes stemming from a blend of genetic, biological, environmental, and psychological factors.

2. Seeking Expression Through Creativity:

Depression often leaves individuals struggling to express themselves verbally, prompting them to seek alternative outlets for their emotions. Creative expression in the forms of art, music, writing, and other artistic endeavours emerges as one such channel.

<h2>The Link Between Depression and Creativity</h2>

1. Creative Geniuses and Mental Health:

Throughout history, many celebrated artists, writers, musicians, and other creative minds have battled mental health issues, including depression. Renowned figures like Vincent van Gogh, Sylvia Plath, and Virginia Woolf, while wrestling with depression, have left an indelible mark on their respective fields.

2. The Emotional Wellspring:

One theory suggests that the intense emotions experienced by those with depression may fuel their creative processes. Depression often plunges individuals into emotional vulnerability and heightened sensitivity, enabling them to perceive and interpret the world in a unique and profound way. This emotional depth can serve as a wellspring of inspiration for creative endeavours.

<h2>The Creative Process as Therapy</h2>

1. Creative Activities as a Therapeutic Outlet:

Engaging in creative activities offers a form of self-expression and therapeutic relief for individuals grappling with depression. Art, music, writing, and other creative outlets provide a means to externalise internal struggles, bringing a sense of relief and catharsis. Such creative expression aids in processing emotions, gaining self-awareness, and making sense of experiences.

2. The Role of Art Therapy:

Art therapy, a recognised form of treatment for mental health issues including depression, allows individuals to communicate their emotions and thoughts through various art forms. It promotes healing and resilience.

<h2>The Duality of Creativity and Mental Health</h2>

1. The Creative Toll:

While creativity can serve as a coping mechanism for depression, it's essential to recognise that the creative process itself can take a toll on mental health. Pressure to produce outstanding work, meet deadlines, and gain recognition can heighten stress and anxiety, contributing to the cycle of depression.

2. Disruptive Lifestyle:

The irregular schedules and lifestyles often associated with creative professions can disrupt healthy routines, affecting sleep patterns and overall well-being. This erratic nature of creative work can lead to isolation and feelings of inadequacy, exacerbating the challenges of managing depression.

<h2>Strategies for Balance</h2>

1. Establish a Routine:

Creating a structured daily routine can provide stability and support mental health. Allocate time for creative pursuits, self-care, exercise, and rest.

2. Seek Professional Help:

Reach out to mental health professionals, such as therapists or counsellors, to receive guidance and support in managing depression effectively.

3. Connect with a Community:

Joining a community of like-minded individuals, whether online or in person, can provide a sense of belonging and emotional support.

4. Practice Self-Compassion:

Be kind to yourself and acknowledge your achievements, no matter how small. Avoid self-criticism and unrealistic expectations.

5. Incorporate Mindfulness:

Engage in mindfulness practices, such as meditation or deep breathing, to centre yourself and reduce stress.

Depression is a complex mental health disorder that affects countless individuals, often in silence. While the relationship between depression and creativity is intricate, creative expression can serve as a therapeutic outlet for those struggling with this condition.

By understanding this connection and implementing strategies to balance creativity and mental health, individuals can navigate the challenges of depression while still nurturing their creative potential. Seeking professional help and cultivating a supportive environment are essential steps in managing depression effectively and embracing the healing power of creativity.

The silent struggle: The connection between depression and creativity | Depression Awareness Month 2023

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder that affects millions of children and adults worldwide. It's often misunderstood and stigmatised, but with the right information, understanding, and support, individuals with ADHD can lead successful and fulfilling lives.

<h2>Understanding ADHD</h2>

ADHD is a complex condition that affects individuals in various ways. It's characterised by symptoms of inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity. These symptoms can manifest differently in different people, and it's important to remember that not all individuals with ADHD display all of these symptoms. Understanding the primary aspects of ADHD is crucial to recognising the condition's signs and seeking appropriate support.

<h2>Common Symptoms</h2>

Inattention: Individuals with ADHD may have difficulty sustaining attention, often becoming easily distracted. They may struggle to organise tasks or complete projects, frequently making careless mistakes. Forgetfulness and the tendency to lose important items are also common signs.

Hyperactivity: Hyperactivity is another hallmark of ADHD, particularly in children. This can involve constant fidgeting, difficulty sitting still, or excessive talking.

Impulsivity: Individuals with ADHD may act without thinking, often blurting out comments or interrupting others. They may have trouble waiting for their turn and exhibit impatience.

Difficulty in Executive Functioning: Problems related to executive functions, such as planning, organisation, and time management, are often prominent in individuals with ADHD.

<h2>ADHD Types</h2>

There are three primary types of ADHD, each with distinct characteristics:

Predominantly Inattentive Presentation: This is characterised by difficulties in paying attention and following instructions without the hyperactivity component being as pronounced.

<h2>Diagnosis</h2>

Diagnosing ADHD is a complex process that requires the involvement of trained healthcare professionals. Physicians typically follow specific criteria, such as the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5), to establish a diagnosis. It involves a comprehensive assessment, including interviews with the individual, parents (for children), teachers, and observing behavioural patterns. It is essential to rule out other potential causes of similar symptoms, like anxiety or learning disabilities, before diagnosing ADHD.

<h2>Treatment Options</h2>

ADHD can be managed with the right treatment, and early intervention is crucial for managing symptoms effectively. Treatment plans are tailored to individual needs and often involve a combination of approaches:

Behavioural Interventions

Behavioural therapy, such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Parent Training, can help individuals with ADHD develop coping strategies to manage their symptoms. These therapies focus on organisation, time management, and emotional regulation.

Medication

Medications are common in ADHD treatment, especially for moderate to severe cases. The most commonly prescribed medications for ADHD are stimulants, which can increase focus and reduce impulsivity. Non-stimulant medications are also available and can be effective for some individuals.

Lifestyle Modifications

Lifestyle changes can significantly impact ADHD management. Regular exercise, a balanced diet, and adequate sleep are vital. Many individuals also benefit from setting routines and using tools like calendars and reminders to help them stay organised.

Support Services

Education and support are key for individuals with ADHD. Schools and workplaces should be aware of the condition to provide appropriate accommodations. Support groups and counselling can also be helpful for individuals and families.

Alternative Therapies

Some individuals explore alternative therapies like neurofeedback, dietary modifications, or herbal remedies. These may work for some but should be approached with caution and in consultation with healthcare providers.

Depression, a common yet complex mental health disorder, affects millions of people worldwide. It can have a profound impact on an individual's daily life, relationships, and overall well-being. In this comprehensive guide, we will delve into what depression is, its symptoms, causes, methods of diagnosis, available treatments, and preventive measures.

<h2>Understanding Depression</h2>

Depression, often referred to as Major Depressive Disorder (MDD), is characterised by a persistent feeling of sadness or a lack of interest or pleasure in activities that individuals once found enjoyable. This emotional state goes beyond the normal ups and downs that we all experience in life.

<h2>Common Symptoms of Depression</h2>

Persistent Sadness: A prominent and enduring feeling of sadness or emptiness is one of the central symptoms of depression.

Loss of Interest: Individuals with depression often lose interest in activities, hobbies, and relationships they previously enjoyed.

Fatigue and Decreased Energy: A constant feeling of fatigue and a lack of energy are typical, even after a full night's sleep.

Changes in Appetite or Weight: Significant weight loss or gain and changes in appetite can be signs of depression.

Sleep Disturbances: Insomnia or oversleeping are common in individuals with depression.

Feelings of Guilt or Worthlessness: Depressed individuals often experience intense guilt or feelings of worthlessness, sometimes without a clear reason.

Difficulty Concentrating: Concentration and decision-making can become challenging.

Suicidal Thoughts: In severe cases, thoughts of self-harm or suicide may occur.

Depression can vary in intensity from mild to severe, with symptoms interfering with daily life in varying degrees.

<h2>Causes of Depression</h2>

Depression is a complex condition influenced by a combination of genetic, biological, environmental, and psychological factors. Understanding the causes of depression is essential for both prevention and effective treatment.

Biological Factors

Brain Chemistry: Imbalances in neurotransmitters, such as serotonin, norepinephrine, and dopamine, can contribute to depressive symptoms.

Hormones: Hormonal changes, particularly during pregnancy, postpartum, and menopause, can affect mood.

Genetics: A family history of depression may increase an individual's risk.

Psychological Factors

Personality: Certain personality traits, such as low self-esteem, pessimism, or being overly self-critical, can predispose someone to depression.

Trauma and Stress: Exposure to traumatic events or prolonged periods of stress can trigger depression.

Environmental Factors

Life Changes: Significant life events like divorce, job loss, or the death of a loved one can lead to depression.

Childhood Trauma: Experiences of abuse or neglect during childhood can increase the risk of depression later in life.

<h2>Diagnosing Depression</h2>

Diagnosing depression is primarily based on the assessment of symptoms and their duration. It is essential to consult a mental health professional, such as a psychiatrist or psychologist, for a comprehensive evaluation. The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) provides criteria for diagnosing depression.

A typical diagnostic process includes:

Clinical Interview: The healthcare provider conducts an in-depth interview to understand the individual's symptoms, history, and any contributing factors.

Physical Examination: A physical examination may be performed to rule out underlying medical conditions.

Lab Tests: Blood tests may be ordered to eliminate any potential physical causes of depressive symptoms.

Psychological Assessment: Questionnaires and psychological assessments may be administered to gauge the severity of depression.

<h2>Treating Depression</h2>

Treatment for depression varies based on the individual's specific symptoms, their severity, and their unique needs. An effective approach often combines multiple strategies:

Psychotherapy (Talk Therapy)

Psychotherapy, such as Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT) or Interpersonal Therapy (IPT), can help individuals identify and manage negative thought patterns and develop effective coping strategies.

Medications

Antidepressant medications can be prescribed, including Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRIs) and Serotonin-Norepinephrine Reuptake Inhibitors (SNRIs), to help regulate neurotransmitters in the brain.

Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT)

ECT is a treatment option for severe cases of depression when other treatments haven't been effective. It involves brief electrical stimulation to the brain to induce a seizure, which can help regulate mood.

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS)

TMS is a non-invasive procedure that uses magnetic fields to stimulate specific areas of the brain. It's a treatment option for individuals who haven't responded to other therapies.

Lifestyle Modifications

A healthy lifestyle, including regular exercise, a balanced diet, and adequate sleep, can significantly improve mood and overall well-being.

Support Groups

Participating in support groups can provide a sense of community and understanding for individuals living with depression.

<h2>Preventing Depression</h2>

While not all instances of depression can be prevented, there are strategies that can help reduce the risk or minimise the impact of depressive episodes:

Early Intervention: Seeking help at the first signs of depression can lead to more effective treatment outcomes.

Stress Management: Learning and practising stress management techniques can help reduce the risk of developing depression.

Healthy Lifestyle: Regular physical activity, a balanced diet, and adequate sleep promote overall mental well-being.

Strong Social Connections: Building and maintaining supportive relationships can serve as a protective factor against depression.

Avoid Alcohol and Substance Abuse: Alcohol and substance abuse can increase the risk of depression. Avoiding or seeking help for these issues is vital.

Mindfulness and Meditation: Techniques like mindfulness and meditation can help individuals manage stress and improve mental resilience.

<h2>The Road to Recovery</h2>

Depression is a complex mental health condition that requires attention and care. It's important for individuals living with depression to know that help is available and that they are not alone. Effective treatment and support can lead to recovery and a fulfilling life.

<h2>Conclusion</h2>

Depression is a prevalent mental health condition that affects many people. Understanding its symptoms, causes, diagnosis, and available treatments is crucial for individuals living with depression and their loved ones. While managing depression can be challenging, it's essential to seek help from mental health professionals, as effective treatment and support can lead to recovery and a better quality of life. Prevention strategies, such as stress management, a healthy lifestyle, and building strong social connections, can help reduce the risk of developing depression and promote overall mental well-being.

What is the first thing that pops into your head when you think of the term “Wisdom”? We sat for a chat with Mr Sanjeev Jain, an IIT alumnus who is also the founder of NEMA Eldercare. According to him, “Wisdom” is synonymous with the senior population of our country, our lovely older folks who bring with them a wealth of experience and stories that enrich our community every day. This broad category of people refers to those who have gracefully journeyed into retirement age, normally aged 60-65 years or above. After a lifetime’s worth of hard work and significant contributions to society, they deserve to live their golden years with comfort &amp; respect. However, in today’s world, sadly, some are&nbsp;often considered&nbsp;a burden in society, because they need to be taken care of and newer generations have to cater to their needs - be it medical, physical or emotional support.&nbsp;Also, in India, sending seniors to aged care homes or acquiring help is believed to be taboo as a result of rash portrayal in media and a feeling of “abandonment” in society. For these reasons, elderly people do not get the enriched life that they deserve.&nbsp;

From our discussion with Sanjeev, we learned&nbsp;that loneliness has been a silent epidemic among seniors for decades, casting a forbidding shadow over their golden years. This feeling of isolation and disconnect has a wide-ranging effect on elderly people's physical, psychological, and social well-being. Even though elderly people are particularly vulnerable, the onset of the digital age offers enhanced opportunities to combat this disease.

Here we have listed the causes and consequences of the loneliness epidemic and how we can utilise technology to fight the feeling of isolation in older people.

<h2>What Causes the Loneliness Epidemic?</h2>

Loneliness among seniors is a complex issue that is impacted by a number of factors. The following are a few of the root causes:

1.&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;Physical Health Challenges: The ability of elders to participate in social activities may be constrained by mobility problems, chronic diseases, and declining independence.

2.&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;Social Isolation: Loss of friends and loved ones with growing age leads to social isolation.

3.&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;Generation Divide: In this new era, where everything is digital, older people tend to lag behind due to limited access and not being that tech savvy.&nbsp;

4.&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;Transportation Issues: Elderly people cannot travel or drive on their own. Lack of availability of transportation can be a massive problem in maintaining social connections.&nbsp;

<h2>What Are the Consequences of Senior Loneliness?</h2>

Loneliness among seniors bears consequences that extend far beyond solitude. According to a Senior Care Specialist, here’s how!

●&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;Senior citizens tend to get lonely due to their age. Loneliness can lead to depression, anxiety, and cognitive decline among seniors, affecting their mental health.

●&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;Loneliness can diminish the overall quality of life for seniors, affecting their emotional well-being as well as personal satisfaction.&nbsp;

●&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;Elderly people continue to battle other diseases, and loneliness adds to that. A range of health issues, including heart problems and weak immune systems can be a repercussion of senior loneliness.

<h2>How Can We Use Technology and Social Activities to Tackle Senior Loneliness?</h2>

Technology in the digital age offers a ray of hope in resolving senior loneliness. Here are a few insider tips to help you tackle senior loneliness:
&nbsp;
1.&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;Social Media and Communication Apps: Websites and apps like Facebook, WhatsApp, and Zoom offer seniors simple ways to stay in touch with loved ones, even if they live far apart.

2.&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;Online Communities: Seniors can interact with others who share their interests and hobbies by joining online communities that are tailored to like-minded individuals.

3.&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;Tech Literacy Initiatives: Tech literacy programs can help seniors stay connected by bridging the digital gap by teaching them how to use digital devices and browse online.

4.&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;Services for Telehealth: Telehealth services allow elders to consult with medical specialists while relaxing in their homes or comfort spaces, reducing the feeling of loneliness and enhancing access to healthcare.

<h2>Government Support and Community Initiatives</h2>

It is essential to pair technical solutions with government assistance, and community-based efforts to successfully tackle the epidemic of elder loneliness. You can do this in the following ways:&nbsp;

●&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;Encourage seniors to utilise technology for socialising. Senior centres can also organise technological sessions, social gatherings, and support groups.

●&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;Volunteers can give companionship and tech support, enabling them to feel more at ease using digital tools.

●&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;Ongoing research should evaluate the impact of technology-based therapies affecting loneliness among seniors, allowing for strategic adjustments and enhancements.

●&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;We can provide seniors with the care they need by working with the government, raising awareness about the value of home healthcare, assisted living, and independent living, and locating the best-aged assistance.

●&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;By raising the intensity of hospitality services which include food, housekeeping and laundry, transport, safety and security, etc.&nbsp;

●&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;In case of deteriorating medical conditions, consider moving to specialised care home providers.&nbsp;

Senior loneliness is a serious problem that has to be addressed right away. Technology is an effective tool in the fight against elder loneliness in the digital age because it gives seniors fresh ways to interact with their loved ones and the rest of the world. To guarantee that all seniors, regardless of their digital literacy or socioeconomic level, community initiatives and government assistance must be included, so that they can utilise the benefits from these solutions. The social stigma surrounding aged care homes must also be removed. Together, we can give our seniors a connected and meaningful life, enhancing their mental and physical health while easing the strain on healthcare systems. Also by bridging the gap of isolation, we can ensure that seniors experience the joy and companionship that they deserve in their golden years.

Loneliness can lead to depression, anxiety, and cognitive decline among seniors, affecting their mental health. ● Loneliness can diminish the overall quality of life for seniors, affecting their emotional well-being as well as personal satisfaction. ● Elderly people continue to battle other diseases, and loneliness adds to that. A range of health issues, including heart problems and weak immune systems can be a repercussion of senior loneliness. How Can We Use Technology and Social Activities to Tackle Senior Loneliness? Technology in the digital age offers a ray of hope in resolving senior loneliness. Here are a few insider tips to help you tackle senior loneliness: 1. Social Media and Communication Apps: Websites and apps like Facebook, WhatsApp, and Zoom offer seniors simple ways to stay in touch with loved ones, even if they live far apart. 2. Online Communities: Seniors can interact with others who share their interests and hobbies by joining online communities that are tailored to like-minded individuals. 3. Tech Literacy Initiatives: Tech literacy programs can help seniors stay connected by bridging the digital gap by teaching them how to use digital devices and browse online. 4. Services for Telehealth: Telehealth services allow elders to consult with medical specialists while relaxing in their homes or comfort spaces, reducing the feeling of loneliness and enhancing access to healthcare. Government Support and Community Initiatives It is essential to pair technical solutions with government assistance, and community-based efforts to successfully tackle the epidemic of elder loneliness. You can do this in the following ways: ● Encourage seniors to utilise technology for socialising. Senior centres can also organise technological sessions, social gatherings, and support groups. ● Volunteers can give companionship and tech support, enabling them to feel more at ease using digital tools. ● Ongoing research should evaluate the impact of technology-based therapies affecting loneliness among seniors, allowing for strategic adjustments and enhancements. ● We can provide seniors with the care they need by working with the government, raising awareness about the value of home healthcare, assisted living, and independent living, and locating the best-aged assistance. ● By raising the intensity of hospitality services which include food, housekeeping and laundry, transport, safety and security, etc. ● In case of deteriorating medical conditions, consider moving to specialised care home providers. The Loneliness Epidemic: Tackling isolation among seniors in a digital age

Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a well-recognised neurodevelopmental condition characterised by inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity. Although inattention is known to be the most prevalent subtype, it is equally important to shed light on the lesser-known subtype, i.e.&nbsp;Hyperactive-Impulsive Presentation (ADHD-HI). Understanding this unique subtype is pivotal for an accurate diagnosis, effective treatment, and ultimately improving the quality of life for those grappling with its challenges.

<h2>Delving into the Unique Traits of ADHD-HI</h2>

ADHD-HI, as the name implies, primarily features hyperactivity and impulsivity, with inattention playing a lesser role. Individuals with this subtype often exhibit heightened levels of physical restlessness, an inability to stay still, and a pronounced inclination toward impulsive actions.

<h2>Understanding Hyperactivity</h2>

Hyperactivity is a hallmark of ADHD-HI. Individuals display excessive restlessness and a constant need for movement. They may fidget, tap their feet, or find it difficult to sit still for extended periods. This surplus energy often seeks physical outlets, such as sports or other high-energy activities.

ADHD behaviour demonstrated as hyperactivity &amp; impulsiveness

Office Environment:

&nbsp; - Hyperactivity: Constantly shifting in the chair, tapping feet, difficulty in staying seated during meetings.
&nbsp; - Impulsivity: Interrupting colleagues during discussions, impulsively expressing opinions without fully considering the topic.

Relationships:

&nbsp; - Hyperactivity: Restlessness during conversations, frequently changing topics, inability to sit calmly.
&nbsp; - Impulsivity: Making impulsive decisions without consulting the partner, sudden plans or changes in plans.

Hyperactivity and impulsivity might lead to a partner feeling overwhelmed or neglected, as the individual with ADHD-HI can struggle to give undivided attention or engage in balanced conversations.

Children:

&nbsp; - Hyperactivity: Running around excessively, unable to sit still during class, fidgeting and squirming.
&nbsp; - Impulsivity: Blurting out answers in class without raising a hand, difficulty waiting for their turn during games or activities.

On the Road:

&nbsp; - Hyperactivity: Excessive speeding, frequent lane changes, impatience in traffic.
&nbsp; - Impulsivity: Aggressive driving, impulsive overtaking, disregarding traffic rules.

<h2>Exploring Impulsivity</h2>

Impulsivity refers to acting without careful consideration of consequences. In ADHD-HI, impulsivity is notably significant. Individuals may interrupt conversations, act on immediate urges without assessing potential outcomes, and grapple with impulse control in various situations.

<h2>Unveiling the Multifaceted Challenges Faced by Individuals with ADHD-HI</h2>

Living with ADHD-HI presents distinctive challenges that affect various aspects of an individual's life, including education, work, relationships, and self-esteem.

Impact on Academic and Professional Life

In educational settings, hyperactivity and impulsivity can manifest as difficulty remaining seated, frequent interruptions of teachers or classmates, and struggles to follow instructions. These challenges can significantly hinder academic performance and social interactions.

Similarly, in the professional realm, individuals with ADHD-HI might encounter challenges in maintaining focus during meetings, meeting deadlines, and adhering to structured work hours. The constant need for movement and impulsive tendencies can impact productivity and job satisfaction.

Strain on Relationships

Hyperactivity and impulsivity can strain personal relationships. The constant movement and difficulty in remaining attentive during conversations make it challenging to maintain meaningful connections. Impulsivity may lead to abrupt or inappropriate comments, inadvertently causing tension or misunderstandings.

Impact on Self-Esteem

The conspicuous hyperactivity and impulsive behaviour experienced by individuals with ADHD-HI can lead to feelings of self-consciousness and lowered self-esteem. Social challenges and the potential for negative feedback can significantly impact an individual's perception of themselves.

<h2>Diagnosis and Treatment</h2>

Accurate diagnosis of ADHD-HI necessitates a comprehensive assessment, considering observed behaviours, medical history, and standardised ADHD-specific rating scales. Individuals need to meet the criteria outlined in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) to obtain a precise diagnosis.

<h2>Tailored Treatment Approaches</h2>

•&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;Behavioural Therapy: Behaviour modification therapies, notably cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT), prove instrumental in managing impulsivity and hyperactivity. CBT helps individuals develop coping strategies and techniques for impulse control.

•&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;Medication Management: While stimulant medications are commonly prescribed for ADHD, careful calibration is necessary for individuals with ADHD-HI. The objective is to effectively manage hyperactivity and impulsivity while minimising potential side effects.

•&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;Lifestyle Adjustments: Implementing lifestyle changes such as regular exercise, adhering to a structured routine, maintaining a balanced diet, ensuring adequate sleep, and practising stress management techniques can significantly aid in managing the symptoms of ADHD-HI.

Hyperactive-impulsive presentation of ADHD: Understanding the rare subtype | ADHD Awareness Month 2023

According to a study, obesity during early pregnancy appears to be a strong predictor of future cardiovascular disease and has been linked to adverse pregnancy outcomes such as high blood pressure, preeclampsia, and gestational diabetes.

The findings of the study, which was supported by the National Institutes of Health, were published in Circulation Research. Obesity has long been recognised as a risk factor for cardiovascular disease and pregnancy difficulties caused by high blood pressure. They didn’t know which factors influenced a person’s cardiovascular disease risk years after pregnancy – obesity or pregnancy problems.

While having adverse pregnancy outcomes was linked with increased cardiovascular disease risks during pregnancy, the complications accounted for a small percentage of increased cardiovascular disease risks in the years following pregnancy for people with obesity.

“We’re finding that certain pregnancy complications are unmasking and then increasing cardiovascular disease risks, such as obesity, that were already present. This study provides insight into potential timing for interventions for people with overweight or obesity who are thinking about pregnancy,” said Victoria L Pemberton, RNC, a study author and researcher in the Division of Cardiovascular Sciences at the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI), part of NIH.

The researchers analysed data collected from the nuMoM2b Heart Health Study of more than 4,200 first-time mothers – about half of whom were overweight or obese. They compared the participants’ pregnancy experience to their health two to seven years later.

They found mothers who were overweight or had obesity during the first trimester of pregnancy had about twice the risk of developing gestational diabetes or having a pregnancy complicated by high blood pressure, compared to participants with normal body weight. These mothers also had increased risks of developing cardiovascular disease risks after pregnancy.

In comparison, pregnancies complicated by high blood pressure explained just 13 per cent of future risks for developing high blood pressure if a person is obese. Likewise, gestational diabetes explained only 10 per cent of future risks for diabetes.

“We want to do everything we can to support a person’s heart health, but especially around the time of pregnancy – before, during, and in early pregnancy,” said Sadiya S Khan, MD, the study’s lead investigator, a preventive cardiologist, and an associate professor of medicine at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, Chicago.

“That includes achieving and maintaining a healthy body weight, knowing your heart health numbers, and finding ways to stay physically active.”

For some complications the researchers found body weight did not factor into risks. For example, people with overweight or obesity did not have increased risks of having a preterm birth or a baby with a low birth weight.

Additionally, researchers found among all participants, those experiencing preterm births had increased risks of having high blood pressure, high blood sugar, or high cholesterol a few years after pregnancy. Having a baby born with a low birth weight wasn’t found to increase risks.

“Looking for ways to support and optimize a person’s cardiovascular health is still of the utmost importance if someone has had an adverse pregnancy outcome,” said Khan.

“However, if we really want to make a difference in improving cardiovascular health and preventing these pregnancy outcomes, we have to shift to the pre-pregnancy and early pregnancy space.”

<h2>Understanding the Anatomy of the Spine</h2>

Before we delve deeper into the aspects of spine health, it's essential to have a basic understanding of the spine's anatomy. The spine, also known as the vertebral column, is a flexible and sturdy structure composed of 33 individual vertebrae, each separated by discs. These vertebrae are categorised into five regions:

1. Cervical Spine: The neck region, consisting of 7 vertebrae (C1-C7).

2. Thoracic Spine: The upper back region, made up of 12 vertebrae (T1-T12).

3. Lumbar Spine: The lower back region, containing 5 vertebrae (L1-L5).

4. Sacral Spine: Fused vertebrae forming the sacrum.

5. Coccygeal Spine: Fused vertebrae forming the coccyx or tailbone.

The spine's primary functions include providing structural support, protecting the spinal cord, allowing for flexibility and movement, and maintaining balance. This complex structure is supported by muscles, ligaments, and tendons, making it crucial to maintain its health.

<h2>Common Spine-Related Issues</h2>

Spine health encompasses a wide range of issues that can affect individuals of all ages and backgrounds. Some common spine-related problems include:

1. Back Pain: Back pain is one of the most prevalent spine-related issues, and it can result from various causes, including muscle strain, injury, poor posture, or medical conditions.

2. Herniated Disc: A herniated disc occurs when the soft inner core of a spinal disc protrudes through the tough exterior, potentially leading to nerve compression and pain.

3. Sciatica: Sciatica is a condition characterized by pain radiating along the sciatic nerve, often caused by a herniated disc or bone spur.

4. Scoliosis: Scoliosis is an abnormal curvature of the spine, often detected in childhood or adolescence, and can lead to pain and discomfort.

5. Spinal Stenosis: Spinal stenosis involves the narrowing of the spinal canal, which can put pressure on the spinal cord and nerves, causing pain and weakness.

6. Osteoporosis: Osteoporosis weakens the bones, making them more susceptible to fractures, including spinal fractures.

7. Spondylolisthesis: This condition occurs when one vertebra slips forward over another, causing pain and spinal instability.

8. Degenerative Disc Disease: As we age, the spinal discs can degenerate, leading to pain and reduced mobility.

9. Ankylosing Spondylitis: Ankylosing spondylitis is a type of inflammatory arthritis that primarily affects the spine, leading to stiffness and discomfort.

10. Spinal Tumors: Tumors that develop within the spinal column can cause pain and neurological symptoms.

<h2>Tips for Better Spine Health</h2>

Now, let's explore some key facts and information to help you maintain a healthy spine:

1. Maintain Good Posture: Proper posture is essential for spine health. Whether you're sitting, standing, or lifting objects, maintaining good posture can help prevent back pain and strain.

2. Regular Exercise: Engaging in regular physical activity, including activities that strengthen the core muscles, can help support the spine and reduce the risk of spine-related issues.

3. Ergonomics: Ensure your work environment, including your chair, desk, and computer setup, is ergonomically designed to reduce strain on your spine.

4. Avoid Prolonged Sitting: Long hours of sitting can put pressure on the spine. Take breaks, stretch, and move around to alleviate stress on the back.

5. Lift Properly: When lifting objects, use your legs and not your back. Bend at the knees and hips to avoid straining the spine.

6. Maintain a Healthy Weight: Excess weight can put additional stress on the spine. Maintaining a healthy weight through diet and exercise can reduce this strain.

7. Quit Smoking: Smoking can reduce blood flow to the spinal discs, leading to premature degeneration. Quitting smoking can improve spine health.

8. Proper Mattress and Pillow: Choose a comfortable mattress and pillow that supports your spine's natural curves. This is particularly important for a good night's sleep.

9. Regular Check-ups: Routine check-ups with a healthcare provider can help detect spine-related issues early, allowing for timely intervention.

10. Hydration: Staying hydrated is essential for maintaining healthy spinal discs. Dehydration can lead to disc degeneration.

11. Proper Nutrition: Consuming a diet rich in calcium, vitamin D, and other essential nutrients can support bone and spine health.

12. Mind-Body Connection: Stress and anxiety can lead to muscle tension and back pain. Practices like yoga and meditation can help alleviate these issues.

13. Early Intervention: If you experience persistent back pain or other spine-related symptoms, seek medical attention early to prevent the issue from worsening.

Lumbar Spine: The lower back region, containing 5 vertebrae (L1-L5). 4. Sacral Spine: Fused vertebrae forming the sacrum. 5. Coccygeal Spine: Fused vertebrae forming the coccyx or tailbone. The spine's primary functions include providing structural support, protecting the spinal cord, allowing for flexibility and movement, and maintaining balance. This complex structure is supported by muscles, ligaments, and tendons, making it crucial to maintain its health. Common Spine-Related Issues Spine health encompasses a wide range of issues that can affect individuals of all ages and backgrounds. Some common spine-related problems include: 1. Back Pain: Back pain is one of the most prevalent spine-related issues, and it can result from various causes, including muscle strain, injury, poor posture, or medical conditions. 2. Herniated Disc: A herniated disc occurs when the soft inner core of a spinal disc protrudes through the tough exterior, potentially leading to nerve compression and pain. 3. Sciatica: Sciatica is a condition characterized by pain radiating along the sciatic nerve, often caused by a herniated disc or bone spur. 4. Scoliosis: Scoliosis is an abnormal curvature of the spine, often detected in childhood or adolescence, and can lead to pain and discomfort. 5. Spinal Stenosis: Spinal stenosis involves the narrowing of the spinal canal, which can put pressure on the spinal cord and nerves, causing pain and weakness. 6. Osteoporosis: Osteoporosis weakens the bones, making them more susceptible to fractures, including spinal fractures. 7. Spondylolisthesis: This condition occurs when one vertebra slips forward over another, causing pain and spinal instability. 8. Degenerative Disc Disease: As we age, the spinal discs can degenerate, leading to pain and reduced mobility. 9. Ankylosing Spondylitis: Ankylosing spondylitis is a type of inflammatory arthritis that primarily affects the spine, leading to stiffness and discomfort. 10. Spinal Tumors: Tumors that develop within the spinal column can cause pain and neurological symptoms. Maintain Good Posture: Proper posture is essential for spine health. Whether you're sitting, standing, or lifting objects, maintaining good posture can help prevent back pain and strain. 2. Regular Exercise: Engaging in regular physical activity, including activities that strengthen the core muscles, can help support the spine and reduce the risk of spine-related issues. 3. Ergonomics: Ensure your work environment, including your chair, desk, and computer setup, is ergonomically designed to reduce strain on your spine. 4. Avoid Prolonged Sitting: Long hours of sitting can put pressure on the spine. Take breaks, stretch, and move around to alleviate stress on the back. 5. Lift Properly: When lifting objects, use your legs and not your back. Bend at the knees and hips to avoid straining the spine. 6. Maintain a Healthy Weight: Excess weight can put additional stress on the spine. Maintaining a healthy weight through diet and exercise can reduce this strain. 7. Quit Smoking: Smoking can reduce blood flow to the spinal discs, leading to premature degeneration. Quitting smoking can improve spine health. 8. Proper Mattress and Pillow: Choose a comfortable mattress and pillow that supports your spine's natural curves. This is particularly important for a good night's sleep. 9. Regular Check-ups: Routine check-ups with a healthcare provider can help detect spine-related issues early, allowing for timely intervention. 10. Hydration: Staying hydrated is essential for maintaining healthy spinal discs. Dehydration can lead to disc degeneration. 11. Proper Nutrition: Consuming a diet rich in calcium, vitamin D, and other essential nutrients can support bone and spine health. 12. Mind-Body Connection: Stress and anxiety can lead to muscle tension and back pain. Practices like yoga and meditation can help alleviate these issues. 13. Early Intervention: If you experience persistent back pain or other spine-related symptoms, seek medical attention early to prevent the issue from worsening. They say absence makes the heart grow fonder, but is it actually true? In today’s fast-paced world, absence makes both of you stressed out, and it indeed takes a lot of love – and a lot of effort – to make long-distance relations work.&nbsp;

When the two need to part for a long period of time, this is often caused by one of them moving to a different country. According to global statistics, 18 per cent of the world’s expats originate from India, and as per a recent survey, one-third of young Indians got into long-distance relationships because one of them had to move elsewhere to work or study.

Settling in a new country is always complicated: the necessity to create a new daily routine to master the new ways for most of the habitual activities – from grocery shopping to <a href="https://www.profee.com/send-money/to-india?fromAmount=350&amp;toCurrency=INR&amp;utm_campaign=wionnews&amp;utm_content=ind360&amp;utm_medium=articletxt&amp;utm_source=press">money transfers</a> – is exhausting. Maintaining a healthy relationship when far apart from each other is a true quest that requires effort, patience and optimism from both of the partners.

Long-distance relationships: Is a happy ending even possible?

The festive season is upon us, yet again, and it's time for celebration, joy, and, unfortunately, often extravagant spending. It's easy to get caught up in the exhilaration of vacations and overspending, and you only regret it when the credit card bills begin rolling in. However, things can be different this time. With a few cautious making plans and a dose of financial discipline, you may experience the festivities without breaking the budget.

Speaking to WION, CA Manish Mishra, Virtual CFO and Growth Advisor, has shared some tips to help you spend wisely&nbsp;this festive season. Read on!

<h2>Tips for Wise Spending</h2>

●&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;Create a Budget: Before you begin searching for gifts, making plans for events, or redecorating your own home, create a practical budget. Determine how much funds you can spend without straining your finances. You can allocate specific amounts for gifts, decorations, meals, and leisure. Having a budget will help you avoid impulsive spending.

●&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;Make a Gift List: Instead of buying gifts on a whim, make a list of the people you want to give gifts to and brainstorm ideas for everybody. This way, you could plan your purchases earlier, search for offers, and avoid closing-minute, expensive panic buys. Consider thoughtful, personalised presents that display your care without constantly breaking the bank.

●&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;Take benefits of Sales and Discounts: Watch for sales, reductions, and unique promotions during the festive season. Many retailers offer vast discounts, so plan your purchasing accordingly. However, be careful not to be lured into shopping for belongings you don't want just because they're on sale.

●&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;Set Spending Limits with Loved Ones: Communicating with relatives and buddies about spending limits on gifts is crucial. Discussing this openly can prevent any awkwardness or expectations of extravagant presents. Remember, the holiday season is about spending time together and displaying appreciation, not about the monetary cost of gifts.

●&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;Consider DIY Gifts and Decorations: Get innovative by making presents and decorations all by yourself. Handmade presents may be considerate, unique, and cost much less than save-bought options. You also can involve your circle of relatives in crafting decorations, turning it right into a fun and value-powerful pastime.

●&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;Use Cash or Debit Cards: Consider using cash or debit cards rather than credit cards for your festive purchasing. This way, you may be spending money you genuinely have and may not accumulate credit card debt. If you use a credit card, ensure to pay off the balance in full to avoid hobby expenses.

●&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;Avoid Peer Pressure: Don't succumb to the pressure of keeping up with extravagant celebrations just because buddies or pals are doing it. Everyone's budget of affairs is unique, and staying within your budget is essential. You can create meaningful memories without overspending.

●&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;Track Your Expenses: Keep an eye on your spending during the festive season. Maintain a document of all your purchases and evaluate them on your price range. This will assist you in identifying any overspending early and making essential changes.

Ultimately, the festive season is a time for celebrations and togetherness, but it shouldn't lead to financial stress. By arranging finances, making considerate selections, and prioritising meaningful purchases over materialistic purchases, you could ensure that this&nbsp;festive season isn't only joyous but also financially responsible. You could create lasting memories without breaking the budget with some tips and planning.

Musician-turned-designer Pharrell Williams will hold his second show as creative director for Louis Vuitton in Hong Kong, the brand announced on Tuesday.&nbsp;

Williams will hold a "pre-fall show" for his menswear line on November 30, following his glitzy debut at Paris Fashion Week in June.&nbsp;

It emphasises the importance of Chinese consumers to Louis Vuitton, which said it "found the cultural vibrancy of this island archipelago an ongoing source of inspiration".&nbsp;

Williams succeeded Virgil Abloh, the first black American to helm a major French label until his death from cancer.&nbsp;

The "Happy" singer's appointment was seen as reflecting a broader merging of fashion, hip-hop and pop culture, though it goes against the grain of most recent appointments at big labels such as Gucci and Chloe who have opted for less flashy but technically proficient artisans.&nbsp;

His first show in June saw Paris's historic Pont Neuf bridge painted gold for a celeb-packed party featuring a concert by Jay-Z.

It demonstrated the spending power of the label, which helped boost profits at parent company LVMH by 30 percent to 8.48 billion euros ($9.34 billion) in the first half of the year.&nbsp;

"What it is that I was brought in here to do is to push expansion and growth not only in sales, but in perspective, culturally," Williams told Business of Fashion this week.&nbsp;

World Sight Day, observed annually on the second Thursday of October, serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of good vision and the need for global awareness about eye health. Our eyes are precious, enabling us to perceive the world in all its beauty.

To commemorate this significant day, let's explore 10 essential tips for maintaining good eyesight and ensuring a clearer, brighter future for everyone.

<ol>
	<li>
	Regular Eye Check-ups: Make it a habit to schedule comprehensive eye examinations at least once a year, even if you don't wear glasses. Regular check-ups can help identify potential issues early and prevent severe eye conditions.
	</li>
	<li>
	Balanced Diet: Ensure your diet is rich in essential nutrients like vitamins A, C, and E, as well as minerals such as zinc and selenium. These nutrients support eye health and reduce the risk of age-related macular degeneration.
	</li>
	<li>
	Protective Eyewear: Shield your eyes from harmful sunlight by wearing sunglasses that block 100 per cent&nbsp;of UVA and UVB rays. Safety goggles are essential in environments where there's a risk of eye injury, like construction sites or laboratories.
	</li>
	<li>
	Digital Eye Strain Awareness: Combat digital eye strain by practising the 20-20-20 rule when using digital devices. Every 20 minutes, take a 20-second break to focus on something 20 feet away. This reduces the strain caused by prolonged screen time.
	</li>
	<li>
	Quit Smoking: Smoking is associated with cataracts, macular degeneration, and optic nerve damage. Quitting not only benefits your overall health but also significantly reduces the risk of vision-related problems.
	</li>
	<li>
	Manage Health Conditions: Control health conditions like diabetes and hypertension, which can lead to diabetic retinopathy and hypertensive retinopathy, both of which can cause vision impairment.
	</li>
	<li>
	Stay Hydrated: Maintain proper hydration to ensure good circulation, including to the eyes. Consume an adequate amount of water daily to maintain optimal eye health.
	</li>
	<li>
	Eye-Friendly Workplace: If you spend extended hours on a computer, ensure proper lighting and adjust your screen's position to minimise glare. An ergonomic chair and desk setup can also reduce eye strain.
	</li>
	<li>
	Adequate Sleep: Quality sleep allows your eyes to rest and rejuvenate. Lack of sleep can lead to dry eyes, blurred vision, and other eye discomforts.
	</li>
	<li>
	Know Your Family History: Some eye conditions, such as glaucoma and macular degeneration, have a genetic component. Understanding your family history can help you and your eye care professional monitor your eye health more effectively.
	</li>
</ol>

These nutrients support eye health and reduce the risk of age-related macular degeneration. Protective Eyewear: Shield your eyes from harmful sunlight by wearing sunglasses that block 100 per cent of UVA and UVB rays. Safety goggles are essential in environments where there's a risk of eye injury, like construction sites or laboratories. Digital Eye Strain Awareness: Combat digital eye strain by practising the 20-20-20 rule when using digital devices. Every 20 minutes, take a 20-second break to focus on something 20 feet away. This reduces the strain caused by prolonged screen time. Quit Smoking: Smoking is associated with cataracts, macular degeneration, and optic nerve damage. Quitting not only benefits your overall health but also significantly reduces the risk of vision-related problems. Manage Health Conditions: Control health conditions like diabetes and hypertension, which can lead to diabetic retinopathy and hypertensive retinopathy, both of which can cause vision impairment. Stay Hydrated: Maintain proper hydration to ensure good circulation, including to the eyes. Consume an adequate amount of water daily to maintain optimal eye health. Eye-Friendly Workplace: If you spend extended hours on a computer, ensure proper lighting and adjust your screen's position to minimise glare. An ergonomic chair and desk setup can also reduce eye strain. Adequate Sleep: Quality sleep allows your eyes to rest and rejuvenate. Lack of sleep can lead to dry eyes, blurred vision, and other eye discomforts. Know Your Family History: Some eye conditions, such as glaucoma and macular degeneration, have a genetic component. Understanding your family history can help you and your eye care professional monitor your eye health more effectively. Infertility is not only a matter of biological function, but also a complex emotional journey. The desire to have children is a fundamental aspect of human existence, and infertility is a deeply distressing experience that affects millions of couples worldwide. It's a condition that can have a profound impact on a couple's mental health, often leading to feelings of sadness, frustration, and despair.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), infertility affects approximately 10-15 per cent of couples globally, making it a significant global health concern, underscoring the importance of addressing the mental health aspects of infertility.&nbsp;

Infertility can have numerous causes, including hormonal imbalances, structural issues in the reproductive system, genetic factors, and lifestyle factors such as smoking or obesity. Identifying the root cause can be a demanding process, as it may require extensive medical testing and invasive procedures, adding to the couple's distress. The emotional toll of infertility can manifest in various ways. Couples may experience a range of symptoms, including:

•&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;A pervasive feeling of sadness, hopelessness, and despair.

•&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;Persistent worry about fertility treatments, the future, and the impact on their relationship which can lead to anxiety disorders.

•&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;The relentless pressure of medical procedures, financial burdens, and the uncertainty of outcomes can lead to chronic stress, which can have physical and emotional consequences.

•&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;Couples may blame themselves or each other for their infertility, leading to feelings of guilt and shame, even though infertility is often due to factors beyond their control.

•&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;Many couples struggling with infertility isolate themselves from social situations to evade uncomfortable questions or reminders of their struggle, leading to further feelings of loneliness and despair.

Addressing the mental health aspects of infertility is crucial to providing comprehensive care for couples facing this challenging journey. Fortunately, there has been a growing recognition of the mental health challenges associated with infertility. More healthcare professionals are integrating psychological support into infertility treatments. Counselling, support groups, and therapy options are more widely available to couples struggling with infertility.

World Mental Health Day 2023: 10 tips for couples dealing with infertility to boost their mental health

Breast cancer is no longer solely an affliction of the elderly or those over 40. A surprising shift has occurred, with an increasing number of younger women in their 20s and&nbsp;30s being diagnosed with breast cancer. This trend is not confined to India; it is a global concern that presents new challenges in diagnosis, treatment, and post-treatment care for this age group.

Traditionally,&nbsp;guidelines have recommended breast cancer screening starting at age 40. However, the current landscape demands a reassessment of our approach to detection and management for younger populations.

The belief that cancer is an unlikely cause of health issues in younger age groups often leads to delayed diagnoses, as both patients and physicians may not consider it a possibility.

In many cases, physicians tend to consider more common diagnoses when patients present with breast lumps, often not even contemplating cancer.

It is imperative that we shift our mindset and maintain a higher level of suspicion when individuals, especially young women, present with breast lumps.

Thorough evaluation, including clinical examination, imaging, and possibly histopathological tests, should be pursued before determining the need for surveillance or further treatment.

"Breast cancer cases in younger populations tend to be diagnosed at later stages and exhibit less favourable molecular characteristics, often being hormone receptor-negative and HER2-positive, making them more aggressive and placing them in a less favourable prognosis group. Additionally, fertility considerations become crucial, particularly as women are marrying later, having fewer children, and breastfeeding less. Preserving fertility options like oocyte or embryo preservation should be discussed, empowering patients to make informed decisions about their future," says&nbsp;Dr Sushruta Mysore Shankar, Consultant Breast Surgery and Surgical Oncology, Sparsh Hospital.

It's vital to emphasise that breast cancer is a concern for women of all ages, including adolescents and teenagers. Raising awareness and understanding of breast cancer from a young age equips individuals to discuss their health with healthcare professionals confidently.&nbsp;

"Starting at age 20, monthly breast self-examinations are essential. At 40, annual mammograms become mandatory. In the interim, a clinical examination by a healthcare provider every three years is crucial because not all issues are detectable through self-examination. Clinicians are often better equipped to identify problems that patients might overlook, and additional tools like ultrasounds can enhance detection rates. Early detection remains the most effective tool we have for successful breast cancer treatment," adds the medical expert.

As we observe Breast Cancer Awareness Month in the month of October, let us recognise that breast cancer affects women of all ages and commit to better equipping young women with the knowledge and tools they need to protect their health.

Breast cancer in 30s and 40s: What young women should be aware of | Breast Cancer Awareness Month

When you don't answer calls when your phone is ringing, do you feel anxiety or stress? Do you worry about who is calling you or what you are going to talk? If you experience these things, then the chances are that you could be suffering from what is known as phone anxiety!

World Mental Health Day: Phone anxiety is a real problem

Cancer stands as one of the top four non-communicable diseases contributing significantly to India's escalating health and socio-economic challenges. Data reveals that in 2020, an estimated 2.3 million cases of female breast cancer were diagnosed globally, and about 685,000 women died from the disease.&nbsp; Alarming as this may be, what's even more concerning is the doubling of cancer incidence and mortality in India between 1990 and 2016.&nbsp;

While cervical cancer long held the title as the predominant cancer among Indian women, breast cancer has surged ahead in recent decades, now ranking as the most common cancer in India and globally. This rapid rise is attributed to increasing urbanisation and lifestyle changes, evident in higher incidence rates in major metropolitan areas compared to rural regions.

It may come as a surprise that while breast cancer incidence in India is lower than in the West, the number of deaths among Indian women is higher. This stark contrast raises concern, with over 50 per cent of Indian patients diagnosed in advanced stages of the disease, in contrast to Western nations where less than 10 per cent are at an advanced stage upon diagnosis. This delay in seeking medical attention can be attributed to the absence of nationwide screening programs and a general lack of awareness.

The adage "Early detection saves lives" holds particularly true for breast cancer. When detected early and confined to the breast, the 5-year relative survival rate soars to an encouraging 99 per cent. This underscores the urgent need to boost cancer education and awareness in society, with the key to early detection lying in cancer screening.

Mammograms&nbsp;and X-ray examinations of the breast&nbsp;serve as the gold standard for breast cancer screening. Women above 40 years are encouraged to undergo annual mammograms, while those under 40 should perform monthly self-breast examinations and consult their healthcare provider for a yearly clinical breast examination. Individuals with a family history of cancer or genetic predisposition should consult breast health specialists for personalised screening and genetic counselling.

Breast self-examination (SBE) is a valuable tool for women of all ages. Being aware of changes in breast appearance or texture can help detect abnormalities early. Signs of breast cancer may include new lumps, changes in nipple appearance, discharge, or skin texture. Performing SBE monthly is recommended.

It's essential to note that men, although at lower risk, can also develop breast cancer. Hence, breast self-awareness and knowledge are crucial for everyone.

Early detection not only increases survival chances but also reduces the need for radical treatments. Breast conservation, a procedure that removes the cancerous lump while preserving the breast's appearance, has become the gold standard for early-stage breast cancer. Oncoplastic surgery techniques further enhance cosmetic outcomes and patient satisfaction. Advances in radiation technology and targeted therapies have improved survival and quality of life.

Awareness is key to promoting breast conservation, breast reconstruction, and less aggressive treatments. which is why&nbsp;October is observed as Breast Cancer Awareness Month globally.

Importance of early detection in breast cancer | Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Breast cancer during pregnancy, known as pregnancy-associated breast cancer (PABC), presents formidable diagnostic hurdles. PABC can happen during pregnancy or within a year following childbirth. The conundrum arises because pregnant women's breasts are actively preparing for lactation, causing engorgement. This makes it difficult for women to feel any lumps, and doctors may not suspect cancer due to the patient's young age and other pregnancy-related changes. As a result, cancer is often detected at later stages when it's more advanced and aggressive. Alarmingly, PABC tumours are more likely to be hormone receptor negative, further complicating prognosis.

Speaking exclusively to WION,&nbsp;Dr Sushruta Mysore Shankar, consultant in Breast Surgery and Surgical Oncology at SPARSH Hospital, sheds light on the intricacies of this delicate situation.

<h2>How does this affect the mother and the unborn child?</h2>

The timing of breast cancer diagnosis during pregnancy has significant implications for both the mother and the unborn child. "If breast cancer is diagnosed in the third trimester, treatment is usually delayed until after childbirth. In some cases, the delivery may be expedited once the baby is mature enough, allowing the mother to receive treatment sooner," says&nbsp;Dr Sushruta.

"However, if breast cancer is detected in the first trimester, there are challenges. Surgery is an option, but breast-conserving surgery (lumpectomy) is limited because it requires radiation therapy, which is unsafe during pregnancy. Therefore, removal of the breast (modified radical mastectomy) may be necessary in the first trimester. Chemotherapy is also contraindicated in the first trimester due to its potential harm to the fetus, but it can be administered safely in the second trimester," adds the medical expert.

"Surgery can be performed in the first and second trimesters, and in the third trimester, it can be combined with chemotherapy and radiation if needed. However, some chemotherapy drugs carry risks of preterm delivery, low birth weight, and intrauterine growth retardation, requiring careful monitoring during pregnancy."

<h2>Other risk factors</h2>

There's a risk of leukopenia (low white blood cell count) during chemotherapy, which affects both the mother and the unborn child.

Chemotherapy is not recommended after 35 weeks of gestation because leukopenia can occur up to three weeks after treatment, coinciding with the delivery period.

Leukopenic newborns are vulnerable to infections. Cesarean sections also pose infection risks for the mother. Frequent ultrasound checks are needed for pregnant patients on chemotherapy due to potential low birth weight or growth issues.

Radiation is strictly avoided during pregnancy and lactation. It's only considered once lactation is complete and when the patient chooses not to continue breastfeeding. Otherwise, radiation is not used during pregnancy or lactation to protect the unborn child's health.

<h2>Diagnosis</h2>

During the diagnostic phase of breast cancer in pregnancy, standard staging procedures are crucial. Typically, breast cancer can spread to the lungs, liver, and bones, requiring a PET CT scan for comprehensive evaluation. However, a PET CT scan is not safe during pregnancy. Instead, we use alternative methods: a chest X-ray with abdominal shielding for the chest, an abdominal ultrasound for liver evaluation, and an MRI for suspected bone involvement. These tests help doctors determine the cancer stage accurately, allowing them&nbsp;to customise the treatment plan for each patient's specific needs.

Diagnosis During the diagnostic phase of breast cancer in pregnancy, standard staging procedures are crucial. These tests help doctors determine the cancer stage accurately, allowing them to customise the treatment plan for each patient's specific needs.
