British novelist David Lodge, who was shortlisted for the Booker Prize twice, has died at the age of 89, his publisher said on Friday.

The English author was best known for "Small World" and "Nice Work", which were nominated for the prestigious literary award in the 1980s.

He died "peacefully" on New Year's Day, Penguin Random House said, without giving a cause of death.

As a kid, I was terrified of heights so as a 26 year old, I did the next best thing - enrolled in a paragliding school- to get my APPI 1 license and get certified to fly. I came across them through a friend from Qatar. Little had I imagined that Kamshet, around 2 hours away from Mumbai airport, could be a base where paragliders travel from across countries like Kenya, Malaysia, England, South Africa, France and America to fly.

“While paragliding is popular in Europe, it is still a growing sport in India. There has been keen interest from diverse age groups. We have parents of 26 year olds and students as young as 16 who are attempting this sport. It is a great community”, says Sunith Rao, from the leadership at Fly Nirvana- the school which taught me paraglide. Rao is soon going to Columbia for the Paragliding World Cup Super Final.

Initially, I was anxious since paragliding is an extreme adventure sport and requires the glider to be in great condition. The pilot also must have the right attitude to fly. I was briefed about top safety standards in the industry by my instructor, I was sure I was in good hands. I was geared for the 7 day program and was looking forward to spending time in the sky. We headed to Shinde hill, one of the most popular sites in Kamshet for beginners - for ground training where we learned to launch the paraglider, keep the glider over our head, correct direction and listen to radio instructions. Day 2 and day 3 were all about learning to run down the slope with our gliders. On day 4, my first solo flight was from Shelar hill, a serene hill with breathtaking sunset views over the hill. It was perfect for paragliding.

“Safety is of paramount importance in any extreme sport. It is important for people to feel like they belong within the sport and feel patient during their initial flights. The instructor’s attitude can make or break the student”, says Ravi, the lead instructor at Fly Nirvana. While I got radio instructions from the ever calm and patient Ravi sir from the ground, I flew in the sky with ease, gently turning and watching the sunset views. As I landed, I almost cried. I couldn’t believe that from being someone who was afraid of heights once upon a time, I had learned to soar in the sky. I hugged my instructor - I couldn’t have been more grateful. I had earned my elementary pilot certification. It was an experience like no other.

The base where I was staying in Kamshet is called Native Place. It’s a serene hostel and private room property, walking distance away from a lake offering a stay like it’s in the middle of the wild. There, I enjoyed delicious home cooked Indian meals. The garlic and chilli paratha deserves a special mention. The jam at Native Place was made in house, from a plant called rosella.

For my Intermediate Pilot course, we learned kiting and engaged in more flights. The flying time increased, and we soared near the mountain too. I flew from the highest point in Kamshet - Tower Hill. I could see the buildings below me and the Mumbai - Pune highway too. I felt like a bird. It was also exhilarating to see other pilots who learned flying it me feel empowered. I remember the simulator sessions at the base for 3 days which helped me visualise my flights better.

“Our students often express that they come back from their training experience feeling rejuvenated and restored. As they begin Flying more frequently their horizons open and they realise the more they learn they realise how much more there is to learn which can be humbling yet exciting. It always feels great to see students who get motivated about the sport and keep trying to better their skills and achieve more.” says Sunith Rao.

In 2024, I travelled across over 10 countries. However, the 7 days I spent in Kamshet were a key highlight of the year. Kamshet is a small town and I never imagined it would mean so much to me. However, thanks to paragliding - I’ll keep going back.

Lifestyle: Discover how designer Anavila Mishra revolutionised Indian fashion by introducing linen sarees, viewing the iconic nine-yard garment as an emotional cultural legacy.

As someone who is credited for introducing linen sarees into the Indian fashion space, designer Anavila Mishra believes the nine-yard garment is like an emotion embedded in our genetic makeup, and something that has beautifully and effortlessly kept up with the changing times. "The saree is a piece of textile deeply immersed in our culture and has evolved through various external influences over time. Every generation has reinterpreted the sari according to its environment and needs. It’s a blank canvas for artistic expression," says Anavila, in an exclusive interview with WION. From having a structured and feminine appeal to turning into a more casual and easy pick over time, the fashion connoisseur also sheds light on the evolution and the democratic nature of sarees. "The saree is an extremely democratic garment; it lends itself beautifully to any body size and shape. Depending on how we style it, it can be worn on any occasion and at any time of the day. The flexibility it provides and the deep-rooted relationship it has within our cultural connotations are what make this garment open to interpretation and engagement, helping it evolve over time and never go out of fashion," she explains. View this post on Instagram A post shared by anavila (@anavila_m) Through changes in material, weaving techniques, ornamentation, visual language and drapery, the saree has taken many forms and has been linked to the identity of India on a global platform. "Not only are they a garment that originates from India, but the femininity and grace of the sari have allured fashion designers, artists, and style icons across the globe. Many have reinterpreted the sari in their own voice and design language. Today, sarees are relevant globally, with a World Saree Day dedicated to them," she adds. Anavila's love affair with linen has helped transform the textile into collections of wearable and accessible garments, and the designer says it's incredibly fulfilling to see them become a staple in every sari-wearing woman's wardrobe. View this post on Instagram A post shared by anavila (@anavila_m) "Linen sarees are now accessible across all market segments in the country, and their versatility has made them an integral part of India’s sartorial identity. Whether it’s young girls draping them for farewell parties or women choosing them for festive occasions and professional settings, linen sarees seamlessly blend tradition with contemporary lifestyles," she shares. View this post on Instagram A post shared by anavila (@anavila_m) The style connoisseur is also optimistic about the future of linen. "As linen sarees continue to gain prominence, the next generation will grow up seeing them as an essential, timeless piece in Indian fashion. While personal aesthetics may vary, linen sarees have firmly secured their place in the wardrobe legacy," she explains. For Anavila, the biggest takeaway from 2024 was to be more meaningful and respect the nature. As for the new year, the fashion couturier predicts the reign of local regional styles in 2025. "As the new generation of youth dives deep into discovering their cultural roots, you will see traditional sari styles being reinterpreted and reimagined for the future," she says, adding, "With the concept of exploring stories that were untold or narratives that have been rewritten, people are learning about and embracing their culture— whether it's pre-colonial drapes or revived techniques. The sari is also experiencing this change with regional voices and traditional craftsmanship gaining prominence, and this is growing for the better."

The list honors four victims of the Horizon IT scandal, acknowledging their fight for justice after wrongful convictions, alongside notable public figures.

King Charles III announced awards for actors Stephen Fry and Carey Mulligan, as well as victims of Britain's Post Office scandal in the country's traditional New Year's Honours on Tuesday. London Mayor Sadiq Khan joined UK television icon and writer Fry, 67, and former England football manager Gareth Southgate in being knighted in the latest list. Fry, best known for playing his idol Oscar Wilde in the 1997 movie "Wilde" and hit British television comedy "Blackadder" was recognised for services to mental health awareness, the environment and to charity. Fry, who has a form of bipolar disorder, has spoken openly about his struggles with manic depression. "When you are recognised it does make you feel a bit 'crikey', but I think the most emotional thing is that when I think of my childhood, and my dreadful unhappiness and misery and stupidity, and everything that led to so many failures as a child," Fry added. Khan, one Britain's most high-profile Asian-origin politicians, was honoured for political and public service. The 54-year-old has led the UK capital since 2016 and earlier this year became the first London mayor to win a third term. Four victims of the Horizon IT scandal, in which hundreds of sub-postmasters were wrongly convicted of fraud, theft and false accounting because of faulty software, were also honoured. Lee Castleton, Jo Hamilton, Christopher Head and Seema Misra were recognised with an Order of the British Empire (OBE) for their work campaigning for justice. The previous Conservative government unveiled legislation in March to exonerate those wrongly prosecuted and compensate them after a TV drama renewed focus on their plight. The king or other leading members of the royal family hand out the awards at ceremonies during the year. "Each and every day, ordinary people go out and do extraordinary things for their communities," said Prime Minister Keir Starmer. "The New Year Honours List celebrates more of these unsung heroes, and I thank them for their incredible contribution," he added. Mulligan received an award as a Commander of the British Empire (CBE) while Nobel Prize-winning novelist Kazuo Ishiguro was made a Companion of Honour for services to literature. Southgate was knighted for services to football after leading England to the finals of the past two European Championships, as well as to the 2018 World Cup semi-final. His eight-year reign ended without a major trophy after England's 2-1 defeat to Spain in July's European final. Also honoured were several British athletes who competed in the Paris Olympics this summer, including 800-metre gold medallist Keely Hodgkinson and two-time Olympic mountain bike champion Tom Pidcock. The king also personally honoured two of his medical staff after he was diagnosed with cancer in February. His GP Douglas Glass, who was also attending Queen Elizabeth II at her death in Balmoral in September 2022, and his consultant physician Richard Leach were both awarded with levels of the Royal Victorian Order.
If you thought you were doing more bad than good by indulging in your favourite hot beverage daily? Well, then you’re wrong. In a new study by the American Cancer Society, researchers found that people who drink either tea or coffee have a slightly lower risk of head and neck cancer.
The study found that those who drank less than four cups of caffeinated coffee daily and less than a cup of tea had a 17% and 9% lower chance of developing head or neck cancer overall.

If you thought you were doing more bad than good by indulging in your favourite hot beverage daily? Well, then you’re wrong. In a new study by the American Cancer Society, researchers found that people who drink either tea or coffee have a slightly lower risk of head and neck cancer. It is however unclear if both tea or coffee was actually lowering the risk directly.

The data was examined from 14 individual studies. Scientists examined over 9,500 people with head and neck cancers and over 15,00 people without — from the International Head and Neck Cancer Epidemiology consortium for their research.

What does the study suggest?

The study found that those who drank less than four cups of caffeinated coffee daily and less than a cup of tea had a 17% and 9% lower chance of developing head or neck cancer overall.

The study also noted that those who drank coffee had a lower chance of developing oral cavity and oropharyngeal cancers which basically happen in the middle part of the throat, according to Yale Medicine.

Meanwhile, those who drank less than a cup of tea had a lower chance of developing hypopharyngeal cancer which develops in the bottom part of the throat, per John Hopkins Medicine.

Guardian reported, senior author of the study, Dr. Yuan-Chin Amy Lee of Huntsman Cancer Institute and the University of Utah School of Medicine said, “While there has been prior research on coffee and tea consumption and reduced risk of cancer, this study highlighted their varying effects with different subsites of head and neck cancer including the observation that even decaffeinated coffee had some positive impact.”

But this was possible only if they limited the quantity of tea and coffee consumed. The report added that drinking more than a cup of tea daily would have adverse effects on the body and was associated with a higher chance of getting laryngeal cancer — which forms in the larynx, the part of the throat that controls the vocal cords, according to the National Cancer Institute (NCI).

There could be however other factors involved in this like the kind of tea consumed and how it was prepared. There could be other factors that can affect the outcome which could have affected the overall study.

Dating apps like Tinder, Bumble and Hinge have not quite transformed into apps which can lead to matrimony. As the name ‘dating app’ suggests, the apps are intended towards dating. “Most dating apps might not even lead to dating but translate simply to one night stands. Hence, there is a need for other apps for serious dating that leads to marriage” says Reena Motiwala, 26, resident of Mumbai.

“Young adults increasingly prefer to get to know their partner before committing to marriage. Dating apps have created a cultural shift in the process of marriage” says Tania Sondhi, co-founder of the matrimonial app MatchMe.

MatchMe is an invite-only application which ensures strict screening before adding anyone to the app. “Every applicant undergoes a screening process which includes a video call with both co-founders of the app. Here we ensure the network remains exclusive and has like minded individuals. We also conduct psychometric testing to align user’s values, interests and lifestyle” says Mishi Mehta the co-founder of MatchMe.

Psychometric tools have been a scientifically backed method to access a person’s nature, core beliefs and personality. Conducting psychometric tests to match people for marriage might be the future of the wedding matchmaker industry. There was certainly a gap in the process of wedding matchmaking where people were not able to verify how their match suggestion had been picked. They simply called it luck or destiny. This is depicted by the Netflix show Indian Matchmaking. However, with psychometric testing, it is possible to suggest matches to people based on personality, future outlook and commonality of goals.

There are an overwhelming number of options people can choose from on dating apps like Bumble, Hinge and Tinder. This causes confusion in the process of finding a partner and leads to people using the app like an online shopping cart carousel. “Someone I was talking to for five months on Tinder ghosted me suddenly. Later, my friends told me he might have been seeing multiple partners at the same time”, says Jhanvi Mehta, 23, college student at DU.

“Suggesting limited matches on the app ensures people put serious consideration into exploring the match, also that there is less decision fatigue and superficial interactions” says Tania Sondhi.

There is a significant mindset shift in dating and marriage in India. This has come from the financial freedom both men and women have in a relationship.”Marriage is a traditional milestone that families look forward to. However, individuals in India are also more open to casual relationships. This is where we see traditions and modernity blend in together.” says Mehta.

“Though I had significant casual relationships in the past, the sort of girl my family expected me to marry was quite different. I later realised the sort of girl I wanted to marry was also different from what my family wanted yet not like the girls I dated”, reflects Harsh Singh, 28, a resident of Jaipur. It is interesting to observe how marriage involves significant thought about the personality of the individuals who are getting married. It is key to place them at a forefront. While traditionally, parents have been key decision-makers in everything to do with marriage, putting individuals are the forefront is necessary.

While India has a steadily increasing divorce rate, there is also a small percentage of people who are opting out of marriage altogether. However, this could also be because people have not found the right match yet. “Individuals are taking longer to say yes to potential partners. They are also spending more time to find themselves, this makes the process of finding a partner more challenging.” says Sondhi.

Matrimonial apps on the market also have a significant number of scams. People asking for dowry and parents posing as the individual looking to get married. Amidst this noise, the personal touch is lost and people are often left wondering how to connect with the Individual at a deeper level. Screening in apps ensures people are well educated, parents' expectations are not related to financials, both parties are financially secure and other points along the lines.

While dating has transformed with dating apps, matrimony is also transforming with matchmaking apps that are launching. It would be fascinating to see what the future of this space holds.

King Charles III on Friday joked that he was "still alive" as he met east London community members at the end of a year in which the British monarch has battled cancer.

King Charles III on Friday joked that he was "still alive" as he met east London community members at the end of a year in which the British monarch has battled cancer. The quip, which came after a member of the public asked Charles how he was, followed reports on Friday that the 76-year-old sovereign will continue his cancer treatment into next year. Buckingham Palace sources told Sky News that "his treatment has been moving in a positive direction and as a managed condition the treatment cycle will continue into next year". The palace announced in February that Charles had been diagnosed with an undisclosed cancer and would withdraw from public life to undergo treatment. The following month, his daughter-in-law Catherine, Princess of Wales, 42, revealed that she too had been diagnosed with cancer and was undergoing chemotherapy. Charles returned to work within two and a half months and has gradually ramped up his duties during the rest of the year, including making several foreign trips. Friday's event, which saw Charles and Queen Camilla visit Waltham Forest in the east of the British capital to celebrate community cohesion, is their final public engagement before they begin their Christmas break. The couple will be joined by other senior royals for their annual festive gathering at the family's Sandringham estate in Norfolk, eastern England (This story has been published from a news agency feed with minimal edits to adhere to WION's style guide. It has been a difficult year for Prince William and Kate Middleton and their family amid Kate's cancer treatment. But the royal couple are moving past the difficulties this holiday season together. On Thursday, the couple shared their family Christmas card on social media—an annual ritual they have been observing ever since they married in 2012. On their official Instagram page, a short video showed the card sitting on a table in front of a Christmas tree, with digital snow falling. The photo on the card features the Prince and Princess of Wales with their three children, Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis. Princess Kate attends Remembrance Day event in return to public duties "Wishing you a very Happy Christmas and New Year," the message inside read.
2024 was undoubtedly a nightmare for allergy sufferers. Climate change has led to unpredictable temperatures and smoke-filled cities, pushing allergy seasons to new extremes.

Let's analyse why 2024 was a perfect storm for allergies and what is next.

How does climate change fuel allergy seasons?

Climate change is reshaping and changing the allergy seasons worldwide. The ideal condition for plants to generate more pollen is created by rising temperatures and increased carbon dioxide levels.

Also read | 11 Indians die from carbon monoxide poisoning at Georgia’s Gudauri mountain resort, probe underway

Recent research indicates that certain allergic plants, such as ragweed, are now releasing pollen for much longer periods, which makes those sensitive to it suffer for a longer time.

Record-breaking temperatures and their impact on allergies

Extreme hot summers have been recorded for the last few years, with very huge consequences for allergic patients. The year 2024 is one of the warmest years on record, with temperatures reaching extreme highs on the globe. These extreme temperatures have thereby hastened the growth of plants, particularly due to the heat island effect in urban areas.

Additionally, dry landscapes caused by high temperatures made it easier for dust and pollen to fly into the atmosphere. All allergy patients claimed that they experienced worse symptoms, from watery eyes to asthma attacks, due to the extended exposure.

A trigger for allergens: Unpredictable weather patterns

Except for the temperature, 2024 welcomed a series of storms and dry spells that did a lot to disturb the entire ecosystem with sudden floods of allergens. Flooding left a pool of stale water and debris of dead plants around which thrived mold spores.

Meanwhile, dry and windy conditions spread allergens over larger areas. Nandini, a 22-year-old, says, "In November, my allergies were relentless. The rise in pollution made my health even worse. I could not escape the mold inside or the pollen outside."

Air pollution and it's role in aggravating allergies

In November 2020, the maximum AQI reported was 518. In 2021 November, the maximum reached 700. In 2022, it was 555, and 528 in 2023. But the highest was reported in November 2024, when the AQI reached a record high of 795.

Numbers are telling a death story. On Diwali 2024, Delhi recorded its 24-hour average AQI as 330, higher compared to previous years, and in fact, the most polluted Diwali in the last three years.

And it didn't stop there. November 2024 saw AQI levels consistently reach hazardous levels. Hospitals were overwhelmed by patients with pollution-related illnesses, and many residents, especially those having pre-existing respiratory conditions, had a hard time breathing.

On November 14, GRAP Stage 3 was activated, which wasn't put into the more severe Stage 4 restrictions until AQI increased to 400 on November 18.

25-year-old Palak says, “My allergies turned into constant coughing and sneezing, even air purifiers didn’t help. My skin also suffered a lot.”

Mehar, an asthma patient, said, "The hazardous air of 2024 unleashed a hell for my allergy. Cough, sneezing, and congestion were like a never-ending thing."

Why allergy seasons are getting longer every year

Climate change makes pollen seasons start earlier and last longer. In some regions, pollen counts were observed in November 2024, a month that is typically free of allergens.

Scientists attributed this shift to warmer winters and frosts that delay the plants' dormancy, allowing them to continue producing allergens. If left unchecked, this trend could indicate nearly year-round allergy seasons in the coming decades.

Asthma rise: A silent crisis of 2024

Allergies and asthma go hand-in-hand, and it is one of the years in which there was an increase in asthma attacks. This time, with pollen, pollution, and smoke all contributing factors, it was experienced by those who never had one. Experts say this will continue unless climate change is stopped

The connection between climate change and worsening allergies is no longer a distant concern. This is a reality we are living by. 2024 has shown us that inaction costs us not just melting glaciers and increasing sea levels, but also our health that we are losing, the air we breathe, and the lives that are affected by seemingly insignificant things like allergies.

The question now is no longer how are we adapting, but how far are we willing to protect ourselves and our coming generations. Addressing the situation is not just about saving the country or planet, it is saving our health, ourselves, and where every breath feels like a battle we have to fight for.

So, should we act, or will we let the seasons grow longer, the air grow heavier, and the suffering worsen? The choice is ours, but the clock is ticking.

Air pollution and it's role in aggravating allergies In November 2020, the maximum AQI reported was 518. My skin also suffered a lot.” Mehar, an asthma patient, said, "The hazardous air of 2024 unleashed a hell for my allergy. Cough, sneezing, and congestion were like a never-ending thing." Why allergy seasons are getting longer every year Climate change makes pollen seasons start earlier and last longer. Asthma rise: A silent crisis of 2024 Allergies and asthma go hand-in-hand, and it is one of the years in which there was an increase in asthma attacks. This time, with pollen, pollution, and smoke all contributing factors, it was experienced by those who never had one. Experts say this will continue unless climate change is stopped The connection between climate change and worsening allergies is no longer a distant concern. Climate change and allergies: Why 2024 was worse for allergy sufferers

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are spreading holiday cheer as they released their Holiday Card for the year featuring their family of two babies and dogs. The holiday card features their two children, Princess Lillibet and Prince Archie as they run towards their parents. The photo shows them enjoying their family time together while their faces don’t face the photographer.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex dropped the holiday card on December 16.

Lillibet and Archie have grown up in new holiday card 2024

It’s a rare sight, most would agree since Harry and Meghan make conscious decisions of not letting paparazzi get hold of the faces of their kids. The kids are usually guarded from the cameras. We can see Lillibet growing taller with her red hair flowing as she runs towards her father in the picture. Harry looks involved.

"On behalf of the office of Prince Harry and Meghan, The Duke and Duchess of Sussex, Archewell Productions and Archewell Foundation," the card's message said on a deep green background. The montage featured five other shots of Prince Harry, 40, and Meghan, 43, during their trips to Nigeria and Colombia this year. "We wish you a very happy holiday season and a joyful new year."
