Celebrity friends of Peter Scolari are paying tribute to the late actor after he died following a two-year long battle with cancer. On Friday, Scolari breathed his last aged 66. Bob Newhart, who co-starred with Scolari on 'Newhart' from 1984 to 1990, was one of the many who shared interesting anecdotes from their time together. "I knew that Peter was sick, but his death still comes as a great shock. We were friends and colleagues for over 40 years. Julia and Peter, as a vacuous couple (Michael and Stephanie), were an essential part of the success of Newhart. In life, he was a fantastic person, and it was a joy to work together. He will be sorely missed and his passing at 66 is much too early," he was quoted as saying by a news website. You had lived enough life to know that a TV show was just a TV show, but also to appreciate just what it meant to be allowed to play pretend for a living- and you never let us forget that this job was a privilege. I remember when you came back from doing a production of the Music Man somewhere- the theater had basically been a barn, there had been no WiFi and you had no understudy- and you were as grateful and delighted as you were when you were nominated for an Emmy," wrote Lena Dunham. "You bragged nonstop about your kids," Dunham continued. "You had the best stories- like when you did Circus of the Stars and 'that’s when I learned to walk a tightrope, there’s not much to it'- and when we told you that you would be coming out of the closet on the show you said 'thank you, you can trust me with this.' Becky Ann and I loved every second of playing your family and I couldn’t have been raised up by a better TV 'papa.' Thank you, Scolari, for every chat between set ups, every hug onscreen and off and every 'Oh, Jeez.' We will miss you so much." Peter Scolari: Lena Dunham, Bob Newhart and others pay tribute

Remember that thing W.C. Fields said about never working with children and animals, lest they steal the show? Jack Whitehall isn’t worried, even if that animal is so massive that its size alone fills up the screen.

In “Clifford the Big Red Dog,” Whitehall plays the irresponsible Uncle Casey of Emily Elizabeth (Darby Camp), a bullied sixth grader who pours her love into a bright red puppy, causing it to grow in proportion to the size of her heart. This meant that Whitehall found himself emoting opposite a 10-foot animatronic canine operated by two puppeteers — sometimes inside the dog, sometimes just holding up its rather disconcertingly dismembered head.

A challenge, sure, but he’d had some experience. Whitehall shot “Clifford” (in theaters and on Paramount+ on Nov. 10) shortly after wrapping Disney’s “Jungle Cruise,” where one of his scene partners was a stunt person on all fours in a spotted leotard standing in for Proxima the jaguar.

“I feel like now I’m probably the go-to guy if you want someone to act opposite a CGI animal,” he said. In a call from London, Whitehall shared the things he enjoys when not wrangling a menagerie — a bespoke suit, a meal at the Wolseley — and why when he’s home, he reminds himself to look up. These are edited excerpts from the conversation.

1. The BBC. The joy and the beauty of the BBC is that it provides this incredible service for so many different people. It has something for everyone. It’s such an incredible institution, and it’s always under attack as well, which makes me even more kind of virulent in my defense of it. And it’s got the best news output of any platform in the world. Especially when I come to America, I realize how much I cherish the ability to have this impartial news.

2. Glastonbury Festival. It’s one of my favorite places on the planet. I think it’s the seminal festival experience, and I love that it doesn’t feel that commercial or cynical. There’s a great charitable element running through it. I will always endeavor, no matter where I am in the world, to get back for Glastonbury. Even when I was filming “Clifford,” I managed to somehow wangle my way into getting onto a flight and going back for three days of Glastonbury, and I was just floating. I was ecstatic before, during and after.
3. Bob Newhart’s The Driving Instructor.” This was a recording that my dad played for me when I was younger. It’s so funny, and it also has an added resonance for me because I can’t drive and have had several driving instructors who I think have been pushed into a similar predicament as Bob Newhart’s character in that comedy sketch.

4. Looking up in London. That was a piece of advice I think in an interview I’d seen with Donald Sinden, the actor. He said that when walking through London, people never look up. London has this incredible architecture, but people are always looking down, looking at each other, looking at shop fronts. The thing about London is that you can have a launderette and then look above it, and it’s got this beautiful Regency architecture. But you’ve never really noticed it because we all live our lives at eye level.

5. A Thom Sweeney tailored suit. I love Savile Row. I love wearing a well-cut suit, and I love the kind of fine tailoring that they do exquisitely well. I love going into one of their stores and getting a drink plenty strong in a short glass. Then there’s the sort of theater of it all — and having the suit fitted, and going back in a couple of times and discussing it, taking out the fabrics. I just love the whole ritual of it.

6. Alan Bennett plays. The first time I ever performed comedy onstage was when I put on my own production of “Habeas Corpus” at school with all of my friends. But “The History Boys” is probably the play that I’ve seen the most times. I remember the first time that I watched it — being utterly captivated and amazed that this was an experience that you could have in a theater. Richard Griffiths (who played Douglas Hector, the teacher) was a very important part of my life. He was my godfather. He was my hero. He was part of the reason I ended up becoming a performer.

7. The film scores of John Williams. I have this weird thing where I work out to film scores. When I go to the gym or go for a jog, I find myself slightly tailoring my workouts to the various songs that I’m listening to: speeding up in rhythm to the music from “Jurassic Park” and maybe slightly aping the gait of a dinosaur; getting overexcited when “E.T.” comes on and wanting to lift off as the music crescendos; and then suddenly “Schindler’s List” comes on, and I feel like I need to slow down as a sign of deference.

8. Corbin &amp;amp; King restaurants. Jeremy King and Chris Corbin are like the doyens of the industry in London when it comes to restaurateurs. They started up the legendary Ivy and the Caprice, and then sold those. Then they’ve had this second generation — the Wolseley, the Delaunay and the Colbert — and they’re fantastic. The cuisine in our country has been a little maligned over the years, but I think they are the bench mark of hospitality. The Wolseley is the restaurant that I could eat in for breakfast, lunch and dinner for the rest of my life and be content.

9. Off Menu podcast. It’s such a brilliant premise. It’s these two fantastic comedians, James Acaster and Ed Gamble, walking through a different guest each week and their dream menu. It has such great, beautiful, eccentric British humor. I love food. I love eating out. I obsess about my dream menu quite a lot. And so it’s such a good podcast to me because I get to hear other people do just that.

10. Edinburgh Festival Fringe. It’s where I first saw live stand-up and fell in love with it and realized that that was something that you could do for a living. I went up there every August for several years, and whenever it’s August, I always have this pang of regret that I’m not at the festival. Every comedian I love started there — John Cleese, Rowan Atkinson, Richard Curtis. The only problem is, whenever you go back to Edinburgh and it’s not the festival, it’s never quite as exciting.

Prince Harry's surprise phone call to military veterans amid expedition goes viral

For all those, who are planning for a vacation in Ladakh, here is a small treat. Women's of Ladakh‘s Phyang village have opened their homes for tourists as the way towards empowerment, both socially and financially.&nbsp;

The women in the village, who have long worked unseen as a cook, cleaner and farmworker — and are now finding new confidence as mini-entrepreneurs. As many men are working in the Army or are away from home for months, the women of Phyang, a mountain village about 15 km from Leh with great views of mountains and blue skies, are slowly coming into their own as homestay hosts.

''After all these years of being at home, I feel like I am not even smart enough to talk to people but I think being a host will help me interact with more people, and also help brush up my Hindi'', Tsering Dolker, a 36-year-old host, told PTI.&nbsp;

Tsering, the husband is currently posted as a hawaldar' in Berchok glacier and is home for barely two months in a year. Tsering, has a traditional Ladakhi home, with five rooms, two of which the family has kept. The remaining have been registered on Airbnb.

The opportunity of earning a living by hosting travellers in her home has come as a “convenient” solution to all her problems.

''At this point, we don’t have many money issues because my husband has a good salary. But he will retire in another two years and the cost of our children’s education is only expected to increase. So earning through this homestay will help a huge deal'', she said.

The online travel portal has tied up with non-profit organisation Self Employed Women’s Association of India (SEWA) for Hum Sab Ek, an initiative that is looking at empowering women to become micro-entrepreneurs by helping them turn into homestay hosts.

As part of this SEWA-Airbnb partnership, 10 homes in Phyang village have been listed on the travel portal, and the number is expected to increase in the coming years.

We are proud to extend our partnership with SEWA in Ladakh and help empower local women Hosts on Airbnb to secure their financial independence and bring valuable tourism dollars into their communities.

As part of our broader efforts to help rebuild tourism for the benefit of local communities, we aim to work together with these micro-entrepreneurs to promote sustainable and responsible travel and stays that contribute to resilient local economies and support jobs, said Amanpreet Bajaj, general manager, Airbnb India, Southeast Asia, Hong Kong and Taiwan.

The initiative is critical to the process of empowerment, both social as well as financial, in Phyang village.

In most households here, women are the central figure doing all kinds of jobs, including cooking and cleaning within the homes and farming outside. Their work, much like household work throughout the country, has traditionally gone unrewarded and unrecognised.

But change is afoot and the women, visibly shy and underconfident, are looking at becoming arbiters of their lives and that of their families.
Like Tsering, turning homestay host has opened windows for Tsewang Dolma, whose world came crashing down in 2010 when her husband suddenly passed away. Tsewang, now 50, had spent much of her life being dependent on first her father, then her husband.

When her husband died, she had to fend for herself and her three children, the oldest of whom was only 10 at the time. She monetised the one skill she had cooking but that got her no more than Rs 8,000 a month. Life would have continued in much the same manner had it not been for the SEWA-Airbnb Hum Sab Ek initiative.

“I am really excited about becoming a host. I have worked so hard all my life to earn the bare minimum. It wasn’t easy to earn a living, and take care of three children. But now, I can work from my home, be close to my children and still earn enough,” she said.

Chery Dolker, half Tsewang’s age at 25, has also found a new mission with Hum Sab Ek. A Nepali by birth, Chery was adopted by a Ladakhi couple as a child and, as grateful as she is to them, she has always wanted to make something of herself.

With the family her parents, brother, his wife and child — perpetually caught in a too-many-mouths-to-feed situation, Chery dropped out of school early on to take care of the house. The family has a two-floor house with a lovely garden patch in the front where fruits and vegetables of all kinds are grown. The products sold in the Leh market was the family’s primary source of income.

But becoming a host will change everything, she said optimistically.

The tariff for rooms at these homestays in Phyang is Rs 2,000 per night. These come with all basic room amenities, great views as well as an opportunity for travellers to experience Ladakhi life in its truest form.

The kitchens and dining spaces in these houses are stocked with Ladakhi food, including traditional bread, local fruits such as apricots and seabuckthorn berries, which are also consumed as jams and juices.

Homestays in Phyang come as a welcome addition to the tourism scene in Ladakh which has homestays in popular destinations, including Leh, Nubra Valley, Alchi, Siachen and Pangong.

Phyang is not among the well-known tourist destinations in the Leh-Ladakh region, but being a 20-minute drive from the airport makes it a strategically perfect overnight stopover.

According to Tejas Raval of SEWA, the location of these homestays will allow tourists to have a day of rest to acclimatise to the altitude while having a culturally enriching experience with local families.

From these homestays in Phyang, one can explore some must-visit destinations like the Gurudwara Pathar Sahib, the serene Sangam, the confluence of the Indus and Zanskar rivers, and the much talked about Magnetic hill, before moving on to Leh.

The great thing about the homestays is that they will give you the luxury of resting without having to spend a lot more in hotels. Also, the experience, unlike hotels, would not be impersonal. Tourists can interact with the hosts and know much more about their lives, Raval said.

Similar homestay initiatives for empowering rural women have been created by SEWA and Airbnb in Gujarat, an initiative that they are planning to expand throughout the country.

Leading medical groups have declared a national emergency in child and adolescent mental health triggered by prolonged isolation, uncertainty and grief during the coronavirus pandemic.

In a joint statement issued Tuesday, the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and the Children’s Hospital Association said the coronavirus pandemic worsened an already existing mental health crisis among children and teens.

Inequities resulting from structural racism contributed to disproportionate effects of the pandemic on children from communities of color, the groups said.

The loss of a loved one has affected children and adolescents more than it has other age groups, research from the American Academy of Pediatrics shows. More than 140,000 children in the United States have lost at least one caregiver since the start of the pandemic, with youth of color disproportionately affected.

“This worsening crisis in child and adolescent mental health is inextricably tied to the stress brought on by COVID-19 and the ongoing struggle for racial justice, and represents an acceleration of trends observed prior to 2020,” the statement said.

Before the pandemic, mental health concerns and suicide had been rising steadily among children and adolescents between 2010 and 2020. By 2018, suicide was the second leading cause of death for youths ages 10 to 24.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, between March and October 2020, emergency department visits for children with mental health emergencies rose by 24% for those ages 5 to 11 and 31% for children 12 to 17. Suspected suicide attempt visits to the ER among girls ages 12 to 17 in early 2021 were up more than 50% over the same period in 2019, according to the CDC.

“We are caring for young people with soaring rates of depression, anxiety, trauma, loneliness and suicidality that will have lasting impacts on them, their families, their communities and all of our futures,” Dr. Gabrielle A. Carlson, president of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, said in a statement. “We cannot sit idly by.”

The organizations are urging policymakers to take actions such as increasing federal funding to ensure families have access to mental health services, supporting effective models of school-based care and accelerating the integration of mental health care into pediatric care.

Under the American Rescue Plan, $80 million was invested in the Pediatric Mental Health Care Access program to integrate behavioral health needs into pediatric primary care and $20 million was directed to supporting youth suicide prevention programs. The plan also contributed $50 million for community-based funding for local behavioral health needs worsened by the pandemic.

Finding a provider can be difficult. The American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry reported earlier this year that there was a severe shortage of child psychiatrists in nearly every state in the country.

Getting children urgent mental health care can be even more challenging, especially when emergency rooms are full. Earlier this year when hospitals were overwhelmed in Colorado and Connecticut, for example, children were sent out of state for care.

Pediatricians and psychiatrists declare national emergency in youth mental health

The Frankfurt book fair, the world's largest, celebrated its return Tuesday, but with fewer big names attending and star author Margaret Atwood only joining via video link, was not quite back to its former glory.

After going almost fully digital in 2020 to curb the coronavirus spread, this year's fair will see publishers, booksellers, authors and readers meeting face-to-face again.&nbsp;

But it will be a more muted version of past editions, as uncertainty about travel restrictions has kept many international visitors away.&nbsp;<a href="https://www.wionews.com/entertainment/hollywood/news-all-grown-up-angelina-jolie-attends-eternals-premiere-with-her-five-kids-421979" hreflang="en">All grown up! Angelina Jolie attends 'Eternals' premiere with her five kids</a>

"Back to business does not mean back to normal," fair director Juergen Boos said at the opening, but the event nevertheless offered a chance for the industry to "reconnect", he added.

Award-winning novelist Margaret Atwood, whose native Canada is this year's guest of honour, dialled into the opening ceremony via Skype to deliver a message of hope.

"Covid and the climate crisis have shown us how fragile we are as human beings," she said. "But we have also been demonstrating how resilient, inventive, and how creative we can be."

Books had helped people to escape the isolation of the pandemic and make sense of the world, said Atwood, author of "The Handmaid's Tale".&nbsp;<a href="https://www.wionews.com/entertainment/hollywood/news-oscars-iceland-selects-%E2%80%98lamb%E2%80%99-as-international-feature-submission-421975" hreflang="en">Oscars: Iceland selects ‘Lamb’ as International Feature submission</a>

"Books are both time travel devices and empathy machines. They take us to distant lands, allow us inside other worlds," she added.

- Young readers -

The fair, which opens to trade visitors on Wednesday before welcoming the general public later in the week, runs until Sunday.

It comes as the book industry has been "doing pretty well over the past 18 months", according to Boos, with people in many countries using the slower pace of life during lockdown to read more -- adolescents especially.

In the United States, printed book sales rose by more than eight percent in 2020 to record their best year in a decade, according to the NPD research group.

Growth was driven by teen categories but also adult non-fiction, as people turned to cookbooks and DIY books to pass the time at home.&nbsp;<a href="https://www.wionews.com/entertainment/bts-member-suga-releases-remix-for-their-song-with-coldplay-my-universe-422034" hreflang="en">BTS member Suga releases remix for their song with Coldplay 'My Universe'</a>

In Germany, the European Union's largest book market, bookstores used the shutdowns to expand their online sales, leading to a 20-percent jump in internet revenues to 2.2 billion euros ($2.5 billion). Audio and e-books also saw double-digit growth.

"The book industry has passed the Covid stress test," said Karin Schmidt-Friderichs, chairwoman of the German Publishers and Booksellers Association.&nbsp;

- Christmas concerns -

But the news for the industry is not all good.

The book trade, with global revenues of around $100 billion annually, is not immune to the shortages of raw materials and supply chain problems disrupting economies as countries rebound from the coronavirus downturn.

With the crucial Christmas holiday season fast approaching, publishers are sounding the alarm about paper shortages, bottlenecks at shipping ports and higher transport costs.

"I fear that this Christmas, people cannot be sure of getting any book they want at short notice," Jonathan Beck, head of renowned German publishing house C.H. Beck, told the Handelsblatt financial daily.

Books could also become more expensive, he warned.

- Covid curbs -

This week's Frankfurt gathering is the latest example of trade fairs stirring back to life, and comes after the German city of Munich welcomed 400,000 visitors to the IAA auto show in September.

Daily visitor numbers are capped at 25,000 however, less than half the usual capacity. Frankfurt fairgoers must also wear masks and show proof of vaccination, recovery from Covid or a negative test.

More than 2,000 exhibitors from upwards of 80 countries are attending, well below the 7,500 exhibitors from over 100 countries who attended in 2019.&nbsp;

Some 300 authors are coming, including Canada's Michel Jean, Dany Laferriere and Michael Crummey.&nbsp;

But compared with past years when the likes of Atwood, Ken Follett, Cecelia Ahern and Nicholas Sparks visited, this year's event lacks the same star power.&nbsp;

Several large publishing houses are also staying away, preferring to take part online instead.&nbsp;

As a result, much of the usual networking and haggling over licensing and translation rights will happen on the fair's digital platforms.

Trevor Jones, a former contestant on reality TV show Millionaire Matchmaker, died earlier this month, reports confirmed on Tuesday. He was 34 at the time of his death.

As per reports, his loved ones reportedly said that Jones died suddenly on October 9 from complications related to Vascular Ehlers Danlos Syndrome: a disorder that affects an individual's connective tissue and can weaken the walls of blood vessels.

"Trevor had a gift where he could make anyone smile, laugh, or feel comfortable with just a look or a few words," the page adds.

To be absolutely honest with you, the whole episode--involving pizza and champagne--was an act for Tiffany &amp; Co.'s latest short film.&nbsp;

In the duo's first campaign together for the same premium brand, Beyoncé and JAY-Z told the tale of a "modern love story," and this short film seems to be an extension of that.

Blue Ivy crashes Jay-Z and Beyoncé date night

The pandemic has triggered all sorts of upheavals in residential real estate. But whether we stayed in our New York City apartments, or left the city for the suburbs or second homes — and maybe have since returned — we are all spending much more time in our homes.

With each move and rejiggering of space, there have been possessions to cast a critical eye on (keep? discard? put in storage?), not to mention furniture to arrange, art to hang and other design-related tasks. Some talented souls, blessed with visual and organizational skills, do it all themselves. Others, blessed with ample income, may turn to consultants for help.

Many such experts saw their businesses plummet during early lockdowns — and then boom as people stuck at home focused on their immediate surroundings. Some have adjusted to the times by introducing or ramping up remote consultations. Here, a look at some assorted consultants and what they charge — from decluttering experts to professionals who can help you choose paint colors for your walls, houseplants and signature scents for your rooms.

Houseplant Whisperer

Houseplants were increasing in popularity even before the coronavirus arrived, but the pandemic has spurred even more interest. Not everyone, though, has a green thumb.

Enter plant consultants such as Maryah Greene, who runs the one-woman New York firm Greene Piece. Greene will walk into a new client’s apartment “with 200 plants in my head,” she said. But as she gets to know the client and the space (amount of sunlight, the presence of pets or young children, for instance) she starts narrowing things down.

After each consultation, she provides a guide with plant recommendations and advice on care.

For a 45- to 60-minute plant-styling consultation, Greene charges $200 to $300, based on a clients’ ability to pay and the size of the space.

Feng Shui Consultant

You may be curious about feng shui, the ancient Chinese practice of using design to enhance health and prosperity. Or maybe you just feel things in your apartment, and perhaps in your life, are out of whack. Feng shui practitioners such as Judith Wendell, founder of Sacred Currents, a New York-based consulting firm, may be able to help.

Wendell talks clients through feng shui’s five elements and the bagua — a template that divides a room into nine zones and helps guide the placement of furnishings — as she makes recommendations for a space, taking into consideration a customer’s health, relationships and goals. She can recommend the most propitious place for a home office — or a litter box.

Sessions with Wendell start at $675, and she charges $180 an hour for a virtual consultation, with a two-hour minimum.

Environmental Psychologist

Imagine you could paint your home office a color that could spur you to think more creatively during work hours. Or arrange your furniture so that everyone in the family could get along better. Or design rooms to support someone in your household who has ADHD or is on the autism spectrum.

An environmental psychologist such as Sally Augustin can offer advice on all of the above. Augustin, co-founder of the firm The Space Doctors, has pored over scientific studies to understand how sensory stimuli affect our performance and mood.

For consultations, she charges $50 to $125 per room, and $175 per hour for those with special needs.

One reason art installation firms began to rebound after the initial lockdown: Zoom meetings. “Clients were focused on their walls and what they look like and whatever was behind them in a Zoom call,” said David Kassel, owner of I Level, which is based in New York.

Clients often contact I Level seeking help grouping artworks or framed photos on a wall, either in a grid or a free-form, salon-style arrangement, Kassel said.

The firm charges $295 per art handler for two hours of work, then $95 for each additional hour.

Aromatherapy for a Home

For years, hotels and spas have commissioned signature scents. Now homeowners can do the same.

These fragrances go beyond simply smelling good, said Yael Alkalay, founder and CEO of Red Flower, a company based in New York that makes personal care and home products from potent botanical extracts and other ingredients derived from plants. The company believes the natural scents of its products can boost your mood and help you work and sleep better.

A consultation with the firm starts at $500, and prices vary depending on the type and quantity of ingredients and techniques used.

Decluttering

Professional organizers promise to turn a disorderly home into an orderly one. But hire one and your place might momentarily look worse before it starts to look better.

The organizers from Horderly, which is based in New York, start each project by pulling everything out of cabinets and closets. They ask clients about whether or not items are used and, if they are, how often. Dispensable stuff is tossed or set aside for donation, and items that are used frequently are put back in the easiest-to-reach places.

Often the process involves purchasing products such as bins and baskets. And Fillip Hord, who founded the firm with his wife, Jamie Hord, said his staff is not fazed by what they might be asked to put in those containers — they’ve organized sex toys and created “weed boxes” for cannabis paraphernalia.

Depending on the location and number of hours billed, Horderly charges $85 to $150 per hour per organizer.

Helping with Big Moves

An older couple downsizing from a townhouse to an apartment. A client who must pack up the contents of a home in advance of a gut renovation. A death in the family necessitating the clearing out of a lifetime’s worth of a loved one’s possessions.

Seriatim, a New York-based organizing company, specializes in helping clients deal with belongings during such life-changing events.

“Our client is crisis-driven,” said Sonya Weisshappel, founder and CEO. She and her team will sort items, inventory them, pack up and distribute to relatives, donate and prepare for sale at auction. The firm charges $1,450 for an eight-hour day with one team member.

Houseplant Whisperer Houseplants were increasing in popularity even before the coronavirus arrived, but the pandemic has spurred even more interest. Environmental Psychologist Imagine you could paint your home office a color that could spur you to think more creatively during work hours. Much of what happens in “The Lehman Trilogy” is invisible, which is not the way prestige drama usually works onstage.

Directed by Sam Mendes, this British import, which reaches across 164 years of American history to trace the family saga behind the fallen financial powerhouse Lehman Brothers, was a scalding-hot ticket during a brief pre-pandemic run at the Park Avenue Armory. Yet it offers almost nothing in the way of spectacle and only the slightest of costume changes: a top hat here, a pair of glasses there.

In the captivating production that opened Thursday night at the Nederlander Theater, it relies largely on an unspoken agreement between actors and audience — to imagine together and let fancy crowd out fact.

Sort of the way that heedless investors looked right past all warning signs in the faith-based run-up to the stock market crash of 2008. Illusion is illusion, after all, and financial markets, like the theater, require a certain suspension of disbelief — although when the fantasy bursts in theater, the fallout is less ruinous. When investors halted their collective game of make-believe 13 years ago, mammoth financial firms like Lehman Brothers met their swift demise, and the world’s markets suffered the aftershocks.

“The Lehman Trilogy,” though, is not actually a number-crunching play; reports that Jeff Bezos took in a recent performance should not cause you to infer otherwise.

Written by Stefano Massini and adapted by Ben Power, it is a vividly human tale, nimbly performed by three of the finest actors around: Simon Russell Beale, Adam Godley and Adrian Lester, who, in making his Broadway debut, has replaced the original cast’s Ben Miles. (I did not catch Beale, Godley and Miles at the Armory; it was too scarce a ticket, and too pricey.)

Slipping in and out of myriad roles, the actors spend the bulk of their time narrating, standing outside their characters. We, in turn, spend most of our time envisioning the fleet-footed story they conjure with words over three-plus hours (including two intermissions) that feel nowhere near that long.

Our eyes track these witchy actors as they move through Es Devlin’s revolving glass-and-metal office set, while our minds persuade us that the story is unfolding in a succession of disparate spaces that resemble it not at all.

A peculiarly gentle interrogation of the American dream’s descent into many-tentacled nightmare, “The Lehman Trilogy” begins as so many stories of this nation do: with an intrepid immigrant’s arrival. A young man from Bavaria stands before us, suitcase in hand, freshly landed in New York Harbor and certain he is worldly after 45 days at sea.

The year is 1844, he is Heyum Lehmann, and in a moment we will see him reborn as Henry Lehman — his Ellis Island moniker bestowed by a port official too obtuse to comprehend the newcomer’s real name.

On first impression, Henry (Beale) is darling, funny and utterly sympathetic. When his younger brothers, Emanuel (Lester) and Mayer (Godley), follow him across the ocean, we feel a similar warmth toward them.

This is where the mechanics of the play, with these deft and lovely actors breathing such life into the brothers, coax us into an ease at odds with moral logic as we watch their genteelly brutal acquisition and stockpiling of wealth.

The brothers settle in antebellum Alabama, where even the earliest iteration of the family firm, a shop selling fabrics and clothing, relies on a local economy built on slavery. As the Lehmans grow more ambitious, they start buying and selling cotton from the plantations, making their first fortune on it.

Seldom do we hear a voice of conscience — like the local physician who tells a dispirited Mayer, in the aftermath of the Civil War, that the collapse of the South’s economy should not have come as a surprise.

“Everything that was built here was built on a crime,” the doctor says. “The roots run so deep you cannot see them, but the ground beneath our feet is poisoned. It had to end this way.”
That is, of course, a warning that the pattern of reckless profit and resulting pain will repeat: in the 1929 crash, which Lehman Brothers managed to survive by morphing yet again, and in the 2008 crash, which it didn’t. It is also a signal that the founders of the firm — whose deaths, when they come, are meant to move us, and do — were not the ethical betters of their more vulgar descendants.

With a subdued, filmic score by Nick Powell, played live by Candida Caldicot on an upright piano, “The Lehman Trilogy” is structured in three parts. It follows Emanuel and Mayer to New York, and their family through successive generations, whose principals we first meet in childhood.

So here is Emanuel’s son Philip (Beale), a future shark, as a gape-mouthed tot prodded to parade his smarts for guests. Here is Philip’s son Bobby (Godley) as a buoyant 10-year-old, whose father mercilessly dismantles the boy’s love for horses as creatures rather than commodities.

And most enchantingly, here is Mayer’s son Herbert (Lester), a future governor and senator, as a thumb-sucking 3-year-old playing with his father’s beard, and later as a fair-minded 9-year-old at Hebrew school, objecting to the divine massacre of the innocent children of Egypt.

No matter how horrid some of the Lehmans become (not Herbert, though; never Herbert), knowing them young cushions our feelings toward them later. That’s human nature. What’s unsettling is which people in this saga of capitalism we see portrayed, which people the play helps us to imagine clearly and which people we are asked to imagine vaguely or not at all. Proximity shapes our sympathies.

“The Lehman Trilogy” exists because of the cascading financial disaster that extinguished Lehman Brothers in 2008, yet its perspective is very much from the top of that deluge. Any harm bucketing down below is at best an abstraction, just as it is in 1929, when the play shows us suicides of despairing stockbrokers but none of the pain radiating through lower social strata. And slavery, the founder of the family’s feast, is kept in soft focus, off to the side.

The primary reason to see “The Lehman Trilogy,” then, is to witness the superb Beale, Godley and Lester in their feats of storytelling — and to conspire with them in imagining the play’s tarnished, if not truly vanished, world.

When intermission comes and the auditorium lights turn on, gaze up at that glass set. You’ll see an awfully comfortable-looking audience reflected there.

(I did not catch Beale, Godley and Miles at the Armory; it was too scarce a ticket, and too pricey.) Slipping in and out of myriad roles, the actors spend the bulk of their time narrating, standing outside their characters. It had to end this way.” That is, of course, a warning that the pattern of reckless profit and resulting pain will repeat: in the 1929 crash, which Lehman Brothers managed to survive by morphing yet again, and in the 2008 crash, which it didn’t. Through Jan. 2 at the Nederlander Theater, Manhattan; thelehmantrilogy.com. Running time: 3 hours 15 minutes.

Review: In ‘The Lehman Trilogy,’ a vivid tale of profit and pain

Taking a step to make their population healthy and disease-free, the US&nbsp;Food and Drug Administration released new guidelines aimed at reducing sodium levels by an average of 12% in pre-made or packaged foods.

The guidance issued by the FDA intended to help lower the amount&nbsp;of salt people eat and&nbsp;concerns voluntary targets for foods produced by food manufacturers, food chains, and foodservice operators.

The agency wants to cut sodium intake to an average of 3,000 milligrams per day, compared with 3,400 mg. But still, the average intake would be above the Dietary Guidelines for Americans' recommended limit of 2,300 mg per day for anyone over 14 years of age.

"The FDA's targets represent an important step forward, but lowering sodium intake to 3,000 mg per day is not enough," the American Heart Association said in a statement.

"Although the average intake would still be above the Dietary Guidelines for Americans' recommended limit of 2,300 mg per day for those 14 and older, we know that even these modest reductions—made slowly over the next few years—will substantially decrease diet-related diseases, make for a healthier population overall and lower the burden of health care costs in this country."

According to the FDA, most people eat more sodium than recommended, and over 95% of children between two and 13 eat more sodium than recommended and over 70% of the sodium that Americans eat comes from packaged, processed, store-bought, and restaurant foods.

Reportedly, the public health benefit of limiting salt may result to reduce tens of thousands fewer cases of heart disease and strokes each year, as well as billions of dollars in healthcare savings.&nbsp;

A transgender member from the cast of 'Hamilton' musical had alleged that they were fired from the hit show after asking for a gender-neutral dressing room.

According to a discrimination and retaliation complaint filed by Suni Reid--who is Black, nonbinary, and uses the pronouns they/them--said that they were "cast out of Hamilton when the Company's management refused to renew their contract shortly after they requested that the performers have a gender-neutral dressing room in addition to the ones for men and women."

The complaint further accuses the production of treating them unjustly. They said they "experienced frequent incidents of discrimination and harassment" that involved being purposely misgendered that was mainly because of using a male dressing space.

"Publicly, Hamilton is a beacon of diversity and appears committed to causes seeking social justice and harmony. Behind the curtain, however, the company's management will force out a Black, transgender cast member simply because they stood up for themselves and advocated for a more equitable workplace, and therefore called that public image into question," Reid's attorneys, Lawrence M. Pearson and Linsday M. Goldbrum, said in a statement to EW. "We look forward to upholding Mx. Reid's rights and hope this is a wake-up call for the theater industry about the systemic inequities that persist even at its greatest heights," read the complaint document, according to reports.&nbsp;

Reid joined Hamilton as a cast member in 2017 and has performed in the Los Angeles, Chicago, and Broadway productions of 'Hamilton'. During their time with the team, Reid has reportedly covered many roles that included lead roles such as Aaron Burr, George Washington, Hercules Mulligan/James Madison, and Lafayette/Thomas Jefferson.

According to reports, a gender-neutral space was eventually made by partitioning off a section of the dressing room, which Reid reportedly claims did not meet their expectations or the expectations of the Los Angeles transgender regulations.&nbsp;

Later, Reid alleges that Hamilton 'terminated its contract (and) the only explanation is that Mx. Reid was punished for making legally protected complaints and requests to the Company'.

The Irish novelist Sally Rooney said on Tuesday that she would not allow the Israeli publishing house that handled her previous novels to publish her most recent book, “Beautiful World, Where Are You,” because of her support for Palestinian people and the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement.

In an email, Rooney said that she was proud to have her first two books, “Normal People” and “Conversations With Friends,” published in Hebrew. “Likewise, it would be an honor for me to have my latest novel translated into Hebrew and available to Hebrew-language readers,” she said. “But for the moment, I have chosen not to sell these translation rights to an Israeli-based publishing house.”

She added that she knew some would disagree with her decision, “but I simply do not feel it would be right for me under the present circumstances to accept a new contract with an Israeli company that does not publicly distance itself from apartheid and support the U.N.-stipulated rights of the Palestinian people.”

Her Israeli publisher, Modan Publishing House, said in an email that when it inquired about “Beautiful World, Where Are You,” which was published in English in September, it was told that she wasn’t interested in publishing it in Israel. It said it was not given an explanation.

In her email, Rooney cited a report published this year by Human Rights Watch that said the actions of the Israeli government meet the legal definition of apartheid, and she expressed her support for the BDS movement, which aims to harness international political and economic pressure on Israel. Supporters say the goal of the BDS movement is to end the Israeli occupation of the West Bank, while critics, including many Israelis, say its real aim is the end of Israel as a Jewish state. Rooney’s decision was previously reported by the Israeli newspaper Haaretz.

Rooney is not the first prominent author to decline an offer to publish in Israel. Alice Walker said in 2012 that she would not allow a Hebrew translation of her Pulitzer Prize-winning novel “The Color Purple.” Walker, who was born in Georgia in 1944, said at the time, “I grew up under American apartheid and this,” she added of Israel’s treatment of Palestinians, “was far worse.”

Deborah Harris, a literary agent whose company handles major authors looking to be translated and published in Israel, described Rooney’s decision as painful and counterproductive.

“When it’s ice cream or when it’s cement, or whatever else it is, it’s one thing, but when it comes to culture, I just have a very, very hard time seeing how this can be productive in changing anything,” Harris said. “What literature is supposed to do is reach into the hearts and minds of people. ”

Those likely to read Rooney’s work in Israel, Harris added, are not those who support the policies to which she likely objects. “Her audience here are people who are in total support of a Palestinian state,” Harris said.

Rooney’s books have been successful both critically and commercially. Her second novel, “Normal People,” was longlisted for the Booker Prize and made into a television series by BBC Three and Hulu, for which Rooney was nominated for an Emmy. A TV series based on “Conversations With Friends” is expected to be released next year.

All this has come to Rooney quickly. The author, 30, is sometimes described as more famous than the books she’s written, or as the first great millennial novelist.

“Beautiful World, Where Are You” follows the friendship of two young women, Eileen, an editorial assistant at a literary magazine, and Alice, a novelist whose career raced into fame and success, much in the way that Rooney’s did. The book has been on the New York Times bestseller list for hardcover fiction for four weeks.

In her statement, Rooney said that in making this decision not to publish again with Modan, she was “responding to the call from Palestinian civil society,” and she expressed solidarity with Palestinian people “in their struggle for freedom, justice and equality.”

She added that the Hebrew-language translation rights to the novel are still available, and that if she can find a way to sell them and adhere to the BDS movement’s guidelines, “I will be very pleased and proud to do so.”

“Is it all pretty? NO but it’s truthful and my hope in sharing is that we all become more educated, more familiar with what cancer looks like,” Doherty wrote on Instagram this past week.

The images are unsettling to any member of Generation X who remembers her as Brenda Walsh, the feisty, polarizing teenager she played for four years on the hit 1990s show “Beverly Hills, 90210.”

Doherty said she was posting the images as part of Breast Cancer Awareness Month in the hopes that they will jar people into getting mammograms and regular breast exams and help people cut through “the fear and face whatever might be in front of you.”

The unvarnished photos align with the frank nature of an actress who never seemed interested in being universally liked and are likely to resonate with a public that is reconsidering how female celebrities were treated in the 1990s and early 2000s, said Kearston Wesner, an associate professor of media studies at Quinnipiac University in Connecticut who teaches celebrity culture.

“The photos aren’t touched up,” Wesner said. “They’re not presented in any way than the reality she’s going through. There is some feeling that when she is communicating with you, she is coming from an authentic place.”

Doherty said she learned she had breast cancer in 2015. Since then, she said she has had a mastectomy, as well as radiation and chemotherapy treatment.

The photos, which have been viewed about 280,000 times, have elicited comments of sympathy, admiration and praise on her Instagram account, which has more than 1.8 million followers.

Doherty left “Beverly Hills, 90210” in 1994, then went on to appear in the 1995 movie “Mallrats” and several television movies and shows. In 2019, she appeared in a brief reboot of the original “90210” called “BH90210.”

In a recent interview with a leading daily, Mallya talked about his rumoured ex-girlfriend Deepika Padukone--who has suffered from depression in the past--and the commendable work she has done in spreading awareness about mental health.&nbsp;

Mallya told a daily in his interview with them, stating, "I think it’s amazing the work that she and everybody else do in India. There are just not enough people who talk about mental health. The fact that people like her use their platforms to promote mental health is very inspiring, and I think that the more people we can get to talk about mental health--whether it's writing books, celebs or just grassroots level or teachers talking about it in school to children or families talking about it--better for everyone."&nbsp;

"For me, my journey with mental health started in 2015-16. As I have said in the book, I was really unaware of a lot of the things that I was going through before then. So mental health was not really something that we talked about; it wasn't really a conversation I was having with anyone," he said when asked about whether he had ever talked about his mental health struggles with the star.

I subsequently set up a mental health organisation, through which we try to de-stigmatise mental illness and create awareness about mental health… I didn't feel like going to work, I didn't feel like meeting anybody. I didn't go out. I didn't feel like doing anything. Many times, and I don't know if I should say this, but I didn't feel like living anymore."

"I think that when you read anything on anyone you care about--a parent, friend, or sibling--and not even read about it, as humans we don't like to see people we care about, suffering. Regardless of what the suffering is, it’s inconsequential. Whether he is being accused or not accused is inconsequential. The fact that you know someone is suffering, does hurt. Again, I write in the book that, 'Everyone is entitled to an opinion'. I think opinions are great in life. I think discourse and discussion are very important, but you should have facts to make opinions. A lot of the time someone's opinion is not an opinion, it’s just a vindictive attack. And then they are not even open to having a discussion. You must have an opinion and be open to having your mind changed or to look at things from a different perspective which you are unaware of."

Dogs are not just good at taking commands but can also grasp human language, reveals a recent study.&nbsp;

Giving us an advanced understanding of how dogs' memories work, a recent study on six 'genius dogs' shows that this highly likeable animals has a 'remarkable' grasp of the human language.&nbsp;

Reportedly, Hungarian researchers spent over two years scouting for dogs around the globe who could recognise the names of their various toys. Although most can learn commands to an extent, memorising the names of items seemed like a difficult task, with most dogs failing to acquire that skill.

Six 'genius dogs'--Max (Hungary), Gaia (Brazil), Nalani (Netherlands), Squall (US), Whisky (Norway), and Rico (Spain)--cleared the test of proving they knew the names of more than 28 toys, with some even remembering more than 100.&nbsp;

For the Genius Dog Challenge, these six dogs were enlisted to participate in a series of livestreamed experiments.&nbsp;

"These gifted dogs can learn new names of toys in a remarkable speed. In our previous study we found that they could learn a new toy name after hearing it only four times. But, with such short exposure, they did not form a long-term memory of it," said Dr Claudia Fugazza at Eötvös Loránd University in Budapest, lead researcher.&nbsp;

To push their limits, the owners of these dogs were made to teach them six, and then 12, names of toys in a single week.&nbsp;

"It turned out that, for these talented dogs, this was not much of a challenge. They easily learned between 11 to 12 toys," said Dr. Shany Dror, who is also from the same university as Dr. Claudia.&nbsp;

After the obligatory hiatus last year, the World's 50 Best Restaurant Awards is back with its list of winners.&nbsp;

This year, the top spot has gone to Noma by Danish chef René Redzepi. This three-Michelin star restaurant first opened in Copenhagen's Christianshavn area back in 2003 and first took the top slot in the World's 50 Best Restaurants awards in the 2010.

Redzepi talked about his first big win 11 years ago while accepting this year's mega prize. &nbsp;"In the wake of this victory, all dreams were seemingly open. It also gave us a chance to be a part -- one part -- of a transformation of an entire region's food culture."

"If the pandemic has taught us anything, it's how fragile our dreams can be, how incredibly grueling and difficult this industry can be," he said about the hardships he had faced in his field.

In the year 2019, a new rule was put in place that forbade previous winners of the top prize from taking the trophy home again. A move that prevented New York's Eleven Madison Park, The Fat Duck near London, Osteria Francescana in Modena, Italy, and the 2019 winner, Mirazur in Menton, France.

However, these fine-dining giants are put under a separate list: 'Best of the Best'.
