T20 World Cup: Rohit Sharma recreates Novak Djokovic's iconic 'grass-eating' celebration - WATCH

Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) president Roger Binny has almost confirmed the appointment of Gautam Gambhir as the next head coach of the Indian men's senior cricket team. Rahul Dravid's tenure as the coach expired post the T20 World Cup and he has refused an extension.

Speaking to reporters after India clinched the T20 World Cup, Binny said Gambhir's appointment was a 'good thing' for Indian cricket.

"Gautam Gambhir has got a lot of experience and if he takes the job it's definitely going to be a good thing for Indian cricket," Roger Binny was quoted as saying by news agency ANI.

"He is experienced that's what India needs. India needs a coach who played the game, and he has played in all three formats of the game."

Under Dravid's tenure, India cultivated a selfless brand of cricket that had been missing for some years. Additionally, the team reached the finals of the World Test Championship (WTC) and the 50-over World Cup at home where they just fell shy of the ultimate glory.

Gambhir's job will be to keep up the momentum and ensure that the India talent factory continues to win silverware on the biggest stages.

Gambhir leading the race

The former Indian opener's name gained prominence for the job after he guided Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to a third Indian Premier League (IPL) title last month.

“I would love to coach the Indian team. There’s no bigger honour than coaching your national team," said Gambhir when quizzed about the prospective job.

"You are representing 140 crore Indians and more across the globe as well and when you represent India, how can it get bigger than that?”

If appointed, Gambhir would have a busy few years ahead as India attempts to lock in a place in the WTC final before playing the Champions Trophy in 2025, the T20 World Cup in 2026 and the 50-over World Cup in 2027.

Apart from Gambhir, BCCI is keen to bring former South African cricketer, Jonty Rhodes, on board as the fielding coach to replace T Dilip.

Both Gambhir and Rhodes have worked together previously at Lucknow Super Giants (LSG). The duo managed to take the new franchise to IPL playoffs in two consecutive seasons.

Also read | Life completes a full circle for Rahul Dravid as departing India coach leads team to glory in T20 World Cup Gambhir leading the race The former Indian opener's name gained prominence for the job after he guided Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to a third Indian Premier League (IPL) title last month. “I would love to coach the Indian team. There’s no bigger honour than coaching your national team," said Gambhir when quizzed about the prospective job. "You are representing 140 crore Indians and more across the globe as well and when you represent India, how can it get bigger than that?” If appointed, Gambhir would have a busy few years ahead as India attempts to lock in a place in the WTC final before playing the Champions Trophy in 2025, the T20 World Cup in 2026 and the 50-over World Cup in 2027. Ravindra Jadeja announces retirement from T20Is after India’s World Cup victory

India became the T20 World Champion by beating South Africa in a thriller on Saturday (June 29). Suryakumar Yadav's brilliant catch to dismiss David Miller on the first ball of the last over with SA needing 16 runs played a pivotal role in it.

Hardik Pandya, bowling the last over, bowled a low and wide full toss outside off which Miller connected well. The ball travelled to long off region where Surya caught the ball just inside the boundary line but was disbalanced. SKY then popped the ball in the air and crossed the boundary only to comeback inside and catch it again. Have a look at the video below:

India became the T20 World Champion by beating South Africa in a thriller on Saturday (June 29). Suryakumar Yadav's brilliant catch to dismiss David Miller on the first ball of the last over with SA needing 16 runs played a pivotal role in it. Hardik Pandya, bowling the last over, bowled a low and wide full toss outside off which Miller connected well. The ball travelled to long off region where Surya caught the ball just inside the boundary line but was disbalanced. SKY then popped the ball in the air and crossed the boundary only to comeback inside and catch it again.
Indian men's cricket team head coach Rahul Dravid was in a jovial mood after the Men-in-Blue lifted the T20 World Cup trophy after a long, 17-year wait on Saturday (Jun 29). Dravid, who endured a painful exit from the 50-over World Cup in the Caribbean in 2007 had a 'life-coming-full-circle' moment for him as India exorcised its demons in the ICC tournaments in Barbados.

Speaking to reporters after the match, Dravid joked that he was unemployed from the next week and if there were any offers.

Quizzed if he will be able to move on from the massive win, Dravid quipped: "Yeah, I will be. I mean, next week life will be same for me. I'll be unemployed, that'll be the only difference."

Responding to laughing journalists, he added, "Any offers?"

Dravid, therefore, goes down as one of the most successful coaches in the history of Indian cricket.

Bumrah on a roll

Having inspired India to win against Pakistan and Australia, Bumrah was once again India’s man for the big occasion as he got the better of Hendricks on the third ball of the second over. The Proteas batter did not judge the flight of an inward-moving ball he left. However, the ball would directly go on to disturb his stumps, resulting in the first breakthrough of the innings for India. The wicket left Hendricks stunned while India celebrated with ecstasy.

Soon the joy would get double as South Africa lost skipper Aiden Markram on the third ball of the next over. Both Hendricks and Markram were dismissed for identical scores of 4 off 5 which left South Africa at 12/2.

For India, Virat Kohli top scored with 76 off 59 balls while Axar Patel, who was promoted at number five, played a handy innings of 47 off 31 balls. Earlier, India started the innings with a bang, scoring 15 runs in the first over - the most in the first over of any T20 World Cup final. Kohli was specially attacking in the first over, hitting three boundaries off Marco Jansen. Rohit then started the second over with back-to-back boundaries as well before left-arm spinner Keshav Maharaj dismissed him on the fourth ball. Maharaj struck twice in the over, sending back Rishabh Pant for a duck on the last ball of the same over. Also Watch: T20 WC 2024, Final: W.0.W! After SKY's wicket, Kohli and Axar stitched a partnership of 72 runs in 54 balls. The partnership was broken when Axar got run out in the 14th over on the team score of 106. Shivam Dube then joined Kohli on the crease and the duo added 57 runs off just 32 balls for the fifth wicket and took the team past 150 in 18th over. Kohli also completed his fifty during the partnership with a single off Anrich Nortje in 17th over. Kohli slowed down after Maharaj's twin wicket over but started taking the bowlers to cleaners in the last overs. He hit six fours and two sixes in his innings. Dube finished 27 off 16 balls, providing much needed impetus for India in the last overs. For South Africa, Maharaj was the pick of the bowlers with the figures of 2/23 in three overs. Apart from him Kagiso Rabada also took a wicket.

The stage is set for the T20 World Cup final as South Africa square off against India in a mouth-watering clash on Saturday (June 29) at the Kensington Oval in Bridgetown, Barbados. The contest will be pivotal for both sides as India try to end their 17-year drought for a T20 World Cup title while South Africa will be on a hunt for their maiden world title. But rain could be an uninvited guest for the final and influence the result of the match.

The contest will have a reserve day which comes as a huge relief for the fans if rain plays spoilsport in the contest. However, if rain plays spoilsport on the reserve day, then the International Cricket Council (ICC) will face an unlikely situation that could see the set of fans divided.

What is the provision if reserve day gets washed out?

The match will only move into a reserve day if rain plays spoilsport on Saturday, meaning the match will start on Sunday from the point where it was stopped. A washout will only become effective on the reserve day if the team batting second does not play a minimum of 10 overs. Once the match is abandoned both India and South Africa will be declared joint winners with India adding to their only title from 2007 while South Africa will add a World Cup to their trophy cabinet.

Explained: What will happen if India-South Africa T20 World Cup final gets washed out on reserve day

Bangladesh pacer and vice captain Taskin Ahmed has put the onus of team's poor performance in the 2024 T20 World Cup on batters' 'slump of the decade.' Taskin made the comments upon arrival in Bangladesh capital Dhaka on Friday (June 28) after the team failed to advance to knockout stage.

"When you talk about the batting, if you look at the statistics, I think every [teams'] batting department suffered in the USA this time. Bowlers got a lot of help. We got better [batting] wickets in the West Indies."

Also Read: We will come back 'bigger, badder and better', says England coach Matthew Mott after T20 WC exit

"I haven't seen such a long bad patch for the batters in my ten years playing for Bangladesh. I hope it goes away quickly," said Taskin.

It is to be noted that none of the Bangladesh top three could give the team a good start in four matches played in the Group Stage and three in Super 8.

The failure of senior batters like all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan and Mahmudullah also took a toll on team's performance. Taskin, however, ruled out the possibility of their form impacting the team off the field.

"The seniors' off-form had an effect on the team but not off the field," he said. "They are great team men. We stayed as a team for 47 days. Everything was fine off the field. It is quite normal that a team will have problems when important players are not in form. I am hopeful that we can recover from this, and play better soon."

The pacer also conceded the team's overall poor record in the T20Is but assured of good performances in the future.

We got better [batting] wickets in the West Indies." Also Read: We will come back 'bigger, badder and better', says England coach Matthew Mott after T20 WC exit "I haven't seen such a long bad patch for the batters in my ten years playing for Bangladesh. I am hopeful that we can recover from this, and play better soon." The pacer also conceded the team's overall poor record in the T20Is but assured of good performances in the future. "We never had great numbers in T20s. We are improving slowly. We cannot just look at minus points; we are in the negative already. We are trying to get a 'plus'. Your frustration is expected. We will give you a good win. You have to keep faith in us. We will give it our best," the vice captain said.

T20 World Cup 2024: Bangladesh pacer Taskin Ahmed blames batters' bad patch of decade for poor show

Virat Kohli’s disappointing T20 World Cup 2024 continued on Thursday (June 27) after he was dismissed by Reece Topley in the semifinal. Virat, who was scalped for a duck against Australia, scored only nine having scored a six in the same over. His dismissal saw India on the back foot having been put into bat by England in the rain-affected contest at the Providence Stadium in Guyana.

Virat falls to Topley

Having so far endured a tough T20 World Cup 2024, Virat was seen in brilliant form at the start of the match. He scored a big six on the second ball of the third ball which saw him clear his intentions for the match. However, another such shot on the fourth ball had him on the back foot as Virat misjudged the ball and was dismissed for 9 when his leg stump was demolished. This continued his poor run of form which has seen him score 75 runs in seven matches at the T20 World Cup.

At the time of writing, India were 65/2 in 8 overs as they also lost Rishabh Pant for four runs. The rain-affected contest will be crucial to India’s chances of qualifying for their third T20 World Cup final while England will be hoping to defend their title which they won in 2022.

T20 World Cup 2024: Reece Topley silences Indian contingent with prize wicket of Virat Kohli

Rohit Sharma-led India beat England by 68 runs in the T20 World Cup 2024 semifinal, in Guyana on Thursday (June 27). In a contest which had delays due to rain and wet outfield, India rode on their captain's 57 and Suryakumar Yadav's 47 to post 171-7 before Axar Patel and Kuldeep Yadav dented Jos Buttler-led England's run-chase, with three wickets apiece, to take India to their third T20 WC final. They will now face South Africa in the final on Saturday (June 29) in Barbados with both teams being unbeaten so far. While there remained a lot of positives for India, Virat Kohli's struggles will keep them concerned ahead of the South Africa clash.

Kohli has had scores of 1, 4, 0, 24, 37, 0 and 9 so far in the ongoing 20-nation event, being held in West Indies and the USA. In the semifinal, he hit a massive six off Reece Topley before the pacer rattled his stumps on the very next ball to send him packing for 9 (his fifth single-digit score in this year's edition). Thus, Kohli was dejected after his dismissal and outgoing head coach Rahul Dravid consoled him in the dressing room.

DRAVID BACKS KOHLI TO GET A BIG ONE IN THE FINAL

After India's massive win, Dravid opined on Kohli's poor run of form. He said on Star Sports, "You know with Virat, the thing is, when you play a slightly high-risk brand of cricket there can be times when it doesn't come off. Even today, I thought he hit a really good 6 to set the tempo but he was just unlucky that the ball seamed a little bit more. But I love the intent, I love the way he went about doing it. It sets a good example for the group as well if he's willing to do it. And you know, for some reason, I don't want to jinx it but I think there's a big one coming up. I'm just loving his attitude and that he's committing himself on the field - I think he deserves it."

India stormed past England by 68 runs in a rain-interrupted T20 World Cup 2024 semifinal at the Province Stadium in Guyana on Thursday (June 27). In what was a stop-start contest for most parts, Rohit Sharma-led India rode on Hitman's 57, Suryakumar Yadav's 47 and brisk cameos from Hardik Pandya and Ravindra Jadeja to post 171-7. Later, Axar Patel (3 for 23) and Kuldeep Yadav (3 for 19) led the charge with the ball to dismiss Jos Buttler & Co. for a paltry 103 in 16.4 overs. While there were a lot of positives for unbeaten Team India, who will now face South Africa -- on an eight-match winning streak -- in the final, Virat Kohli's form remains a concern.

However, the Indian captain brushed aside any concerns over Kohli's struggles. Rohit said after the game, "Look, he is a quality player. Again, we do understand his class and we do understand his importance in all these big games. Form is never a problem when you have played cricket for 15 years. He is looking good. He is probably saving it for the final. Absolutely (back him for the final."

"I can set the target in my mind, but I don't want to let anyone know about it, to the batters because they are all instinctive players and I want them to go out there and play freely without thinking too much about what's the par score.
India eye glory

Having missed out on the ODI World Cup title in November in their own backyard, India will have the opportunity to erase the sorrowful memories on Saturday. One area of concern will be the form of Virat Kohli and Shivam Dube with both unable to find their best form in the tournament. Virat has scored 75 runs in seven matches so far while Dube has hardly contributed to the Indian batting. India will rely heavily on the services of Rohit Sharma, Suryakumar Yadav and Hardik Pandya in the batting while Jasprit Bumrah, Axar Patel and Kuldeep Yadav will be key to their success with the ball.

India will be expected to go unchanged for the final contest as they are unlikely to change the winning combination. This also means that Mohammed Siraj will have to be content with a place on the bench.

Can South Africa go all the way?

Aiden Markram’s side will step in their maiden World Cup final at the senior level considering they lost at the semifinal stage in the last 32 years in different tournaments. The Proteas have been flawless until this point and will look to continue their impressive run. They will heavily depend on the batting form of Quinton de Kock, Reeza Hendricks, Markram and David Miller while the bowling responsibility will lie on the shoulders of Keshav Maharaj, Kagiso Rabada, Anrich Nortje and Tabraiz Shamsi.

IND vs SA, T20 World Cup Final Preview: Team India eye second title as resolute Proteas stand in the way

Team India is all set to take guard in its first T20 World Cup final in a decade as they face South Africa on Saturday (June 29) at the Kensington Oval in Bridgetown, Barbados. The contest will provide a huge opportunity to Team India in ending their 17-year drought to win the T20 World Cup. It will also end the Men in Blue's 11-year wait for an ICC trophy. Ahead of the latest final we flashback on what happened last time India played in the final of the T20 World Cup.

Virat stars, but India fails

The team led by MS Dhoni in the 2014 T20 World Cup had got the better of India’s opponent South Africa in the semis on Saturday. Having lost the finals in two of the last three editions before the 2014 final (in 2009 and 2012), Sri Lanka were the second-favourite to win the T20 World Cup with Dhoni’s side hailed as the best in the world. However, the team was nowhere near their best in the final with Virat Kohli being the lone warrior.

Batting first, team India scored 130/4 in their 20 overs in Dhaka as the Men in Blue were never in the contest. Virat top-scored with 77 off 58 before being run out on the final ball of the innings as India missed out on a big score. The now India skipper Rohit Sharma scored 29 off 26 and had a tough day at the office.

Yuvraj Singh makes headlines for the wrong reasons

Having led India to the ODI World Cup title in 2011, Yuvraj Singh had seen plenty of downs than ups before making it to the Indian team in the 2014 edition. However, his performance in the final was the focal point of criticism as he scored 11 runs off 21 deliveries with a strike rate of 52.38. He was slammed for his show with the bat, with many former players believing it was Yuvraj’s approach that saw India lose the final.

In response, Sri Lanka chased down the total in a one-sided contest as they won the final with 13 balls to spare. Kumar Sangakkara top scored with 52 while other batters also contributed to Sri Lanka’s only T20 World Cup win which also secured their second title at the global stage having won the 1996 ODI World Cup.

IND vs ENG T20 World Cup SF, Highlights: India beat England to reach final

Rohit Sharma’s Team India is on the brink of breaking their T20 World Cup jinx as they stand for an opportunity to win the title against South Africa on Saturday (June 29) in Barbados. While Virat Kohli and Shivam Dube’s form will concern the side, the Indian team will also get worried by ICC’s latest announcement on Friday. According to ICC, England’s Richard Kettleborough will be one of the officials for the T20 World Cup final.

Kettleborough returns to Jinx India?

Indian fans will be concerned by the addition of Kettleborough in the officiating panel of Saturday’s final as the Men of Blue have a poor record whenever he has been in charge of a knockout game. India have lost finals and semifinals whenever Kettleborough has taken charge as an on-field umpire. This includes the 2014 T20 World Cup final, the 2017 Champions Trophy final and the 2023 ODI World Cup.

However, the only relief for India will be that the Englishman will be the third umpire and won’t take charge on the field when India square off against South Africa. This time the on-field officials include Chris Gaffaney and Richard Illingworth with Richie Richardson taking on the role of match referee.

India’s Shafali Verma scripted a unique chapter in women’s cricket on Friday (June 28) against South Africa women after she scored the fastest double hundred in the format. Shafali, playing in her fifth Test match scored 205 off 197 balls before getting out, but made sure she wrote her name in the history books. She also became the second Indian woman to score a double hundred in the Test format after Mithali Raj, who did so in August 2002 against England in Taunton.

Shafali scripts history

Having decided to bat first after winning the toss, the decision proved to be right for India Women at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. The opening pair of Smriti Mandaha (149) and Shafali put on 292 runs for the first opening wicket before the former was dismissed. However, 20-year-old Shafali continued her superb form to bring the fastest Test double hundred in the red-ball format. It took 194 balls for the Indian opener to reach the feat and claim the record to her name.
