Former Australian spin wizard Brad Hogg has made a bold statement ahead of the first semifinal of the T20 World Cup 2024, being held in the West Indies and the USA. In the first semifinal, an unbeaten South Africa will take on Afghanistan at the Brian Lara Stadium, Tarouba, Trinidad on Wednesday (June 26, local time). Hogg feels if South Africa go past the Afghans -- who have beaten New Zealand and Australia in the ongoing 20-nation mega event -- then the Aiden Markram-led Proteas will go on to lift the coveted title in the final on Saturday (June 29) in Barbados.

Speaking before the semifinals, Hogg said in the Star Sports Press Room Show, "They are just spawning from here. It's amazing. I regard Hendricks as well, I really like him as a player. And then you've got to build a wall, they can build a nice spin. Especially with Klassen. I expect him to do really well against Afghanistan and get to the finals."

I don't plan on the big nations now, and I think they'll have to go out there and play it out again instead and just have that confidence to go with the final side. For me, if I get past that semi-final right, South Africa is going to win the final this year."

"I just think I've got the team balanced and I've got the aggression as well. I've got that kindness. I really like Markram as the captain. He is correct and very composed. Rohit Sharma was at his sizzling best as he tormented Australian bowlers in the final match of the Super 8 stage to put India in the driver's seat. Rohit smashed eight sixes and seven boundaries en route his 92-run innings off 41 deliveries. Every Australian bowler, bar Josh Hazlewood was hit to all parts of the park. Australia's premier strike bowler, Mitchell Starc faced the ultimate wrath of Rohit who smashed him for 29 runs in one over. During the innings, Rohit shattered Yuvraj Singh's record for the most sixes in an innings of a T20 World Cup match. Hitman also broke the record for the fastest fifty by a captain in T20 World Cup history, previously held by ex-Bangladesh skipper Mohammad Ashraful. Suryakumar Yadav, who batted briefly with Rohit in the middle, said it 'felt like a dream' watching the right dasher in full flow. "Felt like a dream (watching Rohit Sharma bat), he batted beautifully. We sat together and talked about it before the game and he (Rohit) showed us the way," said Suryakumar.
On Monday (June 24, local time), Afghanistan beat Bangladesh by 8 runs, in Kingstown, St. Vincent, in what was the last Super 8 encounter in the T20 World Cup. With this, they qualified for their maiden T20 WC semifinals. Rashid Khan-led Afghanistan had to win to join India from Group 1 in the semis whereas Australia needed a favour from Bangladesh to progress ahead (following a loss to India). In a low-scoring thriller, Afghanistan edged past the Bangla Tigers to create history. During the run-chase, Gulbadin Naib's apparent cramp came under scrutiny, which many deemed was a time-wasting tactic in the rain-marred contest.

During Bangladesh's chase of 116, there were many rain breaks. During the 12th over, Naib went down holding his leg while standing in the slip cordon just before a delivery was to be bowled by spinner Noor Ahmed. He did so soon after head coach Jonathan Trott signalled his players to slow down the game with rain set to reappear. Back then, Bangladesh were two runs behind in the DLS score. Thus, Trott wanted his side to slow it down with the possibility of Bangladesh taking the upper hand, had that delivery been bowled.

Thus, Naib fell on the ground which many felt was a time-waste tactic. Following this, there was a break due to rain, which led to Bangladesh's target ultimately being revised to 114 in 19 overs. On resumption, they folded for 105 in 17.5 overs. Naib's act, however, continued to be the talking point, especially after he returned to the field and claimed a wicket and also sprinted with his teammates post their famous win.

However, Rashid defended the all-rounder after the game.

'There was no massive difference'

After a tight win, Rashid said, "Well, he had some cramp, I don't know what happened to him and I don't know what's going on in social media but that doesn't matter. It's just an on-field injury which happens, the rain came and we just went off, it's not something [that] brought a massive difference in the game. We came back on field after five minutes and there was no massive difference. For me, it's just like a small injury happens, then you have to take some time."

Talking about the clash, Afghanistan made 115/5 after opting to bat first and rode on skipper Rashid and Naveen-ul-Haq's 4-fers to dismiss Bangladesh for 105.

They will now face South Africa in the first semifinal in Trinidad on Wednesday (June 26, local time).

It's just an on-field injury which happens, the rain came and we just went off, it's not something [that] brought a massive difference in the game. We came back on field after five minutes and there was no massive difference. For me, it's just like a small injury happens, then you have to take some time." Talking about the clash, Afghanistan made 115/5 after opting to bat first and rode on skipper Rashid and Naveen-ul-Haq's 4-fers to dismiss Bangladesh for 105. They will now face South Africa in the first semifinal in Trinidad on Wednesday (June 26, local time).

Thanks to Arshdeep, Australia could manage only 181/7 in 20 overs in a chase of 206 and lost the match by 24 runs.

"On the other end they see the runs are not coming and the asking rate is going high, so they take more risks against me. [There's a] chance always of getting a wicket there. So a lot of credit for my wickets goes to Jassi bhai."

As for the match, Arshdeep spoke about how the wind factor came into play when they made bowling plans from different ends.

"When we bowled from the end opposite to the pavilion, we got a lot of swing. From the other end, bowling against the wind… the batters were going to use the wind since the ball was travelling. T20 World Cup 2024: Afghanistan clinch historic semis spot with Bangladesh win; Australia knocked out

India beat Australia by 24 runs in Super 8 clash on Monday (June 24) to book a place in the semi-final of the ongoing 2024 T20 World Cup. Chasing a target of 206, Australia could manage only 181/7 in 20 overs.

Australia started the chase horribly, losing David Warner in the first over itself. Mitchell Marsh (37) and Travis Head then added 77 runs for the second wicket before Kuldeep Yadav broke the partnership in the 9th over.

Glenn Maxwell then played a handy innings of 20 off 12, adding 41 runs for the third wicket with Head before Kuldeep struck again. Australia then kept losing wickets at regular intervals as Indian bowlers kept the net run-rate in check despite Head's 43-ball 76.

For India, Arshdeep was the pick of the bowlers with 3/37 in four overs but it was Kuldeep's 2/24 which made the difference. Apart from them, Jasprit Bumrah and Axar Patel also took one wicket each.

Rohit, however, went berserk after that, hitting 51 runs in the powerplay including 29 off Mitchell Starc in the third over of the innings. India finished the first six overs at 60/1. Rohit also reached the fifty in 19 balls - the third fastest for an Indian in T20 World Cups.

Marcus Stoinis then broke the 87-run partnership for the second wicket between Rishabh Pant (15) and Rohit. Stoinis dismissed Pant on the last ball of the eighth over with India at 93 runs.

Starc eventually dismissed Sharma in the 12th over of the innings on a personal score of 92 off just 41 balls.

After Rohit's dismissal, Suryakumar Yadav (31 off 16), Shivam Dube (8 off 22) and Hardik Pandya (27 off 17 not out) kept the Indian innings going.

The 2007 T20 World Cup winners eventually finished with a huge total of 205/5 in 20 overs.

For Australia, Hazlewood was exceptional with 1/14 in four overs while rest of the four bowlers have runs at an economy of at least 10.25. Starc and Stoinis were the two wicket takers apart from Hazlewood with two wickets each.

T20 World Cup 2024: Rohit, bowlers star as India beat Australia in Super 8 to enter semis

Axar Patel plucked a stunner out of thin air to bring India back in the contest against Australia, defending a total of 206 in the penultimate Group-1, Super 8 match of the T20 World Cup.

Chasing the challenging target, Australia were off to a poor start as David Warner edged one straight to Suryakumar Yadav, standing at first slip in the opening over by Arshdeep Singh. However, captain Mitch March and Travis Head joined forces and immediately started landing the counter-punches.

When it looked like the game was running away from India, Kuldeep Yadav bowled a flatter one on middle and leg in the ninth over which was smashed to Axar, stationed at deep backward square leg.

The all-rounder could not judge the ball early but adjusted himself and jumped at the right moment to not only grab the catch but also land safely so that the ball did not lob out of his hands.

T20 World Cup 2024, IND vs AUS: WATCH - Axar Patel takes one-hand STUNNING catch to dismiss Marsh

India skipper Rohit Sharma got furious on wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant during the Super 8 match against Australia on Monday (June 24). Rohit's reaction came after Pant didn't attempt to take a catch in Australia's chase.

The incident happened in the second over of the Aussie innings when Australia skipper Mitchell Marsh fended a bouncer by Jasprit Bumrah awkwardly to leg gully position. Pant initially went after the ball but stopped mid-way and the ball dropped on the ground.

Rohit was clearly not happy with this effort and let his frustration known immediately. Have a look at the video below:

T20 World Cup 2024: Chris Jordan, Jos Buttler blow away USA as England book semi-final spot

Pacer Chris Jordan became the first England bowler to take a hattrick in T20 Internationals as he destroyed the USA lower order during the Super 8 clash in Barbados on Sunday (Jun 23).

The right-arm speedster was shoehorned into the playing XI due to the indifferent form of Mark Wood but showed his class by ripping through the inexperienced yet dogged US batting lineup. The milestone was all the more special for Jordan as it came at Jordan's birthplace.

"Unbelievable feeling (to take the hattrick), was good to restrict them. Getting it (hattrick) at a special place is always nice. Glad I was able to hit on the target. Just finished it off towards the end," said Jordan.

"We summed up the conditions pretty well, we knew they will came hard at us in the powerplay, USA have been playing well in the tournament. Rashid set up the game for us," he added.

On Saturday (June 22, local time), Afghanistan stunned Australia by 21 runs in a crucial Super 8 clash at the ongoing T20 World Cup, in West Indies and the USA. Locking horns at the Arnos Vale Ground, Kingstown, St Vincent. Posting a moderate 148/6, riding on openers Rahmatullah Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zadran's fifties, Afghanistan dismissed the Aussies for a paltry 127 in 19.2 overs courtesy of Gulbadin Naib's 4 for 20 and Naveen-ul-Haq's 3 for 20 to take their side to a famous win and stay alive in the race for the semifinals. Soon after this result, a Pakistani reporter came up with a bizzare remark on social media platform X, formerly Twitter. Such was the reporter's claim that veteran Indian off-spinner R Ashwin jumped in and gave him a earful.

The Pakistani journalist, named Wajahat Kazmi, claimed that Afghanistan can beat any team in the world but India, for 'IPL contracts'. This led to Ashwin coming up with an epic response, also bringing in the social media platform's owner Elon Musk in his post. Ashwin wrote, "I can’t tell u what to do @elonmusk but I should certainly have the right to decide who enters my house. My timeline my decision."

My timeline my decision." Also read: T20 World Cup 2024: Explained!
