Shubman Gill has turned out to be the Board of Control for Cricket in India's (BCCI) top contender to lead India in the upcoming tour of Zimbabwe, after the T20 World Cup. Gill was part of the Rohit Sharma-led India's T20 WC squad, named among the reserves, before being released. The right-hander is being considered to lead the Men in Blue in the tour of the African nation after Hardik Pandya and Suryakumar Yadav reportedly declined to take part in the tour. India will tour Zimbabwe for a five-match T20I series starting on July 6.

As per a report in the Indian Express, the decision to consider Gill as the Indian captain for the Zimbabwe tour came after Hardik and Surya's refusal to take part in the tour. Many senior players such as Rohit, Virat Kohli, Ravindra Jadeja, Jasprit Bumrah, Hardik and Surya are expected to take a break post the ongoing T20 WC, in West Indies and the USA. Hence, Gill's name came up to lead the national side in Zimbabwe, where several youngsters will also be tested.

Gill leading contender to lead India after Hardik Pandya, Suryakumar Yadav decline Zimbabwe tour: Report

Jasprit Bumrah has been in top form for Team India in the ongoing T20 World Cup, in West Indies and the USA. In the mega event, Rohit Sharma-led India are unbeaten, after six games, and Bumrah is one of the main reasons for Men in Blue's sensational run so far. In six matches, Bumrah has 10 wickets at an average of 6.5. He was the Player-of-the-Match in India's wins versus Ireland and Pakistan. Thus, West Indies legend Curtly Ambrose opened up on the Indian pacer and also made a blunt take on whether Bumrah can help India win the coveted title.

Ambrose lauded Bumrah and said on Sports Tak, "Jasprit Bumrah is a different bowler and I am his big fan. I love watching him bowl because he is unorthodox and not a traditional type of bowler who comes with a long run-up and bowls. He takes a short run-up and it looks like he is walking. Whatever he does after that has a huge impact and he has been doing a great job for Indian cricket. He can swing the ball and generate pace when he wants. So he is a very skilled bowler."

'So he cannot do anything alone'

Ambrose added, "He has the skill and ability but this is a team game. So he cannot do anything alone. If Bumrah does well and does not get the support of the other bowlers. Apart from this, if the batter does not score runs then India can lose. Therefore, this is a team game but despite this, he can play a big and important role in the victory. I believe that Rohit Sharma is a great captain and so is Virat Kohli. Apart from this, Rishabh Pant is a very dangerous player, so Team India looks like a very balanced side."

Apart from Bumrah, India have had contributions coming from Rishabh Pant, Suryakumar Yadav, Hardik Pandya, Axar Patel, Arshdeep Singh and the likes. Surya won India the game versus Afghanistan whereas Hardik was the Player-of-the-Match versus the Bangla Tigers.

T20 WC: 'He has skill and ability but...': WI legend's take on whether Bumrah can help India win the title

Rohit Sharma-led Team India has been on a roll in the ongoing T20 World Cup, being held in West Indies and the USA. Along with South Africa, they are the only unbeaten side in the 20-nation tournament and will face Australia in a crucial Super 8 encounter, from Group 1, in St. Lucia on Monday (June 24). A win will help India reach the semifinals and also extend their unbeaten streak to seven games in the tournament (including a washout). The one-time winners can also qualify for the semis even with a loss versus Australia.

From Group 1, India are firm favourites to top the group and qualify ahead. After a loss to Afghanistan, Australia have to beat India at all costs whereas Afghanistan are the third contender. The Afghans face Bangladesh on Tuesday (June 25, IST), after the India-Australia clash, and both sides have a chance to go ahead (with a very slim chance for the Bangla Tigers).

A win or a washout versus the Aussies will confirm India's top-spot finish in the group. If a scenario arises where India, Australia and Afghanistan are tied with four points and the Rohit Sharma-led side's Net Run Rate (NRR) is also severely affected, they will still finish second (their elimination is very unlikely; only if Australia and Afghanistan win by big margins). Thus, here is decoding who India will face in the semifinals.

T20 World Cup 2024: Explained! South Africa or England? Who could be India's opposition in semifinals?

Aiden Markram-led South Africa qualified for the semifinals of the T20 World Cup, from Group 2, following a thrilling three-wicket win (DLS method) over co-hosts West Indies in the Super 8s on Sunday (June 23, local time) in Antigua. With defending champions England having already qualified from the same group, the clash between Proteas and the co-hosts became a virtual quarterfinal where the former kept their nerves to chase down 123 in a rain-affected clash. After qualifying, Markram made it clear that Proteas won't be 'brainwashed' despite semis berth.

After the match, Markram said, "A lot of relief to get through to the semi-final. Not going to be brainwashed by that. We would have liked to be more convincing with bat in hand. After the rain break, the wicket was playing nicely. Did not get the partnerships to then kill the game. Tried to kill it (the chase) too early.
Kuldeep leads India to win

Chasing 197 runs to win, Bangladesh got off to a promising start before they lost wickets at consistent intervals. Tanzid Hasan (29) and skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto (40) built the only meaningful partnership of the innings. Rishad Hossain (24 off 10) was the only other batter to help Bangladesh stay in the chase before Kuldeep’s dominance with the ball. His three wickets helped India establish a firm grip on the match with both Arshdeep Singh and Jasprit Bumrah also scalping two wickets each.

What happened in the Indian innings?

Asked to bat first, after the disappointing dismissal of Rohit, Virat Kohli also failed to impress as he was dismissed for 37 off 28 after the powerplay ended. Suryakymar Yadav then had an entertaining couple of minutes in the middle having scored a six on the first ball of his innings and then was dismissed on the very next ball by Tanzim Hasan Sakib. T20 World Cup: Pakistan assistant coach opens up on match-fixing allegations

Afghanistan skipper Rashid Khan was full of excitement after beating Australia in Super 8 stage match of the ongoing 2024 T20 World Cup on Saturday (June 22). The win opened up Group 1 which has India and Bangladesh as other two teams.

The win means there are multiple scenarios for all three teams to qualify for the semis apart from India which are all but sure to enter last four after two back-to-back wins in the knockout stage.

Talking about the game, Afghanistan batted first and scored 148 in 20 overs which skipper Rashid believed was a good total.

"140 was a good total on this wicket. We didn't finish as well as we should have."

T20 World Cup 2024: 'We didn't finish...,' Afghanistan skipper Rashid Khan after historic win vs Australia

The T20 World Cup continues to deliver as Afghanistan stunned the cricketing world on Saturday (Jun 22) by beating Australia to throw open Group 1 of the Super 8 stage. With India and Bangladesh in the group as well, the fate of the teams qualifying for the semifinals will only be decided after the final round of matches.

Here we take a look at the different permutations and combinations that could decide the fate of two qualifying teams.

If India wins

India currently sit top of the points table with two wins and a healthy run rate of +2.425. They square up against Australia in the final match of the stage and a win would ensure a definite place in the top-4. A loss would not mean the end of the world either, provided the Men-in-Blue don't lose by a big margin.

If Australia and Afghanistan win

In case, Australia floor India and Afghanistan follow suit by beating Bangladesh, three teams will finish on four points and the Net Run Rate (NRR) will come into play.

If defending the total, Australia win by a margin of a solitary run, Afghanistan will need a 36-run margin to move ahead of the Down Under side on NRR.

If Australia win a run-chase off the last ball, Afghanistan will have to win their game in 15.4 overs or sooner (assuming first-innings scores of 160).

Also read | ‘It’s not an upset’ – Cricket world reacts to Afghanistan’s historic win over Australia in Super 8s of T20 WC

Can India be knocked out?

While it looks unlikely, there is a scenario where India can be knocked out of the tournament despite winning two matches. If both Australia and Afghanistan win their matches by big margins, India may have to book a returning ticket.

Math dictates that Australia will need to overcome India by 41 runs to go past their NRR while Afghanistan will have to subdue Bangladesh by at least 83 runs.

What about Bangladesh?

The Bangla Tigers have a tall mountain to climb, especially given their inconsistent form in the tournament. The team will need to win by 31 runs to leapfrog Afghanistan's NRR, but they will also need India to annihilate Australia by at least 55 runs, to finish second in the group.

The final round of matches in Group 1 will be played on Monday (Jun 24) with India vs Australia taking place early in the day at the Daren Sammy Cricket Ground in Gros Islet, Saint Lucia. Meanwhile, Afghanistan will face Bangladesh at the Arnos Vale Stadium in Kingstown.

Buttler with a moment of magic

On the fourth ball of the 14th over, Mark Wood bowled an offset delivery on the leg side resulting in a wide ball. The extend of the wide was such that Buttler behind the stumps had to struggle to get to the ball which was seen as an opportunity by batter Klaasen (striker end) and David Miller (non-striker end) to run for a single. While it looked a casual single with Buttler struggling to get to the ball having lost control initially, he did not give up on chasing the ball.

As a result, Klaasen who thought it was a simple single was deceived with a perfect throw from Buttler at the non-striker's end. The throw resulted in a run out as Klaasen was yet to reach his crease and was left ball-watching. David Miller, running at the striker’s end was also left helpless as he realised Klaasen was run out at the other end.

Quinton de Kock gets batting reprieve

On the second ball of the ninth over, De Kock hit a long shot in the midwicket region which was caught by Mark Wood. The catch looked like a simple one considering Wood had enough time to get closer to the ball and complete the process. While on-field umpires looked convinced and gave De Kock out, the South African batter refused to walk out and asked help from the third umpire.

On-field umpires then took their time and asked third umpire Joel Wilson to make the final decision. Wilson took time and saw repeated replays after which he concluded that Wood did not catch the ball cleanly and the ball hit the turf before getting into his hand. As a result, Quinton de Kock was given not out and he went on to score 65 off 38 deliveries.

England, South Africa and the West Indies in the hunt

At the time of writing, South Africa (4 points) and West Indies (2 points) are in pole position to reach the last four. England’s defeat to South Africa on Friday (June 21) made matters interesting as there could be a scenario where all three teams could finish with same points. In this case, Net Run Rate (NRR) will become a huge factor in determining the position of the teams.

So the real advantage will lie with South Africa and West Indies who play their head-to-head match after England as they will know the equation of what they need to reach the semifinal. USA on the other hand could still reach the semifinal if they beat England by a big margin and West Indies lose to England by another big margin while taking a hit on the NRR.

England T20 World Cup semifinal equations

England must beat the USA by a big margin and hope either West Indies or South Africa lose to the West Indies while ending with a poor NRR.

England can still qualify even if they lose but must hope West Indies lose to South Africa by a big margin and end with poor NRR.

In case of a washout against the USA, England should hope that South Africa beat West Indies.

South Africa T20 World Cup semifinal equations

A win for South Africa against the West Indies will see them qualify for the semifinals.

Bumrah jolts Afghanistan

Chasing 182 runs to win, Bumrah struck gold with his golden arm having dismissed Rahmanullah Gurbaz on the second ball of his spell. T20 World Cup 2024: Jasprit Bumrah jolts Afghanistan with early wickets as India tighten grip over contest

Australia continued their winning run in the 2024 T20 World Cup, in West Indies and the USA, with a comfortable 28-run win (DLS method) over Bangladesh in the Super 8 clash on Thursday (June 20, local time). Opting to bowl first at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium, North Sound, Antigua, Mitchell Marsh & Co. rode on Pat Cummins' hattrick (3 for 29) and Adam Zampa's 2 for 24 to restrict Bangladesh to 140/8 before they were 100-2, in 11.2 overs, when rain stopped play. By being way ahead in terms of the DLS par score, the 2021 champions, thus, picked up two crucial points in the Super 8 encounter.

With the ball, Australia meant business from the word go. Mitchell Starc removed opener Tanzid Hasan to create history, becoming the highest wicket-taker in World Cups (ODI and T20I) by taking his tally to 95. Zampa, Glenn Maxwell and Marcus Stoinis also chipped in before Cummins' three successive scalps, which made him only the second Aussie to take a T20 WC hat-trick, dented the Bangla Tigers further.

Chasing a modest 141, David Warner and Travis Head were in their element from the beginning. The two southpaws made the most of the powerplays as Australia were well-placed at 59 for no loss in six overs. With rain making its presence felt during the mid-innings, the Australian camp had an eye on the DLS par score and played at their aggressive best.

When rain returned during the 12th over, Australia were way ahead of the DLS par score (which required them to be at 72 for 2) as they won by 28 runs. Warner remained unbeaten on a 35-ball 53 along with Maxwell (6-ball 14*).

Thus, Australia remain unbeaten in the 20-nation tournament, along with India and South Africa, and will now face Afghanistan at the Arnos Vale Ground, Kingstown, St Vincent on Saturday (June 22, local time). Australia vs Bangladesh: Pat Cummins becomes second Australian to claim a T20 World Cup hat-trick

West Indies legend Brian Lara came in support of Virat Kohli, who is struggling for runs in the ongoing T20 World Cup, in West Indies and the USA. On Thursday (June 20), India faced Afghanistan in their first Super 8 encounter, at the Kensington Oval, Bridgetown, Barbados, where Kohli just managed a run-a-ball 24 during the Rohit Sharma-led side's convincing 47-run win in defence of 181/8. While there were a lot of positives for Team India, Kohli's form remains a worry. However, Lara feels the Indian team management and fans need to be patient with him as there are still a lot of games left in the 20-nation event.

So far, Kohli has just managed 29 runs in four outings in the tournament. He looked set versus Afghanistan before being removed by Rashid Khan, in an attempt to go for a big shot. Lara, however, feels 'he spent some time out there' and it will hold him in good stead going forward.

Lara said on Star Sports, "24 of 24, you can say that’s not great but the most important thing is that he spent some time out there. India has got one step closer to winning this trophy. I believe that Virat Kohli is just gonna go from strength to strength as he comes down to the Caribbean. He’s going to Antigua next, you’re gonna see him go out there and plough and plough, he’s gonna get runs. When he gets into full swing, it’s a different story. We just have to be very patient with him, we’re gonna see a lot of him there’s still a lot of games left in this World Cup."

Ahead of the India-Afghanistan tie, Morkel told Star Sports, "Don’t worry about Virat. Class players find a way to score runs at the right time. So far, he has managed just 1, 4 and 0 in three outings and will be desperate to get going in the Super 8s. He has a solid record versus Afghanistan in T20Is, amassing 201 runs in five innings at an average of 67 with a best of 122 not out. T20 WC: 'I would be nervous...' - Former SA pacer on Virat Kohli's poor run ahead of Ind vs Afg Super 8 clash

Former Australian captain Michael Clarke has backed Virat Kohli despite the Indian star batter's rut in the ongoing T20 World Cup, in the West Indies and USA. In four games, Kohli has managed only five runs in three outings as he struggled to get going for the one-time winners in their USA leg. Ahead of India's Super 8 game versus Afghanistan, Clarke feels Kohli is 'one step closer to making a big one' in the mega tournament and he will step up in crunch games.

Speaking on ESPNCricinfo's Around The Wicket, the 43-year-old backed calls to promote Kohli as an opener, along with captain Rohit Sharma, at the expense of Yashasvi Jaiswal.

He stated, "He had a great IPL, so you can understand their reason for doing that. I wouldn't concerned about 3 low scores. All that means to me he is one step closer to making a big one. It's the most important stage as well where the best players usually stand up."

Clarke further opined that India need not tinker with their opening combination due to Kohli's low returns.

'One step closer...' - Former Aussie captain unfazed by Virat Kohli's lack of runs in T20 World Cup

Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is unlikely to take any immediate action on Babar Azam’s leadership role as they intend to focus on a reshuffle in the selection committee. Pakistan were eliminated in the group stage of the T20 World Cup where they lost to India and the co-hosts USA while they laboured their way to a win against Ireland. However, the PCB intends to shuffle the pack of selectors rather than focus on Babar’s captaincy performance.

Babar unlikely to face immediate action

One of the main reasons Babar will not face immediate action is because Pakistan are not in white-ball action until November. With time in hand, the board intends to keep the matter cool for the moment and instead make changes to the selection committee. The seven-member pack consisting of Wahab Riaz is unlikely to be retained with fresh faces expected to be included.

The existing selection committee came into existence after the ODI World Cup in India when Pakistan suffered a league stage exit. Inzamam-ul-Haq resigned from his post when Pakistan were unable to reach the top four of the ODI World Cup in November 2023 with Wahab and Co. being given the charge. However, they are unlikely to be retained as PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi said at the time that the committee would "make a majority decision based around debate and argument to reach a satisfactory conclusion".

Babar Azam unlikely to face immediate action after poor T20 WC show; PCB to shuffle selection committee

Defending champions England rode on Phil Salt's 87*, Jonny Bairstow's 48* and a disciplined death-over bowling to beat unbeaten co-hosts West Indies by eight wickets in the second game of the Super 8s in the ongoing T20 World Cup on Wednesday (June 19, local time). After restricting the Rovman Powell-led Windies for 180/4, thanks to Adil Rashid's 1 for 21 and Jofra Archer's 3 for 34, Jos Buttler & Co. made merry courtesy of Salt's brilliant knock and Bairstow's counterattack. However, it was the 16th over of England's run-chase which made heads turn as Romario Shepherd conceded 30 due to Salt's masterful strokeplay.

Talking about the 16th over, England needed 40 off the last 30 deliveries when Shepherd came to bowl. The pacer, in his second over, was clueless against Salt's onslaught as the right-hander smashed the ball to all parts of the ground. He punished the full as well as the short-length deliveries, timed one above the keeper's head for a four and smashed some maximums to send the English fans into a frenzy. As a result, 30 came off the six deliveries -- including three sixes -- as England killed the contest.

Talking about the WI innings, several batters such as Nicholas Pooran, captain Powell and Sherfane Rutherford came up with vital contributions but none made a solid impact. Thus, the two-time winners managed a par score in St Lucia, posting 180/4. In reply, England openers Buttler and Salt added 67 for the first wicket and while they were reduced to 84 for 2, Bairstow-Salt's unbroken 97-run third-wicket stand helped them win in 17.3 overs.

With this win, England started the Super 8s of the mega event, being held in the West Indies and the USA, in style. At the post-match presentation, Player-of-the-Match Salt said, "I like batting here, but I'm more happy to have contributed to a good team win. It was tough against spin in the middle overs, but I knew pace would come at some stage, the wind was blowing at one end, there was one short boundary and I backed myself to take on him (on his 30-run over against Shepherd). There was a period where I didn't face too many balls, the boundaries had dried up, but Jonny (Bairstow) took the pressure off me with his calculated hitting, his knock was very crucial."

Former South Africa captain AB de Villiers has urged the Indian team management to send Virat Kohli at No. 3 ahead of their Super 8 clash versus Afghanistan in the T20 World Cup. In the ongoing 20-nation tournament, in West Indies and the USA, Rohit Sharma-led Men in Blue will face Afghanistan in their opening Super 8 clash at the Kensington Oval in Barbados on Thursday (June 20). Before the tie, de Villiers requested India to not open with Kohli-Rohit and drop the former to No. 3, his original spot.

Kohli has been opening the innings for India in the ongoing ICC event. Riding on the back of a successful run in IPL 2024, where he ended as the Orange Cap winner by making 741 runs for Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) as an opener, Kohli was promoted up the order for India; resulting in Yashasvi Jaiswal's ouster. However, the 35-year-old only managed five runs in the three outings during the group stage of the T20 WC. Thus, ABD has reckoned that Kohli is ideal for No. 3 where he is the best in soaking pressure in the middle overs.

On his YouTube channel, De Villiers pointed out, "I have always said please bat Virat at number three. Especially in better wickets that they will play now, Virat is the go-to guy at number three. He can play the attacking game and also pull back and absorb the pressure if necessary. He is the best player in the world in the middle overs. I do not see any reasons (for opening)."
