<p>Former Indian opener Gautam Gambhir will appear for an interview for the role of the head coach of the Indian men’s cricket team on Tuesday (June 18). The Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) will be interviewing him in Mumbai today. The veteran is being considered the frontrunner to take up the job from Rahul Dravid, who will sign off from the top post after the end of the ongoing T20 World Cup in West Indies and USA.&nbsp;Along with Gambhir, another candidate will also be interviewed for the role of the selector.</p>

<p>Gambhir's name started doing the rounds, especially after Kolkata Knight Riders' (KKR) triumph in IPL 2024. Under Gambhir's mentorship, Shreyas Iyer-led Kolkata won their third IPL title, the first in 10 years, and the former cricketer's involvement in making strategies and team combinations was lauded by many. Since then, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has reportedly been keen on roping Gambhir to replace Dravid.</p>

<p>Asked to bat first, it was the fourth over of the West Indies innings that saw Pooran run riot as he smashed 36 runs, repeating the feat of Yuvraj Singh from the 2007 edition of the T20 World Cup. However, unlike Yuvraj, Pooran faced seven balls and had the luxury of a free hit in the over bowled by Azmatullah Omarzai of Afghanistan.</p>

<p>The first ball was smashed for a six before a four was hit on the next ball which was also a no ball. The free hit ball was wide and resulted in four byes which saw the free hit stay intact for the second legal delivery of the over. On the free hit delivery, Pooran was bowled but stayed on the field as the batter could not be out. This saw 16 runs yielded from 2 balls with six extra runs added in the process for the West Indies</p>

There’s no bigger honour than coaching your national team. You are representing 140 crore Indians and more across the globe as well and when you represent India, how can it get bigger than that?” said Gambhir when quizzed about the prospective job. T20 World Cup 2024: Dutchman Sybrand Engelbrecht's SUPERMAN save in farewell match goes viral - WATCH

<p>Former Pakistan all-rounder Shoaib Malik has advised Babar Azam to give up on limited-overs captaincy in order to focus on his batting.</p>

<p>The Men-in-Green were knocked out of the T20 World Cup in the group stage but managed to walk away with pride intact by stuttering to a three-wicket win against Ireland in their final league match on Sunday (Jun 16).&nbsp;</p>

<p>Speaking after the match, Malik cited his example and how he had refused captaincy back in 2009, and suggested that Babar follow a similar path.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>

<p>"I think I would immediately resign from the captaincy and focus on my cricket. It has happened to me. I was asked to be captain again in 2009/10 and I did not accept it because I wanted to focus on my cricket," Malik said on a Ten Sports Pakistan show.<br />
<br />
"If I was Babar I would do the exact same thing. Babar's numbers reflect that as well. If he can improve, be better for the country, then do it."</p>

<p>Malik also pointed out Babar's tendency to do everything by himself in the captain's role, which did not augur well for the team's long-term future.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"A captain should create players for you. Babar has captained in 147 internationals, and has captained in 6 ICC tournaments, but he has not won any.</p>

<p>"Babar has captained in 127 white ball games and he has not rested himself in any of them. This is a big question mark. I think there was just one game where he rested himself and that too where the board asked him to," he added.</p>

<p><a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/if-i-have-to-leave-captaincy-babar-azam-opens-up-on-his-future-after-pakistans-exit-from-t20-wc-732419"><strong>Also read |&nbsp;‘If I have to leave captaincy…’ – Babar Azam opens up on his future after Pakistan’s exit from T20 WC</strong></a></p>

The Men-in-Green were knocked out of the T20 World Cup in the group stage but managed to walk away with pride intact by stuttering to a three-wicket win against Ireland in their final league match on Sunday (Jun 16).

Former Pakistan all-rounder Shoaib Malik has advised Babar Azam to give up on limited-overs captaincy in order to focus on his batting. The Men-in-Green were knocked out of the T20 World Cup in the group stage but managed to walk away with pride intact by stuttering to a three-wicket win against Ireland in their final league match on Sunday (Jun 16). Speaking after the match, Malik cited his example and how he had refused captaincy back in 2009, and suggested that Babar follow a similar path. "I think I would immediately resign from the captaincy and focus on my cricket. It has happened to me. I was asked to be captain again in 2009/10 and I did not accept it because I wanted to focus on my cricket," Malik said on a Ten Sports Pakistan show. "If I was Babar I would do the exact same thing. Babar's numbers reflect that as well. If he can improve, be better for the country, then do it." Malik also pointed out Babar's tendency to do everything by himself in the captain's role, which did not augur well for the team's long-term future. "A captain should create players for you. Babar has captained in 147 internationals, and has captained in 6 ICC tournaments, but he has not won any. "Babar has captained in 127 white ball games and he has not rested himself in any of them. This is a big question mark. I think there was just one game where he rested himself and that too where the board asked him to," he added. "When I gave up the captaincy [in 2023], I thought that I shouldn't be doing it now, that's why I left it and I announced it myself," Babar said. "Then when they gave it back to me, it was the decision of the PCB. When I go back, we will discuss all that has happened here. And if I have to leave the captaincy, I will announce it openly. I will not hide behind anything. Whatever happens will happen in the open. But for now, I have not thought about it. It is eventually PCB's decision," he added. Under Babar's captaincy, Pakistan had also crashed out of the group stage of the 50-over World Cup in India last year. (With inputs from agencies)

<p>It is not good news for English&nbsp;cricket fans as their hopes of qualifying for the T20 World Cup Super 8 stage could take a real hit on Saturday (June 15). If the situation does not&nbsp;change, England who are the defending champions of the T20 World Cup will bow out and join the likes of Pakistan, Sri Lanka and New Zealand who have already packed&nbsp;their bags.</p>

If these sets of equations are met England will reach five points from four matches and qualify for the Super 8. T20 World Cup 2024: 'His bad patch means...,' Shivam Dube on Virat Kohli's lack of runs in league stage

<p>Team India has enjoyed their time in the United States during the ongoing T20 World Cup as they now look forward to the Super 8 stage of the tournament having won all three matches so far. However, not all is good in the camp after Shubman Gill’s latest social media act raised a debate among cricket fans. While reports have also stated that Punjab-born players are likely to be sent back home due to disciplinary reasons, this is not exactly the case.</p>

<h2><strong>Gill-Rohit become talking point</strong></h2>

<p>On Saturday (June 15), social media users spotted that Gill unfollowed Rohit on Instagram which raised multiple questions on the duos relationship. One of&nbsp;the taking point was Gill’s indiscipline and frustration of being dropped from the T20 World Cup squad.</p>

<p>It was reported that he was unhappy with Rohit’s choice of picking Yashasvi Jaiswal ahead of him for not participating actively in the practice sessions. It is worth noting that, Gill is part of the Indian team as a reserve player and not a permanent player, meaning he could not participate in the T20 World Cup unless a batter has been ruled out.</p>

T20 World Cup 2024: Fans react after Babar Azam's Pakistan crash out in group stage

<p>Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is all set to pull the trigger on the club’s current structure after they faced elimination from the T20 World Cup at the group stage. Pakistan led by Babar Azam was eliminated from the T20 World Cup after&nbsp;USA got a point when their match against Ireland was called off due to rain on Friday (June 14). It is understood that PCB will hold a review of the performances&nbsp;with captain Babar set to be axed from his role.</p>

<h2><strong>Pakistan players under scrutiny</strong></h2>

<p>"There could be a reassessment of the central contracts and the players could find their salaries and fees being cut if the Chairman decides to react strongly to the team's recent woeful performances," a source told news agency PTI.</p>

<p>It is also reported that the players will be fined heavily for not helping the side advance from the group which consisted of the USA, Ireland and Canada. A&nbsp;horror start to the tournament saw Pakistan lose to the USA which was coupled with a defeat to India last Sunday. On the other hand, the USA advanced to the Super 8 with wins against Pakistan, Canada and a draw with Ireland which saw them accumulate five points from four matches.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The team’s dressing room atmosphere is also being blamed as the primary reason for Pakistan’s downfall. According to multiple reports, Babar Azam and Shaheen Shah Afridi hardly speak to each other with other players being divided into different groups in the dressing room which has raised the friction in the camp.</p>

Pakistan players under scrutiny "There could be a reassessment of the central contracts and the players could find their salaries and fees being cut if the Chairman decides to react strongly to the team's recent woeful performances," a source told news agency PTI. It is also reported that the players will be fined heavily for not helping the side advance from the group which consisted of the USA, Ireland and Canada. A horror start to the tournament saw Pakistan lose to the USA which was coupled with a defeat to India last Sunday. On the other hand, the USA advanced to the Super 8 with wins against Pakistan, Canada and a draw with Ireland which saw them accumulate five points from four matches. According to multiple reports, Babar Azam and Shaheen Shah Afridi hardly speak to each other with other players being divided into different groups in the dressing room which has raised the friction in the camp. Another big name bows out After Friday’s result, Pakistan joined Sri Lanka and New Zealand in the teams being knocked out of the T20 World Cup. Like Pakistan, Sri Lanka’s fate was also decided by rain when their match against Nepal was called off, leading to points being shared. New Zealand on the other hand will have themselves to blame having lost to Afghanistan and the West Indies. England could also join the big trio if Scotland beat Australia in their final group game. So far six teams have secured qualification to the Super 8 stage of the T20 World Cup including India, the USA, Afghanistan, South Africa, West Indies and Australia. India will be paired with Australia, Afghanistan and most likely Bangladesh in the Super 8 stage.

PCB plans for major changes in Pakistan team structure after 'horror exit' from T20 World Cup 2024

<p>Veteran New Zealand pacer Trent Boult has announced that he's playing in his last T20 World Cup. The comments came on the back of New Zealand's exit from the tournament in the group stage. This is the first time since 2014 edition that New Zealand won't be featuring in semi-finals.</p>

<p>"Speaking on behalf of myself, this will be my last T20 World Cup, so yeah that's all I have to say," Boult said after Kiwis beat Uganda by nine wickets in Trinidad.</p>

<p>Pakistan batter Ahmed Shehzad has blamed Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Mohsin Naqvi's two mistakes for the team's poor performance at the ongoing T20 World Cup 2024. The comments were made after Pakistan were knocked out of the tournament following abandonment of Ireland vs USA fixture due to rain.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"Since becoming the PCB chairman, Mohsin Naqvi has made two big blunders. First, by re-appointing Babar as captain. Secondly, making Wahab Riaz as chief selector. He has been very unprofessionalism in his decision making and management. You'll be forced not to remove these 7-8 players who have been part of groupism within the team. If you don't make crackdown on these players, it will be harsh on those who will get sacked," said Shehzad on a chat with news outlet Geo news.</p>

<p>India will be taking on Canada in their final group stage fixture of the ongoing T20 World Cup 2024 on Saturday (June 15) in Lauderhill, Florida. With 85% chance of rain at the venue, the game could get washed out just like the Ireland vs USA game which resulted in&nbsp;Pakistan crashing out of the tournament.</p>

<p>As for the match, India could give their bench strength a chance, having already secured a top eight berth. India won three back-to-back matches to get through the group stage with the same playing XI. In the match against Canada, they could make a couple of changes which might see Sanju Samson and Kuldeep Yadav getting some game time.</p>

<p>The game will also be the last chance for Virat Kohli to get his form back ahead of the crucial knockout stage.</p>

<p>Kohli, who has opened alongside skipper Rohit Sharma in the three league matches, has scored a mere 4, 1 and 0, respectively. Kohli's record in Lauderhill is also not up to his standards, scoring just 63 runs in three innings at an average of 21.</p>

<p>Another batter who might be itching to get some runs is Hardik Pandya. While the all-rounder has been very effective with the ball, his batting could be a cause of concern for India in the knockout stage.</p>

<p>As for Canada, it will be their last chance to put up another good performance. They had scored 194 against USA, won against Ireland and gave a scare to Pakistan. Canada's batting unit is led by Aaron Johnson who has already become his country's second highest run scorer despite making his debut in 2022 only.</p>

<p>Canada will be hoping to put up a fight with both bat and ball in their first ever T20I match against powerhouse India. The match will start 8 p.m. Indian Standard Time.</p>

<p>Sri Lanka have been officially knocked out of the T20 World Cup 2024 after Bangladesh beat the Netherlands by 25 runs in St Vincent on Thursday (June 13). The win which saw Bangladesh reach four points in Group D meant that Sri Lanka could no longer finish in the top three, thus being the first high-profile name to face elimination from the tournament. Bangladesh’s win also means that they need only a point against Nepal in their final match to book a place in the Super 8.</p>

<p>Having set a target of 160 runs to win for the Netherlands, Bangladesh bowlers came good to help their side win by 25 runs. Sybrand Engelbrecht was the top scorer for the Dutch side with 33 off 22 while Vikramjit Singh (26) and skipper Scott Edwards (25) also got starts before getting out. With no big innings and wickets falling consistently at one end, the match was won by Bangladesh as the Dutch managed only 134/8 in their 20 overs.</p>

<p>Rishad Hossain was the pick of the bowlers for the Netherlands as he ended with figures of 33/3 in four overs while Taskin Ahmed bagged two.</p>

<p>Earlier, Shakib Al Hasan’s 64-run innings laid the platform for the win while getting support from Tanzid Hasan (35). <p>The New York Strikers, the triumphant international franchise known for their outstanding season in the Abu Dhabi T10 and Legends Cricket Trophy, are slated to resume their journey in the upcoming editions. The Colombo Strikers are also meant to return in the forthcoming LPL 2024 (Lanka Premier League 2024) following the New York Strikers' success in international format. <p>Speaking on the impact of the current conditions on the T20 World Cup players, Yuvraj Singh, a member of the New York Strikers as well as the ambassador of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2024, shares, “I don’t think you need much experience for conditions. If you arrive early and adjust to the weather, the players have the required experience.”</p>

<p>In particular, Yuvraj Singh, a legendary cricket player, contributed greatly to the team's outstanding performances. During the Legends Cricket Trophy season 2 finals, Singh displayed flashes of his vintage stroke-making ability for his talented squad to succeed.</p>

<p>Remarking if the current World Cup can cause upsets, Yuvraj Singh shares, “A World Cup is about upsets. We have already seen a few upsets so far so no team can be taken for granted. The Super 8 is going to get interesting now and each team are in with a chance to qualify for the semis.”</p>

<p>Sharing thoughts about the World Cup being held in the United States, New York Strikers esteemed player Daniel Christian shares, “I think it has been a bit of a slow start for a lot of the teams to see. Witnessing the current conditions, the teams present will need to make every effort to perform well.”</p>

<p>“Seeing how everyone is simultaneously adjusting to the game regarding if the ball will spin and if the slow balls will hold up, the environment is incredibly fascinating. On the field, winning with a 200 or a 140 can’t be guaranteed,” remarked Daniel</p>

<p>The New York Superstar Strikers, who made their debut this past year, had an incredible journey as they went out with a full-out power play in the international season. To ensure they consistently delivered on the promise of maintaining an exciting game, some of the greatest legends in history, such as Chadwick Walton, Daniel Christian, Rahul Sharma, and Alviro Petersen, teamed up and leveraged their strengths to power the New York Strikers as the best.</p>

Yuvraj Singh and Daniel Christian, two distinguished members of the Strikers franchise who have participated in international tournaments, shared their thoughts on what they hope to see from the current T20 World Cup. Speaking on the impact of the current conditions on the T20 World Cup players, Yuvraj Singh, a member of the New York Strikers as well as the ambassador of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2024, shares, “I don’t think you need much experience for conditions. If you arrive early and adjust to the weather, the players have the required experience.” In particular, Yuvraj Singh, a legendary cricket player, contributed greatly to the team's outstanding performances. During the Legends Cricket Trophy season 2 finals, Singh displayed flashes of his vintage stroke-making ability for his talented squad to succeed. Remarking if the current World Cup can cause upsets, Yuvraj Singh shares, “A World Cup is about upsets. We have already seen a few upsets so far so no team can be taken for granted. The Super 8 is going to get interesting now and each team are in with a chance to qualify for the semis.” Sharing thoughts about the World Cup being held in the United States, New York Strikers esteemed player Daniel Christian shares, “I think it has been a bit of a slow start for a lot of the teams to see. Witnessing the current conditions, the teams present will need to make every effort to perform well.” “Seeing how everyone is simultaneously adjusting to the game regarding if the ball will spin and if the slow balls will hold up, the environment is incredibly fascinating. On the field, winning with a 200 or a 140 can’t be guaranteed,” remarked Daniel The New York Superstar Strikers, who made their debut this past year, had an incredible journey as they went out with a full-out power play in the international season. To ensure they consistently delivered on the promise of maintaining an exciting game, some of the greatest legends in history, such as Chadwick Walton, Daniel Christian, Rahul Sharma, and Alviro Petersen, teamed up and leveraged their strengths to power the New York Strikers as the best. Sagar Khanna, owner of the New York Strikers franchise, shared his encouragement, saying, "All team squads of the T20 World Cup have the unique ability to create memorable moments both on and off the field. We are looking forward to an outstanding T20 World Cup with exceptional performances from all the teams.” In an incredible display of strength and persistence, the New York Strikers squad quickly rose to the pinnacle of cricket success, accomplishing unmatched success in an exceptionally short amount of time. From first-ever finalists to defending champions, the New York Strikers will make their debuts in the second half of the year in the Lanka Premier League, Lanka T10, and Abu Dhabi T10.

<p>Former Australia spinner Brad Hogg has predicted an India versus Australia final in the ongoing 2024 T20 World Cup, being held in West Indies and the USA. Australia became the second team, after South Africa, to qualify for the Super 8&nbsp;whereas Rohit Sharma-led India followed the Aussies. While both are in different groups at present, the two heavyweights will be in Group 1 in the Super 8 round, locking horns on June 24 at the Daren Sammy National Cricket Stadium, Gros Islet, St Lucia. Before the clash, Hogg predicted an India-Australia T20 WC&nbsp;final on June 29 (in Bridgetown, Barbados).</p>

<h2><strong>'It sets it up for the possibility of Australia vs India in the final'</strong></h2>

<p>Hogg said on Star Sports, "In the Super 8s, Australia and India have got Bangladesh (yet to qualify) and Afghanistan and you expect both teams to beat Afghanistan and Bangladesh and move through to the semi-finals, hopefully, that does happen. It sets it up for the possibility of Australia and India in a grand final which I’d absolutely love to happen."</p>

<p>The 53-year-old was quick to name Australia as the favourites for their upcoming Super 8 clash versus India, mainly as they have already been playing in the West Indies.</p>

<p>Hogg opined, "But I think that first game between Australia and India in the super eights, the advantage would have to be to Australia because they’ve been playing in the West Indies where it’s been difficult, it’s been slow. Whereas the Indian team has been playing in New York where there’s been some seam movement, the batters haven’t been able to get their rhythm and also they’re coming from IPL where they were playing on a lot of flat wickets. So the adjustment is huge down there, that short turnaround, I think it’s going to be tough for India in the Super Eights."</p>

<p>However, the Aussie pointed out that if the two teams meet in the final, it will be an even battle as Men in Blue would be more familiar with the conditions by then.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Hogg added, "But it will be a different story when they get to the final, the contest will be a lot more even there because India would’ve been used to the conditions."</p>

<p>Notably, India and Australia have faced each other in the last two men's ICC finals, in WTC and ODI World Cup last year. On both the occasions, Australia got the better of Team India, hence, Rohit &amp; Co. will be desperate to settle scores this time around.</p>

T20 World Cup: Former Aussie spin wizard rooting for India vs Australia final

<p>On Friday (June 14), USA will take on Ireland in the Florida leg of Group A in the T20 World Cup 2024 edition. So far, Florida has hosted only one game in the ongoing 20-nation tournament, being held in West Indies and the USA. It was a washout encounter between Group D's Sri Lanka and Nepal, where not even the coin toss was possible. The weather forecast isn't encouraging for the remaining three games, however, if the USA-Ireland clash is washed out, it will confirm the team who will be enter&nbsp;the Super 8 along with India&nbsp;from&nbsp;Group&nbsp;A.</p>

<p>From Group A, India have secured a place in the next round&nbsp;with three successive wins whereas Canada are&nbsp;out (who may reach four points -- with a win over India -- but have a very poor Net Run-Rate). USA, with 3 points, are a strong contender to enter the next round. Even a washout against Ireland will secure them a spot in the Super 8.</p>

<p>If the match is abandoned due to rain, USA will end with 5 points from four games. Ireland will have 1&nbsp;point&nbsp;with a game to go, versus Pakistan (also in Florida on Sunday). The winner of the Ireland-Pakistan clash will end with 3 and 4 points, respectively. Hence, USA will step into the next round even with a washout against&nbsp;the Irish camp on Friday.</p>

<h2><strong>WILL IT BE USA ALONG WITH INDIA?</strong></h2>

<p>USA have stunned one and all with their performance in the ongoing showpiece event. While they opened their campaign with a good win over Canada, they pulled off a shocking victory over Babar Azam &amp; Co. Even against India, they had their moments before losing by seven wickets in New York. Hence, even a washout versus Ireland will help their cause.</p>

<p>Meanwhile, Ireland and Pakistan's campaigns will come to an end if rain plays spoilsport in Florida on Friday.</p>
