Defending champions England are on the brink of a catastrophic exit from the ongoing T20 World Cup as they sit third in the Group B standings with only two matches remaining. Jos Buttler’s side, who are one of the favourites to win the T20 World Cup, could face elimination if they fail to win their remaining matches. But what are the scenarios that could see them reach the Super Eight stage of the T20 World Cup?

England on the brink

Currently, the English side has one point from two matches after their defeat to Australia and points were shared with Scotland due to a washout. Buttler and Co can reach a maximum of five points in Group B while both Scotland (maximum seven) and Australia (maximum eight) sit in pole position.

For England to qualify, they should win both matches while Australia should lose both their remaining matches, or Scotland should lose their remaining match with them taking a hit on the net run rate (NRR).

The best possible scenario for England to qualify for the Super 8 will be – Australia beat Scotland by a big margin which results in them taking a hit on their NRR. This, coupled with England winning by a big margin against Oman and Namibia, will see Buttler and Co in the next round.

How could England get knocked out in the group stage?

In case Australia beat Namibia on Tuesday (June 11), then the Aussies will qualify for the Super 8 and could play a weakened side against Scotland in their final group match.

A defeat for Australia against Scotland will see the latter reach the next stage at England’s expense. In this scenario, Australia will end with six points while Scotland will finish top with seven points, meaning even if England win their remaining matches, they will face elimination.

Also if Australia win against Namibia and one of England’s matches against Oman or Namibia gets washed out due to rain, then Buttler and Co will have to pack their bags early as they won’t be able to finish in the top two.

'Please leave captaincy': Shoaib Malik urges Babar Azam to leave leadership role after India defeat in T20 WC

It will be a do-or-die contest for Pakistan in the T20 World Cup as they take guard against Canada on Tuesday (June 11) at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York. The contest will be key for the Men in Green who could face elimination from the tournament if results go against them. Even a washout could see their chances get affected, with both India and the USA benefiting from the same. Here are the details on why a washout favours India and the USA in the T20 World Cup.

India, USA in pole position

As things stand, before the Pakistan-Canada match, India and the USA occupy the top two spots with four points each and are in pole position to enter the Super Eight stage. Pakistan can only reach a maximum of four points in the group stage even if they win their remaining two matches. However, if rain plays spoilsport as it did during their match against India, then they will be on the brink of elimination.

Points will be shared in case the Pakistan-Canada match ends in a washout, meaning Pakistan will have one point after three matches and could reach a maximum of three points even if they beat Ireland in their final group match. With three points, Babar Azam’s men will be unable to catch both India and the USA in the points tally and thereby will face elimination.

A defeat for Pakistan against Canada will also see them getting knocked out of the group stage with one match to go. This result also means that Canada will give themselves a good chance of reaching the Super Eight. However, a washout will mean they could also reach only a maximum of five points and will need a helping hand to reach the Super Eight.

In case the India vs USA match on Wednesday ends in a washout, then also Pakistan face elimination. With the match assumed to be washed out, both India and the USA will attain five points each after three matches as points will be shared. This will mean that Pakistan and Ireland won’t be able to finish in the top two and get eliminated. In case, Pakistan beat Canada and the India-USA match ends in a washout, the trio of Pakistan, Canada and Ireland will get eliminated with one match still to be played.

India, USA in pole position As things stand, before the Pakistan-Canada match, India and the USA occupy the top two spots with four points each and are in pole position to enter the Super Eight stage.
India vs Pakistan affected by rain

At the time of writing the play had resumed at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium, however, rain was predicted to interrupt the game at any stage. In a scenario the match gets washed out, it will be the USA fans that will benefit the most. As a result, both India and Pakistan will get one point each leading to the latter’s case being vulnerable in Super Eight qualification.

This means Pakistan will reach only five points even if they win their remaining two matches against Ireland and Canada. For them to secure qualification, the trio of Canada, Ireland and the USA should secure four or fewer points. This means the USA should lose to Ireland and India while Ireland and Canada should also lose to India and Pakistan. The Men in Green should also hope that Ireland beat the USA as part of the equation mentioned above.

If the above scenarios are met, Pakistan will finish on five points in five matches and will be second in Group A. India will finish top while Canada, USA and Ireland will get eliminated with four or less points on the points tally.

How could Pakistan get eliminated?

In case India vs Pakistan match is washed out and the USA beat either India or Ireland, then Pakistan will face group stage elimination of the T20 World Cup. In this case, Pakistan will stay on five points while India (assuming will win its remaining matches against Canada and USA) and the USA will have six or more points. This will result in Pakistan finishing third or below in the group stage and will get eliminated.

Pakistan's hopes of qualifying for the Super Eight stage of the ongoing T20 World Cup were dealt a huge blow on Sunday (Jun 9) after an embarrassing defeat against India. The tame manner in which Pakistan went down against their arch-rivals came days after USA handed them a drubbing in the Super Over.

Having lost the two opening matches, Pakistan's fate in the tournament where they were the finalists two years ago, depends on a series of events that need to fall in their favour.

Here's how Pakistan can still qualify:

Pakistan have zero points after two matches and even if they win the remaining matches, their total points tally will only reach four. India and USA already have four points in their bag and thus Pakistan will be hoping that either of them lose their remaining matches.

India face USA in their next match on June 12 and the matchup will be crucial from Pakistan's point of view. A win for either of the two teams will secure a Super 8 berth. India are the heavy favourites but even if USA suffer a loss, they will still have the destiny in their own hands.

In case USA loses both matches and Pakistan wins out, it will all boil down to the Net Run Rate. Currently, Pakistan have a negative run-rate (-0.150) while India (+1.455) and USA (+0.626) boast of healthy scoring rate. Hence, Pakistan will not only have to win but win heavy in the remaining matches.

However, if any of USA's match is washed out, Pakistan will automatically exit the tournament.

T20 World Cup: How Pakistan can still qualify for Super 8 after loss against India

India emerged victorious by six runs in a rain-affected match against arch-rivals Pakistan after the bowlers produced a masterclass in defending a low target. Pakistan were in the driving seat for the major part of the game but lost their way in the last 45 minutes as Jasprit Bumrah produced a spell for the ages to bring India right back into the contest.

"It feels really good. We felt we were a little under and the wicket got a little better after the sun came out. We were really disciplined so it feels good. Tried to hit the seam as much as I could, tried to be as clear as I could with my execution and it all came out well so I felt happy," said Bumrah after the match.

At the halfway stage, India were down and out of the contest after the middle order produced a sorry performance. Put into bat first, India were going at decent clip with the scoreboard reading 89/3 in the 12th over.

However, India lost the remaining seven wickets whilst adding only 30 runs. Some poor shots and the inability to adjust to the tackiness of the wicket meant that Pakistan bowlers reaped the rewards as India stared at a second loss to Pakistan in their entire World Cup history.

Pakistan crumble when lights were bright

Chasing the target, Pakistan were off to a solid start with Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan putting a 26-run partnership. Bumrah was the first to strike after he bowled a beautiful outswinger that kissed Babar's outside edge and landed in Suryakumar Yadav's big mittens at first slip.

With the captain gone, Rizwan joined forces with Usman Khan and kept Pakistan in the contest. Axar Patel, introduced into the attack in the 11th over, struck on the first ball and sent Khan packing.

The biggest turning point in the match came in the 15th over when Bumrah came in for his second spell and castled Rizwan on the first ball. Eventually, the speedster finished with astonishing figures, reading 4-0-14-3.

With 18 runs required in the final over, Arshdeep Singh held his nerves and kept the Pakistani batters quiet. The win means that India have all but ensured a place in the Super 8.

Legendary pacer Wasim Akram goes on explosive rant against Pakistan players after capitulation vs India

South Africa overcame a stunning early batting collapse before sealing a four-wicket victory over bogey team the Netherlands in their T20 World Cup Group D clash in New York on Saturday.

David Miller's unbeaten 59 off 51 balls saw the Proteas safely home at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium, the South Africans finishing on 106-6 after restricting the Dutch to 103-9 from their 20 overs.

For a moment however it looked as if the Dutch were poised to inflict another famous upset on the South Africans following wins at the 2022 T20 World Cup and 2023 ODI World Cup.

The Proteas were left reeling at 12-4 after 4.3 overs and had even been 3-3 at one stage as the Dutch bowling attack broke through early.

But Tristan Stubbs and Miller hauled South Africa off the ropes with a fifth wicket partnership of 65 to leave the Proteas in a winning position.

While Stubbs eventually fell for 33, Miller saw South Africa home with a half century that included three fours and four sixes -- including a six off Bas de Leede in the 19th over to seal victory.

"It was just a good finish in the end," a relieved Miller said afterwards. "Credit to the Netherlands bowlers - they bowled really well.

"They made it difficult for us to score. But we have got over the line with our tailenders, so I have faith."

- 'Mental blockade' -

Proteas captain Aiden Markram said his team had overcome a psychological hurdle with the victory over the Dutch after their previous high-profile losses.

"We knew they were always going to up for a scrap," Markram said. "It's a game of cricket ultimately. The history before this game was obviously they beat us. It's a mental blockade -- and we were under pressure again today."

Earlier, Ottniel Baartman's dazzling four-wicket haul helped South Africa hold the Netherlands to a modest 103-9.

Baartman finished with figures of 4-11 off four overs, with Marco Jansen and Anrich Nortje both grabbing two wickets to keep the Dutch batsmen on the back foot.

Jansen had the Netherlands rocking in the opening over, getting rid of Michael Levitt caught behind for a duck after a review.

Jansen was involved again for South Africa's second dismissal, taking a superb one-handed diving catch at first slip after Max O'Dowd edged behind off Baartman.

That left the Netherlands reeling on 15-2 after four overs. They were three down in the following over as Jansen bagged his second wicket, obliterating Vikramjist Singh's stumps to make it 17-3.

De Leede was the next to fall, caught off Nortje for six runs from a delivery which rocketed up off the wicket.

It got worse for the Netherlands in the 12th over.

First Edwards was run out for 10 after a superb piece of fielding by South Africa skipper Aiden Markram.

Then Nortje bagged another wicket three balls later after Teja Nidamanuru's leading edge flew all the way to deep third man into the hands of Heinrich Klaasen to make it 48-6.

Sybrand Engelbrecht and Logan van Beek staged a fleeting fightback before falling to Baartman for 40 and 23 respectively as South Africa's bowlers reasserted themselves in the final overs.

But we have got over the line with our tailenders, so I have faith." - 'Mental blockade' - Proteas captain Aiden Markram said his team had overcome a psychological hurdle with the victory over the Dutch after their previous high-profile losses. "We knew they were always going to up for a scrap," Markram said. "It's a game of cricket ultimately. The history before this game was obviously they beat us. It's a mental blockade -- and we were under pressure again today." Earlier, Ottniel Baartman's dazzling four-wicket haul helped South Africa hold the Netherlands to a modest 103-9.

The countdown for the Champions Trophy has already begun with eight teams set to compete for the second-most important ODI tournament in cricket. According to the latest reports, the Champions Trophy will take place from 19 February 2025 to March 9 in Pakistan. The prestigious competition will take place for the first time in eight years with the last edition being held in 2017 when Pakistan beat India in the final. With several franchise leagues also taking place during the same period it will be interesting to see how players will co-ordinate.

Champions Trophy 2025 in February

Considered the next big thing to the World Cup in ODI format, the Champions Trophy will see eight teams compete for the prestigious honour. If the reported dates of Feb 19 to March 9 are confirmed, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) will have a huge headache in adjusting the Pakistan Super League (PSL) dates. On the other side, the PCB has been in conversation with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to help organise the entire tournament in Pakistan.

As things stand, India has resisted traveling to Pakistan for the Champions Trophy and wants to play in a hybrid model. The hybrid model will allow India to play its matches outside of Pakistan as it did during the Asia Cup 2023. However, the PCB has insisted that it will provide full security to the Indian team and wants the entire tournament to be played in the nation.

Rishabh Pant is all set to make his mark for Team India in the T20 World Cup as he takes guard against Pakistan on Sunday (June 9). Playing in his first international tournament after a near-fatal car accident in December 2022, Pant will be eager to make his presence felt. However, the Indian batter opened up on how badly he missed the ODI World Cup final having been injured. He also suggested that the match result would have been different had he been on the field during the World Cup which India lost to Australia in November in Ahmedabad.

Since his accident in December 2022, Pant only returned to action during the Indian Premier League (IPL 2024) season. Asked to bat first, the pair of David Warner (39) and Travis Head (34) stitched a partnership of 70 runs for the opening wicket. However, both the batters departed in quick succession, leaving Glenn Maxwell (28) and Marsh in the middle. Both the batters got starts and steered the Aussies towards a big total, but both were scalped in no time. Marcus Stoinis (30), Tim David (11) and Matthew Wade (17) would then help Australia get to 201/7 in the 20 overs. Chris Jordan was the pick of the bowlers for England as he ended figures of 44/2 in his four overs. There were wickets for Mooen Ali, Jofra Archer, Adil Rashid and Livingstone as England could not stop the Aussies from reaching 200. At the time of writing, England were 40/0 in four overs and needed 162 runs more to win from 16 overs. Philip Salt (20) and Jos Buttler (16) were in the middle for the defending champions as they look to lay the foundation for their first win of the T20 World Cup.

The stage is set for India and Pakistan as the two giants of the world cricket lock horns in the T20 World Cup on Sunday (June 9). The contest which could decide the fate of Pakistan in the T20 World Cup will see the Men in Green enter Sunday's match knowing a defeat could see them face elimination from the tournament, having earlier lost to co-hosts USA on Thursday. So here are the permutations for Pakistan to reach the Super Eighth stage if they lose to India in New York on Sunday.

What is the current scenario?

As things stand, Pakistan’s defeat to USA has seen them lose out on valuable two points while India kick started the tournament with a win against Ireland. Babar Azam’s side can currently reach a maximum of six points but a defeat to India will see them reach only four points provided they beat both Canada and Ireland in their remaining two matches.

If Pakistan lose to India, they will need USA to lose to Ireland and India in their remaining two matches which restricts them to just four points. On the flip side, assuming Pakistan win their remaining two matches against Ireland and Canada by a significant margin it will come down to net run rate (NRR) where the 2009 champions will need to have better margin than the USA.

Also if India lose their remaining two matches to Canada and USA, they could also end with four points and will have to depend on the NRR to reach the next stage. However, considering their level of experience in world cricket losing to USA and Canada is almost unlikely.

In the Super Over, it was Netravalkar who held his nerves to restrict Pakistan to 13 for 1 after they were asked to chase 19 in the final six balls. Thus, Oracle left a heartfelt message for their employee.

"Congrats @USACricket on a historic result! Proud of the team and our very own engineering and cricket star @Saurabh_Netra," said Oracle.

Netravalkar made headlines before the mega event when his LinkedIn profile went viral and a colleague of his revealed that he was working with him at Oracle. Notably, Netravalkar represented India in the 2010 U-19 World Cup before moving to the States to study and found a job in Oracle. T20 World Cup: Oracle congratulates 'engineering, cricket star' Saurabh Netravalkar after USA stun Pakistan

USA defeated Pakistan in a thrilling Super Over clash in match 11 of the T20 World Cup, being held in USA and West Indies. India-born Saurabh Netravalkar was the star of the show, as he halted Pakistan's run chase in the Super Over to hand his team a memorable win. As soon as the last ball was bowled, his teammates rejoiced and hugged Saurabh. However, Saurabh didn't break into any wild celebratory gestures and maintained a calm grin.

At the Grand Prairie Stadium, Dallas, Babar Azam & Co. were asked to bat first and the Men in Green posted 159 for 7, after struggling in the first ten overs. In reply, USA tied the game, managing 159/3. In the Super Over, pacer Netravalkar held his nerves to defend USA's score of 18/1 as Pakistan only managed 13, with the loss of a wicket, to lose by five runs.

Talking about the Super Over, USA piled up 18 in six balls, bowled by an erratic Mohammad Amir (who had a good outing during the run-chase, with 1 for 25). In reply, Pakistan gave themselves a chance with Fakhar Zaman and Iftikhar Ahmed coming out to bat but Netravalkar -- with match figures of 2 for 18 -- took USA to a historic win. Here is the clip of USA's winning moment (shared by a fan on X):

Asked to bat first, Pakistan lost Mohammad Rizwan, Usman Khan and Zaman early as Netravalkar and left-arm spinner Nosthush Kenjige made a fine start with the ball. Skipper Babar (43-ball 44) and Shadab Khan (40) added 72 for the fourth-wicket to revive their innings. In the end, Iftikhar and Shaheen Afridi's finishing acts propelled the 2009 winners to a competitive 159 for 7.

However, USA batters looked determined to chase down the score. Skipper Monank Patel held one end and added 36 runs with his opening partner Steven Taylor before putting on another 68 with Andries Gous (35). While the two were back in the hut before the death overs, vice-captain Aaron Jones' 36 not out ensured the game went into the Super Over. Amir and Naseem Shah were economical and chipped in with a wicket each, however, Pakistan's sloppy fielding and erratic bowling -- especially in the Super Over -- led to their shocking loss.
