The ongoing T20 World Cup 2024 edition, being held in West Indies and the USA, has produced many shocking results and close affairs. Co-hosts USA stunned Babar Azam-led Pakistan in a thrilling Super Over contest, held last week in Dallas, creating a lot of buzz. Recently, US State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller indulged in fun banter with a reporter when asked about the Monank Patel-led USA's win over Pakistan in the mega event.

During a press briefing, Miller was asked to comment on the USA, which is an associate team, pulling off a heist against Pakistan, a full-member side. In a cheeky response, the official said, "I often get in trouble when I try to comment on things beyond my area of expertise, and I would say Pakistan's cricket team is certainly in that category."

T20 WC - 'I get in trouble...': White House official shares cheeky remark on USA's win vs Pakistan

USA have been making headlines in the T20 World Cup being played in the West Indies and the US. Their India-born pacer Saurabh Netravalkar, who even represented India in the 2010 U-19 World Cup before moving to the States, has been one of the heroes of their campaign so far, claiming four wickets in three games. Recently, he recalled dismissing Virat Kohli during his side's seven-wicket loss to Team India.

Talking to The Times of India, Netravalkar, who led USA to a thrilling Super Over win against Pakistan in the ongoing tournament, said, "I am just happy that I can pursue both my passions. It is all happening very fast and I am in the process of digesting it. These last two games were really high-profile. It was an emotional moment to get Virat's wicket. I was looking to hit off-stump and it worked out well."

Netravalkar, a left-arm pacer, exposed Kohli's weakness outside the off-stump as he found the edge of the star batter's blade. Kohli was, thus, dismissed for a golden duck in India's 111-run chase, which they eventually completed in 18.2 overs with seven wickets in hand courtesy of Suryakumar Yadav's 50 not out. In addition, the 32-year-old, who works as a software engineer for Oracle in the States, also dismissed Indian captain Rohit Sharma for 3 (6).

The Mumbai-born cricketer is good friends with Surya and even spoke on his relationship with him. In this regard, he opined, "I know Surya from my U-15, U-17 days, we were talking about our dressing-room banter. I didn't know Virat personally but he did congratulate me."

The US speedster has four wickets from three outings at an average of 13 and an impressive economy of 5.20.

Netravalkar-starrer USA are very much in contention to reach the Super 8s. They will lock horns with Ireland, in Florida on Friday (June 14) and even a washout will assure them a spot in the next round.

T20 WC: 'It was an emotional moment' - USA pacer Saurabh Netravalkar recalls dismissing Virat Kohli

Bangladesh beat Netherlands by 25 runs in match 27 of the ongoing T20 World Cup, being held in the West Indies and USA, on Thursday (June 13). Locking horns at the Arnos Vale Ground, Kingstown, St Vincent, the Bangla Tigers posted 159 for 5 courtesy of Shakib Al Hasan's 64 not out and later rode on Rishad Hossain's three-fer and Taskin Ahmed's 2 for 30 to restrict the Dutch for 134 for 8 to boost their Super 8 chances. Following the win, veteran all-rounder Shakib opened up on former Indian opener Virender Sehwag's criticism, who questioned his place in the T20I side, and gave a befitting reply.

Sehwag questioned Shakib’s place in Bangladesh's T20I side owing to his poor run of form with both bat and ball before his match-winning half-century versus the Dutch. In 2024, the 37-year-old had just scored 69 runs in six T20I innings -- before the Netherlands clash -- at an average of 11.50. Even with the ball, he scalped just six wickets from eight innings at 30.50. However, Shakib contributed in both the departments during the Netherlands clash. Hence, he reacted to Sehwag's comments and said his job was not to answer questions but to perform for the team.

In the post-match presser, Shakib said, "A player never comes to answer any questions. A player's job is to bat for the team if he's a batsman and contributes to the team. If he is a bowler, his job is to bowl well. The wicket is about luck. If he is a fielder, he should save each run and take as many catches as he can. Here, actually, there's nothing to answer for anyone. I think it is important for a current player how much he can contribute to his team. When he can't contribute, then naturally there would be discussions and I don't think it is a bad thing."

Shakib added, "I have never been worried about my performance. I don't think that I ever had that thought in my career. I feel good If I can contribute to the team. As I said, maybe today is my day, but maybe someone else's day will come in the next match."

Following a win over the Dutch, Bangladesh have kept their hopes alive of entering the Super 8s from Group D, along with South Africa (who have already qualified). The Asian side has 4 points from three games with a net run rate of +0.478.

Indian captain Rohit Sharma admitted that it is a 'big relief' for India to have qualified for the Super 8 round in the T20 World Cup, following their hard-fought seven-wicket win over USA in New York on Wednesday (June 12). Playing at the tough Nassau County Cricket Stadium in New York, India were reeling at 10-2 in chase of 111 before Suryakumar Yadav's 50* guided India home. Arshdeep Singh won the Player-of-the-Match award for his 4 for 9. With this, India ended their New York leg, which has been a tough surface for batting and, hence, Rohit was quick to point out that it is a big relief to have qualified ahead.

After the match, Rohit said, "It is a big relief, playing cricket here wasn't easy. We had to stick through till the end in all 3 games. Will take a lot of confidence from these wins."

T20 WC: Qualifying for Super 8s 'big relief', playing in New York wasn't easy - Rohit after India beat USA

New Zealand’s chances of playing in the T20 World Cup 2024 Super 8 stage took heavy dent on Wednesday (June 12) after their defeat to co-hosts West Indies. The 13-run defeat for the BlackCaps sees them pointless after two matches. This also leaves them at the mercy of other teams losing and dropping points to reach the Super 8 stage. So here are the equations by which New Zealand can still reach the Super 8 stage with Afghanistan still in danger of missing out.

New Zealand on the brink

Currently pointless after two matches, New Zealand will have to win both their matches to stand any chance of Super 8 qualification. Those wins have to be coupled with defeats for Afghanistan in their remaining two matches by a big margin. In this case, the second spot will be decided on net run rate (NRR) where the BlackCaps should have a better return.

For this to happen, New Zealand must beat Uganda and Papua New Guinea with a significant margin. However, if Afghanistan win either of their remaining two matches which are against Papua New Guinea and the West Indies, Kane Williamson’s side will face elimination. Chances of Afghanistan winning against Papua New Guinea are high considering the experience of the side. If the result does take place on Thursday (June 13), then New Zealand will pack their bags early.

What role will weather play?

In case rain plays a big role it will favour Afghanistan as they need only one point to seal qualification to the Super 8 of the T20 World Cup. In a scenario where rain interrupts play in New Zealand’s matches, Williamson's team would still face elimination as they won’t finish in the top two. In case matches are washed out due to rain in the T20 World Cup, points are shared with both teams getting one point each.

Remaining matches in Group C

Afghanistan vs Papua New Guinea, June 13

New Zealand vs Uganda, June 14

West Indies vs Afghanistan, June 17

New Zealand vs Papua New Guinea, June 17

The 13-run defeat for the BlackCaps sees them pointless after two matches. This also leaves them at the mercy of other teams losing and dropping points to reach the Super 8 stage. So here are the equations by which New Zealand can still reach the Super 8 stage with Afghanistan still in danger of missing out. New Zealand on the brink Currently pointless after two matches, New Zealand will have to win both their matches to stand any chance of Super 8 qualification. Explained: How New Zealand can qualify for the Super 8 stage of T20 World Cup 2024

India crawled to a seven-wicket win against USA to secure their second win of ICC T20 World Cup and a place in the Super 8 stage of the tournament. The win also provides breathing space to Pakistan who would have exited the tournament had India lost the match. Surkyakumar Yadav (50*) and Shivam Dube (31*) forged a 72-run partnership to ensure India got over the winning line after USA pegged them back in the first half of the chase. Batting on a sticky pitch at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium, in front of a divided house, SKY and Dube had to bide their time in the middle. SKY, whose form in the ICC tournaments has been shaky at best, was given a reprieve during the innings but utilised it to full effect to see the chase through. Meanwhile, Dube, who had a forgettable passage in the IPL and in the first match against Pakistan, got some adequate batting time under his belt. Chasing a tricky target of 111, India lost Virat Kohli in the first over on a golden duck, courtesy of Saurabh Netravalkar. The left-arm seamer, who works for Oracle forced Kohli, the highest run-scorer in T20 World Cups to edge one straight back to the keeper. Skipper Rohit Sharma did not last long either and perished against Netravalkar again by chipping a straight delivery down to mid off. However, the middle order managed to hold its own with Rishabh Pant (18) also absorbing some of the US pressure efficiently. Wicketkeeper Andries Gous departed in the same over after being rushed into a shot, with the ball ballooning straight up in air to Hardik Pandya who zipped across at mid off to take a good catch. Hero of the previous two matches, Aaron Jones did put up a brief fight but could not over deal with the short-pitch bowling of Pandya. Lower down the order, Nitish Kumar, Corey Anderson and Harmeet Singh played little cameos but never really threatened to disturb the Indian bowling attack. Singh was at his pristine best as he finished with the best figures for an Indian bowler in the T20 World Cups (2-0-9-4). "The team always shows belief in me and keeps backing me, I had to deliver for them. The wicket is very conducive to fast bowlers and it's helping us get some seam movement. The plan was simple, pitch it in the wicket and let the ball do the talking," said Singh who won the Player of the Match award. The win concludes India's campaign in the US as the team flies to Miami later tonight and from there to the Caribbean where sterner challenges await the Men-in-Blue.

T20 World Cup: India crawl to win against USA to give Pakistan a chance at survival

England men's cricket team head coach, Matthew Mott, is hoping that Josh Hazlewood was joking when he made the statement about Australia manipulating an early exit for the defending champions.

England's destiny in the ongoing T20 world Cup does not lie in their own hands. After a washout in the opening match, England were soundly defeated by Australia, leaving them at the mercy of other results.

"I think I know Josh pretty well and I know his integrity. He has got a very good sense of humour and I am hoping it was very much tongue-in-cheek," Mott said.

"I actually don't think it is ever going to play out. Having grown up in Australia, and the will to win every game, I am sure they will come to the fore. I am very much hoping it was an offhand remark by a really good bloke who is having fun," he added.

After the match against Namibia, the Australian pacer suggested that Australia could be tempted to "knock it around and drag it out".

"They're probably one of the top few teams on their day, and we've had some real struggles against them in T20 cricket, so if we can get them out of the tournament, that's in our best interest as well as probably everyone else.

"It'll be interesting to see. We've never really been in this position before as a team, I don't think, so whether we have discussions or not, we'll just try and play it again the way we did tonight. That'll be up to [other] people, not me,” he continued.

T20 World Cup: 'I am hoping...': England coach Matthew Mott on Australia deliberately playing slow

India beat USA by seven wickets in what was a hard-fought low-scoring affair in the ongoing T20 World Cup on Wednesday (June 12). Playing at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium, New York, India kept their winning run intact in the 20-nation tournament, being held in West Indies and the USA, to become the third team to proceed to the Super 8 stage. Chasing 111, India were made to work hard for every run but were awarded 5 penalty runs during the end overs. This eased their run-chase as they eventually won by seven wickets in 18.2 overs.

WHY WERE INDIA AWARDED 5 PENALTY RUNS VS USA?

It is to be noted that just before the start of the 16th over, stand-in captain Aaron Jones had a word with the umpires before USA were docked five penalty runs. Notably, the co-hosts went past 60 seconds to start a new over three times during the Indian innings. As per the new rules, it is considered a penalty. Hence, this changed the momentum of the game completely in India's favour. Before the penalty runs were awarded, India needed 35 off 30 balls but the equation changed to 30 off 30 deliveries, thanks to the new rule.

From 10/2, the Men in Blue were further reduced to 39 for 3 before an unbeaten 72-run fourth-wicket stand between Suryakumar Yadav (50 not out) and Shivam Dube (31 not out) took them home in 18.2 overs.

T20 World Cup: India set to face Australia on June 24 in Super 8 stage! Here's how

Australia have booked their place in the T20 World Cup Super 8 stage after their latest win against Namibia on Tuesday (June 11). Having rested Mitchell Starc for the clash in Antigua, the Aussies made light work of the African side to secure a nine-wicket win which now sees them into the next round. On the other hand, Sri Lanka are on the brink of elimination after their match against Nepal was washed out due to rain, leaving them winless after three matches.

Australia in Super 8

Needing only a win to secure a Super 8 berth, Australia crushed Namibia in Antigua in a contest that lasted a little over two hours on the pitch. Bowling first, all of Australia’s frontline bowlers were on the wicket-takers list as they bowled out the minnows for 72 in 17 overs. Adam Zampa was the pick of the bowlers with figures of 12/4 in his four overs while Marcus Stoinis (9/2) and Josh Hazlewood (18/2) were also in great form with the ball.

Interestingly, only two Namibia batters got into double figures with Michael van Lingen scoring 10 and skipper Gerhard Erasmus amassing half of the team’s total with 36 runs.

Needing just 73 runs to win, the Aussies chased down the total in just 5.4 overs with Travis Head top-scoring with 34 runs while David Warner got out for 20. Mitchell Marsh remained unbeaten on 18 off 9 propelling Australia to their third win of the T20 World Cup.

Australia’s final contest against Scotland will be an interesting scenario. If Mitchell Marsh’s side loses that match they will finish second in Group B and eliminate England with Scotland finishing as group winners with seven points. However, an Australia win will see England retain their chances of Super 8 qualification provided they win their remaining two matches.

Sri Lanka stare at elimination

Needing to win to retain their Super 8 qualification aspirations, Sri Lanka’s hopes were damaged by the washout against Nepal. With the points shared, both teams got off the mark on the points table but with only one game in hand, Sri Lanka can reach a maximum of three points even if they win against the Netherlands on Sunday.

Sri Lanka’s Super 8 qualification scenario as follows after today’s draw due to rain

Netherlands vs Bangladesh match should get washed out due to rain, if either team wins then Sri Lanka are eliminated

Nepal should beat Bangladesh by a big margin which see the latter take a hit on Net Run Rate (NRR)

Sri Lanka should beat the Netherlands by a big margin, ensuring they end with better NRR than Bangladesh

T20 World Cup: Aussies secure Super 8 berth despite resting star names vs Namibia; SL on brink of elimination

Former Pakistan captain Salman Butt ripped apart Babar Azam-led Men in Green following their poor performances in the ongoing T20 World Cup 2024, being held in West Indies and the USA. Butt came down heavily on Babar for his lack of match-winning performances and blasted the entire side for portraying themselves as giants despite falling flat against big teams. He even laughed off comparisons of Babar and Virat Kohli, stating that 'there is self-proclamation that our captain is the king'.

In a social media video, Butt said, "There is self-proclamation that our captain is the king and the other is the world's best fast bowler. Sometimes we compare this guy with (Jasprit) Bumrah and him (Babar) with (Virat) Kohli...Okay, you touched ICC (top) ranking at one point, but also touched reality sometime. Are you able to win a match on your own? Is there a standing of our team? It's similar to those YouTube thumbnails that you are enticed to click and open once."

Babar has only 90 runs in three games in the T20 WC, at an average of 30 and a strike-rate of 105. Against India, he only managed a 10-ball 13.

Butt further mentioned, "Besides its good things, one bad thing about social media is that you can get anything done by paid campaigns...your decisions are based on paid campaigns. We should bring these self-proclaimed greats back on earth and (tell them to) stay who they are. First win a match, a big tournament, fight it out to win against a big team, finish a match single-handedly, then think what you want to proclaim."

"This is an utterly absurd statement and an incredibly childish act that only a 'Nalaayak' (worthless) individual can perpetrate. Kamran Akmal must comprehend that there is no necessity to comment on or mock anyone's religion," Harbhajan was quoted as saying by news agency ANI.

"It is commendable that he swiftly realised his error and apologised, but he should never again attempt to offend any Sikh or any religion. We hold all religions in high regard, be it Hinduism, Islam, Sikhism, or Christianity...," Harbhajan added.

What did Kamran do?

Akmal, who is currently part of a Pakistani channel's cricket panel for the ICC T20 World Cup, made fun of Arshdeep as the Indian pacer prepared to bowl the final over of the India vs Pakistan match.

"Kuch bhi ho sakta hai...12 baj gaye hai (Anything can happen, it's 12 already),” Akmal said laughing.

“Kisi Sikh ko nahi dena chaiye 12 baje over (No Sikh should be given the over when it is 12)," another guest on the show could be heard adding to Akmal's joke.

While Akmal made racial jokes about Arshdeep, the left-arm seamer went on to bowl an excellent last over that helped India win the match, despite posting a modest target of 120.

As the video clip of Akmal's inappropriate joke went viral, Harbhajan posted a message on his X account and slammed the Pakistani ex-cricketer.

"Lakh di laanat tere Kamraan Akhmal (Shame on you Kamran Akmal). You should know the history of Sikhs before u open ur filthy mouth," wrote Harbhajan.

Harbhajan Singh calls Kamran Akmal 'worthless' despite apology from ex-Pakistan cricketer for racist joke

West Indies captain Rovman Powell feels this is the best time for the two-time winners to play 'undercooked' New Zealand in the T20 World Cup. On Wednesday (Jun 12), local time, West Indies will host Kane Williamson-led Black Caps at the Brian Lara Stadium Tarouba, Trinidad and hope to make it three wins in a row to cement their place in Super 8. The Kiwis are currently languishing at the bottom of Group D with a Net Run Rate of -4.200 after an 84-run loss to Afghanistan.

Ahead of the crucial clash versus the Black Caps, Powell said in the pre-match press conference, "Definitely, if there's a good time to play New Zealand, I think it's now. As you said, they're a little bit undercooked. The pressure is really on them, because this game decides whether they go on: yes or no. Having said that, we're not focusing on New Zealand: we're focusing on what we have to do."

The 30-year-old Powell further indicated that a high-scoring match may not be on the cards due to the weather. In this regard, Powell added, "With the rain around, that can play a part in the scores. If the groundsmen don't have sufficient time to produce good wickets, that's also a problem with the rain around. You don't get enough time to sun. Hopefully tomorrow is a very good day in terms of the weather."

Talking about NZ's T20 WC opener, they faced Rashid Khan-led Afghanistan at the Providence Stadium, Guyana on Jun 7 (local time) and fell flat. Opting to bowl first, NZ were off to a poor start. Afghanistan rode on opener Rahmanullah Gurbaz's 80 to post 159 for 6. In reply, the Kiwis fell for a paltry 75 in 15.2 overs courtesy of Fazalhaq Farooqi and captain Rashid's four wickets apiece.

The India vs Pakistan T20 World Cup match was yet another occasion where the Men in Green suffered their latest setback which could now see them on the brink of elimination. While the contest was taking place in the United States, far from the original geographical rise of the rivalry, an unfortunate incident took place in Pakistan’s Karachi. A YouTuber lost his life after he was shot while filming a preview for the India-Pakistan T20 World Cup match.

What was the incident?

Saad Ahmed, a 24-year-old YouTuber, was shot dead by a security guard in the Serena mobile market in Karachi on June 4. According to eyewitnesses, the YouTuber was in conversation with the shopkeepers and the local public when the incident took place. During this conversation, Ahmed approached Gul Hassan, a security person in the famous Karachi market. During their chat, the flow of the conversation escalated to such an extent that Gul shot Ahmed with his service pistol.

He was quickly rushed to a hospital by the people around him but he succumbed to his injuries. CCTV footage indicated that Ahmed was shot in the shoulder and was bleeding profusely.

Police officers quickly arrived at the scene and, with the assistance of rescue teams, took Ahmed to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital where he was pronounced ‘dead on arrival’.

A First Information Report (FIR) has been lodged at the Taimuria Police Station after a complaint was filed by the victim’s father, Mukhtiar Ahmed. The FIR names the security guard, the security agency and the mobile market authority that have been accused of negligence despite prior permission for the video shoot.

The local police are understood to have taken appropriate action once the complaint was filed. The security person was detained and his weapon was confiscated with an inquiry underway. It is being reported that certain gestures by Ahmed provoked Gul who then shot the YouTuber.

After Australia thrashed Namibia in the T20 World Cup to confirm their Super 8 spot, pacer Josh Hazlewood admitted that the one-time winners could try and manipulate any margin of victory against Scotland -- i.e. if they are in a position to do so -- to knockout defending champions England. Jos Buttler & Co. are in a precarious position to stay alive in the competition after being winless post their first two games. The 2022 champions will next face Oman in Antigua.

England's tournament opener saw the clash being abandoned due to rain, after Scotland's innings. In their following tie, England lost to Australia by 36 runs and need full points from their remaining two games to proceed ahead. Australia, with three wins in a row, may look to rest some big players -- as they did versus Namibia on Tuesday (June 11) in Antigua (local time) -- versus Scotland and might be tempted to work around any margin of victory -- if in such a position -- to eliminate England.

Hazlewood told reporters after his side's big win against Namibia, "In this tournament you potentially come up against England at some stage again and…they're probably one of the top few teams on their day and we've had some real struggles against them in T20 cricket, so if we can get them out of the tournament that's in our best interest as well as probably everyone else,"

"It'll be interesting to see. We've never really been in this position before as a team, I don't think, so whether we have discussions or not, we'll just try and play it again the way we did tonight. That'll be up to people, not me," Hazlewood further said.

He, however, added, "Whether you get close and you just knock it around and drag it out. There's a few options there but...to take confidence from winning and winning well, I think that's almost more important than potentially trying to knock someone else out. They've still got a lot to do on their behalf as well, so I think it'll become clearer the closer we get to that sort of stuff."

Regarding the Net Run Rate (NRR) scenario, the exact sums won't be known until England play Oman as well as Namibia. However, there is a high probability of Scotland making it to the next round even with a narrow loss against Australia. This would eventfully eliminate England even if Buttler & Co. win their remaining fixtures.

Given the NRR won't be carried forward in the next round, Australia won't mind manipulating any margin of victory over the Scotts. However, one can't take Scotland lightly as well. They have it in them to spring in a surprise versus the Aussies (especially if they are considering to rest some of their key players). At present, Scotland are placed second in Group B with 5 points, with a NRR of +2.164. England have 1 point and a NRR of -1.800. Meanwhile, Australia top this group with 6 points and a healthy NRR of +3.580.

The Australia-Scotland clash will be held at the Daren Sammy National Cricket Stadium, Gros Islet, St Lucia on Saturday (June 15).

T20 WC: Knocking England out early is 'in our best interests' - Hazlewood after Australia confirm Super 8 spot

Babar Azam-led Pakistan finally got off the mark in the T20 World Cup with a seven-wicket win over Canada, in New York, on Tuesday (June 11). In a 107-run chase, Pakistan rode on Mohammad Rizwan's 53* after Mohammad Amir's 2 for 13 restricted Canada for 106/7. With this, Pakistan keep their T20 WC hopes alive and have a bleak chance of reaching the Super 8. However, they are at the mercy of Florida's not-so-promising weather ahead of their final game versus Ireland, on Sunday (June 16).

It is to be noted that Florida will host three matches in Group A comprising Pakistan. Pakistan will, thus, face Ireland at the Central Broward Regional Park Stadium Turf Ground in Lauderhill, Florida on Sunday and need full points to proceed ahead, along with some other favourable results. However, the weather forecast isn't ideal in Florida for the upcoming games.

If rain plays spoilsport for Pakistan, Babar & Co. will be knocked out of the 20-nation tournament. At present, they only have two points with a Net Run-Rate of +0.191 following defeats versus USA and India along with a win versus Canada.

So far, Florida has hosted only one game in the tournament. On Tuesday, Nepal and Sri Lanka's face-off got washed out at the Central Broward Regional Park Stadium Turf Ground in Lauderhill, Florida where not even a single ball was bowled (without a toss). In fact, the officials called off the match more than two hours before the cut off time for a 5-over contest. Thus, Pakistani fans will hope for a major turnaround in Florida's weather for the upcoming days and pray for their side's win to enter the next round.

T20 World Cup: Pakistan’s Super 8 chances at the mercy of Florida weather! Here's why

Sri Lanka's hopes of winning their first T20 World Cup in a decade took massive dents on Tuesday (June 11) after their match against Nepal was washed out due to rain. The contest supposed to take place in Florida was called off without a ball being bowled, resulting in points being shared. This leaves Sri Lanka with a hilarious set of equations to qualify for the T20 World Cup Super 8 stage with Bangladesh and South Africa now sitting in pole position.

What is the current scenario?

After defeats to South Africa and Bangladesh in their opening two matches of the T20 World Cup, Sri Lanka needed to win the Tuesday contest against Nepal to keep their fate in their own hands. While the point against Nepal got them off the mark on the standings, it leaves them with a vulnerable set of results to be achieved to reach the Super 8.

Going into their final group game, even a win against the Netherlands on Sunday won’t see them qualify for the Super 8 as they will reach a maximum of three points and need all other teams to stay on three points or lower. The following are the only set of results that could see Sri Lanka finish second.

Netherlands vs Bangladesh match should get washed out due to rain, in case one of the two teams win then Sri Lanka are eliminated

Nepal should beat Bangladesh by a big margin which sees the latter take a hit on Net Run Rate (NRR)

Sri Lanka should beat the Netherlands by a big margin, ensuring they end with better NRR than Bangladesh

Explained: Sri Lanka's hilarious equations to qualify for T20 World Cup Super 8 stage

Former Pakistan captain Salim Malik has questioned all-rounder Imad Wasim's slow and ineffective knock versus India in the T20 World Cup match, held on Sunday (June 9) in New York. Playing at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium, New York, Babar Azam-led Pakistan opted to bowl first and did well to dismiss India for 119 in 19 overs, riding on Naseem Shah and Haris Rauf's three-fers along with Mohammad Amir's 2 for 23. In reply, the Men in Green fell apart -- despite needing 48 in the last eight overs -- to only manage 113/7. While questions have been raised on several Pakistani batters, Malik pointed fingers at Wasim for his 23-ball 15.

Malik said on 24 News channel, "You look at his (Wasim) innings, and it appears as if he was wasting balls not scoring runs and making things difficult in the run-chase."

Talking about Wasim's knock, he came out to bat at No. 5 and struggled throughout the innings on a tricky surface against a disciplined Indian bowling attack. He only managed a boundary and struck at a woeful 65.22 to further dent Pakistan's run-chase. The one-time winners were ahead in the run-chase for a majority part, despite India not letting them dictate terms, however, the middle and lower-order failed to close the chase. Wasim's knock has been severely criticised as the left-hander struggled to get his timing right.

T20 WC: 'It appears he was wasting balls' - Former Pak captain questions Imad Wasim's slow knock vs India

Mohammad Rizwan and captain Babar Azam starred as Pakistan stayed alive at the T20 World Cup with a seven-wicket win over Canada on Tuesday (Jun 11).

Knowing defeat would condemn them to a shock first-round exit, Rizwan and Babar put on a match-winning second-wicket partnership of 63 as Pakistan reached their target of 107 with 15 balls to spare.

Opener Rizwan finished undefeated on 53 off 53 balls with two fours and a six for his 29th T20 international half-century while Babar made 33 off as many balls with one four and a six.

The victory came after the 2009 champions and runners-up in 2022 had lost both their first two Group A fixtures.

A stunning super-over humiliation at the hands of the United States was followed by a six-run loss to bitter rivals India in a game where they failed to chase down a modest 120-run target.

However, Tuesday's win at the same Nassau County International Cricket Stadium where they came up short against India may still not be enough to secure a place in the second round Super Eights.

Pakistan have two points with one game left while India and the United States both have four points from two wins apiece and remain favourites to progress to the next stage.

Despite the loss, Canada, with two points from three games, are still in the hunt for a Super Eights spot.

Dilon Heyliger took two of the Pakistan wickets to fall, dismissing recalled opener Saim Ayub for six and claiming the prized wicket of Babar, both men caught behind.

Earlier, Pakistan restricted Canada to 106-7 despite opener Aaron Johnson hitting his sixth international fifty.

Johnson demonstrated his attacking intent from the start, cracking successive boundaries off the first two balls he faced from Shaheen Shah Afridi.

The Jamaica-born 33-year-old opener made 52 off 44 balls with four boundaries and four sixes before he was eventually out in the 14th over with the score on 73-6, clean-bowled by Naseem Shah.

Johnson was the only batsman in the top six to reach double figures as Pakistan's seamers took wickets on a regular basis.

Mohammad Amir clean-bowled Navneet Dhaliwal (four) with a 141 km/h delivery which sliced through the defences of the opener.

Shaheen recovered from conceding 10 runs off his first over to get rid of Pargat Singh (two) before Nicholas Kirton (one) was run out by a superb throw by Imad Wasim.

Haris Rauf sent back Shreyas Movva (2) -- for his 100th wicket in the format -- and Ravinderpal Singh (0) in the space of three balls as Canada reached 55-5 after 10 overs.

Once Johnson was out, Canada struggled to press the accelerator and had added just 14 more runs off 20 balls when skipper Saad Bin Zafar (10) top-edged Amir to Rizwan behind the stumps.

Amir finished with 2-13 while Rauf claimed 2-26.

Pakistan keep T20 World Cup hopes alive after convincing win against Canada

South Africa defeated Bangladesh by just four runs in another low-scoring game at the T20 World Cup on Monday, a result likely to spark fresh debate over the suitability of the pitch being used in New York.

South Africa were restricted to 113-6 in their 20 overs with Heinrich Klaasen top-scoring on 46 while fast bowler Tanzim Hasan Sakib returned a career-best 3-18.

However, Bangladesh could only manage 109-7 in reply as South Africa wrapped up a third win in three Group D games.

"It was not a nice one to watch, it was good that the boys got it over the line," said Klaasen.

"The wicket is not too great for strokeplay."

Chasing just 114 to win on the controversial drop-in strip at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium, Bangladesh initially struggled in the face of the Proteas' pace battery.

They were 50-4 at the 10-over mark having lost Tanzid Hasan (nine) to Kagiso Rabada while Anrich Nortje accounted for skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto (14) and Shakib Al Hasan (three).

Spinner Keshav Maharaj sent back Liton Das for just nine.

However, Towhid Hridoy, who top-scored with 40 when Bangladesh defeated Sri Lanka in their opener, and 38-year-old Mahmudullah steadied the ship for the Tigers.

The pair put on 44 for the fifth wicket before Hridoy was lbw to Rabada for 37, an innings which took up 34 balls and featured two fours and two sixes.

Bangladesh took seven off the penultimate over but still needed 11 off the last to be bowled by Maharaj.

That became seven off four balls. With the pressure building both Jaker Ali and Mahmudullah were caught by Aiden Markram going for big heaves over long on.

Needing six off the final ball, Taskin Ahmed could only produce a scrambled single.

Should have won

"I think this is a match we should have won. In the last couple of overs they bowled well, but this can happen in cricket," said Shanto.

Earlier, Bangladesh restricted South Africa to 113-6 with Tanzim backed up by Taskin's 2-19 after Proteas skipper Markram won the toss and opted to bat.

South Africa were struggling at 23-4 at one stage before Klaasen and David Miller, celebrating his 35th birthday, came to their team's rescue with a partnership of 79 for the fifth wicket.

Klaasen's 46 came off 44 balls with two fours and three sixes before he was clean-bowled by Taskin, slogging across the line in the 18th over with the score on 102.

Miller, who made a match-winning undefeated 59 in the nervy win over the Netherlands, went four runs later, bowled by Rishad Hossain.

His innings of 29 came from 38 deliveries with a boundary and one six.

The Proteas had been 12-4 against the Dutch on the same pitch on Saturday.

On Monday, they were quickly four down for just 23 runs in the fifth over thanks to Tanzim and Taskin.

Tanzim, playing in only his eighth T20 international, started the collapse, having out-of-form opener Reeza Hendricks lbw for nought off his first ball.

Star batsman Quinton de Kock was the next to go, clean-bowled by the 21-year-old for 18 with the total on 19.

Taskin uprooted the stumps of Markram (four) before Tanzim grabbed the third of his opening spell when he forced Tristan Stubbs to spoon a catch to Shakib Al Hasan in the covers without scoring.

Miller could have been dismissed on 13 but wicket-keeper Liton Das dropped an edge off Mahmudullah's first ball.

With South Africa virtually certain of a place in the second round Super Eight phase, Bangladesh, with two points, are still well-placed to join them.

T20 World Cup 2024: South Africa beat Bangladesh by four runs to win another low-scoring thriller

Bangladesh cricket team were on the wrong end in yet another low-scoring thriller in the T20 World Cup on Monday (June 11) evening after they lost by four runs to South Africa. The result which sees Bangladesh’s Super Eight qualification hopes hang in the balance had a controversial point that could have seen the result go either way. An International Cricket Council (ICC) umpiring protocol was the main reason for it which has now put South Africa on the brink of reaching the next stage.

What was the incident?

On the second ball of the 17th over bowled by South Africa’s Ottneil Baartman to Mahmudullah in Bangladesh innings, the batter was adjudged LBW out by the standing umpire. In the meantime, the ball ran away for four while no South African player attempted to stop the ball. Considering the batter was already given out, the next phase of play which was the ball running out for four runs was considered void and the runs were not counted.

Mahmudullah then took a Decision Review System (DRS) and challenged the on-field call. Upon review by the third umpire, it was confirmed that Mahmudullah was not out and was allowed to continue to bat.

However, ICC’s umpiring rules state that as soon as a decision is made during an LBW shout, the next phase is considered void even if a batter is adjudged not out by the third umpire. As a result, despite being given not out for the original appeal, the four runs were not counted due to the loophole in ICC’s rules.

What would have happened if the original decision was not out?

In the above case, since the umpire had given out and made his decision, the next phase was considered void. However, if the original decision was not out, then the umpire would have been obliged to give Bangladesh four leg bye runs and therefore they would have needed fewer runs than originally required. Had South Africa challenged the call and asked for the DRS, the original decision would have been retained in favour of Bangladesh and four runs would have been awarded to Shakib Al Hasan’s side.

Bangladesh later went on to lose the match in the final over by four runs which has now sparked anger amongst their supporters. They are next in action on Thursday against the Netherlands before taking on Nepal in their final group match on Sunday.

Explained: Why Bangladesh were denied four runs in 17th over resulting in narrow T20 World Cup defeat to SA

Pakistan's bowling coach Azhar Mahmood has defended Babar Azam-led Pakistani players who have been slammed for shopping and dining out after their T20 World Cup loss versus India on Sunday (June 9) in New York.

Babar & Co. opted to bowl first at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium, New York and rode on Haris Rauf and Naseem Shah's three-fers, along with Mohammad Amir's 2 for 23, to dismiss India for 119.

However, the Men in Green only managed 113 for 7 to lose by six runs.

After the game, the likes of Azam Khan were spotted at street eateries in New York whereas some others were seen shopping in the city.

This led to severe criticism of the Pakistan squad, who are at the brink of early elimination at the T20 WC -- being held in West Indies and the USA.

Mahmood, however, defended the Pakistan team while talking to reporters ahead of Pakistan's next game, versus Canada on Tuesday (June 11).

He said, "Life does not end after a loss."

T20 WC: 'Life does not...' - Mahmood defends Pakistan players for shopping and dining out post India defeat

Former Indian cricketer Virender Sehwag has slammed Bangladesh all-rounder Shakib Al-Hasan for his poor form at the ongoing T20 World Cup. Sehwag suggested Shakib had overstayed his welcome in the shortest format of the game and that he should come forward and announce retirement.

The Indian opener ripped into Shakib after the all-rounder could not engineer a 114-run chase against South Africa, despite coming in to bat at no. 4.

"During the last World Cup, I thought he should no longer be picked for the T20 format. Time for retirement came a long time ago. You are such a senior player, you were the captain of this team. You should actually be ashamed of your recent numbers. You should come forward and announce yourself that enough is enough, I'm retiring from this format," said Sehwag on Cricbuzz.

The verbal onslaught continued from Sehwag who said Shakib was a Bangladeshi player and that he did not need to emulate the Australian greats such as Adam Gilchrist and Matthew Hayden.

"If you are picked in the World Cup squad for your experience, then show that it was actually worth it. You need to spend some time at the crease at least. You are not Adam Gilchrist or Mathew Hayden. Hooks and pulls are not your strengths. You are a Bangladeshi player. You play according to your strength," he added.

Tough task for Bangladesh

Bangladesh are still in contention of making it to the Super 8 stage of the tournament, having won the first match against Sri Lanka. However, the team has looked far from convincing and Shakib's form has been a major part of the poor performances.

In the opener against Sri Lanka, Shakib only managed eight off 14 deliveries while against the Proteas, Anrich Nortje troubled him with his express pace.

With matches against Netherlands and Nepal upcoming, Shakib and Bangladesh will have to bring their A-game to secure qualification. Despite being a regular at the big-boys table for the last decade, Bangladesh's performance in the ICC tournaments has been nothing to write home about.

'Come forward and...': Virender Sehwag's brutal suggestion to Shakib Al-Hasan after T20 World Cup failure

Pakistan men's cricket team captain Babar Azam continues to face flak from former cricketers and fans after his team lost the T20 World Cup match against India. After legendary pacer Wasim Akram went on an explosive rant against the team, former allrounder Shahid Afridi has suggested that Babar needs to be dropped at no. 3 for the balance of the team.

Pakistan have been struggling to get off the blocks in the powerplay overs, primarily due to Babar and Mohammad Rizwan being similar kind of players. Afridi suggested that head coach Gary Kirsten make the necessary changes as Pakistan still had not exited the tournament.

“I think now is the time for Gary Kirsten and Babar Azam to make some changes. I would like to see Salman Ali Agha come into the side in place of Usman Khan and Abrar Ahmed to come in for Shadab Khan,” said Afridi.

“Most of all, I believe Fakhar Zaman should be promoted to open the innings alongside Mohammad Rizwan, with Babar dropping down to number three," he added.

Pakistan are in the precipice of exiting the World Cup. A poor outing against Canada on Tuesday (Jun 11) could be curtains for the team that has struggled in the shortest format of the game in the last couple of years.

“There are some tough conversations and choices to come but we need to remember that there is still hope, Pakistan are not out of the tournament yet," said Afridi.

While Afridi has argued for change in the batting order for Babar, other former cricketers have targetted the skipper for playing favouritism in the team and fooling the public.

Shahid Afridi believes Babar Azam needs 'dropping down' after T20 World Cup loss vs India

Veteran Pakistan batter Ahmed Shehzad launched a scathing attack on Babar Azam after Men in Green's six-run loss at the hands of India in the T20 World Cup on Sunday (June 9) in New York.

Babar-led Pakistan opted to bowl first at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York, and rode on Naseem Shah-Haris Rauf's three-fers along with Mohammad Amir's 2 for 23 to dismiss India for 119 in 19 overs. However, they fell flat in the run-chase, only managing 113 for 7 courtesy of Jasprit Bumrah's 3 for 14 and Hardik Pandya's 2 for 24.

After the match, Shehzad didn't mince his words on Babar, slamming him for his poor strike-rate in T20Is and inability to win key games for the side.

Shehzad, who last played for Pakistan in 2019, alleged that Babar has built a Pakistan team on the basis of friendships.

On a Pakistani cricket show, the right-hander said, "You have hallucinated people by scoring runs against B, C, and D teams. Your salaries were increased by PCB to evolve your game, but you put their money on social media for image building and nothing else."

Shehzad further opined, "Look at your scores in big tournaments, your stats, your average and your strike rate. What kind of a king Babar Azam … Iss king ka kya karu jisne match nahi jitwana hai. (What do I do with a King who does not win you matches). There is a stat that your big scores have come in losing causes.”

The 32-year-old pointed out, "You have picked your friends and given them 40 matches to prove their worth and this is hurting Pakistan cricket. You can give 40 matches to this 40-year-old (pointing towards former Pakistani player Imran Nazir) and he will also give you performances at this age. Look at our domestic performers, they are ignored and they are leaving the country, going to the USA, and UAE to play cricket."

Shehzad slammed Babar for his inability to build a team despite being the captain for five years.

In this regard, he added, "You are a middle-order batter and a leader and you had five years to build the team; but you have not been able to develop a single middle-order batter, there is no proper all-rounder in the team. Aapne kisi ko ban ne nahi diya, aapko sirf thulle chahiye thee, ji aap upar se 15 over khlele, aur fir neeche se aake aaknhe band karke maarte jaae. (You did not develop anyone, you only needed players who hit blindly because you want to bat for 15 overs and then have these players come in and try to hit blindly)."

Babar has had an ordinary start in the T20 WC.

He made an ineffective 43-ball 44 versus USA, against whom Pakistan lost in the Super Over, before only managing 13 off 10 balls versus India.

Time and again, questions have been raised on his strike-rate; i.e. an ordinary 129.77 in the format.

Moreover, many have pointed fingers at his inability to stand tall with the bat against stronger teams.

Thus, the right-hander is under the scanner for his batting as well as for his ordinary leadership with Pakistan reeling at the T20 WC, being held in West Indies and USA.
