T20 WC: Explained! How ICC's new rule awarded India 5 penalty runs vs USA
India beat USA by seven wickets in what was a hard-fought low-scoring affair in the ongoing T20 World Cup on Wednesday (June 12). Playing at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium, New York, India kept their winning run intact in the 20-nation tournament, being held in West Indies and the USA, to become the third team to proceed to the Super 8 stage. Chasing 111, India were made to work hard for every run but were awarded 5 penalty runs during the end overs. This eased their run-chase as they eventually won by seven wickets in 18.2 overs.
WHY WERE INDIA AWARDED 5 PENALTY RUNS VS USA?
It is to be noted that just before the start of the 16th over, stand-in captain Aaron Jones had a word with the umpires before USA were docked five penalty runs. Notably, the co-hosts went past 60 seconds to start a new over three times during the Indian innings. As per the new rules, it is considereda penalty. Hence, this changed the momentum of the game completely in India's favour. Before the penalty runs were awarded, India needed 35 off 30 balls but the equation changed to 30 off 30 deliveries, thanks to the new rule.
Following the penalty runs, USA's body language took a hit and they surrendered after putting up a good fight until then.
Talking about the contest, India opted to bowl first and rode on Arshdeep Singh's4 for 9 to restrict USA at 110/7. In reply, India-born Saurabh Netravalkar's early strikes dented India as he dismissed openers Virat Kohli and captain Rohit soon. From 10/2, the Men in Blue were further reduced to 39 for 3 before an unbeaten 72-run fourth-wicket stand between Suryakumar Yadav (50 not out) and Shivam Dube (31 not out) took them homein 18.2 overs.
