India would want to kick off their T20 World Cup campaign on a winning note at the latest edition of the tournament on Wednesday (June 5). India will start their campaign against Ireland in the T20 World Cup and will look to end their 17-year drought to win the coveted tournament. One player on everyone’s radar will be Virat Kohli who is in red-hot form having won the Orange Cap for scoring most runs in the recently concluded Indian Premier League (IPL 2024).

Smith backs Virat to flourish with bat

According to former Australia skipper Steve Smith Virat will end as the highest run scorer in the tournament which will see him continue the rich form. Virat scored 741 runs in 15 matches of the IPL and helped his Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) side reach the playoffs. However, those runs could not help his side to its maiden IPL win.

"My top run-getter for this tournament will be Virat Kohli. He is coming off a terrific IPL and he is bringing in some great form and I think he will be the leading run-getter," said Smith while speaking to ICC world feed coverage.

India are gearing up for their T20 World Cup 2024 opener, where they will take on Ireland at the Nassau County Cricket Ground in New York on Wednesday (June 5). Ahead of the start of the tournament, former Indian opener-turned-commentator Aakash Chopra issued a stern warning for the one-time winners and questioned the team's preparations and tactics. Chopra pointed fingers at captain Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli for being away from the shortest format for 14 months, following the last edition in Australia in late 2022, and even questioned the team's lack of role clarity.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Chopra questioned why India are still figuring out their playing XI. He further stated that every player should have known their respective roles before the tournament and not at the start of it.

'Shouldn't it be ideal that we should have known the opening combination by now?'

Chopra stated, "Are India underprepared for yet another T20 World Cup? Aren't we still figuring out our batting line-up? Who is the opener and the finisher? Should we get to know all these only in the World Cup? Yes, India like a left-right combination, but are almost certain to go with two right-handers: Rohit and Kohli. Rishabh Pant will likely bat at No. 3, followed by Suryakumar Yadav, and their dismissals will depend on whether India will next send Shivam Dube or Hardik Pandya. Then Ravindra Jadeja and Axar Patel. There are a lot of left-handers. But my question remains, why are we getting to know about this now? Shouldn't it be ideal that we should have known the opening combination by now?"

He further added, "Since the end of the last T20 World Cup in 2022, we have been playing with almost the same XI and the same batting order. So, what have we changed? And the roles that have changed, none were informed about it. It's not ideal. And it is because none of the senior players played since the last World Cup. I strongly feel we lack proper preparation. We are still trying to address it. We do have individual brilliance, but what happened last times was that we created a scene around the opening position. Between the World Cup in the UAE and Australia, we tried so many options for the opening role, including Suryakumar Yadav. But eventually, we opened with Rohit and Rahul, Kohli at 3...absolutely no use. That came back to haunt us. It's an early warning, but we haven't prepared well."

India head into the T20 WC with only one warm-up game since arriving in the United States, co-hosts of the mega event along with West Indies. India played Bangladesh in the warm-up encounter and came with a different batting line-up. It remains to be seen who will be India's openers in their first game, versus Ireland. Moreover, it also remains to be seen if Shivam Dube and Yashasvi Jaiswal will get a look-in. Thus, India have a lot of questions before their tournament opener, on Wednesday.

The 2007 winners are placed in Group A along with arch-rivals Pakistan, Ireland, USA and Canada.

'Are India underprepared for yet another T20 WC?': Former Indian opener issues warning to Rohit Sharma & Co

Ahead of Team India's T20 World Cup 2024 opener, on Wednesday (June 5), outgoing head coach Rahul Dravid lauded the national team for being consistent in major events despite their 11-year-long ICC title drought. India have not won an ICC trophy since 2013 Champions Trophy but have remained one of the most consistent sides, making it to the knockouts at regular intervals. Dravid stated that India isn't thinking about their trophy jinx and are focused on getting into the knockouts of the ongoing T20 WC in West Indies and USA.

Speaking to the press, two days before India's match versus Ireland in New York on Wednesday, Dravid said, "To be very honest with you, I think we've actually played really well in these World Cup tournaments. In terms of our consistency, we've been very consistent. Obviously making the semi-final in Australia (2022). The World Test Championship is slightly different, it's not one tournament, but it's a whole cycle but playing extremely well in that cycle to get to the final there again."

He further opined, "And then we know the 50-over World Cup where we had a great run and went into the final. So, in terms of our consistency and quality of cricket that we have played in these big tournaments, we've been right up there with some of the best teams."

Dravid mentioned, "Yes, we probably haven't been able to get across the line in the knockout game. So, we just probably haven't been able to execute in that last phase. So, hopefully we play good cricket to get ourselves into those positions again and then maybe play good cricket on the day to cross the line.

"The important thing is when you start these tournaments is not to think about that, is to actually think about getting into those positions. You have to find yourselves in those positions where you are pushing for glory and that's all you can do as a group and as a team," the fomrer Indian captain added.

Under Dravid, who took over as coach in late 2021, India reached the semifinals of the 2022 T20 WC, played the 2023 WTC final and also reached the home ODI WC final later in the year. With him set to quit his job post the ongoing competition, Rohit Sharma-led India will be keen to give him a fitting farewell with a T20 WC win.

T20 World Cup: Important not to think about ICC trophy jinx, says India coach Rahul Dravid before Ireland tie

Team India is gearing up for their T20 World Cup opener versus Ireland, on Wednesday (June 5) in New York. The one-time winners are preparing hard for a fine start and had an intense training session ahead of their clash versus the Irish clash. Virat Kohli, who missed India's sole warm-up match versus Bangladesh, headlined the Men in Blue's practice session where he batted for close to 40 minutes as the national side trained for close to three hours, at the Nassau County Cricket Ground on Monday evening.

Kohli was up against the likes of Jasprit Bumrah, Arshdeep Singh, Hardik Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja and Yuzvendra Chahal during his 40-minute batting session. The right-hander took time to get going, as he assessed the conditions, before playing his shots. Kohli judged the bounce on the training pitches, being fully well that the Nassau County Cricket Stadium has aided the fast bowlers so far in the 20-team tournament.

T20 WC: Virat Kohli headlines India's intense training session ahead of Ireland clash - Watch

Afghanistan captain Rashid Khan is confident of his team's run in T20 World Cup 2024, being held in the West Indies and USA. Many former cricketers and experts of the game have predicted that Afghanistan would reach the semifinals. The legspinner opened up on the predictions being made by the pundits and said that it is only a positive sign for the team -- highlighting their growth over the years -- ahead of their tournament opener versus Uganda, on Tuesday (Jun 4). Afghanistan impressed one and all in the last ICC event, i.e. the 2023 ODI World Cup in India, and narrowly missed out on a semifinal spot.

Ahead of Afghanistan's match versus Uganda, Rashid said, "A few people, they have mentioned Afghanistan is going to be there for semis. But we take that as a very positive sign, and something is there for us. Before, it used to be Afghanistan even contribution was harder for us to get qualified. And now to be nominated [nominated by experts], to be there in the top four. I think it's big for us, but for us, we don't look to those things a lot."

'Nothing is impossible for us as a team'

Rashid further highlighted how the last ODI WC performance has instilled faith in the team. He opined, "It's all about how we're going to be there in the ground, delivering. We were very near in the last World Cup [ODI World Cup] as well to be in the semis. We were just one game away from being in the semis and that's where I feel like the belief started that nothing is impossible and for us as a team. So yeah, looking forward we are really excited about this World Cup but as I said before as well, we take one game at a time and then see how it goes."

Rashid even stressed that Afghanistan are well prepared to handle the burden of expectations, emphasising that it is important for modern-day cricketers to perform under pressure.

In this regard, he stated, "Well, I feel in cricket there is always pressure. Either you play ICC events, or you play bilateral series, whatever the game you play, or any of the side against you play, there is always pressure. And for me, it's very simple. When there is pressure, you have to stick to your basics and you believe that basics what you can do and what is possible and what is under control."

"I feel that is more important than what people expect. So, the pressure will be there, but for us, and we need to keep it simple. We give 100% and you can't control that, like - the result. I think it's not under control. So, something not under our control, I feel like we better not think about it. And the pressure is always there, always there. But the more important thing is like, we stick to our basics, we do the right things, and we believe. I think that's the most important thing. I feel like we should do even under lots of pressure as well," Rashid added.

Ahead of the much-awaited India vs Pakistan match, on June 9 (Sunday) in New York, organisers and security officials are leaving no stone unturned for the smooth conduct of the match.
The ICC told the news outlet, "The safety and security of everyone at the event is our number one priority and we have a comprehensive and robust security plan in place." It added, "We work closely with authorities in our host countries and continually monitor and evaluate the global landscape to ensure appropriate plans are in place to mitigate any risks identified to our event."

Inspired by MS Dhoni, Kedar Jadhav announces retirement from all forms of cricket

Former West Indies cricketer-turned-commentator Ian Bishop feels Hardik Pandya has moved on from IPL 2024 setback and lauded the all-rounder for having a strong personality. In IPL 2024, Hardik had a torrid time both as captain and player. Returning to Mumbai Indians (MI), Hardik was booed by a wide section of fans, across the nation, for replacing Rohit Sharma as the MI captain.
Former Indian cricketer Gautam Gambhir has hinted at replacing Rahul Dravid as the men's team head coach after the 2024 T20 World Cup. Speaking at a recent event, Gambhir said he would "love to coach" the Indian side and called it the biggest honour that anyone can possibly have.

Gambhir's name has been floating around for a long time, especially after he guided Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to a third Indian Premier league (IPL) title, last month.

“I would love to coach the Indian team. There’s no bigger honour than coaching your national team. You are representing 140 crore Indians and more across the globe as well and when you represent India, how can it get bigger than that?” Gambhir was quoted as saying by news agency ANI. “It is not me that will help India win the World Cup, it is 140 crore Indians who will help India win the World Cup. If everyone starts praying for us and we start playing and representing them, India will win the World Cup,” the batter added. #WATCH | Abu Dhabi, UAE: “...I would love to coach the Indian team.
England speedster Brydon Carse has been handed a 16-month ban from playing any form of cricket after an anti-corruption investigation by the newly formed Cricket Regulator on Friday (May 31). Carse, who does not have a history of breaching the betting rules, will serve only three months of his suspension as he cooperated with the investigation with the rest of the 13 months suspended unless he is found guilty again. This makes him ineligible for any kind of selection as the ban will be served until August 28, meaning he will miss the early stage of The Hundred and England duties.

Carse handed suspended ban

An ECB spokesperson said: "We take these matters extremely seriously and do not condone any form of anti-corruption breach in cricket.

"We support the Cricket Regulator's decision and their consideration of the mitigating factors in Brydon's case. He has co-operated and shown remorse for his actions. We are satisfied that Brydon has shown growth in the five years since this breach and has demonstrated a greater understanding of his responsibilities."

It is reported that Carse placed 303 bets during 2017 and 2019 including matches for Durham, where he plays his domestic cricket. However, he did not place bets on the matches he played for Durham, thereby avoiding match-fixing charges. He also cooperated with the agencies which saw his ban being reduced to an initial 16 months to just three. He will now miss England duties while also missing the rest of the ongoing T20 Blast.

'Virat Kohli should bat at No.3 in T20 World Cup': Suresh Raina opines on former skipper's batting position

The ninth edition of the T20 World Cup kicks off on June 1 (Saturday) with 16 teams set to compete for the mega title. Ahead of the showpiece event, here is a look at the batters with the most runs in boundaries in the tournament history.

T20 World Cup - Batters with most runs in boundaries

Pakistan skipper Babar Azam created history during the fourth and final T20I between England and Pakistan on Thursday (May 30) at the Kennington Oval, London. He became only the second batter in men's T20I to join the 4,000-run club.

The right-hander achieved the feat during his 22-ball 36 to join Indian superstar Virat Kohli in the elusive club. Despite Babar's historic feat, Pakistan lost the final T20I by seven wickets and conceded the four-match series 2-0 to Jos Buttler & Co.

Most runs in men's T20Is

1. Virat Kohli - 4037 runs in 117 matches
2. Babar Azam - 4023 runs in 119 matches
3. Rohit Sharma - 3974 runs in 151 matches
4. Paul Stirling - 3589 runs in 142 matches
5. Martin Guptill - 3531 runs in 122 matches

Thus, during the match, Babar surpassed Indian captain Rohit Sharma's run tally and is now only 14 runs behind Kohli's.

It will be interesting to see who between Kohli and Babar will end the forthcoming T20 World Cup, which kicks off in June 1 in West Indies and USA, as the highest run-getter. Even Hitman isn't far behind and a good run in the T20 WC can propel him to the top spot.

Talking about 4,000-run club, Kohli remains the quickest batter to reach the milestone; attaining in just 107 innings (five innings quicker than Babar).

Meanwhile, Babar-led Pakistan fell flat in the fourth and final T20I versus England in London. Opting to bowl first, T20 champions England dismissed Men in Green for 157 in 19.5 overs. Most runs in men's T20Is 1. Virat Kohli - 4037 runs in 117 matches 2. Babar Azam - 4023 runs in 119 matches 3. Rohit Sharma - 3974 runs in 151 matches 4. Paul Stirling - 3589 runs in 142 matches 5. Martin Guptill - 3531 runs in 122 matches Also read: T20 World Cup 2024: Ricky Ponting picks Australia's Travis Head to be highest run-scorer | Read Why Thus, during the match, Babar surpassed Indian captain Rohit Sharma's run tally and is now only 14 runs behind Kohli's. Babar (36) and Usman Khan (38) top-scored for their side as Mark Wood, Adil Rashid and Liam Livingstone claimed two wickets apiece. In reply, England closed the game in 15.3 overs with vital contributions from their top-five. With this, the hosts clinched the series 2-0, having already won the second T20I by 23 runs.
Former Australia skipper Ricky Ponting has picked Travis Head to be the highest run-scorer at the upcoming T20 World Cup 2024 in the USA and West Indies.
Former Australia captain Michael Clarke has backed the high-risk approach of star man Travis Head as they prepare for the T20 World Cup in the USA and West Indies. Head, who had a superb Indian Premier League (IPL 2024) season for SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH) has endured a reputation for a hard-hitting opener in the T20 format. While he was superb with Abhishek Sharma at the top for SRH, he will now partner David Warner in the Australian set-up at the opening slot.

Clarke backs Travis Head

"I think it's the way he plays. Travis Head has certainly made a conscious effort to be more aggressive, even in Test cricket. So I think when you play like that, you're always going to take more risks and in this format, T20, he is opening the batting, he knows how important the first 6 overs are," Clarke said while speaking to Espncricinfo.

"You know, it is maximum risk, maximum reward. I wouldn't be too concerned about him not making as many runs as we would like... I would rather see him get a duck than a 20-ball-10. When you are batting in that position, get him or get out," he added.

Australia are one of the favourites to win the T20 World Cup and will play under the services of Head who scored 567 runs in the IPL 2024. However, Head had an off day in the final as he was dismissed for a golden duck resulting in a slow start for SRH. 'I would rather see him get a duck': Michael Clarke backs Travis Head's high-risk approach ahead of T20 WC

All eyes are now on the commencement of the 2024 T20 World Cup to be jointly-held in West Indies and USA in June. The main focus is on the India-Pakistan game on June 9 in New York. Ahead of the mega clash, there are concerns about security at the Nassau Country Cricket Stadium, the venue in Long Island in New York. Security personnel are preparing for the possibility of a potential lone wolf attack and are taking extensive measures to prevent disruptions.

According to Wikipedia, lone wolf attack "is a particular kind of mass murder, committed in a public setting by an individual who plans and commits the act on their own."

The Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman and Police Commissioner Patrick Ryder revealed the security situation to the media on Wednesday morning (Eastern Time).

Blakeman was quoted as saying by CBS News, "Each and every day, Nassau County, as well as other communities and cities and counties and towns throughout the United States, receive all kinds of threats. We take every threat seriously."

He further opined, "To that end, we have taken many, many precautions. As well as making sure that the stadium and the surrounding Eisenhower Park are safe, the parking areas are safe, the watch areas are safe, we also are adding 100 additional police officers to our normal staffing for the rest of the county, just as a precaution."

One particular tip-off was regarding a likely lone wolf attack on the June 9 game, as per the report which attributed it to the police commissioner. "When you've got a game and a crowd as big as this, everything is credible. We will go through every fine detail when it comes to the security and safety of the residents here in Nassau County. I can guarantee you this is the largest security we've ever had to do in this county's history, and I can also guarantee you the safest place to be in Nassau County on June 9 will be inside that stadium," Ryder mentioned.

It is to be noted that this is the first instance of an India-Pakistan being held in New York. Thus the hype and hysteria surrounding the game between the two arch-rivals is new to the local authorities as well. In addition, it has led to the Governor of New York State getting involved. She has emphasised that public safety will be her priority.

The office of Kathy Hochul said in a statement released on Wednesday (May 29) morning, "In preparation for the Cricket World Cup, my Administration has been working for months with federal law enforcement and Nassau County to ensure New Yorkers and visitors are safe. This has included close coordination with the New York State Police Counter Terrorism Unit and New York State Police Troop L, based on Long Island. While there is no credible public safety threat at this time, we continue to monitor the situation closely. I have also directed the New York State Police to engage in elevated security measures, including an increased law enforcement presence, advanced surveillance, and thorough screening processes. Public safety is my top priority and we are committed to ensuring the Cricket World Cup is a safe, enjoyable experience."

Meanwhile, a spokesperson for the International Cricket Council (ICC) stated, "The safety and security of everyone at the event is our number one priority and we have a comprehensive and robust security plan in place. We work closely with authorities in our host countries and continually monitor and evaluate the global landscape to ensure appropriate plans are in place to mitigate any risks identified to our event."

According to Wikipedia, lone wolf attack "is a particular kind of mass murder, committed in a public setting by an individual who plans and commits the act on their own." The Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman and Police Commissioner Patrick Ryder revealed the security situation to the media on Wednesday morning (Eastern Time). Blakeman was quoted as saying by CBS News, "Each and every day, Nassau County, as well as other communities and cities and counties and towns throughout the United States, receive all kinds of threats. We take every threat seriously." He further opined, "To that end, we have taken many, many precautions. As well as making sure that the stadium and the surrounding Eisenhower Park are safe, the parking areas are safe, the watch areas are safe, we also are adding 100 additional police officers to our normal staffing for the rest of the county, just as a precaution." One particular tip-off was regarding a likely lone wolf attack on the June 9 game, as per the report which attributed it to the police commissioner. Public safety is my top priority and we are committed to ensuring the Cricket World Cup is a safe, enjoyable experience." Meanwhile, a spokesperson for the International Cricket Council (ICC) stated, "The safety and security of everyone at the event is our number one priority and we have a comprehensive and robust security plan in place. We work closely with authorities in our host countries and continually monitor and evaluate the global landscape to ensure appropriate plans are in place to mitigate any risks identified to our event."
"I think Australia have a great opportunity, and I hope they take it in this World Cup, and that is to pick Nathan Ellis. He would be my third quick," Paine said on ESPN's Around The Wicket podcast.

"I'm going to pick one of them and I'm going to go with Nathan Ellis' all-round skills, his ability to bowl all through the powerplay, I think his slower balls, he's clever.
