Mitchell Starc returned to the Indian Premier League (IPL) after a nine-year-hiatus and won the IPL 2024 title while representing the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). Joining the KKR franchise for a whopping INR 24.75 crore, Starc didn't have the best of starts but the Australian pacer was in top gear during the IPL playoffs. He ended with 3 for 34 in Qualifier 1, versus the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), and bettered it with 2 for 14 in the final, on Sunday (May 26), versus the same opponent, to win the Player-of-the-Match award. After the IPL final win, Starc hinted at his ODI retirement in order to prolong his career in franchise cricket.

Having missed the IPL for several years, for national duty, Starc hinted at his retirement from one of the formats, mainly the 50-over format, to be more present in franchise leagues. At the post-match presentation, Starc said, "Last 9 years I have prioritised Australian cricket and IPL has been my time off and give my body a break and spend some time with my wife also. That's certainly been what the outlook has been for the last 9 years. Moving forward, look, certainly I am closer to the end of my career than the start, so, one format may drop off. It is a long time away, the next ODI World Cup and whether that format continues for me or not, it may open doors for more franchise cricket, so, I have thoroughly enjoyed this season, it leads into the World Cup, so that's the other side of it, the benefit of being here."

He further mentioned, "It is an amazing tournament with amazing players and the success has been fantastic."

IPL 2024 Final, SRH vs KKR: Hyderabad get all out for lowest total in IPL final

SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH) captain Pat Cummins opted to bat first after winning the toss in the Indian Premier League (IPL) final against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). The decision, though, backfired in the powerplay overs as SRH lost three wickets, including the dangerous opening duo of Abhishek Sharma and Travis Head.

During the toss, Cummins reasoned that batting first on the deck with no dew in the second half may favour his side.

"We will bat first. Looks like a good wicket. Never the best at reading wickets. Played at a different one in the last, this looks different. There was no dew the other night so hopefully it's the same tonight," Cummins told presenter Ravi Shastri.

"Fingers crossed that today is one of those nights. Yeah we will give it a crack. Look it's a different wicket. We defended a score there, good to be back here. I mean it's different soil," he added.

However, his KKR counterpart, Shreyas Iyer had a different reading of the pitch, due to its red-soil composition.

"We would have bowled. Obviously, you have a fair idea on how the wicket will play. It's a red soil and we played our last game on a similar surface. We chased in first qualifier so backing that," said Iyer.

The Australian's new-ball partner, Vaibhav Arora was the next to strike as he got Head to poke at an outside off delivery. Rahul Tripathi didn't last long either and skied one straight up in the air which was snaffled up with utmost ease by Ramandeep Singh.

🚨 Toss Update 🚨 Sunrisers Hyderabad 🧡 elect to bat in the #Final against Kolkata Knight Riders 💜 Follow the Match ▶️ https://t.co/lCK6AJCdH9#TATAIPL | #KKRvSRH | #TheFinalCall pic.twitter.com/f4PWxfLFEK — IndianPremierLeague (@IPL) May 26, 2024 × However, his KKR counterpart, Shreyas Iyer had a different reading of the pitch, due to its red-soil composition. "We would have bowled. Obviously, you have a fair idea on how the wicket will play. It's a red soil and we played our last game on a similar surface. We chased in first qualifier so backing that," said Iyer. "We need to stay with the present, stick to the basics and execute all our plans. Every individual is taking responsibility, this is a big game, we've plenty of people who're playing in a final for the first time, nervous, but this is also a good chance. We're going with the same team." As it turned out, KKR read the conditions perfectly well as Mitchell Starc rose to the big occasion yet again and castled Sharma with a ripper of a delivery.
"I was definitely struggling after the World Cup in the longer format," Iyer said on the eve of the IPL final against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in Chennai. "When I raised my concern, no one was agreeing to it," he added.

Iyer had returned to India ODI team in Asia Cup prior to ODI World Cup 2023 after recovering from the back spams. After the ODI WC, he was selected in India's squad for England for the two Tests. He had complained of back spasms ahead of the second Test but was cleared to play.

As for IPL, Iyer took over the captaincy after missing out the last season. Knight Riders finished atop the points table after the league stage with nine wins, two no results and only three losses in 14 games.

On Thursday (May 23), USA stunned a full-strength Bangladesh side for the second successive time by winning the second and penultimate T20I, of the three-match series, in Houston. After winning the series opener, where USA chased down 154 without dropping much sweat, the hosts looked a lot more confident and defended a moderate 144/6 at the Prairie View Cricket Complex, Houston courtesy of Ali Khan's three-fer to help his side claim an unassailable 2-0 lead in the series.

The series win is a historic achievement for USA, who will be co-hosting the upcoming 2024 T20 World Cup along with West Indies in June. The mega event kicks off on June 1 and USA, who will play the tournament-opener versus Canada, would be beaming in confidence after attaining their maiden T20I series win versus Bangladesh, their first against a Test-playing nation in T20 cricket.

Talking about the match, Bangladesh opted to bowl first. USA openers started off nicely with a 44-run opening stand. Throughout the innings, USA batters couldn't raise the tempo but also didn't lose wickets in clusters. Riding on captain-cum-wicketkeeper Monank Patel's 42 and Aaron Jones' 35 (34), the home team managed 144-6 on a sluggish surface.

In reply, the Bangla Tigers were expected to chase down the moderate score and level the series. Nonetheless, they kept losing wickets at regular intervals. Captain Najmul Hossain Shanto (36) and Shakib Al Hasan (30) showed some resistance but couldn't carry on for long as Ali (3 for 25), Shadley van Schalkwyk (2 for 21) and Saurabh Netravalkar (2 for 15) dismissed Bangladesh for 138 in 19.3 overs.

Bangladesh captain Shanto said after the loss, "Very disappointing for us. We lost wickets in the middle overs, that was the reason why we lost. IPL 2024: All-round Rajasthan Royals eliminate Royal Challengers Bengaluru to enter second qualifier

Former England captain-turned-commentator Kevin Pietersen has urged Virat Kohli to leave Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) to achieve his dream of winning an IPL trophy following his side's 4-wicket loss to Rajasthan Royals (RR) in IPL 2024's Eliminator, on Wednesday (May 22) in Ahmedabad. RCB entered the playoffs on the back of a six-match winning streak only to bow out in the Eliminator after failing to defend 172/8.

After the match, Pietersen asked Kohli to consider leaving RCB -- who remain without an IPL trophy since 2008 when the tournament commenced. The former English captain feels that Kohli deserves an IPL trophy and, hence, his best shot is leaving the RCB franchise (where he has been associated since 2008).

'Virat Kohli deserves to play in a team that could help him to get that trophy'

Talking to Star Sports, Pietersen said, "I have said it before and I will say it again -- the greats of the game in other sports, have left teams to go and seek glory somewhere else. When he has tried and tried so hard -- won the Orange Cap yet again and done so much yet again and the franchise fails again I understand for the brand of the team and the commercial value he brings to the team... But Virat Kohli deserves a trophy. He deserves to play in a team that could help him to get that trophy."

"I actually think it should be Delhi. Delhi is the place where Virat needs to go. Virat can go away, and stay at home most of the time, I know he has a home in Delhi. He has a young family. He can spend more time there. He is a Delhi boy. Why can't he go back? Delhi are as desperate as Bengaluru," he further mentioned.

Pietersen further cited the examples of football superstars such as Cristiano Ronaldo, David Beckham, Lionel Messi and others who left their previous clubs for better success and brighter future.

"I think it's about time Virat thought long and hard. Beckham left, Ronaldo left, Messi left, Harry Kane just left Spurs and went to Bayern Munich," he added.

They rode on Kohli's 33 (24), Rajat Patidar's 34 (22) and Mahipal Lomror's 32 (17) to post 172-8. RR bowlers Avesh Khan and R Ashwin combined to share five scalps. In reply, Rajasthan emerged on top in a nail-biting run-chase courtesy of Yashasvi Jaiswal's 45 (30) and useful knocks from Riyan Parag, Shimron Hetmyer and Rovman Powell.
