Virat Kohli recently recalled his World Cup debut in 2011, where he scored a magnificent 100 in India's face-off versus Bangladesh in what was the 50-over mega event's tournament opener. Ahead of India's T20 World Cup 2024 warm-up game versus Bangladesh on June 1 in New York, Kohli spoke about his WC debut, which came during his second year in international cricket. On Feb 19, India faced Bangladesh in the 2011 ODI WC opener, in Mirpur, where the then MS Dhoni-led India rode on Virender Sehwag's 175 and Kohli's 100* to post 370-4 and later won by 87 runs.

In a recent interaction on Star Sports, Kohli admitted that he had butterflies in his stomach ahead of his WC debut. He got a chance to play alongside Sachin Tendulkar, Gautam Gambhir, Sehwag, Dhoni, Yuvraj Singh, Zaheer Khan, Harbhajan Singh and the likes and, thus, was nervous.

Kohli said, "It was (World Cup debut) against Bangladesh in Dhaka (in Mirpur), my first game and I was nervous. Yes, I will not lie. There is a different sense of excitement in the air when you come for a World Cup and I could obviously sense that. I was the youngest member of that team and I was getting to play with all these greats of Indian cricket in a World Cup game."

'Nervousness helped me to be aware and alert'

The former Indian captain further added, "For me it was definitely a moment where I was a bit nervous heading into the game and definitely the night before I was quite nervous but that is a good sign as well because your body is preparing you to enter a situation where you’re alert, you’re not taking things for granted. I think that nervousness helped me to be aware, be alert and be absolutely precise in the execution of my plans."

Kohli had a memorable outing where he slammed an unbeaten 100 off 83 balls (8 fours and 2 sixes) and was also involved in a mammoth 203-run third-wicket stand with Player-of-the-Match Sehwag (whose 175 was laced with 14 fours and 4 sixes). As a result, India stormed past the Bangla Tigers and later went onto win the 2011 edition, co-hosted by India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, by beating the Lankans in the final at Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai.

Since then, Kohli hasn't looked behind and been India's go-to-man in ODI WCs. He has 1,795 runs (second-most) in 37 games at an average of 59.83 with 5 centuries. He ended the 2023 edition, held in India, with most runs by a batter in a single edition (765). Even in T20 WC history, he is the leading run-getter with 1,141 runs starting from 2012-22.

Talking about India's upcoming T20 WC campaign, in West Indies and USA, Kohli's form will be crucial for Rohit Sharma & Co. India will begin their campaign on June 5 versus Ireland in New York. They are placed in Group A alongside Pakistan, USA, Ireland and Canada.

T20 World Cup: Virat Kohli remains the only missing face as Indian players undergo training

India’s vice-captain Hardik Pandya has arrived in New York as he gears up for the T20 World Cup which starts on Saturday (June 1) in the USA and West Indies. Hardik, who did not travel with the rest of the Indian squad, arrived from London and avoided taking a direct flight to the financial capital of the United States. Hardik will now look to make headlines for all the right reasons after being in the news for a reported divorce from his wife Nataša Stanković.

Hardik Pandya arrives in New York

After he arrived in New York, Hardik took to his social media handle and posted pictures of his training and was seen ready for the marquee tournament. He posted pictures of him in the Indian training gear and swimming in the team hotel. He looks in great shape for the tournament where India will be one of the favourites to win the T20 World Cup. Hardik was in decent form during the recently concluded Indian Premier League (IPL 2024) season but faced criticism for his poor captaincy.

With just four wins throughout the season, MI finished bottom of the league for the second time in the last three seasons.

Hardik’s reported divorce from Nataša

According to several reports in Indian media, Nataša and Hardik are on the verge of filing for a divorce. This comes after the Serbian model changed her name on social media handles, raising speculations of friction between the couple. Hardik Pandya arrives in New York After he arrived in New York, Hardik took to his social media handle and posted pictures of his training and was seen ready for the marquee tournament. Hardik’s reported divorce from Nataša According to several reports in Indian media, Nataša and Hardik are on the verge of filing for a divorce. This comes after the Serbian model changed her name on social media handles, raising speculations of friction between the couple. Nataša was also seen on a casual date with a friend in Mumbai around the time Hardik ended the IPL season.
Rana had mentioned the text message on Sunday (May 26) after KKR lifted their third IPL trophy, defeating SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH) in what was a one-sided contest.

"I want to share one short story that when GG bhaiya (Gambhir) was named the mentor, I sent him a long message as I was really happy," Rana told the broadcasters.

"But he replied saying, 'Thank you but I would be happy if we stand at the podium with the trophy in our hands'. Today is that day and I will never forget that message," he added.

This means a lot. Let’s create something special. There is no better feeling in sport to stand on a podium and win a trophy. Let’s experience that,” Gambhir’s text read. Narendra Modi, MS Dhoni, Amit Shah: Fake applicants use famous names for India cricket head coach job

Virat Kohli's childhood coach Rajkumar Sharma has picked MS Dhoni as India's next head coach. The current head coach Rahul Dravid's tenure is about to end following the 2024 T20 World Cup, in the West Indies and the USA in June. The official deadline to apply for the top post was May 27. While some big foreign names distanced themselves from taking the top job, it is highly likely that an Indian will take over from Dravid. Reports have indicated that Gautam Gambhir is being looked upon as a strong candidate, however, Kohli's coach has suggested Dhoni's name should he retire from IPL.

Talking on India News' programme CRICIT PREDICTA, Sharma said, "First of all, it will be interesting to see which names apply for this post. I would like that whoever becomes the coach should be an Indian. If Mahendra Singh Dhoni announces retirement, he can prove to be a good option. Sharma added, "Dhoni will have more respect in the dressing room and he has played this format for a long time. Despite this, Dhoni handled the team brilliantly."

MS Dhoni to be India head coach? Virat Kohli’s coach suggests him as contender

Former Indian cricketer-turned-commentator Sanjay Manjrekar feels Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma will not repeat their mistakes from the 2022 T20 World Cup in the upcoming edition. The 2024 T20 World Cup kicks off on June 1 with Rohit-led India placed in Group A along with arch-rivals Pakistan, Ireland, USA and Canada. Before their tournament opener, Manjrekar opined that India bowed out of the 2022 edition due to Rohit-Kohli's defensive approach in the semifinals, where they lost to eventual winners England by 10 wickets, but feels the duo will not repeat their mistakes this time around.

'India had lost T20 WC 2022 semifinal due to Kohli, Rohit's knocks'

Manjrekar wrote in his column, "In the last T20 World Cup two years ago, in the semis against England in Adelaide, India batted first and got only 168 runs in 20 overs, and a shocking 62 in the first 10. The bulk of deliveries in this crucial period were faced by the seniors, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. Rohit got 27 off 28 balls at a strike rate of 96, while Virat scored 50 off 40 balls at a strike rate of 125, eventually getting out in the 18th over."

"India had lost the tournament right there. Thanks to Hardik Pandya’s 63 off 33 balls, at a strike rate of 190, India had something to show on the board. England, unsurprisingly, chased the target in 16 overs with 10 wickets in hand," Manjrekar recounted the semifinal loss.

However, Manjrekar feels Rohit and Kohli will not be making the same mistakes this time around as the Hitman has resorted to ultra-aggressive approach at the top whereas Kohli has also improved his power-hitting versus spin outside the powerplays. Manjrekar added, "Having said this, we can be sure of one thing. Rohit and Virat will not commit the same mistakes made in that semis. It’s worth acknowledging that Virat is not the same T20 player he was two years ago. He must know deep down, surely, that the ‘outside noise’ has actually made him a better T20 batter today than he was two years ago."

"Is there still a lingering risk attached to Virat – that when it comes to the big stage, the knockout games, he is preoccupied with batting longer rather than batting quicker? For Indian cricket’s sake, let’s hope this preoccupation is buried deep," the former batter concluded.

In the recent past, Rohit has been very aggressive with the bat at the top (especially in the 2023 ODI World Cup and during the T20Is versus Afghanistan early this year). Meanwhile, Kohli struck at an impressive 154.69 in IPL 2024, ending with most runs (741) in the just-concluded league. Both the batters are expected to continue their run-scoring spree, at a higher strike-rate, in the upcoming T20 WC, in West Indies and USA.

IPL 2024: Lucrative monetary benefit announced for groundsmen and curators by BCCI

Former Indian cricketer Robin Uthappa has lauded Shreyas Iyer after the latter led Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to IPL 2024 win. In the final, held in Chennai on Sunday (May 26), KKR beat Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) by eight wickets while chasing 114. With this, KKR won their third IPL title, first after 2014. With this win, many have lauded Iyer for his captaincy and the way he managed the big players of KKR such as Sunil Narine, Andre Russell, Mitchell Starc, etc. After the finale, former Indian cricketer, and two-time IPL winner, Robin Uthappa made a big claim, saying Iyer can be the next Indian captain.

'Shreyas Iyer has got the character and wherewithal to handle a team'

Uthappa said on Jio Cinema, "I am going to say it here. He is going to be the future India captain. I think he is next in line, maybe even ahead of Shubman Gill. He has got the character and wherewithal to handle a team. I think there’s a lot he has learnt this season. You have got to understand that he was working with Gautam Gambhir, Chandrkant Pandit and Abhishek Nayar – three very strong personalities."

"You have to navigate your way through these strong personalities throughout the season while having your way, and learning on the run. That’s not easy to navigate through an entire IPL season while performing, giving your best and making the right calls. He has done that with utter dominance. That tells you a lot about his character and what he believes he is capable of. I think because of that, he sets himself up in the right space to be in the conversation for the next Indian captain," Uthappa further added.

Iyer hasn't got anything easily in recent times. He was India's third-best batter in the ODI World Cup, at home, last year. The right-hander ended with 530 runs in the mega event, at an average of 66.25 and a strike-rate of 113.24. However, he soon got sidelined due to back issues -- which has caused him to miss many international games in the past -- and then lost his BCCI contract prior to IPL 2024. Iyer started this year's IPL with injury scares but that didn't deter his confidence as he ended with useful contributions with the bat, managing 351 runs, and marshalled his troops brilliantly from the word go.

Uthappa was all praise for Iyer for his fighting spirit and resistance. In this regard, he said, "Even after going through a lot, the back injury, the World Cup snub, not getting a central contract – a lot of conjecture about what was happening with him. He barely spoke about it, I think just before the final, he touched upon it. I think that goes to show he has got his sight clear on what he is going to do for himself and the teams he plays for. I think it’s just the beginning of the leader that we are going to see Shreyas Iyer is going to be."

After the win in the final, Iyer said at the post-match presentation, "We played like invincibles throughout the season. There's so much to cherish right now. It is pleasing, the performance has been flawless throughout. I am running out of words right now. We have been tremendous from game one, we stepped up today. All we demanded from ourselves was to back each other whatever the situation is."

Iyer isn't part of India's T20 World Cup 2024 squad. However, he has made a big statement by becoming an IPL-winning captain. The 29-year-old has made the right noise to be considered as a future Indian captain, post the Rohit Sharma-era.

'Shreyas Iyer has got the character and wherewithal to handle a team' Uthappa said on Jio Cinema, "I am going to say it here. He is going to be the future India captain. I think he is next in line, maybe even ahead of Shubman Gill. He has got the character and wherewithal to handle a team. I think there’s a lot he has learnt this season. You have got to understand that he was working with Gautam Gambhir, Chandrkant Pandit and Abhishek Nayar – three very strong personalities." "You have to navigate your way through these strong personalities throughout the season while having your way, and learning on the run.
