Babar Azam has recovered 90% from the finger injury he suffered in the lead-up to the Test series against England and is now confirmed to return and lead his team in the second Test at Lord’s. Babar suffered a blow to the middle finger of his right hand while batting during Pakistan’s only warm-up match in Beckenham, and thus was ruled out of the series opener at Headingley, which Pakistan lost inside three days. While bowling coach Umar Gul provided a key update on Babar’s fitness, saying he looked comfortable during the net sessions on Tuesday, Pakistan’s talismanic batter confirmed his comeback to the playing XI. "I had a couple of practice sessions," Babar said on the eve of the match. Rain has delayed Team India’s series-sweeping win in Colombo on day four after India enforced the follow-on and subsequently reduced Sri Lanka to 229 for six at stumps. The hosts lead by only 16 runs with four wickets and a day full of cricket remaining, as Team India leads the charge. Cricketer-turned-broadcaster Sanjay Manjrekar has urged the BCCI and ICC to make examples of Indian openers Yashasvi Jaiswal and Vaibhav Sooryavanshi for their outbursts over dismissals and send-offs. While Jaiswal and Sri Lankan seamer Asitha Fernando were slapped with a 25% fine on their match fees and handed a demerit point each, Manjrekar feels the punishment should be stricter.
What happened between Jaiswal and Asitha?
Just after Asitha’s almost unplayable incoming delivery crashed into the wickets, dismissing the well-set Indian opener for 45, Jaiswal stood there in disbelief. India's teenage prodigy Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, known for his aggressive and scintillating batting style, showed off his bowling prowess in the Duleep Trophy match. Playing for East Zone, Sooryavanshi failed with the bat, scoring only eight runs off six balls in his team's only batting innings, but picked up two wickets in one over in the three overs he bowled in the match. Sooryavanshi's left-arm spin, coupled with his fearless batting at the top, could prove beneficial for him in the bright future ahead, where he is expected to shine for India at the international level.
Sooryavanshi shows off bowling skills in Duleep Trophy
The batter did not bowl in North East Zone's first innings, in which the team scored 111 in reply to East Zone's mammoth 467. Barely a week after England Test captain Joe Root urged his teammates to be ‘man enough and responsible role models’, another case of a drunken English cricketer creating disorder made headlines. Pakistan Test captain Babar Azam has shown positive signs in his recovery from the finger injury that kept him out of the series opener at Headingley. Two days before the second Test match begins on Thursday at Lord’s, Babar trained in the nets and looked good, Pakistan’s bowling coach Umar Gul said. The former speedster added that Babar batted comfortably during the training sessions, boosting his chances of returning to the side at the Mecca of cricket.

Against the West Indies in the previous Test series, Babar top-scored with the bat, scoring 193 runs. Babar’s return will also see changes in the top order, as Azan Awais will likely make way for him, while either Abdullah Shafique or Shan Masood will move up the order. Not only will Babar assume captaincy, but he will also bat at his preferred position at number four. His numbers in England, however, are impressive as he averages over 65 in six innings, including three fifties. Against England overall in Tests, Babar averages 53.83 in 14 Tests.
Gul on Improving Performances
Pakistan was in shambles in the first Test, and despite Babar’s potential return, the side must learn from the mistakes and play better cricket to seek any chance of making a comeback in this Test series. "We'll have to learn from the mistakes we made in the previous game. If you want to win a Test match, you have to perform in all departments. One can't be carrying the other. But in these conditions, the responsibility lies more with the bowlers. Until you take 20 wickets, you can't win a Test match. "The players trained today with full intensity. I'm pretty sure the boys will bounce back properly here,” Gul added.

Prasidh Krishna and Manav Suthar have shared six wickets between them as India surge ahead of Sri Lanka despite rain on day three of the second Test in Colombo. Sri Lanka, trailing by 238 runs, had contributions from Pasindu Sooriyabandara (85) and Sonal Dinusha (80*) to help them stay afloat in this Test. Vaibhav Sooryavanshi failed with the bat on his return to red-ball cricket, and so did veteran quick Mohammed Shami, who went wicketless for the East Zone in the first quarterfinal. India batting coach Sitanshu Kotak has confirmed that Rishabh Pant will be fit to bat on Day 2 of the Colombo Test after the wicketkeeper-batter retired hurt on Sunday (Aug 23). Pant was hit on his left wrist by a short delivery from Lahiru Kumara during the 58th over, soon after the tea break. He tried to pull the ball but only managed to glove it and immediately looked in pain. The physio came onto the field and applied an ice pack before Pant walked off. Ravindra Jadeja then came out to bat in his place. Speaking at the press conference after the day’s play, Kotak eased India’s concerns by confirming that Pant would return to the crease. “Rishabh Pant will be fine to bat tomorrow,” Kotak said. The news is a major boost for India, with Pant expected to continue his innings when required on the second morning. India finished Day 1 on 300 for five after choosing to bat first following the toss. Devdutt Padikkal was the standout performer, scoring 117 off 193 balls for his second century of the series. Padikkal fell shortly before the second new ball, while Jadeja was dismissed for 43 off the final over of the day. Sri Lanka, meanwhile, will aim to take the remaining wickets quickly and stop India from posting a big first-innings total.

India batting coach Sitanshu Kotak confirmed that Rishabh Pant will be fit to bat on Day 2 after the wicketkeeper-batter retired hurt with a wrist injury.

Shubman Gill also scored a half-century as India recovered from early setbacks. Gill was dismissed shortly after reaching his fifty, while Padikkal continued to hold the innings together. India lost two more wickets in the final session. Padikkal fell shortly before the second new ball, while Jadeja was dismissed for 43 off the final over of the day. Dhruv Jurel was unbeaten on seven, with Saransh Jain on four at stumps. India will aim to score quickly on Day 2 and build a strong first-innings total, however, the increasing help for the spinners could make batting tougher. His ability to score quickly could prove useful, especially if the Sri Lankan bowlers begin to tire. For now, Jurel and Jain will look to add more runs before Pant returns to the crease. Sri Lanka, meanwhile, will aim to take the remaining wickets quickly and stop India from posting a big first-innings total.
