Harare, Zimbabwe
India batter Abhishek Sharma entered the history books for all the wrong reasons during his debut T20I match on Saturday (Jul 6) against Zimbabwe. Abhishek got out on a four-ball duck, becoming only the fourth India batter to do so.
Before Abhishek, MS Dhoni, KL Rahul and Prithvi Shaw were the Indian batters to get out on a duck on their T20I debut.
For Dhoni, the moment came in 2006 during the match against South Africa. The former India skipper was bowled by SA pacer Charles Langeveldt.
KL Rahul's duck came against Zimbabwe in 2016 while Shaw got out for a duck in his only T20I in 2021 against Sri Lanka. Both Rahul and Shaw had registered a golden duck - getting out on the first ball. Dhoni, on the other hand, was dismissed on the second ball while Abhishek registered a four-ball duck.
As for the match, Zimbabwe beat the T20 World Cup champions by 13 runs to take a 1-0 lead in the five-match series.
It is to be noted that this was India's first match after winning the T20 World Cup on June 29 and the retirement of Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli as well as Ravindra Jadeja.
Chasing a below-par total of 116, India's batters were no match against Zimbabwe's accurate bowling and were bowled out for 102 in 19.5 overs.
India's all three debutants Sharma, Dhruv Jurel and Riyan Parag failed to impress as the Shubman Gill-led side fell flat in the face of precise bowling.
Washington Sundar kept India's innings afloat with 27 runs off 34 but with 16 needed in the last over, he couldn't get the ball over the boundary.
For Zimbabwe, skipper Sikandar Raza finished with 3/25 while Chatara took 3/16. Apart from them, Brian Bennett, Wellington Masakadza, Blessing Muzarabani and Luke Jongwe chipped in with one wicket each.
