Davos 2026 | How Kerala is strengthening brand image with the motto ‘responsible Investment, responsible Industry’

India's higher education system has a significant gap in industry readiness, with nearly 75% of institutions failing to meet industry needs, according to TeamLease Edtech's report "From Degree Factories to Employability Hubs." Despite the growing national focus on job readiness, the report indicates that only 16.67% of institutions achieve placement rates of 76-100% within six months of graduation. The findings point towards a system-wide design challenge. Shantanu Rooj, Founder and CEO of TeamLease Edtech, noted that the report exposes a "clear gap between aspiration and execution," describing a system that remains "structurally underprepared to deliver the outcomes it aims to achieve." Curriculum relevance has been identified as the most significant structural constraint facing Indian HEIs. The data show that only 8.6% of institutions report full industry alignment across their programs, while over half (51.01%) report no alignment. This lack of synchronisation is compounded by low industry participation in the classroom. Only 7.56% of institutions have integrated "Professors of Practice" across multiple programs, leaving most students without sustained exposure to modern workplace requirements. Furthermore, more than 60% of institutions have not yet explored embedding recognised industry certifications into their academic offerings. The report suggests that for employability to move beyond being a mere "buzzword," curriculum co-creation with industry partners must become a fundamental requirement rather than an optional add-on. While experiential learning is widely considered essential for job readiness, the report finds that it currently “lacks structure and standardisation.” Adoption of mandatory practical training remains low. Internships are integrated across all programs in only 9.4% of institutions. 37.8% of institutions lack any internship integration. Only 9.68% of institutions utilise live industry projects to provide real-world experience. This lack of practical exposure means a large portion of students graduate without the "job-relevant skills" needed to navigate the employment market effectively. The report also highlights the failure of many institutions to leverage one of their most powerful assets: their alumni. While alumni are a critical bridge to industry, only 5.44% of institutions report having "highly engaged" alumni communities. For most, these relationships remain minimal or absent, significantly limiting students' access to mentorship, industry referrals, and informal hiring channels. To transform from "degree factories" into true "employability hubs," the report calls for a radical shift in how educational programs are built and delivered. The proposed roadmap emphasises making industry-aligned curricula, mandatory internships, and formal employer partnerships "non-negotiable" components of the education system. Disclaimer: This story has been published from a news agency feed with minimal edits to adhere to WION's style guide. The United States, as per reports, has completed its first sale of Venezuelan oil since the capture of the country's leader Nicolas Maduro. Talking to Semafor, a senior Donald Trump administration official said that the first sale of Venezuelan oil by the US is valued at about $500 million. The development comes following the capture of Nicolas Maduro, the former leader of the South American country 11 days ago. Following this, Trump said that US is taking control of Venezuela's oil reserves and recruit American companies to invest billions of dollars to refurbish the country's gutted oil industry, CNN had reported,. Trump had, on January 9 (local time) signed an executive order providing details on how his administration plans to block US courts or creditors from seizing any revenue that the US collects from Venezuelan oil and holds in American Treasury accounts. According to the Semafor report, revenue from the oil sales is currently being held in bank accounts controlled by the US government, as indicated in Friday's order, according to the administration official. The main account, according to a second senior administration official, is located in Qatar. "President Trump brokered a historic energy deal with Venezuela, immediately following the arrest of narcoterrorist Nicolas Maduro, that will benefit the American and Venezuelan people," White House spokeswoman Taylor Rogers said in a statement. "President Trump's team is facilitating positive, ongoing discussions with oil companies that are ready and willing to make unprecedented investments to restore Venezuela's oil infrastructure," she continued. Energy Secretary Chris Wright said the US government would oversee the sale of the oil and proceeds would be deposited into accounts controlled by Washington and Fox News has reported that additional sales are expected in the coming days and weeks. As per a CNN report Venezuela is sitting on a massive 303 billion barrels worth of crude -- about a fifth of the world's global reserves, according to the US Energy Information Administration (EIA). Trump previously said he plans to mobilize major U.S. oil companies to invest billions in fixing Venezuela's broken oil infrastructure. We are going to have our very large United States oil companies go in, spend billions of dollars, fix the badly broken oil infrastructure and start making money for the country," Trump said. Meanwhile, US President Trump said on Wednesday (local time) that he had a "long call" with Venezuela's interim president, Delcy Rodriguez. In a Truth Social post Trump said "This partnership between the United States of America and Venezuela will be a spectacular one FOR ALL. Venezuela will soon be great and prosperous again, perhaps more so than ever before!" he added. Rodriguez described the call as "long, productive and courteous" and said they discussed a bilateral agenda aimed at benefiting both countries. Rodriguez, who assumed the acting presidency after the January 3 capture of Maduro by US forces, described the call as conducted "within a framework of mutual respect," in which a bilateral work agenda for the benefit of both nations was addressed, according to her social media posts following the discussion. "I held a long and courteous telephone conversation with the President of the United States, Donald Trump, conducted within a framework of mutual respect, in which we addressed a bilateral work agenda for the benefit of our peoples, as well as pending matters between our governments," Rodriguez said in a post on X. After Maduro's capture, Trump said Washington would "run" Venezuela during a transition and needs "total access... to the oil and to other things in their country."

The US has quietly sold Venezuelan oil worth $500 million just days after Maduro’s capture, with revenues now held under Washington’s control.

The US State Department is temporarily pausing immigrant visa processing for applicants from 75 countries as it moves to tighten enforcement of laws aimed at preventing immigrants from becoming dependent on public assistance.According to an internal State Department memo obtained by Fox News Digital, consular officers have been instructed to deny visas under existing legal authority while the department reviews and updates its screening and vetting standards. The suspension is set to take effect on January 21 and will remain in place indefinitely until the review is completed. Countries affected by the pause include Somalia, Russia, Afghanistan, Brazil, Iran, Iraq, Egypt, Nigeria, Thailand, Yemen, and dozens of others. Somalia, in particular, has drawn increased attention following a major fraud investigation in Minnesota that uncovered widespread misuse of taxpayer-funded assistance programs. Amid global conflicts and turbulence, China quietly managed to achieve two records in 2025: a historic trade surplus nearing $1.2 trillion, and improved status as the world’s top automaker by both production and sales volume. The overall trade volume reached nearly $6.48–6.51 trillion, aided by manufacturing strength and strategic diversification of markets. These economic milestones indicate that China continues to dominate global production, even as it adapts its exports to changing market conditions caused by conflicts and trade wars. These feats were achieved in a tense environment that also involves its rivalries with the West over Taiwan and the South China Sea. Here is how China fared in 2025, based on the latest official data.
China posts largest annual trade surplus in its history
The Asian giant showed resilience in manufacturing and exports amid various challenges, including the tariff war unleashed by US President Donald Trump. It posted a record trade surplus of $1.189 trillion for the full year 2025, showed data from the country’s General Administration of Customs on Wednesday (Jan 14). This is the first time that the annual surplus exceeded $1 trillion, and breaks the previous record of around $992–993 billion in 2024 by about 20 per cent. China’s exports totalled around $3.77 trillion, up 5.5 per cent on year, while imports remained relatively flat at around $2.58 trillion. The surplus had crossed the $1 trillion mark by November 2025 already, and widened further in December, with the final month of 2025 alone showing a surplus of $114.14 billion. December saw exports grow 6.6 per cent year on year, while imports were also up 5.7 per cent year on year. Also read: China lauds India for surpassing Japan, becoming world's fourth largest economy
Chinese exporters pivoted aggressively to non-US markets
Trade ressures mainly from the US led Chinese exporters to aggressively seek out new markets in the European Union, ASEAN countries in Southeast Asia, Africa, and Latin America. A surge in exports to these regions helped offset declines in shipments to the US. China managed to post monthly trade surpluses exceeding $100 billion at least seven times in 2025, compared to just once in 2024. https://www.wionews.com/videos/byd-overtakes-tesla-as-the-top-ev-maker-in-2025-1767417674001/embed
China retains and improves top automaker status on the back of electric vehicles
This is the 17th straight year in which China ranked top in global auto production and sales. China has held the status of the world’s top auto exporter since 2023. According to China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM) data, vehicle production in China reached 34.53 million units in 2025, a growth of 10.4 per cent year on year. Vehicle sales hit 34.4 million units, up 9.4 per cent year on year. More than 16 million such units were manufactured and sold in 2025, accounting for more than 50 per cent of the total market. China has made history with a record $1.2 trillion trade surplus in 2025. It also retained and improved its position as the world’s top automaker. Both these feats were achieved amid headwinds of tariffs and trade wars with the US. Just how did China manage this?

China posts largest annual trade surplus in its history The Asian giant showed resilience in manufacturing and exports amid various challenges, including the tariff war unleashed by US President Donald Trump. After the divorce between Bill Gates and Melinda French Gates, assets worth nearly $8 billion were transferred as part of their settlement. AI has redefined how recruiters measure talent, and what defines hiring success. Amidst the volume of applications, hiring time is becoming critical alongside talent quality – making it imperative to balance speed, skills, and ROI. As a result, recruiters are leaning on data technology and AI for ground-level assessments, spending more time on evaluating value than filtering through volume. With 52% of recruiters in India prioritising smarter hiring technology, AI is turning recruiters into the ultimate filter for talent signal and business fit. In the first episode of Zee Media’s special series, ‘Beyond AI, CVs & JDs’ with LinkedIn, Ruchee Anand, Head of LinkedIn Talent & Learning Solutions, India, and Sanjeev Jain, Chief Operating Officer of Wipro, discuss how AI is rewriting recruiters’ priorities, reshaping success metrics, and helping them evolve into strategic talent advisors.
Hiring faster = good. Hiring smarter = better. Hiring with business intent = critical
Today’s recruiters are operating with a very different mandate. According to data by LinkedIn, the top priorities for Indian recruiters are finding high-quality candidates with transferable skills (52%), adopting smarter hiring technology (52%) and in tandem, proving the ROI of hiring investments to C-suite leaders (46%). With rising demand for speed, quality and accuracy, more recruiters are relying on AI-powered tools across stages of the hiring process. From screening and assessments to personalised outreach, AI is supporting all stages of hiring, but value depends on judgment, governance, and role clarity.

Hiring with business intent = critical Today’s recruiters are operating with a very different mandate. According to data by LinkedIn, the top priorities for Indian recruiters are finding high-quality candidates with transferable skills (52%), adopting smarter hiring technology (52%) and in tandem, proving the ROI of hiring investments to C-suite leaders (46%). This shift reflects a broader move away from transactional hiring towards business-linked outcomes. During the episode, Anand captures this evolution clearly. Smarter hiring, bigger impact: why recruiters are becoming business-critical

United States President Donald Trump on Friday (Jan 10) said that his administration will no longer let the American public be "ripped off" by credit card companies that charge 20 to 30 per cent interest rates. This, as per the institute, translates to "14.3 million individuals and families".
Possible ways banks might respond to the interest rate cap
As per BPI, there are a number of steps banks might take to safeguard themselves.- They could deny credit lines to people with bad credit scores.- Banks could reduce credit limits and raise the minimum payment required.- They could seek to reduce costs by engaging in less marketing and promotional activity, "including by eliminating or curtailing zero-interest or low-rate promotional offers".- For consumers whose pre-existing rates exceed the cap only marginally, banks might reduce interest rates to comply with the cap. Nevertheless, Banks' willingness depends on their credit card activities' current profitability.
Can Trump implement this unilaterally without the US Congress?
Trump did not outline how the cap would be implemented or whether it would require congressional approval. Still, he argued that the intent was clear. US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick has blamed the collapse of a proposed India–US trade deal on Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. While appearing on a podcast, Donald Trump's commerce secretary said that the trade deal did not materialise because Modi never made a personal call to the POTUS.
Modi to blame for India-US trade deal failure?
Speaking on the All In Podcast, Lutnick said the agreement was essentially ready but stalled because the final political outreach never happened. "I set the deal up," he said, adding that he had asked Indian officials to get Modi to call Trump, but "They (India) were uncomfortable with it. On that assumption, the US pushed ahead with negotiations with other nations at higher rates. "So now the problem is the deals came out at a higher rate and then India calls back it says oh, 'okay, We're ready,' I said ready for what?" Lutnick said.
What now?
Lutnick said that the US has now "stepped back from that trade deal that we had agreed to earlier. We are not thinking about it anymore."The US Commerce secretary's comments come on the heels of a bipartisan Russia sanctions bill approved by Trump on Wednesday (Jan 7) that targets countries buying Russian oil. The legislation, penned by senators Lindsey Graham and Richard Blumenthal, authorises tariffs of up to 500 per cent on imports from countries like India. Also read | 'PM Modi is not happy with me over tariffs,' says Trump, but assures strong tiesExplicitly naming India, China and Brazil, Lutnick said that the bill would give Trump "tremendous leverage" to incentivise these nations to stop buying the cheap Russian oil that "provides the financing for Putin's bloodbath against Ukraine".Recently, while speaking to reporters, Trump said Modi knew he (POTUS) was unhappy with India's oil imports from Russia and warned tariffs could be raised "very quickly." Trade talks between the two nations fell apart in 2025, when Trump doubled tariffs on Indian goods to 50 per cent, the highest rate imposed on any major economy. That included a 25 per cent retaliatory levy tied directly to India's continued purchases of Russian oil.

US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick says an India-US trade deal collapsed because PM Narendra Modi never personally called President Donald Trump. The deal, once ready, fell apart as Washington moved on, he claimed. Watch what he said here.

So, Modi didn't call." According to Lutnick, Washington had assumed India would be among the first countries to wrap up a trade agreement under Trump's second term. On that assumption, the US pushed ahead with negotiations with other nations at higher rates. Deals with Indonesia, the Philippines and Vietnam were concluded first, and at tariff levels that later complicated talks with New Delhi. He added that the conditions India believed were still on offer were no longer valid. AI is quietly rewriting organisational processes from inside-out. Not through loud disruptions, but through profound structural changes that influence how companies operate, innovate and grow. Recruiters are taking AI beyond isolated use cases to embed it as a strategic undercurrent that is prompting foundational shifts – job roles are now seen as a set of skills instead of a set of tasks, internal mobility is now a core talent strategy, and recruiters are no longer just hirers, they’re strategic career advisors. In the first episode of Zee Media’s special series, ‘Beyond AI, CVs & JDs’ with LinkedIn, Ruchee Anand, Head, LinkedIn Talent & Learning Solutions, India, and Sanjeev Jain, Chief Operating Office, Wipro, discussed how AI is ushering a new era of organisational functioning – one that is smarter, more connected, and collaborative.
AI’s impact isn’t merely operational – it’s structural
AI is reshaping the foundation of organisational planning, decision-making, and capability building. From hiring to performance, AI is influencing every layer of the enterprise. LinkedIn data shows that 52% of recruiters prioritise adopting AI tools, and nearly half of companies in India have increased their investment in hiring technology. Anand describes this evolution as a shift from “hype to handbook”, emphasising that AI is now an everyday tool being implemented across core business functions.
Embedding AI across the value chain
AI is now deeply embedded in organisational processes, reshaping how companies operate, serve clients, and create value. As Jain explains, when intelligence is woven into everyday workflows, teams operate with greater speed and confidence. This reinforces why skills-first role design and continuous internal capability building are critical to enhancing collective efficiency across organisations.
The future of work is connected
The move toward an AI-enabled workplace is paving the way to a future of work that Anand sums up as ‘connected’. As she frames it, a connected workplace is one where skills, learning, and mobility move hand-in-hand with growth, making talent development more intentional than urgent. AI plays a critical role here – by levelling capability across teams and helping organisations deploy talent where it creates the most value.Jain shared how Wipro is already living this reality. With a global workforce of over 2.3 lakh employees across 60 countries, the company uses an AI-driven internal assistant called WeNow that resolves more than 100,000 employee queries every week. This is not just operational convenience, it is cultural infrastructure. AI is becoming the connective tissue that helps employees work seamlessly across borders and time zones.
AI is leveling the playing field for SMBs
While large enterprises like Wipro are leading this adoption race, SMBs are quickly closing this gap. LinkedIn data shows that 9 in 10 SMBs (96%) are already investing in or planning for AI adoption, signalling a decisive shift from experimentation to building AI into the core of their operations. AI is also transforming how small firms build organisational strength – by compressing the gap in how they source, assess, and onboard talent, with skills and digital fluency becoming more valuable than conventional credentials.
For India’s workforce, skills continue to be the biggest advantage
For Indian professionals, AI’s adoption at scale across industries creates a greater need for upskilling. India Inc. is already leaning in. As Anand notes, India has one of the highest AI skills penetration rates globally, with professionals spending twice as much time learning as compared to their global average. To turn India’s demographic dividend into a global force to reckon with, professionals must stay curious, update their skillsets, and embrace continuous learning to stay future-ready.Watch the first episode of Beyond AI, CVs & JDs here:
<oembed url="https://youtu.be/7bXkG4WxB3U?si=z4CJbPJ3YpcI2zmX"></oembed>
(This article is from the Brand Desk.
