It was bad being famous: Sharon Stone

In an interview with InStyle, Sharon Stone remembered it was bad being that famous at that time. It was so wild, she remembers, that the police had to force her to hide during the infamous 1994 OJ Simpson car chase.

In the interview, she revealed that at the time, the Los Angeles Police Department “dispatched a squad to find Stone at home and tell her she had 10 minutes to pack a suitcase” amid the car chase because “she was being moved to a hotel for her own protection".

One LAPD officer told her at the time that “he’s dangerous”, “and we don’t know how dangerous, and we don’t know what this is".

“While OJ was driving up and down the fucking freeway,” she was moved into a hotel where one officer stood near reception and another kept watch at her door to make sure OJ Simpson would not target her.

You’d think that all this happened because Stone had some connection with Simpson but there was none. But since her life was so chaotic because of Basic Instinct, she didn’t even question the police why she should go into hiding. “The police were like, ‘Find a secure house behind a gate,’” Stone remembered.

Things have changed for stars now: Stone

On being asked about how things have changed since then and what do people expect from stars, Stone said, “At least now [people] understand that Jennifer Lawrence can’t just skip onto an aeroplane.
Fertility health is a crucial aspect of overall well-being. It influences individuals and couples as they navigate towards parenthood. Therefore, it is significant to understand the truth about fertility to make informed choices and adopt lifestyle practices that can support reproductive health.

We spoke to experts in their field, gynaecologists Dr Hima Deepthi of Nova IVF Fertility, Hyderabad, Dr Prabha Agrawal of CARE Hospitals, Hyderabad and Dr Manisha Singh, Fortis Hospital, Bangalore for ways to keep fertility health in check:

1. Effort and infertility: The idea that "trying too hard" to conceive leads to infertility lacks evidence. Despite suggestions to ease efforts, actively trying to get pregnant often involves fertility awareness methods, increasing the likelihood of timed intercourse during peak fertility. Far from hindering conception, dedication to planning a family may enhance the chances of pregnancy and fertility health.

2. Caffeine does not affect fertility health: It’s not quite sure if quitting caffeine can aid in pregnancy. According to some studies, caffeine does not affect your fertility health and ability to conceive. However, at the same time, it is necessary to ensure that the intake does not exceed more than 300mg per day.

3. Embracing parenthood after 40: While fertility risks increase after 40, the possibility of getting pregnant remains. Dispelling the notion of sterility post-40. Individuals should be aware of potential challenges, increased risks, and the potential for longer conception timelines.

4. Weight affects fertility: Maintaining a healthy weight is essential for fertility. Both underweight and overweight individuals face challenges when trying to conceive. Obesity can lead to hormonal imbalances and irregular menstrual cycles causing problems like PCOS and more. On the other hand, being underweight can result in ovulatory dysfunction. Thereby, maintain a healthy weight through balanced nutrition and regular exercise to positively impact fertility.

5. Smoking and alcohol can harm fertility: Smoking and excessive alcohol consumption can foster fertility issues in both men and women. Smoking can damage reproductive organs, decrease sperm count, and increase the risk of miscarriage. Similarly, excessive alcohol intake can disrupt hormonal balance and impair reproductive function. Quitting smoking and moderating alcohol consumption is necessary to maintain fertility health.

All of which are crucial for reproductive health. A minimum of 30 minutes of exercise is required daily to maintain a healthy weight.

7. Birth control does not cause infertility: Contrary to belief, hormonal birth control, when used correctly, doesn’t induce infertility. After discontinuation, some women may notice changes in their menstrual cycles. It happens as the body is readjusting after the artificial regularity created by hormonal contraceptives. However, the effects of the medication can last much longer than a month. While some women can conceive within 10 months, others may take two years.

8. Lifestyle matters: A person's lifestyle plays a crucial role in fertility. Factors such as diet, exercise, and stress levels can impact reproductive health. A balanced and nutritious diet contributes to overall well-being, while regular exercise helps maintain a healthy weight, reducing the risk of fertility-related issues. On the other hand, excessive stress can disrupt hormonal balance and negatively affect reproductive function. Adopting a healthy lifestyle can enhance fertility and support a successful conception.

9. STI can affect fertility: For both men and women, STI can affect fertility. In women, chlamydia and gonorrhoea can damage women’s fallopian tubes, making it harder to get pregnant and increasing the risk of ectopic pregnancy. Furthermore, it can lead to pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) in women. In men, STIs can lead to inflammation of the reproductive organs, affecting sperm production and quality. Safe sexual practices and regular STI screening are crucial for maintaining reproductive health.

10. Nutrition is crucial: A balanced diet rich in vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants is essential for reproductive health. Nutrient deficiencies can impact fertility in both men and women.

Emotional well-being is essential when navigating fertility challenges. Dealing with infertility can be emotionally taxing, and seeking support from counsellors or support groups can help individuals cope with stress and anxiety.

The doctors suggest seeking timely intervention from experts for couples experiencing difficulty conceiving. They suggest that if conception doesn't occur within a year of trying (or six months for women over 35), consulting with a fertility specialist can help identify underlying issues and explore treatment options.

Powerhouse Hollywood duo Russell Crowe and Liam Hemsworth are set to throng the theatres with their latest film which has everything you’d look for in an action flick. High on adrenaline, authentic feel of jets and artillery in addition to a stellar cast, Land of Bad is up for its theatrical release on February 16. Directed by William Eubank, the film stars Liam Hemsworth, Russell Crowe, Luke Hemsworth, Ricky Whittle, and Milo Ventimiglia in pivotal roles.

WION got talking to Land of Bad director William Eubank in an exclusive quick chat about bringing together such a fantastic cast, weaving realism in fiction and witnessing real bombs being dropped during their research for the film.

Land of Bad is an action-packed film that promises to take audiences on a wild ride through a covert Special Forces operation in the South Philippines. As the story unfolds, viewers are thrust into a brutal 48-hour battle for survival where every move could mean the difference between life and death.

Land of Bad: The Plot

In the film, rookie officer Kinney, portrayed by Liam Hemsworth, finds himself outnumbered and facing insurmountable odds after his elite extraction team is ambushed deep in enemy territory. With time running out and an air strike looming, Kinney must rely on the guidance of Air Force drone pilot Reaper, played by the legendary Russell Crowe, to navigate the treacherous landscape and ensure the survival of his team.

While the film may not be based on a true story, realism was imperative for director-writer William Eubank and co-writer Chris Frigerio. “We started out going to Fort Irwin, which is a national training base in between Las Vegas and Los Angeles. I had a JTAC call me out of the blue when some press came out about this movie and I headed out there.” (A JTAC is a term used in the United States Armed Forces for a qualified service member who directs the action of military aircraft engaged in close air support and other offensive air operations).

Realism in Fiction

It all became too real for Eubank as he remembered, “We watched real bombs being dropped. I mean the Air Force was really kind to let us sort of peer over the shoulder and into the world of what an actual JTAC and what these drone operators really do. So, we saw a lot of exciting things and, and we're actually on the ground for a lot of exciting things. That all led of course to trying to create as realistic and as authentic a story as possible.”

Russell Simmons finds himself embroiled in a #MeToo controversy as a former music video producer has sued him for allegedly raping her as they worked together for Def Jam Recordings in the late 1990s.

Woman accuses Russell Simmons of alleged rape

The woman kept herself anonymous and referred to herself as Jane Doe. She alleged that Russell Simmons called her to his apartment in Manhattan to get a rough cut of a video checked. When she reached there, she alleges that he made a “wrestling move,” pinned her down on his bed, and proceeded to rape her.

The lawsuit states: “Ms. Doe rejected his advances and told him to ‘get off’ and ‘stop’ several times. She told him she was ‘serious’ and she ‘meant it.’ But Ms. Doe was forcefully pinned, could not move under his weight and Mr. Simmons would not listen to her.”

Not the first time that his name has cropped up in #MeToo

Russell Simmons’ name had earlier cropped up when Hollywood was stormed with a wave of #MeToo allegations in 2017, including those levelled against Harvey Weinstein. After multiple women came forward with allegations against him, he was forced to step down from his roles at Def Jam and his yoga lifestyle brand. The multiple sexual assault allegations even got a documentary treatment in 2020 with On the Record.

The latest lawsuit claims that Jane Doe saw a familiar pattern and couldn't control herself from revealing what happened to her at the hands of Simmons.

“When Ms. Doe learned about the accounts of the other survivors, she was struck by how similar they were to her own horrible experience at the hands of Mr. Simmons,” the complaint states.

The suit alleges that leading up to the assault, Simmons would also sexually harass the plaintiff in her office at work, shutting the door behind him, leaning over her and making sexual innuendos.

The suit alleges that she was “forever changed” by the assault, that she suffered from dissociation, depression and anxiety, and that she turned in her notice at Def Jam shortly afterwards. She also suffered panic attacks, developed an eating disorder, and had difficulty dealing with heightened emotions in work settings.

What triggered Jane Doe to file suit after all these years?

All past things came as a rude shock to her when in March 2023, she went to a yoga class and found herself next to Simmons. According to the suit, she was taken aback when he said her name, and she asked if it was okay to practice next to him. He responded: “Of course. What, do you think I’m gonna try and fuck you?” the lawsuit states.

“Ms. Doe was horrified. She realised not only was he unapologetic towards her personally, he did not appreciate that the assault was wrong,” the complaint further states.

Previously, Jennifer Jarosik filed a rape lawsuit against Simmons in January 2018. That complaint was dropped a few months later. Another accuser, identified only as Jane Doe, sued Simmons in Los Angeles in March 2018. A judge threw that case out in 2020 because the allegation was barred by the statute of limitations.

Russell Simmons new lawsuit: Music producer claims he raped her in 1990s

Hollywood actress Selma Blair is regretful of her statement on Islam in a video regarding the Israel-Hamas war last week. In a comment that has since been deleted, Selma had equated Muslims with Hamas and labelled the religion wrong and responsible for all the violence. She has since apologised and taken it down following a lengthy statement to undo the hurt caused by her ill-informed statement.

Selma apologises for anti-Islam comment

In a statement shared on Instagram, Selma Blair wrote, “This is a time of great pain and anguish for many around the world, but it is also a time to learn and better understand how words matter. I commented on a post by Abraham Hamra regarding two congress members who are against banning October 7th Hamas terrorists from entering the USA. In my comment, I mistakenly and inadvertently conflated Muslims with Radical Islamists and fundamentalists, a terrible error in my words, and resulted in hurting countless people I never meant to, and I deeply regret this. As soon as my error was brought to my attention, I deleted the comment.”

“Hate and misinformation are amplified so easily these days,” Blair continued. “This time by my own hands. In this instance, I erred in my writing and I fully recognize how I contributed to the Muslim community being understandably very upset. I respect and love all peace-loving communities, all over the world. It was my Muslim friends who helped educate and show me the way. I am committed to paying forward their love and understanding. We cannot allow ignorance and rage to become our downfall.”

Selma was slammed on the internet after she commented on a video posted by a user profile named Abraham Hamra. In the clip, Hamra appeared to be speaking out in defence of the Jewish community months after the October 7 Hamas terrorist attacks. As a comment to that video, she wrote, “Thank you so much. Deport all these terrorist supporting goons. Islam has destroyed Muslim countries and then they come here and destroyed minds. They know they are liars. Twisted justifications. May they meet their fate.”

Among the first who criticised the Cruel Intentions actress, were filmmaker James Lebrecht and the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR). James wrote, “I haven’t said anything about the Selma Blair situation up to this point. I was hoping that I would have a more eloquent statement than the following. I am heartbroken after seeing what she has posted online. I barely know how to use Instagram and don’t follow anyone daily.”

He added, “All of this took me completely by surprise. I want to be as clear as I can possibly be. I want to see a cease-fire immediately. I want the hostages freed immediately. I hate the Israeli government for what they have done. I deplore the killing of innocent people anywhere. Be precise, I deplore all killing.”

Deport all these terrorist supporting goons. Islam has destroyed Muslim countries and then they come here and destroyed minds. They know they are liars. Twisted justifications. May they meet their fate.” Among the first who criticised the Cruel Intentions actress, were filmmaker James Lebrecht and the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR). James wrote, “I haven’t said anything about the Selma Blair situation up to this point. I was hoping that I would have a more eloquent statement than the following. I am heartbroken after seeing what she has posted online. I barely know how to use Instagram and don’t follow anyone daily.” Also read: Shah Rukh Khan denies any role in the release of 8 Naval veterans from Qatar, hails ‘very able’ leaders He added, “All of this took me completely by surprise. I want to be as clear as I can possibly be. I want to see a cease-fire immediately. I want the hostages freed immediately. I hate the Israeli government for what they have done. I deplore the killing of innocent people anywhere. Be precise, I deplore all killing.”
