The Producers Guild of India (PGI) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the state of New Jersey in an effort to facilitate the shooting of Indian films in New Jersey.

The MoU was signed between PGI, Choose New Jersey, and the New Jersey Economic Development Authority during Choose New Jersey’s economic mission to India in December. The MoU opens communication channels for idea sharing and information on best practices for film production and promotion.&nbsp;&nbsp;

“There has been a quantum increase in the number of Indian productions filming internationally,” said Shibasish Sarkar, President of the Producers Guild of India. “Traditionally, international shoots were restricted to a handful of destinations and were almost exclusively the domain of a very few mega-budget productions. However, today’s Indian filmmaker is not averse to shooting pretty much anywhere in the world, irrespective of the scale of their productions. New Jersey is an attractive destination for Indian films for a host of reasons, and we look forward to working closely with our counterparts in New Jersey to realize the immense potential for collaboration.”

New Jersey promises to offer a pro-film environment with cooperative counties and municipalities, an extensive transportation system, and a huge&nbsp;variety of locations and landscapes.&nbsp;

“Throughout his tenure, Governor Phil Murphy has fostered an engaging relationship with India, solidifying New Jersey as a top destination for Indian business investment,” said Tim Sullivan, Chief Executive Officer of the New Jersey Economic Development Authority. “New Jersey’s film sector has exploded over recent years, leading to major productions setting up shop in the state and record-breaking spending. We are thrilled to welcome India’s film industry, which will expand film production in the state, create jobs, and generate greater economic activity.”

Television and theatre actor Gulki Joshi, who is a part of Zee Theatre's teleplays Kaalchakra and Purush reacts to the trend of multilingual teleplays and content on the big and small screen and says, "It's high time every language got its due. There are so many states with so many different languages which are unfortunately fading out. Even Hindi is not properly spoken by the new generation and it is important to keep our languages alive."

While her mother tongue is Marathi, She also acknowledges even though her mother tongue is Marathi, she has received education in an English medium school. She says, "My Marathi is not that great. At college, during the semi-finals of a play competition, I goofed up badly in Marathi grammar and mixed up the genders in such a way that the judges and audience were laughing at me. When we were disqualified, I realised I should have paid more attention to my Marathi."

Performing in various languages on stage has made her appreciate India's linguistic diversity even more and she says, "Each language comes with its specific tonality and culture, the story of its origin, the people who are associated with it, and a lot more. <h2>Gopal Datt: 'There is no language barrier when stories are translated'</h2>

TV actor Gopal Datt who is part of Zee Theatre's anthology Koi Baat Chale also welcomes the trend of multilingual stories and says, "Only in our country do so many languages exist together and each one has its literature that must be shared with people at large. For instance, when you hear stories from Kerala or Bihar, you get to experience the specificities of the regions as well. Without multilingual platforms, we might miss out on a huge part of the literature as they allow us to watch stories in our preferred language, as well as content in other languages."&nbsp;

He also points out that Malayalam cinema has gained popularity all over India due to multilingual platforms and says that theatre too does its bit to introduce people to various literary styles.

Adding that exposure to different languages also fosters a sense of unity and inclusivity among the audience, he says, "The plays of Vijay Tendulkar and Girish Karnad are performed all over India and there is no language barrier when stories are translated. So I think theatre has always brought people together and will do so in the future too."

<h2>Shilpa Shukla: 'Multilingual platforms have expanded content choices'&nbsp;</h2>

Actor Shilpa Shukla who stars in Zee Theatre's teleplay The Big Fat City believes the trend of multilingual stories has made way for richer content as well. She says, "For audiences who want real substance, multilingual platforms have expanded content choices and now audiences are watching international and regional stories including those from South India as well."

Theatre, according to her, also offers a social commentary and it is even more enriching when audiences can access it in different languages. As she says, "When we watch theatre from all across India, that is when we come to realise the uniqueness and universality of the issues they raise."

Vikrant Massey recently apologised for an old tweet featuring a cartoon of Lord Ram and Goddess Sita. The 12th Fail actor apologised for a 2018 post as people started digging through his social media and stumbled upon the said post, calling it “hurtful” and “obscene”. In the post, Sita’s cartoon can be seen commenting on Ram Bhakts.&nbsp;

After he came under fire for the post, Vikrant deleted the tweet and apologised saying, “In context to one of my tweets way back in 2018, I’d like to say a few words: It was never my intention to hurt, malign or disrespect the Hindu community. But as I reflect in hindsight about a tweet made in jest, I also release (realise) the distasteful nature of it. The same could have been said without adding the cartoon which was published in a newspaper.”

<h2>Mother is a Sikh, father a Christian and brother a Muslim</h2>

Vikrant and conversations around religion have been a topic of debate ever since he mentioned how secular and open-minded his family is when it comes to perceiving religion and spirituality. The award-winning actor recently opened up about his elder brother Moeen. In an interview, he shared that Moeen converted to Islam at the age of 17. Vikrant comes from a family of Christians and Sikhs, with his&nbsp;father being a practising Christian who goes to church while his mother is a Sikh.&nbsp;

He said, “My brother’s name is Moeen, I am called Vikrant. You’d wonder why the name Moeen. He converted to Islam, my family let him change his religion. They said, ‘Beta (Son), if you find satisfaction in this, then go ahead.’ He converted at the age of 17, it is a big step. My mother is Sikhni, my father is a church-going Christian, he goes to church twice a week. From a young age, I have seen a lot of arguments related to religion and spirituality.”

On how his family deals with questions of religion, he said, “My father was questioned by my extended relatives about how he could ‘allow’ that (brother’s conversion). He said that was none of their business. ‘He is my son, he is only answerable to me and has all the rights to choose what he wants.’ After seeing this, I went on my own quest, wondering what exactly is religion. It is man-made.”

Regina King as Shirley Chisholm is set to play the first Black woman elected to the United States Congress. The Netflix biopic will chronicle her trailblazing 1972 presidential campaign and the first woman to run for the Democratic Party’s presidential nomination. Her boundary-breaking campaign was marked by its youth engagement as she tried to gain enough delegates to speak at that year’s Democratic National Convention.

The movie is written and directed by John Ridley, who won an Oscar for penning 12 Years a Slave.

Regina King said in a statement, “Shirley Chisholm’s fearless determination has been an inspiration to so many of us, and with this film we hope to inspire many generations to come. To collaborate once again with my friend and mentor, John Ridley, and the team at Participant, makes this decade-long journey even sweeter.”

A Netflix drama documentary about Alexander the Great has come under fire for depicting “extremely poor-quality fiction” with Greece's minister for culture calling it “low content, rife with historical inaccuracies". The documentary is called Alexander: The Making of a God.&nbsp;

Minister of Culture of Greece, Lina Mendoni made these comments amid a raging debate over the show’s depiction of a romantic relationship between Alexander the Great and his confidant and friend Hephaestion.

<h2>The show is a distortion of truth, say Greek politicians&nbsp;</h2>

Local media in Greece and movie buffs have been calling the show “a distortion of the truth” and blamed Oliver Stone’s 2004 film Alexander for starting “a propaganda campaign about Alexander’s homosexuality”. They have been blaming the 2004 film for the narrative of Alexander being “gay”.&nbsp;

<img alt="Greek film" data-entity-type="file" data-entity-uuid="09602756-2d64-43f7-8f3a-f7d328fb883f" src="//cdn.wionews.com/sites/default/files/inline-images/HORIZONS%20-%202024-02-20T134754.026.jpg" />

The documentary also became a topic of discussion in the Greek parliament. Lina Mendoni said it was “replete with historical inaccuracies, demonstrates the director’s sloppiness and poverty of scenario”.

On the show’s depiction of the relationship between Alexander and Hephaestion, Mendoni said, “There is no mention in the sources that it goes beyond the limits of friendship, as defined by Aristotle. But you will know that the concept of love in antiquity is broad and multidimensional. We cannot interpret either practices or persons who acted 2,300 years ago by our own measures, our own norms and assumptions. Alexander the Great, for 2,300 years, has never needed, nor does he need now, the intervention of any unsolicited protector of his historical memory or, even more, of his personality and moral standing.”

<h2>Government won't take any action against the makers</h2>

The government, however, doesn’t plan on taking any action against the documentary. Mendoni said it would be unconstitutional. Greece’s constitution has protected freedom of art since the early 19th century.

Mendoni said, “The ministry of culture does not exercise censorship, does not carry out actions that result in prosecution or ban, does not manipulate, does not limit, does not control the dissemination of information and ideas neither preventively nor repressively.”

“The inspiration of artists, personal interpretation, and the judgement of individuals cannot, evidently, be subjected to a regulatory regime and control, nor can it be governed by the courts or dragged into them. Instead, it is assessed and judged by each of us, by the international community. This is how Netflix is also evaluated.”

The nature of the relationship between the Macedonian king and his general has long been speculated. It is widely known that Alexander and Hephaestion were intimate friends from childhood.&nbsp;

A similar controversy erupted when&nbsp;the Egyptian antiquities ministry published a lengthy statement criticising Netflix’s decision to cast a Black actor as Cleopatra in the drama-documentary Queen Cleopatra.
