BAFTA 2024 concluded with the biggest win for Oppenheimer director Christopher Nolan, who is possibly the British film industry’s most celebrated and successful filmmaker of the century. He won his first Best Director BAFTA for Oppenheimer, a biopic on the father of the atomic bomb. The film showed his struggles as he dealt with his conscience after his invention led to the death of millions. The film was also named Best Picture.

Oppenheimer wins big

Christopher Nolan broke his jinx this year as he had previously been nominated for eight BAFTAs but barring an honourary award in 2010, had never won an award. Oppenheimer dominated most parts of the BAFTAs as it took home seven wins, including Best Actor for Cillian Murphy and Supporting Actor for Robert Downey Jr.

While Oppenheimer picked up seven wins, the BAFTAs were shared more widely as Yorgos Lanthimos’s Poor Things starring Emma Stone took five awards, including Best Actress. In her speech, Emma Stone thanked her mother, “because she’s the best person in the world. Without her, none of this would exist, including my life. So thank you, mom!”

Jonathan Glazer’s The Zone of Interest took three awards – Best Sound, Outstanding British Film and Best Film Not in the English Language. Speaking about the film’s message, producer James Wilson brought up the issue of the perils of selective empathy. A friend had recently written to him, he said, explaining that they “couldn’t stop thinking about the walls we construct in our lives which we choose not to look behind”.

Among those that didn’t find a mention at the BAFTAs was The Holdovers. While the film’s lead actor Paul Giamatti missed the big win, it picked the casting award for Susan Shopmaker and Supporting Actress for Da’Vine Joy Randolph.

Other than the hits and misses, a Stop the War Coalition poster with the message "Gaza: Stop the Massacre" was put up on the red carpet by Ken Loach and The Old Oak filmmakers.

Deepika Padukone takes to BAFTA stage

There was also Bollywood representation at BAFTAs this year as Indian actress Deepika Padukone took to the BAFTA 2024 stage to present an award in the Film Not In The English Language category. The actress was named as a presenter at the BAFTAs earlier this month along with international celebrities like Cate Blanchett, David Beckham, Dua Lipa and others.

The BAFTA fellowship went to Samantha Morton, who dedicated her award to “every child in care today, or who has been in care, or who is suffering, or who didn’t survive”.

Meanwhile, Michael J Fox received a standing ovation as he came on the stage to present the award for best film. Feels good to be back: Jeremy Renner makes People’s Choice Awards appearance as presenter

The Parekh family known for their inimitable comedy style are back after a gap of 13 years – this time in the form of a film titled Khichdi 2- Mission Paanthukistan. Rajeev Mehta as Praful and Supriya Pathak Kapoor as Hansa led the comedy show to give it cult status, lending a new meaning to real-time comedy in Indian television.

What to expect from Khichdi 2

In their latest adventure, Mission Paanthukistan, the Parekh family are onto something new as an intelligence services agent discovers that Praful resembles the king of Paanthukistan, he enlists the help of the Parekh family to place Praful in the king's position and save his subjects. We find out whether they do justice to the new roles. Rajeev Mehta aka Praful spoke to WION about Khichdi 2, what’s new about Praful this time and his equation with everyone’s favourite, Hansa.

Rajeev has always been irreplaceable in the role as Praful – honest and full of conviction. Happy to be back, Rajeev said, “Returning to Khichdi 2 was a delightful experience for us. We've always been eager to delve back into the world of Khichdi, whether it's for a TV series, theatrical performance, or any other format. The opportunity to revisit the beloved characters and narratives filled us with joy and enthusiasm.”

On what Khichdi 2 has to offer its fans, Rajeev said, “It's a genuinely good comedy, devoid of forced humour, and crafted with pure comedic genius. Under the adept direction of Aatish Kapadia, the writing and performances are exceptional. Viewers will be treated to a different brand of comedy that has the power to uplift spirits, offering a respite from life's challenges and reminding us of the joy found in laughter.”

Praful and Hansa

In the film, Rajeev Mehta is seen playing a dual role. With one Praful difficult to handle for the Parekhs, they have a rollercoaster ride in this one. Talking about the experience, Rajeev said, “Alongside reprising the familiar Praful, I also portray the King of Paanthukistan, a character with distinct behavioural traits. This duality posed a unique challenge for me as an actor, requiring nuanced differences in acting style, body language, and demeanour. Audiences can see a fresh dimension to my performance.”

Khichdi 2 brings back the familiarity, the nostalgia and yet manages to thrill audiences with a new story. Rajeev added that the likes of Khichdi work because “family dramas, particularly those infused with comedy, have a timeless appeal that withstands the test of time. The comedy within these narratives feels organic and uncontrived, resonating with viewers across generations.”

Another thing that stands the test of time is Praful and Hansa’s equation which only gets better as they engage in playful banter. Rajeev’s equation with Supriya truly transforms on the screen as they play a naive couple who like to be in their own rhythm. “My dynamic with Hansa has evolved beautifully over time. We are regarded as one of the most beloved couples in television history. The enduring popularity of Khichdi is evident with characters like ours becoming cultural icons. Working alongside Hansa has been a joyous experience, and Aatish Kapadia's masterful writing has enabled us to effortlessly inhabit our characters,” commented Rajeev on his equation with actress Supriya Pathak Kapoor who plays his wife in the film.

Zendaya was the showstopper at the recently held Dune: Part Two premiere in London. The actress known for her unique sartorial style, turned up like an art herself as she chose to dress up in a chrome bodysuit pulled out from a 1995 Mugler Couture collection.

Zendaya looked like she came from the future

Befitting the occasion, the futuristic look suited her and how. Zendaya’s Mugler outfit featured shiny sleeves, gloves and pants set over clear plastic. She paired the outfit with a heavy diamond necklace.

The outfit was from the original Fall/Winter show which Vogue said “was memorable more for its performance by James Brown; its cameos by the likes of Tippi Hedren, Patty Hearst, and Veruschka; and its rather liberal use of fetishistic latex.” The collection was described as a “frightening and tantalising image for the dawn of the Internet age, and a fitting end for this list of the nineties’ most unforgettable fashion shows.”

As Zendaya debuted her most daring and futuristic look yet in a vintage 1995 Mugler robot suit, fans wondered how she’d sit or go about her business if she was to go to the bathroom. Many even wondered if it was comfortable from inside and if the dress had some sort of cotton lining so that it didn’t hurt her skin.

While Zendaya’s look stood out, others too looked like they were dressed to impress. Dune: Part Two stars Austin Butler and Florence Pugh alongside OG cast members Timothée Chalamet and Zendaya. The other stars who are a part of Dune 2 include Josh Brolin, Léa Seydoux, Rebecca Ferguson, Souheiler Yacoub, Stellan Skarsgård and Anya Taylor-Joy.

What to expect from Dune: Part Two

Dune: Part Two picks up where the first film left off in which Paul Atreides (Chalamet) finally reaches Chani (Zendaya) and joins forces with the Fremen to bring down the evil Harkonnens. It is an adaptation of Frank Herbert's 1965 novel of the same name. Dune was a massive hit. Ever since the film came out, Dune fans have waited for the second part which takes the story forward.

Meryl Streep is confirmed to return for season 4 of Only Murders in the Building. The three-time Oscar winner will reprise her role as Loretta Durkin, the love interest to Martin Short’s character Oliver Putnam.

Only Murders in the Building season 4 promises to be exciting than ever

Season 4 will take forward the story. For those who are unaware, season 3 ended with Meryl’s character getting an offer to work in Los Angeles. Hence, season 4 will begin with Martin Short, Steve Martin and Selena Gomez taking a trip to Los Angeles before the central action returns to its central location, The Arconia.

While Season 4 plot details are being kept as secret as a murder investigation, the Season 3 cliffhanger saw Charles-Haden Savage’s (Martin) longtime stunt double (Jane Lynch) being gunned down. Someone was out to kill Charles, but the question remains, who would want to kill him? Selena Gomez’s Mabel was a suspect in season 1 and this isn’t the first time the trio has gotten too close to a case, but the stakes are higher than ever.

Meryl Streep’s return confirmed

Meryl’s return was confirmed by 20th Television president Karey Burke whose studio produces Only Murders in the Building. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter’s podcast, Burke said, “Meryl is returning for next season because she had a tremendous time.”

Meryl Streep will join Molly Shannon in recurring roles in season four of the hit show.
