<p>The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT)- Bombay received a donation of $18.6 million (Rs 160 crore) from an alumnus who doesn’t want his identity to be revealed, a report revealed Friday (August 25).</p>

<p>The donation from the anonymous source came for the establishment of a Green Energy and Sustainability Research (GESR) Hub.</p>

<p>The donation has been hailed as a “rare occurrence” by IIT Bombay director Prof Subhasis Chaudhari. “This is a rare occurrence in Indian academia that a philanthropist wishes to stay anonymous,” Subhasis said.</p>

<p>He also added that it was the first time that the institution had received such an anonymous donation.</p>

<p>“It is the first time that we have received an anonymous donation. In fact, while this is common in the USA, I don't think any university in India has received a private gift where the donor wants to remain faceless. Donors know that when they give IIT-B money, it will be used efficiently and for the right purpose,” he added.</p>

<h2><strong>How will the money be used?</strong></h2>

<p>The funds allocated to the GESR Hub will support research in vital domains like solar photovoltaics, battery technologies, clean-air science, flood forecasting, and carbon capture.</p>

<p>“The establishment of this hub underscores our dedication to tackling climate challenges through cutting-edge research, fostering interdisciplinary collaborations, and nurturing entrepreneurial endeavours,” Prof Chaudhari stressed.</p>

<p>The institute also announced that the GESR hub will be situated within a modern academic facility on the IIT Bombay Campus in suburban Powai.</p>

<p>In addition, the research centre will offer industry-specific educational training and foster strategic partnerships with international universities and corporations.</p>

<h2><strong>Second such contribution from an alumnus</strong></h2>

<p>This marks the second contribution from an alumnus to IIT Bombay. Last month, Infosys co-founder Nandan Nilekani donated INR (315 crore) to the institution, marking his 50-year association with it. His total contributions to his alma mater now amount to Rs 400 crore. As a result of this generous donation, IIT Bombay named their main iconic building after Nilekani.</p>

The donation from the anonymous source came for the establishment of a Green Energy and Sustainability Research (GESR) Hub. The donation has been hailed as a “rare occurrence” by IIT Bombay director Prof Subhasis Chaudhari. “This is a rare occurrence in Indian academia that a philanthropist wishes to stay anonymous,” Subhasis said. He also added that it was the first time that the institution had received such an anonymous donation. “It is the first time that we have received an anonymous donation. In fact, while this is common in the USA, I don't think any university in India has received a private gift where the donor wants to remain faceless. Donors know that when they give IIT-B money, it will be used efficiently and for the right purpose,” he added. How will the money be used? The funds allocated to the GESR Hub will support research in vital domains like solar photovoltaics, battery technologies, clean-air science, flood forecasting, and carbon capture. “The establishment of this hub underscores our dedication to tackling climate challenges through cutting-edge research, fostering interdisciplinary collaborations, and nurturing entrepreneurial endeavours,” Prof Chaudhari stressed. The institute also announced that the GESR hub will be situated within a modern academic facility on the IIT Bombay Campus in suburban Powai. In addition, the research centre will offer industry-specific educational training and foster strategic partnerships with international universities and corporations. <p>The veterinarian initially looked into getting a blood transfusion from another peacock but to no avail. It was later found that Pete was actually shot twice before it died.</p>

<p>The local homeowners association has issued an email urging residents to review their surveillance camera footage, with hopes of identifying any video evidence that might help capture the person responsible for Pete's tragic demise.</p>

<p>Officials from Animal Protection Services are also looking into the peacock's fatal shooting.</p>

<p>Bhutan, the world’s first carbon-negative country, is slashing the tourist fee to boost its economy by attracting as many visitors as possible. It is all set to halve the $200 daily fee from September this year, in a bid to revive the country’s tourism sector still reeling after COVID-19.</p>

<p>Bhutan ended its Covid restrictions two years ago but introduced a tourist fee of $200 per visitor per night under its "Sustainable Development Fee" programme. It justified the increase by saying that the money would go to offset the carbon generated by visitors.</p>

<h2><strong>New tourist fee model in Bhutan</strong></h2>

<p>As reported by Reuters, the new rate of $100 per night would come into effect from September and last for four years.</p>

<p>A government statement issued Friday (August 25) said, “This is in view of the important role of the tourism sector in generating employment, earning foreign exchange ... and in boosting overall economic growth."</p>

<h2><strong>Bhutan’s long-term goals</strong></h2>

<p>Bhutan is working to completely overhaul its tourism sector. It wants to increase the contribution of tourism to its $3 billion economy to 20 per cent from the current 5 per cent.</p>

<p>Dorji Dhradhul, director general of the Department of Tourism, said the halving of the fee could boost arrivals in the September-December peak tourist period, which includes many religious and cultural events in the mainly Buddhist country.</p>

It justified the increase by saying that the money would go to offset the carbon generated by visitors. New tourist fee model in Bhutan As reported by Reuters, the new rate of $100 per night would come into effect from September and last for four years. A government statement issued Friday (August 25) said, “This is in view of the important role of the tourism sector in generating employment, earning foreign exchange ... and in boosting overall economic growth." Bhutan’s long-term goals Bhutan is working to completely overhaul its tourism sector. It wants to increase the contribution of tourism to its $3 billion economy to 20 per cent from the current 5 per cent. Dorji Dhradhul, director general of the Department of Tourism, said the halving of the fee could boost arrivals in the September-December peak tourist period, which includes many religious and cultural events in the mainly Buddhist country. According to Dhradhul, Bhutan has welcomed over 56,000 tourists since January. However, around 42,000 of them are Indian nationals, subject to a fee of just 1,200 Indian rupees ($14.5) per day. In an effort to protect the integrity of its mountains, Bhutan has refrained from permitting mountain climbing, underscoring its long-standing concern about the consequences of mass tourism. Consequently, the tourist fee has restricted the influx of visitors to those willing to spend more, thus forming only a small fraction of the volume seen in neighbouring Nepal. <h2><strong>Indian PM Modi on UNSC reforms</strong></h2>

<p>Earlier on August 23, PM Modi said in his speech that it was high time reforms were introduced at UNSC and multilateral organisations like the World Trade Organization (WTO).</p>

<p>“In his various interventions, Prime Minister highlighted the following: Called for setting defined timelines for UNSC reforms, Called for reform of Multilateral Financial Institutions and Called for reform of WTO,” a statement issued by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) read.</p>

<p>PM Modi in his statement also called on BRICS countries to support the African Union’s permanent membership of G20.</p>

<h2><strong>China’s stance</strong></h2>

<p>Chinese leader Xi Jinping earlier also supported the increased role of developing nations in global governance.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"It is necessary to elevate the representation and the voice of developing countries in the global governance and to support developing states in achievement of better results," the Chinese leader said.</p>
