As per a new study led by the researchers of the University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM), elementary school-aged children who get less than nine hours of sleep per night can have significant differences in brain regions responsible for memory, intelligence compared to those who get proper sleep of nine to twelve hours. The study was published in the Lancet Child and Adolescent Health journal. The variations were associated with severe mental health issues, such as depression, anxiety, and impulsive behaviour amongst those who get little sleep, ANI reported.

Lack of sleep has also been related to problems such as decision making, problem-solving, and memory. However, till now, no research has examined the long-term effects of inadequate sleep on pre-teens’ neurocognitive development.

For this story, the researchers analysed information gathered from more than 8,300 kids between the ages of 9 and 10 who participated in the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) study. This study, supported by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), is the largest long-term study for the investigation of child health and brain development in the US.

According to Ze Wang, PhD, Professor at UMSOM, "We found that children who had insufficient sleep, less than nine hours per night, at the beginning of the study, had less grey matter or smaller volume in certain areas of the brain responsible for attention, memory, and inhibition control compared to those with healthy sleep habits." He further added, "These differences persisted after two years, a concerning finding that suggests long-term harm for those who do not get enough sleep."

This is one of the first studies to show possible long-term effects of sleep deprivation on young children’s neurocognitive development.

Following the publication of the study, the American Academy of Sleep Medicine recommends that children aged 6 to 12 take the recommended sleep.

The American Academy of Paediatrics advised parents to instill healthy habits in their kids. They advised the parents to prioritise getting adequate sleep to maintain a regular sleep schedule, encourage good physical activity throughout the day, and restrict their screen time an hour before bed.

The world organisation adopted a press statement, submitted by India and France, on the recent killings of the three peacekeepers in Congo. The recent attacks on the UN’s MONUSCO in North Kivu, which resulted in the deaths of three peacekeepers and injuries to others, were strongly condemned by the Council’s members. They emphasised that this intentional attack on the individuals can be qualified as a war crime under international law, ANI reported. The Security Council members sent their sincere condolences to India and Morocco and the families of the victims. The council members also sent their sympathies to the UN and the victims, who were innocent bystanders. UNSC urges Congolese government to investigate the killing of three UN peacekeepers

A BJP youth functionary member was hacked by unidentified motorcycle-borne attackers on Wednesday (July 27), as per police, as unrest erupted in the town with the Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) calling for a bandh in several of the taluks to condemn the killing. Praveen Nettaru, a member of the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha district executive committee, was killed and the police are looking into several explanations including the involvement of attackers from the nearby state of Kerala. As per police, after shutting his store, late on Tuesday (July 26), the victim,32, was on his way home when he was fatally attacked, PTI reported.<o:p></o:p>

As soon as the victim was attacked, he tried to escape and run but after taking a hit to the head, he collapsed, officials said. Locals called the police right away who reached the spot immediately and took the victim to the hospital, where the staff pronounced him dead. Following this instance, a demonstration organised by BJP and several other Hindu organisations, against the killing was held in front of the hospital.

In protest over the killing, the VHP has called for a band in the district’s Kadaba, Suliya, and Puttur Taluks. Additionally, Udupi and Dakshina Kannada district has tightened their security.

Basavaraj Bommai, the chief minister of Karnataka, condemned the murder of the BJP Youth Member and promised that those responsible for the act will soon be apprehended and punished in accordance with the law, said on Twitter.<o:p></o:p>

As per Home Minister Agra Jnanendra, the area where the instance happened is near the Kerala border, and police are currently making particular efforts to apprehend the preparators by getting in touch with top Kerala police officials.

BJP youth member hacked to death in Karnataka, chief minister promises to punish the culprits

Anti-UN intense protests in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo claimed the lives of three UN peacekeepers amongst which two were Indian Border Security Force (BSF) employees and at least 12 civilians, as a BSF&nbsp;and UN spokesperson said.&nbsp;The UN mission, MONUSCO, is accused of failing to shield civilian militia violence that has raged for years, which sparked the protests. At least five people were murdered and about 50 others were injured on the second day of the protests in Goma, the Associated Press reported. As per a senior officer, the two deceased BSP members were head constables and both belonged to Rajasthan.<o:p></o:p>

The two BSF members, Head Constable (GD) Sanwala Ram&nbsp;Vishnoi&nbsp;and&nbsp;Head Constable (GD) Shishupal&nbsp;Singh, of the UN Peacekeeping Contingent (MONUSCO) were stationed in Butembo, died on July 26 as a result of several injuries sustained during the tumultuous armed demonstrations, a BSF spokesperson said. As per officials, two platoons or approximately 70-74 BSF soldiers were stationed in the region and were inducted in May this year, PTI reported.

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar expressed his great sorrow over the deaths of the two brave Indian peacekeepers and asked those who are responsible must be held accountable and brought to justice. &nbsp;The minister sent his sympathies to the families of the deceased.

During a daily press conference at the UN, Farhan Haq, deputy spokesperson for UN secretary general state that the violence against the UN peacekeeping force is rising in the Democratic Republic of Congo. He claimed that the attackers took weapons from the Congolese police and opened fire on the UN soldiers.
