A major storm ripped through the south-central and eastern parts of the United States, destroying a major portion of the impacted towns. As quoted by news agencies, the officials said on Saturday that the death toll has risen to 22, with dozens of others sustaining injuries.

A spokesperson for the emergency management agency in Tennessee, which is one of the hardest states, confirmed seven weather-related fatalities to the news agency AFP.

The death toll in Tennessee was in addition to 14 deaths reported in Arkansas, Mississippi and Alabama in the south, and Indiana and Illinois in the Midwest.

Analysts have predicted thunderstorms, hail and powerful winds through late Sunday as the storm system on Saturday was bearing down on the US east coast.

The state's governor said on Friday that the storm had sent multiple tornadoes sweeping through Arkansas, including in the capital Little Rock. Some experts have said that some tornadoes were of exceptional size and power.

As quoted by NBC News, the weather service field office in Nashville said on Saturday: "We will be surveying damage from likely tornadoes that struck many of our Middle Tennessee counties overnight, including Wayne, Lewis, Marshall, Rutherford, Cannon, and Macon Counties. Due to the widespread damage, it will take us several days to reach all these areas."

Mayor Jennifer Hobbs told CNN the city of Wynne, in northeastern Arkansas, was "cut in half by damage from east to west".

According to a list of storm reports collected by the agency noted that the damage includes downed trees, power lines and "houses with heavy damage" in multiple counties.

Pakistan's former prime minister Imran Khan has alleged that former army chief Gen (retd) Qamar Javed Bajwa pressurised him to extend friendship with neighbouring India. Khan suggested that apparently, Bajwa wanted to develop cordial relations with New Delhi.

Dunya News reported on Saturday (April 1) that the chairman of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party spoke to journalists in Lahore and also claimed that Bajwa was not a man of principles.

Khan said that Bajwa said something one day and then retracted it the next day.

India and Pakistan share complex ties with relations often impacted by cross-border terrorism, ceasefire violations, territorial disputes, and more.

Both India and Pakistan have reiterated their desire for a peaceful neighbourhood. Earlier this month, Islamabad had again denied it was holding any "back channel" talks with bordering India.

Media reports noted that Foreign Office spokesperson Mumtaz Zahra Baloch, responded to a question at a weekly briefing to answer that "at this stage, there is no back channel (talks) between Pakistan and India".

News agency Reuters had reported that there was a prospect for a potential breakthrough in relations when the two nations reportedly held secret discussions in 2021.

While talking about the political situation, the PTI chairman said if the elections were not held in 90 days, there would be no constitution left in the country and then he would take direct action.

Finnish Prime Minister Sanna Marin on Saturday (April 1) urged people to cast their votes for her Social Democratic Party (SDP), which according to her is a "better alternative". Over 2,400 candidates from 22 parties are vying for the 200 seats in the Finnish parliament, the Eduskunta.

Marin, who in 2019 became the world's youngest premier at 34, addressed people as she campaigned ahead of Sunday's election which sees three parties running neck-and-neck in opinion polls.

While speaking at a rally in central Helsinki, Marin said, "Tell your friends, family and relatives that now is the time to vote, now is the time to vote Social Democrats."

She argued that if SDP doesn't come out on top in the elections, we will see a right-wing government of the Finns and the National Coalition Party that will "pursue policies that are really unfair from the point of view of ordinary people".

In Finland, three parties are running neck-and-neck in opinion polls. The most recent survey shows the National Coalition leading with 19.8 per cent support, ahead of the Social Democrats and the Finns Party at 19.2 per cent each. At the rally, Marin told the news agency Reuters, "The situation is very tight. We have three parties that are eye-to-eye with each other. Anyone of these three parties can win tomorrow and of course we hope that we will enter first and continue our work that we have been doing for the last four years."

Marin, one of Europe's youngest leaders, received praise for her handling of the COVID pandemic and her role in advocating for Finland's successful application to join NATO. Her vocal support of Ukraine increased her visibility.

Marin is fighting to stay in power as the country faces a recession.

Finland votes: PM Sanna Marin faces tough election battle in bid for second term

Investigators in the United States revealed that they have nabbed a 29-year-old man after collecting DNA from a partially eaten burrito, which has linked him to the 2022 Mother's Day firebombing of an anti-abortion group in Wisconsin.

The man has been charged with one felony count of attempting to cause damage by means of fire or an explosive. When the attack took place, no one from the group was in the office and no injuries were reported.

The office of the United States attorney for the Western District of Wisconsin in Madison noted that the man, identified as Hridindu Sankar Roychowdhury, was arrested on Tuesday (March 28) at the Logan International Airport in Boston.

Matthew G Olsen, who is the assistant attorney general of the national security division of the Justice Department, said in a statement: "According to the complaint, Mr. Roychowdhury used an incendiary device in violation of federal law in connection with his efforts to terrorise and intimidate a private organisation."

Olsen commended the "commitment and professionalism" of law enforcement personnel who worked exhaustively to ensure that justice is served.

The court documents mentioned the complaint, which divulged details of the case. Last year on Mother's Day, May 8, officials responded to an active fire at an office building located in Madison, Wisconsin early in the morning.

Once they were inside the building, they observed a mason jar under a broken window. The jar was broken, and the lid and screw top was burned black.

The court document revealed that police also saw a purple disposable lighter near the mason jar and on the opposite wall from the window, the police saw another mason jar with the lid on and a blue cloth tucked into the top. They said that the cloth was singed. The jar was about half full of a clear fluid that smelled like an accelerant.

Jonathan Jacob Meijer, a 41-year-old Dutchman, might find himself in a bit of trouble for his apparent "good deed". Meijer, a sperm donor, is believed to have fathered 550 children, but The Times reported that he is being sued for increasing the risk of accidental incest.

Meijer is reportedly from The Hague and now lives in Kenya. He is a musician by profession. The report states that the civil lawsuit has been filed by Donorkind Foundation, which is a Dutch organisation that advocates donor kids.

The organisation wants the court to take action against Meijer's excessive donation. Apparently, sperm donation of this magnitude breached existing rules in the Netherlands and many other countries.

The organisation has asked the court to identify which clinics he has donated to and destroy his samples stored there.

However, it also noted that an exception can be made for those samples which are stored by women who had Meijer's child and might want a genetic sibling in future.

An unverified video of Waris Punjab De chief Amritpal Singh surfaced on the social media forums on Thursday (March 30), in which the radical preacher can be heard saying that he is not "surrendering". He asserted he was not a fugitive and would soon appear before the world.

The video came a day after he had released another video and dared the Punjab police to arrest him. The video also debunked the audio clip claiming that he was negotiating his surrender.

Singh spoke in Punjabi, which can be loosely translated to English as: "Those who feel that I have turned fugitive and I have left my associates, they should not keep this illusion in their mind. I do not fear death. And soon will appear before the world and will also be amongst the 'Sangat'".

Meanwhile, the police are on high alert and have stepped up security in and around Amritsar and Bathinda amid reports that Amritpal Singh may surrender after entering any of the two Sikh shrines - Golden Temple in Amritsar and Takht Sri Damdama Sahib in Bathinda.

Margaret Ferrier, a Scottish politician, is facing a 30-day suspension from the House of Commons or taking a train from London to Glasgow despite being tested positive for coronavirus (COVID-19) when the pandemic had begun.

In September 2020, Ferrier admitted she broke Covid rules. Her test results were awaited but spoke in Parliament. She also took the train home to Glasgow after testing positive.

The United Kingdom media outlets reported that the standards committee has recommended Ferrier should be suspended from the House of Commons which could lead to a possibility of a by-election Rutherglen and Hamilton West constituency.

Ferrier has also been asked to complete 270 hours of community service as she admits exposing the public "to the risk of infection, illness and death".

If she gets the suspension, it would lead to a recall petition, opening up the possibility of a byelection in a seat which was won by the Scottish National party in 2019 and by Labour in 2017.

The UK-based media outlets chalked out what might happen next. It is noted that the MPs will vote on whether or not to follow the recommendations of the committee.

If suspended, the MP will be removed from the Commons for at least 10 days and can be recalled and a by-election held if at least 10 per cent of the registered voters in their constituency sign a petition calling for it to happen.

Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday (March 30) signed a decree on spring conscription, which will apparently begin on April 1 and last until July 15, Russian state-owned news agency RIA reported.

The official online portal of legal information of the Russian government published the document to divulge details. The call up is for those who are not in the reserve and meet the requirements of the law "On military duty and military service".

The conscription campaign is calling 147,000 citizens up for statutory military service.

RIA also reported that the head of state has also instructed the government, regional authorities and draft commissions to make sure that the draft-related activities are implemented.

The news agency mentioned that using the same decree, Putin also decided to dismiss "from military service soldiers, sailors, sergeants and foremen whose term of military service has expired."

A union said on Tuesday (March 28) that the Paris trash collectors will suspend a three-week strike this week. The strike has left the beautiful French capital with thousands of tonnes of garbage piles lying on the street, causing an unbearable stink. The announcement came on the 23rd day of the strike against President Emmanuel Macron's pension reforms.

As quoted by the news agencies, CGT union said that the walkout would be suspended from Wednesday to allow coordination with workers "so we can go on strike again even more strongly" as fewer workers were now striking.

The CGT said: "We need to discuss again with City Hall's refuse collectors and cleaning workers to start again with a stronger strike … because we have almost no strikers left."

Meanwhile, fresh clashes erupted after tens of thousands took to the streets to show their anger against the pension reform. On Tuesday, protesters in Paris set fire to garbage cans and threw projectiles at police. The officials charged at them and fired tear gas on the fringes of a march against Macron and his deeply unpopular pension bill.

Earlier in the day, the government rejected unions' demand to suspend and rethink the pension bill, which raises the retirement age by two years to 64.

Seoul said in a report on Thursday (March 30) that North Korea executes people for drugs, sharing South Korean media, and religious activities as it stifles its citizens' human rights and freedom.

South Korea's Unification Ministry has collated the report, basing the 450-page report on testimony and information gathered from 2017 to 2022 of over 500 North Koreans who fled from their homeland.

The ministry, which is responsible for handling inter-Korean affairs, said in the report: "North Korean citizens' right to life appears to be greatly threatened."
