Sri Lanka is currently going through its worst economic crisis since gaining its independence in 1948 but according to a new report, things were not looking good since 2019. The data, released by Sri Lanka’s central statistical agency on Monday, stated that almost 10 per cent of the country’s population were struggling with food supply before the COVID-19 pandemic started. The report also shows that things got worse as the economy started suffering with the ban on chemical fertilisers.

“By the end of 2019, as much as 9.1 per cent of the Sri Lankan population was at the risk of not having access to basic food items, out of which 0.9 per cent or nearly 200,000 people were on the brink of facing starvation,” the Department of Census and Statistics said in their report.

The report shows that the share of food insecurity moved up from 9.1 per cent to 9.45 per cent due to the pandemic – meaning one in every 10 families getting affected by it, according to PTI.

The food insecurity and economic crisis created uproar among the Sri Lankan population and things got worse in 2021 when President Gotabaya Rajapaksa banned the use of chemical fertilisers.

Before the war started in Ukraine, Russia accounted for 40 percent of the European Union’s gas and 27 percent of its imported oil. However, since the crisis started, the EU have taken steps to reduce their import, but no complete ban has been placed yet despite multiple requests from Ukraine.

The report claims that EU accounted for 61 per cent of the total exports during the first 100 days of the war. The other importers were China, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Turkey and Poland.

The report also said that Russia’s income came from crude oil ($48.2bn), followed by pipeline gas ($25.1bn), oil products ($13.6bn), liquefied natural gas, or LNG, ($5.3bn) and coal ($4.8bn).

Although the amount of oil and gas exported by Russia decreased in the time period, it was balanced by the authorities with higher prices. According to CREA, the prices were almost 60 per cent higher.

“India became a significant importer of Russian crude oil, buying 18% of the country’s exports,” CREA said, adding that a “significant share of the crude is re-exported as refined oil products”.

Chicken nuggets is a delicacy that is enjoyed all around the world and due to its small size, it is quite common for people to take multiple helpings of the dish. However, celebrity chef Nick DiGiovanni from the USA and Lynn Davis from Japan has created a chicken nugget big enough to feed a huge number of people. The duo created a chicken nugget weighing an astonishing 20.96 kg and, in the process, claimed the world record by a massive margin. This was the second world record for the two well-known chefs after they baked the largest cake pop in the world which weighed 44.24 kg.

DiGiovanni and Davis posted a video on YouTube showing the making of the massive chicken nugget.

It was a massive endeavor by the two chefs who used 40 slices of bread, almost half a gallon of milk, 40 eggs and 18 kg of chicken to create the huge feat. They even had to use a commercial oven to create the world record-breaking nugget after doing practice runs in ordinary ovens.

It took the two chefs around 12 hours to complete the process after a number of attempts. They were not able to determine the exact temperature needed for the cook but were able to figure it out.

The record was officially recognised by the Guinness Book of World Records as adjudicator Claire Stephens examined the entire process as well as the final product. The video quickly went viral on social media as a huge number of people praised the effort and even called it “inspirational”.

In a bid to bring down foreign currency rates, exporters have been instructed to offer their banknotes in the market, according to Al-Jazeera. The governor of Iran’s central bank - Ali Salehabadi – also said that they have cashed in $7.5bn worth of proceeds from sales of crude oil till May 21.

Iran has also not taken the UN resolution quite well and in response, they took down a number of cameras from nuclear plants all around the country. The cameras belong to the UN nuclear watchdog in order to keep an eye on Iran’s nuclear activities as part of the Iran Nuclear Deal.

According to an international team of academics and digital technology experts who are tracking thefts, there is a specialist gang active in Ukraine who are smuggling historic artifacts to Russia by taking advantage of the current situation.

“There is now very strong evidence this is a purposive Russian move, with specific paintings and ornaments targeted and taken out to Russia,” anthropologist Brian Daniels told The Guardian.

The team believes that the most smuggled item from Ukraine at the moment is Scythian gold. The tribes known as Scythia of central Asia and eastern Europe built these valuable filigree pieces many years ago and there is a considerable amount of them present in parts of Ukraine at this point.

“These items are visually stunning, and there are now so many reports of thefts it is evident that it is a strategy. The Ukrainians, of course, are also very keen that we establish a list of stolen items,”&nbsp;

Chinese Defence Minister General Wei Fenghe said on Sunday that China and India have taken part in 15 rounds of talks at the commander level till now and assured that both countries are working towards establishing peace along the Line of Actual Control. During his address at the Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore, Fenghe said that it is in the mutual interest of both India and China to maintain peace in the region and that is why both parties are trying extremely hard to reach an agreement. When asked about the conflict around the LAC, he said - “We have had 15 rounds of talks at commander level with the Indians and we are working together for peace in this area”.

However, Fenghe claimed that China has found Indian-owned weapons on their side and said that India has also sent people beyond the border.

“But on frictions along the border areas, the merits of the issue are clear. I personally experienced the start and end of the frictions as Defence minister. We have found a lot of weapons owned by the Indian side. They have also sent people to the Chinese side of the territory,” Fenghe said.

Fenghe was also quite critical of the United States and said that they are trying to “hijack” the support of countries in the Indo-Pacific region in order to turn nations against China.

There were a few concerns expressed by the United States State Department last year about China’s growing arsenal of nuclear weapons and even decided to ask China to engage with them "on practical measures to reduce the risks of destabilising arms races" to keep maintaining the peace.

Fenghe made it clear that the ultimate goal of the nuclear arsenal that China possesses right now is to deter or completely prevent nuclear war. There were no comments made about the reports of China increasing their weapons, but he said that all of their existing ones are completely functional.

"We developed nuclear capabilities to protect the hard work of the Chinese people and protect our people from the scourge of the nuclear warfare," he said.

“If due to Russian blockades, we are unable to export our foodstuffs, which is so sorely missing in global markets, the world will face an acute and severe food crisis and famine – famine in many countries of Asia and Africa,” Zelensky said while addressing the participating nations.
