Timing of emergency alert test

The alert will air at the same moment across every time zone in the country starting at 2:20 pm ET on Wednesday (Oct 4). The test is scheduled to last approximately one minute. It will only go out once, there will be no repeats.

Americans brace for emergency alert test on October 4. What to expect?

India is considering banning the use of perfumes by pilots and flight attendants. The Office of the Director General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), which oversees the country’s aviation industry, recently proposed an update to its bylaws regarding alcohol consumption. This proposed ban also includes things other than alcoholic drinks, like perfume.

There is already reference to things other than alcoholic drinks that could cause a positive breath test, namely mouthwash, in the guidelines. However, a new section specifically mentions perfume.

It reads: “No crew member shall consume any drug/formulation or use any substance such as mouthwash/tooth gel/perfume or any such product which has alcoholic content.”

The text continues: “Any crew member who is undergoing such medication shall consult the company doctor before undertaking flying assignment.”

Perfume banned for pilots and flight attendants in new guidelines update

The ban on perfume is being considered because many fragrances include alcohol, which could generate a false-positive breathalyser test result.

The official air safety requirements for the DGCA were ratified in August 2015. The proposed addition is up for public comment through October 5.

Pilots and cabin crew are regularly subjected to pre-flight breathalyzer tests, which are among the most stringent alcohol regulations for aircrew in the world. An instant three-month license suspension is possible for even the smallest amount of alcohol, which is seen as a favourable result.

According to the aviation site that monitors test results, in 2022 alone, 41 Indian pilots and 116 cabin crew members had their licenses temporarily suspended after testing positive for alcohol.

The proposed ban aims to tackle the possibility of falsely positive breathalyser results and guarantee the greatest level of aviation safety. The DGCA seeks to avoid any compromise to the sobriety standards necessary for pilots and crew members by forbidding the use of items that contain alcohol.

Pilot drunkenness is an issue that has affected the aviation industry worldwide.

In 2018, Katsutoshi Jitsukawa, a pilot for Japan Airlines, was sentenced to 10 months in prison after a breath test taken shortly after takeoff showed that his blood alcohol level was nine times the legal limit.

And in the US, a Delta pilot named Gabriel Lyle Schroeder was escorted off a fully boarded plane pre-takeoff when he was suspected of being under the influence of alcohol.

When Pinto was walking through the city centre, she was stopped by an old woman who asked to read her palm. The old woman predicted that Pinto only had a few days to live and then gave Pinto chocolate as a gift. Of course, Pinto took it casually.

Soon after eating the chocolate, Pinto started experiencing uneasiness in her chest.

Tale of misfortune

Recalling how Pinto died after eating the chocolate, her cousin Bianca Cristina shared the details.

“She[Fernanda Valoz Pinto] vomited, her vision was a bit blurred, her body was soft… it was a matter of hours,” Cristina told Globo1.

“As [the candy] was packaged, it didn’t occur to her [that it could pose any danger]. And as she was hungry, she decided to eat it,” informed Cristina.

After eating the chocolate, Pinto started feeling ill and shared her ordeal with her family through text messages.

“My heart is racing. I’ve thrown up. But I have this taste in my mouth. So bitter. Bad. My vision is blurry. I’m so weak," explained Pinto.

“I leant on the water tank. I almost fell. I almost met God. I don’t know why I’m like this, sis. I’ve been feeling bad all day,” continued Pinto.

The toxicology reports generated from biosamples from her autopsy revealed high concentrations of pesticides - Sulfotep and Terbufos - in her body. The investigations are still on to prove if the chocolate was the source of Pinto’s poisoning.

Law Enforcement authorities are also trying to find out if the fortune teller was hired to kill Pinto.

“I don’t see anyone having a reason to do this to her, but we don’t know what’s in anyone’s heart. Whether it was someone who ordered her to be killed or if the woman did it because she wanted to, only the police will find out,” said Pinto’s other cousin Lumenita Valoz.

The old woman predicted that Pinto only had a few days to live and then gave Pinto chocolate as a gift. Of course, Pinto took it casually. Soon after eating the chocolate, Pinto started experiencing uneasiness in her chest. Tale of misfortune Recalling how Pinto died after eating the chocolate, her cousin Bianca Cristina shared the details. 6 Fascinating Astronomical Events Lined Up For October 2023

The month of October is full of celestial surprises. From the 'ring of fire' solar eclipse to the Hunter's Moon, the month will be sky-gazer's delight. Mark your calendars for these six upcoming astronomical events.

Draconid Meteor Shower, also called the Giacobinds, is a rare sight in a sense that its radiant point stands highest in the sky as darkness falls. This is why the best time to see it is in the evening hours.

This annular eclipse is the second of three notable solar eclipses viewable from the USA. It follows the 'Great American' total eclipse of August 2017 and comes six months before the Mexico-US-Canada total eclipse of April 2024.

The new moon appears when the sun and moon are aligned, with the sun and earth on opposite sides of the moon. The best time to see the new moon will vary based on time zone.

The Orionids will be the second meteor shower in October. The shower peaks on October 21-22 but usually remains active between October 2 and November 7. The best time to see these shooting stars is between midnight and sunrise.

This partial lunar eclipse will be part of the Hunter's Moon which will be visible from Europe, Africa and Asia. The eclipse can be found between the curvature of the shadow's path and the apparent rotation of the moon's disk (which occurs due to its rotation).

The October Full Moon is traditionally called the Hunter's Moon. October is a time to start preparing for the coming winter by hunting or slaughtering animals and preserving meat and this is where the name Hunter's Moon comes from.

This October is going to be a delight for sky-gazers, especially if you have been waiting to catch the elusive ‘ring of fire’ solar eclipse. Besides the fascinating cosmic display, there are more beautiful astronomical events to watch out for during October’s crisp and cool evenings.

In October, the days will get shorter and colder, but the night sky remains as hot as ever. It is because the northern hemisphere has officially passed the autumnal equinox.

The “ring of fire” solar eclipse will be visible on October 14 and two weeks later, celestial enthusiasts can witness the Hunter’s Moon. Meteor showers and some aurora activity can also be seen later this month.

‘Ring of fire’ solar eclipse: How and when to watch

The ‘ring of fire’ solar eclipse or annular solar eclipse will appear on October 14. On this day, the moon will pass in front of the sun, obscuring much of it, but leaving behind a brilliant ring, also called annulus, of unfiltered sunlight. This phenomenon is known as an “annular” or “ring of fire” solar eclipse.

Like two Hula-Hoops, one inside the other and tipped, the path the sun appears to take around the sky once per year and the moon’s monthly orbit intersect at two points, called nodes. We only get a solar eclipse when both the sun and moon are at a node at the same time; otherwise the moon “misses” the sun in the sky, passing it above or below.

With the right kind of protective eyewear, the astronomical event can be seen clearly. The duration of its appearance will vary from little more than one minute to almost five, depending upon where you are located in its path.

The eclipse will have a 125-mile-wide path of annularity that will begin in Oregon at 12:13 pm EDT. It will leave the United States at about 1:03 pm EDT and head southeastward towards Central and South America.

In Washington, the partial eclipse begins at noon on October 14, with the maximum eclipse occurring at 1:19 pm EDT. At this time, about 30 per cent of the sun’s disk will be obscured by the moon. The eclipse ends at 2:39 pm EDT.

6 Greatest Physics Theories that Changed the World Forever

Isaac Newton formulated laws of motion and universal gravitation, which describe the motion of objects under the influence of forces. His theory explained many phenomena- orbits of planets, tides, and the motion of projectiles.

James Maxwell combined the theories of electricity and magnetism, which describe how electric charges and currents produce electric and magnetic fields. His theory also predicted the existence of electromagnetic waves such as light, radio, waves and X-rays.

Thermodynamics defines concepts of temperature, entropy and free energy, which are useful for studying the efficiency of engines, the direction of spontaneous processes and the equilibrium state of systems. It was developed by William Thomson, Sadi Carnot, Rudolf Clausius and Ludwig Boltzmann.

Albert Einstein proposed the theory of special relativity, which describes how space and time are relative to the state of motion of an observer. The theory revolutionsed our understanding of space and time, and resolve some paradoxes that arose from Newton's theory to objects moving at very high speeds.

Physicists such as Max Planck, Niels Bohr, Werner Hisenberg and Erwin Schrodinger developed the theory of quantum mechanics. It describes how matter and energy behave at the smallest scales, which explains many phenomena like superconductivity and chemical bonding.

Cosmology is the study of the origin, structure, and evolution of the universe which was deduced by various physicists- Georges Lemaitre, Edwin Hubble, Stephen Hawking, Robert Herman among may others. The theory explain phenomena such as Big Bang, cosmic microwave background, expansion of universe, formation of galaxies, cosmic inflation, and dark matter.
