Mysterious ring-like patterns of vegetation surround barren patches of soil in Namibia and Australia, but no one knows why. These ring-like patterns are called ‘fairy circles’, which have baffled scientists for decades and left them thinking about what exactly are they. Now, new research regarding these peculiar patterns hopes to provide some insights into the formation and locations of these patterns.

"We conducted a global and systematic assessment of fairy circle-like vegetation patterns and discovered hundreds of [fairy-circle]-like locations on three continents," writes a team led by environmental scientist Emilio Guirado of the University of Alicante in Spain.

What are fairy circles?

Fairy circles are unexplained peculiar ring-like patterns of vegetation that are generally found in barren lands of Namibia and Australia. A new global assessment has counted a total of 263 such sites of bald spots with these puzzled patterns. They are spread across three continents and 15 countries, including Sahel, Madagascar, and Middle-West Asia.

What does a new study about fairy circles tell us?

The new study provides insights into the ecology and biogeography of the fascinating vegetation patterns and the first atlas of their global vegetation, said Emilio.

Emilio and his team undertook a systematic survey using very high-resolution satellite imagery, and used machine learning to analyse the results, to carefully study 574,799 hectare-sized plots of land around the world. This painstaking analysis rewarded the scientists with a vastly expanded atlas of fairy circle sites.

"Our analyses revealed 263 locations with [fairy-circle]-like vegetation patterns distributed across dry lands worldwide," they write.

This information, the researchers say, will help in narrowing down what causes them. This is because they were able to identify specific features common to all sites in which fairy circles can be found. These include a very dry, arid, desert environment; high temperatures and high precipitation seasonality; and soil with very low nutrients, and a high sand content.

Interestingly, the team also found that areas with fairy rings show more stable vegetation productivity over time than surrounding areas without fairy rings. Their findings, Emilio and his colleagues say, can help identify region-specific reasons why fairy circles might emerge.

"The global atlas introduced here advances our understanding of the biogeography of fairy circle-like vegetation patterns and will facilitate conducting future research about the characteristics and mechanisms underlying these enigmatic vegetation patterns in locations never studied so far," they write.

The dipping water levels of Canyon Lake in Texas have revealed some fascinating geological features. People who were boating at the reservoir chanced upon some caves that had been hiding from plain sight till now near the lake.

The hidden cave has been revealed at a time when water levels of the popular lake have been falling for months as an effect of the severe drought that has gripped the state.

Canyon Lake

Canyon Lake is a reservoir on the Guadalupe River situated in Comal County in Texas. It was built to help with flood control and water conservation. The construction of the dam started in 1958 and finished in 1964.

The lake was filled up to the conservation pool level by 1968 and hit its lowest point in recorded history in late August.

As of Tuesday, Canyon Lake was 65.7 per cent full, a 20 per cent fall from this time a year ago, according to a report by Water Data for Texas.

Hidden caves found a Canyon Lake

Last weekend, when Canyon Lake resident Pamela Hough Gilbert was out enjoying at the reservoir with her husband, she saw an exposed cave in an area of the lake known as “party cove.”

“I’ve heard rumours about underwater caves in Canyon Lake for 40 years or more. It was just so cool to finally see one materialize,” Gilbert told KSAT on Tuesday. “Canyon Lake has lots of secrets.”

Despite being a fascinating discovery, the cave also evoked a creepy feeling, and Gilbert said she refrained from venturing inside.

Caves aren't the only thing hiding beneath Canyon Lake's surface, as divers have previously discovered entire towns at the bottom of the lake. The reservoir is managed by the US Army Corps of Engineers. It's not uncommon for manmade lakes to be filled over existing structures or geological features, whether that be towns, caves or trees.

However, as the water levels fall, exposed objects can pose a risk for boaters. Roughly 100 miles northeast of Canyon Lake, another popular Texas lake is experiencing similar issues. Officials have warned boaters and swimmers to exercise caution when in the lake.

5 Reasons Why you Should Start Journaling Today

Journaling is any form of patterned writing that helps you put to paper your thoughts and feelings. Psychologists suggest journaling as a form of self-expression, but it is more than just that. Here is why you should start journaling today:

Writing down your worries or unresolved conflicts on paper helps reduce anxiety and stress. It is best to journal right before going to bed, it will also help in promoting restful sleep.

Putting your thoughts down in a diary regularly brings more clarity to your thinking. Reading back your words on paper provides a fresh perspective and clarity.

Facing your fears or worries, even if just on paper, can lead to greater clarity and a sense of control over your life. Studies show journaling benefits overall emotional health, promoting confidence and enhancing self-identity.

Writing a journal is like talking to yourself or doing a guided meditation. The more you express yourself through writing, the better you know about yourself. You can even go one step further with this, by reading your old journals. This way you see how you've evolved as a person.

A regular practice of expressive writing eases anxiety and depression, lifts your mood and enhances your emotional well-being. Writing about trauma, stressful or emotional events leades to measurable improvements in psychological health and overall mood.

Eating fruits after a meal can cause digestive problems as they get mixed with the food already consumed and limit its proper absorption. This also changes the nutritional value of the food you're consuming.

Nutritionists believe that smoking after a meal is equivalent to smoking 10 cigarettes. Cigarettes contain carcinogens which may worsen irritable bowel syndrome and even lead to ulcerative colitis.

Do not take a shower after meals. When you take a shower after meals, the blood rushes to the skin to regulate the temperature of the body which may lead to digestive problems as digestion needs a lot of energy.

Drinking tea or coffee after a meal is bad for health, as phenolic compounds present in tea and coffee limit the absorption of iron. It is better to consume tea or coffee an hour later having a meal.

When you drink water right after your meals, it reduces the secretion of enzymes and juices in the stomach. It may cause acidity and bloating, making digestion difficult. It is advised to drink water at least half an hour after having a meal.

Exercising right after meals can disrupt your digestion process. You may even experience vomiting, stomach puffiness, and loose motions. Walking and doing vajrasana (thunderbolt pose) can be done after heaving a meal.

6 Things to Avoid After a Full Meal

Women in Southeast Asia have long used rice water on their hair and face for beauty benefits. Here are a few reasons you too need to indulge in this magical potion.

Most skin care experts believe that rice water has skin-brightening effects because it is a good source of vitamins and antioxidants. Rice water is a natural and gentle exfoliator which gets rid of dead skin cells and brightens the skin.

Rice water has the ability to tighten pores. To do this, pour rice water on a cotton pad and dab it onto the skin for a mattified appearance. Apart from this, rice water also balances the skin's elasticity and provides deep hydration.

Rice water has the ability to soothe sun damage. The antioxidant-rich solution is a natural sunscreen and protects the skin against UV rays. It works wonders in reducing itching, inflammation and redness.

Rice water is an effective anti-ageing ingredient because it stimulates blood circulation and improves the synthesis of collagen production in the skin. It cuts down trans-epidermal water loss, thus reducing wrinkles.

Rice starch acts as a natural barrier against environmental stressors. Regular use of rice water for acne will protect it against pollution.

If you have oily and acne-prone skin, applying rice water to acne regularly will help reduce painful red bumps. This medicinal water is rich in starch that cleanses the skin pores of sebum and pollutants, thus reducing acne and pimples.

6 Benefits of Rice Water for Skin

An American woman who ran an animal rescue shelter at her home has been arrested after dozens of abused dogs were discovered and five dead puppies were found in the freezer, according to Arizona police. The 48-year-old woman from Chandler, April McLaughlin, was taken into custody on Friday after a search warrant was executed at her house.

The search was based on multiple calls and reports from concerned neighbours, who complained about smells coming from the home and hoarding conditions, police said.

Police also said that most of the 55 dogs removed from the home were elderly and special-needs animals. They were without water and in a very bad condition, so much so that many were likely to be euthanised.

Her elderly mother also lived with her

When police entered the now-condemned home, the air quality was so bad that firefighters were called in wearing special breathing equipment. The house was then condemned, as per police authorities.

McLaughlin was booked into a Phoenix jail on 55 counts of animal abuse, 55 counts of animal cruelty and one count of vulnerable adult abuse because her elderly mother also lived in the home.

According to court documents, McLaughlin told police she didn’t believe there was anything wrong with storing food next to the dead animals in the freezer. She also said she had been running the rescue for a year and had taken in too many dogs.

A judge set McLaughlin's cash-only bail at $2,500 at her initial court appearance Saturday and said a public defender would be appointed to represent her. A message seeking comment was left with the Maricopa County public defenders' office, though it was unclear if a specific attorney had been assigned to the case yet.

McLaughlin has denied the allegations levied against her shelter.
