Scientists have discovered the fossil of a large ‘trapdoor’ spider in Australia. This is the fourth giant spider fossil to be found in Australia, but it is not just another fossilised spider. This is the world’s first fossil that belongs to the large brush-footed trapdoor spider family, Barychelidae. This new species used to live in the Miocene 11 to 16 million years ago, and is officially named Megamonodontium mccluskyi.

The findings were led by the Australian Museum (AM) and University of New South Wales (UNSW) palaeontologist Dr Matthew McCurry.

The spider fossil was found at McGraths in New South Wales. McGraths is a fossil site known for its iron-rich rock called “goethite”. This spider fossil, which is similar to Monodontium, is five times larger than the regular species. The spider was named after Dr Simon McClusky who found the specimen.

Why is this discovery significant?

Dr. McCurry said that very few fossil spiders have been found in Australia, making the discovery very significant.

"Only four spider fossils have ever been found throughout the whole continent, which has made it difficult for scientists to understand their evolutionary history. That is why this discovery is so significant; it reveals new information about the extinction of spiders and fills a gap in our understanding of the past."

7 Foods to Avoid During Digestive Problems

Dairy is hard to digest because of lactose, the sugar found in milk and other dairy products. If you consume too much lactose, it goes into the large intestine, and diarrhoea can develop or worsen.

Tomato sauce and citrus fruits, such as lemons, limes, oranges, and grapefruit, are acidic and can irritate the stomach lining, causing digestive problems. Many people don’t realise that carbonated beverages are also acidic. When you have an upset stomach, avoid acidic foods.

Fatty foods stimulate contractions in the digestive tract, which can either slow down the emptying of the stomach and worsen constipation, or speed up movement and lead to worsening diarrhea.

The problem with fried foods is the same as with fatty foods — they can move, undigested, through the body too quickly, leading to diarrhoea, or stay in your digestive tract too long, causing you to feel full and bloated.

If you’re constipated, you should avoid processed foods because they lack fibre, which helps regulate bowel movements. Note that some packaged foods also contain lactose, which can give you gas and worsen any discomfort you’re already going through.

Alcohol is toxic to the stomach lining and changes liver metabolism. Drinking too much can cause indigestion, among other health problems.

Caffeine stimulates gastrointestinal tract motility, making contents move more quickly through your system, and excessive amounts can give anyone diarrhoea. So, if you already have diarrhoea, caffeine will only worsen your digestive problem.

7 Foods to Avoid During Digestive Problems

Generally, liver disease is any disturbance in the functioning of the extremely vital organ that leads to illness. Certain liver diseases are chronic in nature and build up over time, leading to liver failure in the advanced stages. Here are some early signs of liver damage:

One of the common signs of liver disease is itchy skin. If you have itchy skin, then it could be a sign of obstructive jaundice. It can be caused by stones in bile duct, cancer of bile duct or of head of pancreas, primary biliary cirrhosis.

In chronic liver disease, you may accumulate fluid in your legs. This makes the legs swollen. Fluid can accumulate in the legs (oedema) due to increased pressure in the portal vein (ascites). Oedema and ascites can also be caused by the liver’s inability to produce enough blood proteins.

The decline in health in chronic liver failure can be slow until a dramatic event occurs, such as vomiting blood or blood in stools. Bleeding from varicose veins in the oesophagus and stomach is the most common cause of blood in the vomit or stool.

Due to the accumulation of toxins in the blood, sleep cycle may get disturbed. Patients with liver cirrhosis frequently complain of sleep disturbances, particularly daytime sleepiness and insomnia.

In chronic liver disease fluid may accumulate in the abdomen causing abdominal distension. Fluid leaks from the surface of the liver and intestine cause ascites, a fluid buildup in the abdominal cavity.

Death is an inevitable truth, something that we cannot predict, control or stop. But with the increasing role of artificial intelligence (AI) in technology, death has found a new meaning — a digital afterlife with “digital necromancy”.

Generative AI, which encompasses large language models (LLMs) like ChatGPT, has the ability to work beyond their program — conjuring the dead from the digital traces they leave behind. As eerie as it sounds, it is even more dangerous, but some researchers believe it is of no harm.

What is ‘digital necromancy’?

Digital necromancy is continuing bonds with the dead through text, images or artefacts using technology, like AI-based models. It first sparked debate in the 2010s when dead artists Bruce Lee, Michael Jackson and Tupac Shakur were reanimated using “deep fake” technology. It also led to posthumous film appearances by Carrie Fisher and Peter Cushing.

When ChatGPT made headlines in the public, one user in late 2022, used OpenAI’s chatbot to talk to his dead fiancée based on her previous texts and emails.

Seeing the potential, a series of start-ups were launched to draw generative AI in order to reanimate loved ones for the bereaved.

The debate around ‘digital necromancy’

Experts believe this technology seems to cross a cultural and perhaps even ethical line with many experiencing a deep unease with the idea that one might interact with digital simulations of the dead regularly. Digital necromancy is viewed as suspicious and left many people worried.

But sociologists working on cultural practices of remembrance and commemoration, who have also been experimenting with raising the dead using generative AI, said they think there is no cause for concern.

They argued that people place emotional value on things as a means of keeping the dead with them. Using AI to keep the dead close to you is just like having their portrait or videos with you as a way of memorising your loved ones, they argued.

Furthermore, the speed with which AI's necromantic possibilities have been exploited tells us a lot about how well the technology works with our existing practices of grieving, remembrance and commemoration – rather than "disrupting" or "changing" them.

But isn’t AI different?

The AI startups in this domain build on earlier do-it-yourself ventures in bringing back loved ones using generative AI. Using writing (for example, on social media and in emails), audio recordings of speech, photographs and videos of loved ones submitted by clients, they train AI models that make it possible to interact posthumously with "them" through images, voice and text.

As noted by Debra Bassett, who has studied digital afterlives extensively, some dissenters to this use of AI have stated that they are worried that the reanimated may be made to say things they wouldn't when alive and are instead acting out someone else's script. For Bassett, the concern is the dead are being "zombified" in a violation of their integrity.

Images, text and artefacts like past possessions or prized heirlooms have long been usable media for that kind of communion and new technologies, most recently cameras and recording devices, have always made such media more easily and widely accessible.

Digital Necromancy: AI is helping people communicate with the dead. But, is it safe?

The assumption that ageing is inevitably a process of cognitive and physical decline is one Daniel Levitin, professor of neuroscience at McGill University, sought to challenge in his book The Changing Mind. Here are three things that we tend to get better at with age, as per the book:

In your forties, you are tend to get better in chess, ultramarathons (longer than standard marathons), and reading a stranger's mood as both emotional and physical abilities peak from age 40-49.

In your fifties, you are tend to get better at riding and training a horse, maintaining a healthy self-esteem, and solving arithmetic problems.

If you are aiming for a Nobel prize, this is the right age to receive one as most Nobel recipients are often in their 50s and 60s. Beyond 60, people are tend to get better in resolving conflicts, gaining sexual satisfaction and wisdom, and being nice to each other.

In 70s, women are tend to become more confident with their bodies. In a 2014 poll of 80,000 Americans, satisfaction with body image peaked for women at 74. For men, it came even later, at about 80.

People in their 80s are the happiest. When people were asked to pinpoint the happiest time of their lives, the most common response is not childhood or teens but time around their 80s.

3 Things you Get Better At with Age

Neck pain is extremely common and may be caused by several factors, including poor posture and holding your head in one position for long. Practicing yoga is an excellent way to get rid of neck pain. Here are seven asanas to provide relief from neck pain.

Sit on your heels. Resting your hips on the heels, bend forward, and lower your forehead to the floor. Keep your arms alongside your body with hands on the floor, palms facing up. Gently press your chest on your thighs and hold the position for a few minutes. Slowly come up to sit on your heels, uncurling vertebra by vertebra, and relax.

Lie on your back with arms horizontally stretched out by your side. Bend your knees and bring your feet close to your hips. Swing the knees to the left until the left knee touches the ground. Turn the head to the right and look at your right palm. With each exhalation, relax deeper into the pose.

Come onto all fours. Become a table, your back forms the table top and your hands and feet form the legs of the table. Inhale, raise your chin and tilt your head back, push your navel down towards the floor and raise your tailbone. Take long, deep breaths. Exhale, drop your chin to your chest and arch your back up as much as you can.

Lie on your back and close your eyes, legs comfortably apart and let your feet and knees relax completely. Place arms alongside, palms facing upwards. Keep breathing gently and deeply and allow your breath to relax.Take a few deep breaths. When you feel complete and gently open your eyes.

Japanese PM Fumio Kishida’s wife Yuko Kishida wore a beautiful green saree.

Viparita Karaniasana (Legs-up-the wall pose)

Lie on your back close to a wall. Buttocks touching the wall. Lift your legs straight up against the wall. Feet are parallel to the ceiling and your legs are touching the wall. Rest with your arms next to the body with the palms facing upward. Take long deep breaths. Gradually come down, bringing the knees first.

This one is perhaps the most popular Indian tea preparation. It is made using a mix of spices such as ginger, cardamom, cinnamon, clove, fennel seeds, black peppercorn, etc. together with milk and black tea to which sugar or jaggery is added.

This one is a common household preparation in India, especially during winter or when you are down with a cold and cough as ginger carries medicinal properties. It is prepared like a regular chai tea with the addition of ginger.

This is a popular one in the Southern regions of India that experience a hot climate and also grow cardamom extensively. It is the milk chai preparation with the addition of cardamom.

This chai preparation is a simple one with cardamom, lemon and tea leaves brewed in water that is sweetened with palm jaggery.

This tea is from the Himalayan region, particularly popular in Tibet. It is made by boiling a brick of Pemagul black tea for hours. From there, milk, salt, and yak butter are added, and the mixture is then churned together.

Kashmiri kahwa or kehwa is a popular green tea preparation from the valley of Kashmir. It is made with the addition of saffron strands, cardamom, cinnamon and other dried fruits.

This is a street-style preparation of chai, famous in Bombay and served in small glass tumblers that are half the size of a regular teacup. Hence, the name cutting. The tea is prepared like a regular chai tea, only stronger.

World Alzheimer’s Day 2023: World Alzheimer’s Day, which is observed on September 21, is a global effort to raise awareness about Alzheimer’s disease. The disease is a serious brain condition and requires immediate treatment and supervision. The day not only raises awareness about Alzheimer’s disease symptoms and treatments but also aims to eradicate the stigma around the disease.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), Alzheimer’s disease is the most common type of dementia which contributes to 60-70 per cent of cases. It is a progressive brain disorder that affects memory, thinking capabilities and behaviour.

Alzheimer’s disease: Symptoms

Alzheimer’s disease is a brain disorder that slowly destroys memory and thinking skills and, eventually, the ability to carry out the simplest tasks. In most people with the disease, the late-onset type symptoms first appear in their mid-60s.

The disease is named after Dr Alois Alzheimer, who first noticed the brain tissue of a woman who died of an unusual mental illness in 1906.

Early symptoms

In the early stages, the main symptom of Alzheimer's disease is memory lapses. For example, someone with early Alzheimer's disease may:

-forget about recent conversations or events

-misplace items

-forget the names of places and objects

-have trouble thinking of the right word

-ask questions repetitively

-show poor judgement or find it harder to make decisions

-become less flexible and more hesitant to try new things

Alzheimer’s Day: History

Alzheimer's Disease International is an organisation that was founded back in 1984 to support Alzheimer's patients throughout the world and provide them with the right treatment. In 1994, World Alzheimer's Day was introduced in Edinburgh to commemorate ten years of Alzheimer's Disease International. Since then, World Alzheimer's Day has been celebrated worldwide on September 21.

Alzheimer’s Day: Theme

The month of September is observed as the World Alzheimer's Month. According to Alzheimer's Disease International, the theme for the month-long campaign is "Never too early, never too late."

Alzheimer’s Day: Significance

Globally, dementia is one of the biggest challenges that the world faces today, with nearly 50 million people living with dementia worldwide. To tackle this global dementia challenge, we need to work together and share best practices with one another.

Moreover, the day is observed to educate people about the causes, symptoms and treatment options of the disease. Myths surrounding Alzheimer's Disease also need to be busted, and on this day people come together to learn and support people and families afflicted by Alzheimer's disease.

World Alzheimer's Day 2023: History, significance, theme and early symptoms of Alzheimer's disease

Experts like Elon Musk and Eliezer Yudkowsky have long warned against the artificial intelligence’s (AI) threat to society, of “civilisation destruction.” When AI came, it was believed to revolutionise the technology that we know today, but the US military is using it for a rather tedious but basic purpose: understanding its whooping $816.7 billion budget.

US military’s policies on defence spending have been part of discussions among experts and American commoners alike, for many years. Now, the bloated annual spending of the Department of Defense (DOD) has reached a point where it can’t be managed by humans alone, but needs a more robust and efficient tech like AI to make sense of all those provisions.

The Pentagon has created an AI program to understand DOD’s hundreds of revisions and limitations, codenamed GAMECHANGER.

"For most people, policy is a tedious and [elusive] concept, making the idea of understanding and synthesizing tens of thousands of policy requirements a daunting task. But in the midst of the chaos that is the policy world, one DIA officer and a team at the Office of the Undersecretary of Defense for Intelligence & Security saw an opportunity," a press release about GAMECHANGER from the Defense Intelligence Agency, the military’s spy wing, says.

GAMECHANGER: Pentagon’s AI program

GAMECHANGER is an artificial intelligence and natural language processing application created with the purpose of improving the way DoD policymakers navigate the department’s mountain of policies and requirements.

The project was developed in 2018 but was paused due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It is the first unclassified tool of its kind and “is rapidly setting the precedent for how the Government utilises advanced technology to process vast amounts of data”, said DIA in the press release.

The program is developed by the Joint Artificial Intelligence Center, a subdivision of the US Air Force. Upon its completion, the Joint Artificial Intelligence Center transferred ownership of it to the office of the Defense Department comptroller, which handles budgetary and fiscal matters for the Pentagon.

How GAMECHANGER works?

The GAMECHANGER, like any other AI-based program, uses a natural processing application. Natural processing application is a broad term in computer science referring to the use of machine learning to allow computers to interpret human speech and writing.

GAMECHANGER specifically enables officers to understand their programs through the lens of higher guidance and helps the DOD focus on policy gaps and requirements.
