TikTok is spurred by a new trend - “carrot tan”. A new beauty trend claiming that eating three carrots a day will give you a natural beautiful tan. But the question is how true that is and how healthy it is? The question is simple but the answer is not.

Carrots are rich in cartenoid, a natural pigment that gives red, orange and yellow colours to fruits and vegetables. There are many types of cartenoids - lutein, lycopene, alpha-carotene and beta-carotene. It is beta-carotene (a cartenoid) that is responsible for a carrot’s vibrant orange colour.

Do carrots really affect your skin colour?

As per basic biology, once a beta-carotene containing food like carrot is digested, cells break it down into two molecules of vitamin A (also known as retinol). This vitamin A is then used in various critical bodily functions such as vision, reproduction, immunity and growth.

But our body is in full control of this entire process of conversion of beta-carotene into vitamin A. Which is why, based on what our body needs, our body convert the beta-carotene accordingly- like slowing it down or stopping the conversion process into vitamin A entirely.

All the extra beta-carotene is then stored in the liver, fat tissue, excreted, or removed via sweat glands in the outer layer of the skin. This is when the orange skin “tan” can possibly happen. And if that happens, then it is called carotenoderma.

Carotenoderma gives your skin a yellow/orange pigment that is not the same colour you would turn from a sun tan. It is concentrated in the palms of the hands, the soles of the feet and smile lines near the nose.

Beta-carotene is also found in parsley, basil, chives, chilli powder, sun-dried tomatoes and some dietary supplements.

As per experts, consuming few carrots then and now won’t make any difference to your skin colour (if they can at all).

No high quality trials have been conducted to test the relationship between number of carrots eaten per day and skin colour changes or other outcomes.

Experts say rice water has the ability to make hair shinier, strengthen strands, and encourage hair growth. Here are some benefits of using rice water regularly on your hair.

Regular use of rice water improves elasticity, and texture of hair and reduces friction, hence keeping hair frizz-free. To detangle hair, use rice water as a spray.

Rice water can also be used as a shampoo, which will provide more nutrients to your scalp than a shampoo as it comes without chemicals and preservatives.

Rice water likely contains many of the same nutrients as whole rice and therefore could offer some cosmetic benefits to hair, potentially improving things such as shine and smoothness.

Rice contains inositol, also known as vitamin B8, and there is some science indicating that rice water may support healthy hair growth.

Rice is also loaded with amino acids, which are the building blocks of protein, including keratin, the primary protein that makes up our hair. That’s why rice water has the potential to be a good strengthening treatment too.

Antioxidants present in rice water protect hair from oxidative stress caused by exposure to the sun and pollution, keeping hair nourished for a long time.

Do not push yourself to do advanced yoga poses in the beginning, focus on learning the basics first. If you push beyond your boundaries, it will not only become hard for you to do yoga regularly but you might also injure yourself.

Breathing the right way is as important as holding the pose right in yoga. Focusing on the breath in yoga has many benefits. When breath and movement synchronize, the magic in yoga begins. The mind becomes quiet and you experience peace.

Warming up means introducing the body gently to what you want from it. You should always warm up by doing the simpler poses first and slowly build to the more advanced poses. This reduces the chance of overstretching because the body is prepared.

In the cool-down portion of a class, you take the opportunity to balance what you have done. When you run back to your normal day after a strong practice, your nervous system is most likely overstimulated and you may end up feeling scattered and nervous.

Having too much food or fluids in your belly before doing yoga will make you uncomfortable doing asanas and also slow down or even prevent you from performing certain asanas.

When you perform strength-building poses without core engagement, you put undue pressure on your lower back and hips and create discomfort, pain, and injury.
