In this study, WalletHub drew upon the findings of “happiness” research to find out which is the happiest state in the country, based on three factors - emotional & physical well-being, work environment, and community & environment.
Utah secures the top spot in the rankings as the happiest state, boasting a total score of 69.79. The state ranked first in work environment and community & environment.
Hawaii ranks second on the list with a total score of 66.42. The state ranked first in emotional & physical well-being.
The mid-Atlantic state of Maryland is the third-happiest state of the US with a total score of 64.62. It ranked fourth in work environment.
Minnesota is the fourth-happiest state in the country with a total score of 62.82. It ranked third in work environment.
New Jersey ranks fifth on the list with an overall score of 61.98. The state ranked third in emotional & physical well-being.
Connecticut ranks sixth on the list with an overall score of 60.53. The state ranked sixth in emotional & physical well-being and eighth in community & environment.
West Virginia is the most unhappy state in the US with an overall score of 35.08. It is also one of the US states with most share of adult depression.
