An Airbnb guest refused to vacate a Los Angeles property even after staying there for six months and extending her stay by 18 months. The tenant, Elizabeth Hirschhorn was living at Sascha Jovanovic's residence.

Jovanovic, a dentist, lives in a house situated in the Crestwood Hills neighbourhood and rented the guest house on Airbnb. He has rented the house in the past, which is part of his main residence and has been rated five stars by previous Airbnb guests.

What started as a normal lease agreement between a host and a tenant turned ugly after Elizabeth refused to vacate after her lease ended.

The host filed a lawsuit, to which the tenant filed a countersuit in Los Angeles Superior Court, alleging the host should pay her back all the money she paid him. The judge has ruled that the host cannot evict the guest.

What is the entire case?

In his lawsuit filed in June, Jovanovic alleges Hirschhorn rented the Airbnb from 13 September 2021 to 19 March 2023 and he extended the rental by 24 days for no cost to allow Hirschhorn to find new housing. Jovanovic says he did not extend the rental agreement beyond 12 April 2022.

After a leak in the guest house, Jovanovic sent mould inspectors to check on the unit on 13 April 2022, but Hirschhorn refused to let him in. He alleges she continued to refuse the inspection and even called the police.

Meanwhile, Airbnb also confirmed that Hirschhorn’s rental period had ended and that she was violating the agreement.

Since the suit has been filed, Hirschhorn has stayed another 115 days in the house and also filed a countersuit in September. She alleges that Jovanovic harassed her and tried to intimidate and coerce her to leave the property. She further alleges the conditions in the house made her ill, saying there was water leaking and mould growth everywhere.

‘I tried to be a good host’: Jovanovic

The grief-stricken dentist and property owner said, “I tried to be a kind host. I had no idea she would become what she has become.” He added, “I can never go into my home and know that I’m safe when a potentially hostile person is living there, I’m thinking about it at all times."

On the other hand, Hirschhorn’s lawyer accused Jovanovic of renting out “an illegal bootleg unit”, which violated the code due to which she is not liable to pay any rent.

As of now, Hirschhorn owed Jovanovic $42,840 for the days she had overstayed. The case is still going on in the court and both the parties haven’t reached at any solution.

Hydrilla, an invasive aquatic plant which can multiply itself in various ways, has now been found in Michigan, US, for the first time. The plant was found by the Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy in two small populations in private ponds on residential properties in Berrien Springs in Southwest Michigan.

It was discovered in small patches during routine monitoring for another invasive plant called Parrot Feather, which was found in the pond in 2020.

Both species, Hydrilla and Parrot Feather, are prohibited in Michigan, meaning it is unlawful to sell, posses or import them into the state. Also, both are on Michigan’s invasive species watch list due to their potential environmental threat.

What are invasive species and how?

In terms of biology, invasive species are an introduced species to an environment that become overpopulated and harm its new environment. They are also sometimes called alien species. These species adversely affect habitats and bioregions, causing ecological and environmental damage.

Hydrilla is also an invasive species that has several ways of reproducing, allowing it to spread rapidly, and often outperforming native plants. They can quickly damage single-species infestations and even their small fragments develop into new plants. Hence, it becomes very easy for hydrilla to disperse through water or attach to ornamental plants sold for water gardens.

“It’s not clear how either plant made its way to this pond, but seeds or fragments of the invasive plants may have been attached to ornamental plants installed in past years,” said Bill Keiper, EGLE aquatic biologist.

A team of scientists will now try to determine the origin of hydrilla.

Why should you be concerned?

Hydrilla can grow in both low and high-quality waters and has been found in lakes, rivers, reservoirs, wetlands, ponds and streams. Plants are generally rooted in sediment in water depths up to 25 feet and remain submerged with long leaved-steams floating near the surface. Because it outcompetes native plants, it can quickly fill a lake or pond, choking off recreational access.

Though hydrilla can be treated with herbicide, it is difficult to eradicate because tubers and turions can persist in the sediment for years, and plants can reproduce from even small fragments.

How to identify a hydrilla?

Look for long, slender stems floating near the water surface. Check for these characteristics:

- Pointed, bright green leaves about 5/8 inch long with small teeth on the edges.

- Leaves growing around the stem, generally in whorls of five, but they can range from four to eight.

- Tiny, floating white flowers visible in late summer to fall.

- Small, white to yellowish, potato-like tubers attached to the roots.

Hydrilla: World's most invasive aquatic plant found in Michigan for the first time

The American space agency, NASA is planning to send a high-tech spacecraft called Psyche to an asteroid of the same name, 16 Psyche. It will be a first-of-its-kind mission to study a metal-rich asteroid, which aims to help scientists learn more about the formation of rocky bodies in our solar system.

The launch of the mission will take place on Thursday (Oct 12) when NASA’s Psyche spacecraft will take off from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida and travel 2.2 billion miles.

Here is everything to know about NASA’s Psyche asteroid mission:

Aim of NASA’s Psyche asteroid mission

As per the data obtained from Earth-based radar and optical telescopes, scientists concluded that the asteroid Psyche could be part of the metal-rich interior of a planetesimal, a building block of a rocky planet that never formed. The rock might have collided with other large bodies during its early formation and lost its outer rocky shell.

So exploring Psyche could provide information into the history of violent collisions and accumulation of matter that created planets.

The Psyche asteroid mission is a collaboration of NASA and Arizona State University (ASU). The principal investigator of the mission, Lindy Elkins Tanton, is based at ASU.

How Psyche’s study will be different from other objects in the solar system?

Other solar system bodies like Mars, Venus, and Earth are comprised of iron oxides but Psyche’s surface doesn’t seem to feature much of these chemical compounds. This suggests that the asteroid’s history differs from standard stories of planetary formation.

If the asteroid proves to be leftover core material from a planetary building block, scientists will learn how its history resembles and diverges from that of the rocky planets. And if scientists discover that Psyche is not an exposed core, it may prove to be a never-before-seen kind of primordial solar system object.

Australia is all set to build the world’s tallest wooden tower in its western state of Perth. The 50-storey building will be based on a hybrid design consisting of 42 per cent timber and the rest reinforced concrete.

This is the second such timber-concrete hybrid building in Australia, a move towards making sustainable and green buildings. The newly proposed hybrid tower will be 191.2 metres tall (627 foot) and will be constructed in Southern Perth with about 200 apartments.

On Thursday, Perth’s Metro Inner-South Joint Development Assessment Panel (JDAP) approved Grange Development’s proposal for the skyscraper, currently dubbed the C6 building. It will be twice as high as the current record holder - Ascent Tower in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

World’s tallest wooden building, a new leap towards sustainable construction

The proposed structure will be constructed in Southern Perth at Charles Street. The building will also be taller than another to-be-unveiled Atlassian Headquarters in Sydney.

Like Atlassian, the proposed C6 tower will combine laminated timber beams with a steel exoskeleton to support the structure.

The building will contain more than 200 apartments and will be Western Australia’s first carbon-negative residential building, as per Grange Development.

“The intent of C6 has always been, at its core, a straightforward proposition,” Grange Development’s director, James Dibble, said in a press release. “Our aspiration with C6 is to shift the focus towards a more climate-conscious approach.”

The tower will use 7,400 cubic meters (over 260,000 cubic feet) of timber harvested from 600 trees, according to Grange.

“We can’t grow concrete,” Dibble said in a proposal submitted to Perth authorities, calling the plan “a new open-sourced blueprint that utilizes hybrid construction methodology to offset the carbon within our built environment, which is the single biggest contributor to climate change.”

The construction of such multi-storey green buildings will try to solve two problems at once - the climate crises and housing crises, said Dibble.

Apart from using timber, Grange’s plan also includes green features such as a rooftop garden, an urban farm and resident access to 80 new fully-electric Tesla Model 3s.

Cement, used in construction emits a major chunk of CO2 emissions, so replacing it with biomaterial like timber will reduce the environmental impact of the building significantly.

World’s tallest wooden building, a new leap towards sustainable construction The proposed structure will be constructed in Southern Perth at Charles Street. The building will also be taller than another to-be-unveiled Atlassian Headquarters in Sydney. For the first time in the history of American politics, the speaker of the House of Representatives has been removed from his office through a vote. The House on Tuesday voted 216-210 to oust Republican speaker Kevin McCarthy, with a handful of Republicans joining Democrats to remove him.

The move came after the party’s infighting almost led to a government shutdown last week. It was Matt Gaetz, a far-right Republican and Trump loyalist, who pushed the House to topple McCarthy as speaker. McCarthy later told the media that he would not again run for the speaker and would “continue to fight, but [maybe] in a different manner.”

He also served as the House Republican chief deputy whip from 2009 to 2011 and then as the House majority in the 104 Republican primary. He retained this position till Paul Ryan was the speaker of the House and was then elected House minority leader after Ryan’s retirement.

A newly-made road in India’s Uttar Pradesh state was dug up and destroyed allegedly by a local MLA’s aide after the contractor refused to pay “goonda tax”. The incident took place in Uttar Pradesh’s Shahjahanpur district, where a group of people, claiming to be local MLA’s associates destroyed a 7-km road using JCB, assaulted workers and set machines on fire.

The word “goonda” is often used in the Indian subcontinent to refer to a hired goon or criminal. ‘Goonda tax’ refers to undue commission or extortion money under the claims of providing protection. The practice of collecting of “goonda tax” is a prominent problem in parts of Uttar Pradesh.

In April this year, Uttar Pradesh’s Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath claimed that his government has improved law and order in the state, eliminating all kinds of goons and criminals who extort or harass people, like street vendors for ‘goonda tax’.

But there are still few cases of illegal commissions here and there in the state, and the recent incident highlights this persistent problem.

Gorakhpur-based contractor Shakuntala Singh said that it was Jagveer Singh, who identifies himself as "the local MLA's representative", who obstructed the construction and damaged public property.

A cop, on condition of anonymity, said that "main accused Singh is indeed often seen with the MLA".

The policeman added, "The budget for the road construction was Rs 12 crore and a local politician was allegedly demanding a hefty commission for it." Jagveer Singh and 15-20 unidentified individuals were booked for Prevention of Damage to Public Property Act and other relevant sections of the IPC.

The District Magistrate (DM) on Wednesday initiated an inquiry in the case and assures action against accused involved. He said, “We won’t tolerate such activities. An FIR has been filed and three people have so far been arrested, the key accused, Jagveer, is still at large.”

India: Local MLA's aide digs up newly-made road in UP as contractor refuses to pay 'goonda tax'

An Indian High Court stated in the latest proceedings that a Hindu marriage is not valid without the ‘saat pheras’ ceremony and other rituals. The Allahabad High Court said in reply to a case in which a man claimed that his estranged wife had entered into a second marriage without divorcing him first.

With this, the bench of Justice Sanjay Kumar Singh allowed a petition filed by one Smriti Singh challenging the entire proceedings of a complaint filed against her by her husband under IPC Sections 494 (Bigamy) and 109 (Punishment of abetment).

Hindu marriage invalid unless ‘saat pheras’ are performed

The term 'Saptapadi' or 'saat pheras' is derived from Sanskrit and translates to 'seven steps'. In Hindu marriage, the bride and groom complete seven full circles, walking clockwise around the sacred fire, or 'agni', to signify the seven principles and vows they make to each other. Each of these circles is referred to as a 'phera' and is one of the most important rituals of a Hindu wedding.

Section 7 of the Hindu Marriage Act, 1955 indicates that a Hindu marriage may be solemnised following the customary rites and ceremonies of either party.

What was the case?

The petitioner Smriti Singh married Satyam Singh in 2017. Due to strained relations, she left her in-laws' home and filed an FIR alleging harassment for dowry. Subsequent to an investigation, the police filed a charge sheet against the husband and his family.

Later, Satyam submitted an application to higher-ranking police officials, accusing his wife of bigamy. This claim was thoroughly investigated by the Circle Officer of Sadar, Mirzapur, and the allegations against Smriti were found to be unfounded.

Satyam later filed a complaint on 20 September 2021, alleging that his wife had entered into a second marriage.

Upon reviewing a petition filed by Smriti Singh, Justice Sanjay Kumar Singh noted, "It is well established that the term 'solemnise' implies, in the context of marriage... It cannot be considered solemnised unless the marriage is performed with these proper ceremonies and due form."

While nullifying the summoning order, the court stated, "There is no specific allegation concerning the 'Saptapadi' in the complaint or in the statements submitted before the court; therefore, this court believes that no prima-facie offence has been established against the applicant, as the claim of a second marriage lacks supporting evidence."

Hindu marriage not valid without 'saat pheras': Allahabad High Court

A professor in Texas, US shared her ordeal of using Ozempic, a drug used by type 2 diabetes patients to regulate their glucose levels, but more widely known for its weight loss properties. Many non-diabetic people in the US have been using Ozempic for its miraculously weight-reducing effects, but at what cost? Many doctors and experts have flagged some serious side effects of using this drug.

The story of Professor Maria E Rosas talks about these horrifying side effects of using Ozempic. Rosas, a long-time type 2 diabetes patient, penned down her experience of using Ozempic in Newsweek.

From mild depression to falling ‘pieces of skin’, Rosas experience was no less than a nightmare.

Ozempic: Near-death experience with miraculous drug

Rosas was prescribed the once-a-week drug for her type 2 diabetes in the hope that it could relieve her from taking multiple medications twice a day.

She started using Ozempic in April 2023, and the first week went quite well. She felt mild depression but improved quickly, and her blood glucose levels were controlled.

Soon, she started experiencing excruciating pain in her back, shoulders, and arms, which she thought was post-Covid neuropathy pain.

Later, in August, an even worse burning pain affected her genital area and buttocks, leaving her with charred skin.

“I noticed ‘pieces’ of skin on my toilet seat and on the tissue paper when I cleaned [my genital] area,” Rosas revealed.

"I panicked because I knew that these adverse effects were not normal," Rosas said.

Feeling alarmed and in immense pain, Rosas contacted her doctor, who promptly advised discontinuing Ozempic, citing the drug’s less-talked-about side effects of rashes, itching, or hives.

Rosas didn't stop at that; she reported her situation to Ozempic's customer service and the FDA while researching online to find others facing similar issues. The side effects, as she discovered, were not isolated incidents but part of a pattern of adverse reactions.

After 20 days, when Rosas discontinued using Ozempic, she noticed she had started to heal, though she still felt a burning sensation. "After completely discontinuing the medication, Rosas is slowly healing, but the pain lingers." It still hurts when I have to urinate or defecate, and it often starts peeling again because of the friction," she wrote.

“Ozempic helped me but I thought I was going to die at one point, because of what was happening to my body.” Despite the drug’s effectiveness, Rosas advises against Ozempic due to its distressing side effects.

Rosas didn't stop at that; she reported her situation to Ozempic's customer service and the FDA while researching online to find others facing similar issues. The side effects, as she discovered, were not isolated incidents but part of a pattern of adverse reactions. It still hurts when I have to urinate or defecate, and it often starts peeling again because of the friction," she wrote. “Ozempic helped me but I thought I was going to die at one point, because of what was happening to my body.” Despite the drug’s effectiveness, Rosas advises against Ozempic due to its distressing side effects.
