The House of Representatives in Australia on Wednesday (Nov 27) cleared the bill which bans children, below the age of 16, from accessing social media platforms.

The first-of-its-kind legislation has now been left to the Senate to be made into a law.

The bill, which makes social media platforms like TikTok, Facebook, Snapchat, Reddit, X and Instagram liable for fines of nearly 50 million Australian dollars ($33 million) if a systemic failure is found on their side in preventing young children from creating accounts on these platforms, was supported by major parties.

The legislation was passed by 102 to 13 votes. If the bill turns into a law, one year would be given to the platforms to make a plan on how they will implement the age restrictions before any kind of penalties are enforced on them.

It has also been argued by critics that the ban would isolate children and they would be deprived of social media's positive aspects and will push them to the dark web.

They added that the children will become reluctant to report the harms of social media. Meanwhile, independent lawmaker Zoe Daniel said the legislation would “make zero difference to the harms that are inherent to social media.”

“The true object of this legislation is not to make social media safe by design, but to make parents and voters feel like the government is doing something about it,” Daniel said while speaking at the Parliament.

What led to the blood-like liquid? According to several residents, the illegal dumping of expired paint into the sewage system caused the situation. However, the claim was dismissed by the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWS&SB). Watch: Delhi: Pollution Plagues Numerous North Indian Cities, Delhi's AQI Improves Slightly "The incident shows how there is no monitoring of industrial waste being disposed of in the area. Pollution Control Board or GHMC has to initiate stringent measures against dumping this wastage in the street. There has to be a proper supervision of waste management in the vicinity," said K Lakshman, who is a resident of Jeedimetla, while speaking to the Times of India (TOI). Explaining the situation, speaking to the outlet, a water board official from the Quthbullapur division said, "There have been no prior reports of such coloured water flowing from the local sewer network. This suggests that the chemical wastage was likely dumped directly onto the streets." As per the reports, local people said that waste was previously dumped by the industries in the area's already polluted river. (With inputs from agencies)

Udaipur Violence News: Violent clashes and stone pelting broke out in the north Indian city of Udaipur on Monday (Nov 26) after BJP MLA Vishvaraj Singh Mewar was coronated as the 77th Maharana of Mewar on Monday (Nov 25). The clashes started after the BJP MLA and his supporters were denied entry inside the palace in the state of Rajasthan because of a stand-off with his cousin Dr Lakshay Raj Singh Mewar, who along with the Maharana's uncle Shreeji Arvind Singh Mewar manage the trust which now runs the palace. Singh was anointed the titular head after his father Mahendra Singh Mewar died earlier this month. The row started after 10 pm as the supporters of the MLA started throwing stones and also made attempts to get inside the gates of the palace. As tensions escalated, others started retaliating inside the palace and stone pelting broke out from the two sides. In the violent brawl, three people suffered injuries as the police made attempts to control the mob. #WATCH | Udaipur, Rajasthan: BJP MLA from Rajsamand and newly crowned Maharana of Mewar, Vishvaraj Singh Mewar and his supporters camp outside the City palace after they were stopped from entering the palace.
