On Tuesday (Nov 26), the incumbent chief minister of Maharashtra Eknath Shinde submitted his resignation to Governor CP Radhakrishnan at Raj Bhavan in the Indian city of Mumbai.

The resignation was tendered by Shinde in the presence of Deputy CMs Ajit Pawar and Devendra Fadnavis.

In the Maharashtra assembly elections, the Mahayuti alliance which consists of NCP, Shiv Sena and BJP clinched a massive victory over the Maha Vikas Agadi.

To show their support for Shinde, Sena leaders had gathered outside his official bungalow Varsha.

However, Sena chief Shinde said on X, "After the great victory of the Mahayuti alliance, our government will be formed once again in the state. As a grand alliance, we contested the election together and are still together today."

Meanwhile, a BJP leader said that the party will not rush into the announcement of the chief ministerial candidate till the distribution of portfolios in the new government of Maharashtra is finalised.

Archaeologists made a stunning discovery of the world's oldest known alphabetic writing etched on the finger-length clay cylinders found in excavation of a tomb in Syria.

The writing was found to be dated to around 2400 BC by researchers at Johns Hopkins University in the United States.

The findings were presented at the American Society of Overseas Research's annual meeting. “Alphabetic writing changed the way people lived, how they thought, how they communicated,” said archaeologist Glenn Schwartz, who was behind the discovery of the clay cylinder.

Alphabets revolutionised language, say experts

According to the experts, this form of writing is likely to have revolutionised language because it was accessible to people who were beyond the social elite and royalty.

Based on small perforations that were on the clay cylinders, scientists said that it most probably tethered to another object.

“Maybe they detail the contents of a vessel, or maybe where the vessel came from, or who it belonged to,” explained Dr Schwartz.

“Without a means to translate the writing, we can only speculate," he added. The researchers used carbon dating techniques to confirm that the tombs, the artefacts, and the writing all dated back to 2400 BC.

“Previously, scholars thought the alphabet was invented in or around Egypt sometime after 1900 BCE,” said Dr Schwartz.

At a single-day Senate committee, an advocate representing major social media platforms said that the Australian government should delay the laws which will ban children under the age of 16 from accessing the sites by at least one year, reported AP news agency.

The advocate representing social media platforms like X, Facebook, Instagram and TikTok was the managing director of Digital Industry Group Inc. Sunita Bose.

Bose was speaking at the hearing into the first legislation of the world, which was introduced last week by the Australian parliament.

She added that the parliament needs to first wait for the age assurance technologies' government-commissioned evaluation, which will be completed in June.

“Parliament is asked to pass a bill this week without knowing how it will work,” Bose was quoted as saying by the agency.

As per the legislation, a fine of up to 50 million Australian dollars ($33 million) will be imposed on platforms for their systemic failure in preventing children from making their accounts on them.

During the hearing, Australia's Communications Minister Michelle Rowland said that she was looking forward to reading the assessment of the Senate committee regarding the proposed law.

Speaking in the Parliament, Rowland said that the proposed law "supports parents to say 'no'" to children who wish to use social media. "Social media in its current form is not a safe product for them," she added

"Access to social media does not have to be the defining feature of growing up. There is more to life than constant notifications, endless scrolling, and pressure to conform to the false and unrealistic perfectionism that can be served up by influencers," the minister said.

To this, Bose replied that "this is an area where the industry needs to improve."

Bose said that the ban carries the risk of pushing children into isolation and driving them to “darker, less safe online spaces,” which “could compromise the safety of young people.”

"That's an outrageous statement. You're trying to protect the big tech giants," said Henderson.

Bose argued that the algorithms of social media platforms help protect young children from wrongful content, including nudity.

"We need to see continued investment in algorithms and ensure that they do a better job at addressing harmful content," said Bose.

Social media platforms ask Australia to delay its ban on children below 16 by one year

The Indian Supreme Court on Monday (Nov. 24) rejected pleas which challenged the inclusion of words 'secular' and 'socialist' in the Preamble of the Constitution under the 42nd Amendment during the Emergency.

Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna, while reading out the order, said that Article 368 of the Constitution grants amending power to the Parliament which also extends to the Preamble.

The bench comprising CJI Khanna and Justice PV Sanjay Kumar reaffirmed the “incontrovertible” power of the Parliament to carry out amendments in the Constitution under Article 368 if the amendments do not violate its basic structure.

The bench added that the addition of terms cannot be invalidated on the grounds that the original adoption date of November 26, 1949, has been retained by the Preamble.

“The fact that the Constitution was adopted and actively given to themselves by the people of India on 26th of November 1949, does not make any difference. The date of the adoption would not curtail or restrict the power under Article 368 of the Constitution,” said the CJI, while reading out the judgement.

On November 22, while reserving its order, the bench said that there has been a judicial review of the 42nd Amendment and the decisions taken by the Parliament during that time cannot be nullified.

“The way we understand socialism in India is very different from the way other academics may understand. In our context, socialism primarily means welfare state. That’s all. It has never prevented the government. There’s this private sector which is thriving, doing well… The word socialism used over here is in a different context that the State must ensure it’s a welfare state and that there should be equality of opportunity. That’s done through so many Articles. Then why worry about that score? Why go into all that?” said the bench.

Here's what the petitioners said

It was argued by the petitioners that the matter needed consideration by a large bench, however, the judges disagreed.

The petitioners said that “when this amendment was brought in, we were never heard. It was the Emergency (period)”.

The petitions were filed by social worker Balram Singh, advocate Ashwini Upadhyay and former BJP parliamentarian Subramanian Swamy, who claimed that the original vision of the framers of the Constitution was distorted by the 42nd Amendment.

It was argued that the terms “socialist” and “secular” were deliberately excluded by the framers during Constituent Assembly debates.

The legitimacy of the 1976 Parliament, which was operating in the Emergency and had an extended tenure, was also questioned by the petitioners.

Advocate Vishnu Shankar Jain, who was representing Singh, said, “The tenure of the Lok Sabha was extended to address emergency requirements, not to amend the Constitution. Adding these words without public consultation distorted the original intent of the framers.”

India's former prime minister Indira Gandhi had declared an Emergency from June 25, 1975, to March 21, 1977, during which the 42nd Amendment to the Constitution was adopted by the Parliament.

Here's what the petitioners said It was argued by the petitioners that the matter needed consideration by a large bench, however, the judges disagreed. The petitioners said that “when this amendment was brought in, we were never heard. It was the Emergency (period)”. Watch: India-China: Beijing And New Delhi Signal Need For Normalised Ties The petitions were filed by social worker Balram Singh, advocate Ashwini Upadhyay and former BJP parliamentarian Subramanian Swamy, who claimed that the original vision of the framers of the Constitution was distorted by the 42nd Amendment. Adding these words without public consultation distorted the original intent of the framers.” India's former prime minister Indira Gandhi had declared an Emergency from June 25, 1975, to March 21, 1977, during which the 42nd Amendment to the Constitution was adopted by the Parliament. In another case of fatality in cosmetic surgery, a Chinese woman died 10 days after she underwent multiple laser treatments to remove her birthmarks and spots.

The 27-year-old woman, whose surname is Liu, lived in Tianjin, which is a northern city in China.

According to the woman's husband, she had various spots on her body and a lot of them were large in size and dark in colour.

The doctors had diagnosed Liu with neurofibromatosis and cafe-au-lait spots which made it important for her to go through multiple freckle removal procedures.

The woman went through nine laser treatments at Jinmen Dermatology Hospital in Tianjin and spent more than 100,000 yuan (US$14,000) for the same.

However, the doctors informed the woman that her symptoms had started worsening after the procedures.

It was revealed by the woman's mother that Liu had stopped the treatment once because of severe pain which was caused by the anaesthetic's uneven application, as per the South China Morning Post.

While going through her 10th procedure on October 21, Liu faced dizziness after doctors applied anaesthetic cream.

Even though the cream was quickly removed by the doctors, the woman went into shock, faced convulsions and experienced cardiac arrest.

The doctors called emergency services and Liu was shifted to another hospital where she succumbed to her medical condition after 10 days.

It was reported by the emergency donors that Liu died after she suffered complications because of excessive intracranial pressure.

However, the husband of Liu suspected that the allergic reaction was triggered by an excessive amount of anaesthetic which led to her death.

The procedures were defended by the staff at Jinmen Dermatology Hospital who stated that the anaesthetic cream was applied following the standard protocols and the allergy tests were made available after request.

Hospital director Zhang expressed regret for the death of Liu and said, “We will take full responsibility if found at fault.”

Here's how netizens reacted to the incident

The incident went viral on Chinese social media Weibo where it garnered 58 million views.

“If Liu hadn’t undergone the surgery, this tragedy might not have happened. Compared to health, beauty is insignificant," commented one user.

“Café-au-lait spots do not just affect looks; they can significantly impact one’s mental health. Liu wasn’t wrong to seek treatment; the issue lies with the hospital," wrote another user.

“Private clinics often lack safety and reliability. Surgeries should be performed in reputable public hospitals," said a third user.
