<p>The Brazilian Federal Police rescued a puma cub set for illegal trade south of Rio de Janeiro on Thursday (September 14).</p>

<p>Videos and photographs shared by Brazilian federal forces showed the moment the young puma was rescued from the facility where it was held in illegal captivity. According to authorities, the suspects planned to sell him for 20,000 reais (4,107 U.S. dollars).</p>

<p>With the aim of reintegrating the animal into the wild, the puma was sent to the Wild Animal Examination Centre in Seropedica, Rio de Janeiro state, for analysis and rehabilitation.</p>

<p>Investigations are on their way to identify those responsible and to find out the origin of the animal.</p>

<p>US President Joe Biden, on Friday (September 15), said that the United States would remain committed to supporting Iranians, a year after Mahsa Amini's death triggered massive demonstrations, as Washington revealed fresh sanctions against "egregious" rights abusers.</p>

<p>Biden released a statement saying, "Today—as we remember Mahsa’s tragic death—we reaffirm our commitment to the courageous people of Iran who are carrying on her mission. They are inspiring the world with their resilience and resolve. And together with our allies and partners, we stand with them."</p>

<p>"Iranians alone will determine the fate of their country, but, the United States remains committed to standing with them, including providing tools to support Iranians' ability to advocate for their own future," Biden added.</p>

<p>He then said that the United States was "announcing additional sanctions targeting some of Iran's most egregious human rights abusers" to mark Mahsa Amini's death anniversary.</p>

<h2><strong>US, UK issue sanctions</strong></h2>

<p>The United States and Britain imposed sanctions on Iran on Friday (September 15) ahead of Amini's death anniversary.</p>

<p>"Mahsa’s tragic and senseless death in the custody of Iran’s so-called 'Morality Police' sparked demonstrations across Iran that were met with unspeakable violence, mass arrests, systemic internet disruptions and censorship by the Iranian regime," U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken said in a statement.</p>

<p>"We will continue to take appropriate action, alongside our international partners, to hold accountable those who suppress Iranians’ exercise of human rights," he said, adding that Canada, Australia, and other partners were also imposing sanctions this week.</p>

<p>In a separate statement, the US Treasury Department said that it imposed sanctions on more than two dozen people and entities, that it said were linked to Iran's "violent suppression" of protests in the wake of Amini's death and its crackdown on dissenting voices and restrictions on the internet.</p>

<p>The department said that the action targets 29 people and groups, including 18 key members of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and Iran's Law Enforcement Forces (LEF), as well as the head of Iran's prison organisations. They also target officials linked to Iran's internet blockade and several media outlets.</p>

<p>The sanctions target LEF spokesperson Saeed Montazerolmehdi, multiple LEF and IRGC commanders, and Iran’s Prisons Organization chief Gholamali Mohammadi.</p>

<p>Douran Software Technologies CEO Alireza Abedinejad as well as state-controlled media organizations Press TV, Tasnim News Agency and Fars News were also among the ones sanctioned.</p>

<p>"The United States ... will continue to take collective action against those who suppress Iranians’ exercise of their human rights," the Treasury's Under Secretary for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence, Brian Nelson, said in the statement.</p>

<p>On the other hand, the UK separately announced its sanctions that targeted senior Iranian decision-makers implementing Tehran's compulsory hijab law, including Iran's minister for culture and Islamic guidance, his deputy, the mayor of Tehran and an Iranian police spokesman.</p>

<p>Amini died last year on September 16, at the age of 22, after she was arrested in Tehran for allegedly violating the Islamic Republic's strict dress code for women.</p>

US imposes new sanctions on Iran, hails protesters a year after Mahsa Amini's death

<p>Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been named as the leader with the highest approval rating globally by a survey following the successful conclusion of the G20 Summit.</p>

<p>The survey conducted by Morning Consult, which puts out weekly approval ratings of world leaders, said that 76 per cent of people approve of PM Modi’s leadership, while 18 per cent disapprove and six per cent did not give any opinion.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Switzerland President Alain Berset has the second highest rating with 64 per cent people approving his leadership and 26 per cent disapproving.</p>

<p>Third place is grabbed by Mexico President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador with an approval rating of 61 per cent.</p>

<p>PM Modi has constantly topped the survey, with his approval rating largely wavering in the 70s.</p>

<p>United States President Joe Biden held a 40 per cent approval, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau was on 37 per cent, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak's ratings stood at 27 per cent, and French President Emmanuel Macron stood at a rating of 24 per cent.</p>

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi secures highest approval rating among global leaders

<p>A zoo in Scotland is all set to adopt an Asiatic black bear who suffered severe trauma in Russian-occupied Ukraine.</p>

<p>The Five Sisters Zoo in Scotland, in a press release on Tuesday, said that it will not only provide a new home to the bear but will also continue to support his recovery.</p>

<p>The bear was rescued from an abandoned zoo on the outskirts of Yampil in Donetsk Oblast, when Ukrainian forces freed the village in October 2022, as per The Kyiv Independent.</p>

<p>The rescuers at the scene said that the 12-year-old bear was one of the few left alive. He was starving, filthy, and close to death.</p>

<p>After being rescued, he was named Yampil, after the village where he was found.</p>

<p>The 34-year-old convicted murderer, Danelo Cavalcante, who escaped from a Pennsylvania jail was recaptured on Wednesday (September 13) putting an end to a two-week-long manhunt that had left residents in the suburbs west of Philadelphia on edge, as per local media reports.&nbsp;</p>

<p>A Pennsylvania State Police official said that a 4-year-old dog, named Yoda, bit Cavalcante and helped the law enforcement authorities in capturing him.</p>

<p>According to ABC news, Cavalcante was captured at 8:14 am on Wednesday (September 13) and was found hiding near a large pile of logs behind a John Deere store in South Coventry Township, which was about 30 miles from a county-run prison where he escaped 14 days ago.</p>

<p>"Today is a great day in Chester County. Our nightmare is finally over and the good guys won," Chester County District Attorney Deb Ryan said at a news conference.</p>

<p>During the press briefing, Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro revealed that Cavalcante was "apprehended with no shots fired" shortly after 08:00 local time.</p>

<p>He also appreciated the "extraordinary" efforts by law enforcement and "a tremendous assist from members of the public" for Cavalcante's capture.</p>

<p>"They were able to move in very quietly. They had the element of surprise. Cavalcante did not realize he was surrounded until that had occurred," said Lt. Col. George Bivens of the Pennsylvania State Police.</p>

<p>"They actually gave him verbal commands. He refused the verbal commands. He attempted to crawl away," 6abc quoted Supervisory Deputy Robert Clark of the US&nbsp;Marshals as saying.</p>

<p>The dog, a four-year-old Belgian Malinois named Yoda, "subdued" Cavalcante as he attempted to make his escape, leaving him with a bleeding scalp wound.</p>

<p>"I think he was in pain at that point," Clark said. "He was probably in excruciating pain."</p>

<h2><strong>Cavalcante's escape</strong></h2>

<p>It was on August 31 that Cavalcante, who measures just five feet (1.52 meters) tall, managed to escape the prison, in a rather daring manner.&nbsp;</p>

<p>After the escape, the police officials released the footage of Cavalcante's stunt where he could be seen crab-walking up between two walls separated by a 5 ft (1.5m) hallway, in broad daylight</p>

<p>At the time of the escape, just before 9: 00 a.m. local time, there was a corrections officer in the observation tower. But the officer apparently failed to monitor the security feed.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Cavalcante was sentenced to life imprisonment in July after being found guilty of brutally stabbing ex-girlfriend Deborah Brando to death in April 2021 in front of her two infants. He is also wanted for murder in Brazil.</p>

<p>The emergency services said that they were called on Thursday (September 14) that a man was left with critical wounds after being attacked by two dogs near Birmingham.</p>

<p>"Upon arrival, we found a man who had sustained multiple life-threatening injuries and was in a critical condition," said the West Midlands Ambulance Service.</p>

<p>"Unfortunately, after arrival at hospital, despite the best efforts it became clear that nothing more could be done to save him (and) he was confirmed deceased."</p>

<p>Staffordshire Police released a statement saying that a 30-year-old man was arrested on Thursday on suspicion of having dogs that were dangerously out of control.</p>

<p>"Today I have tasked ministers to bring together police and experts to firstly define the breed of dogs behind these attacks with a view to then outlawing it," the UK PM said.</p>

<p>Sunak further said that identifying the breed was extremely important in order to ensure the safety of residents.</p>

<p>"We will then ban the breed under the Dangerous Dogs Act and new laws will be in place by the end of the year," he added.</p>

<p>"These dogs are dangerous. I want to reassure the public that we will take all necessary steps to keep people safe," he said.</p>

<p>He captioned the video as, "It’s clear the American XL Bully dog is a danger to our communities. I’ve ordered urgent work to define and ban this breed so we can end these violent attacks and keep people safe."</p>

<h2><strong>11-year-old girl suffers serious wounds after being attacked by American bully XL</strong></h2>

<p>On Saturday (September 9), an 11-year-old girl was left seriously injured after she was attacked by an American bully XL and Staffordshire bull terrier crossbreed puppy.</p>

<p>The incident led Interior Minister Suella Braverman to seek "urgent advice" on whether the American bully XL breed should be banned.</p>

<p>Expressing her shock and concern, Braverman described the American XL Bully as a significant and lethal threat to communities, especially children, in a social media statement. She stressed the need for immediate action.</p>

<p>"This is appalling," she posted on X.</p>

The Kennel Club argues against breed-specific bans, saying that responsible ownership and training play a pivotal role in preventing dog-related incidents, rather than focusing solely on specific breeds.</p>

<p>The term "bully breeds" originated from their historical use in blood sports like bull baiting, characterised by their muscular build and heavier bone structure compared to pit bulls.</p>

UK PM Rishi Sunak vows action after man dies in dog attack, orders ban on American XL bully breed

<p>Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg is set to face another trial towards the end of September, said Malmo's public prosecutor on Friday (September 15), as she has been charged with "resisting arrest" at a July protest.</p>

<p>This is less than two months after she was convicted and fined for the same offence.</p>

<p>The 20-year-old climate activist was fined 1,500 Swedish crowns ($134) by a Swedish court on July 24 for not calling off a rally after being ordered by the police. After the verdict, Thunberg and other activists from 'Reclaim the Future' environmental group, had blocked the road for oil trucks in Malmo harbour and were again forcibly removed by police.</p>

<p>"The protest was unauthorised and led to traffic being blocked. The young woman refused to obey police order to leave the site," said prosector Isabel Ekberg.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"This is therefore a case of refusal to comply."</p>

<p>Hours before the July rally, Thunberg was convicted by a Swedish court and also slapped with a fine for disobeying police orders at a previous rally at the same port on 19 June.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Thunberg admitted to the Malmo district court that she had not abided by the orders from the police to relocate, but also denied criminality, citing the necessity created by the "climate crisis."&nbsp;</p>

<p>According to news agency AFP, as per the charge sheet, Thunberg "took part in a demonstration that disrupted traffic" and "refused to obey police orders to leave the site".</p>

<p>"It's correct that I was at that place on that day, and it's correct that I received an order that I didn't listen to, but I want to deny the crime," Thunberg told the court when asked about the charge against her.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Former Austrian minister Karin Kneissl moved to Russia, along with her two ponies, which she transported to the country via a Russian military plane.</p>

<p>Kneissl, in a conversation with Russia's state-owned Tass news agency, revealed that she would be moving to St Petersburg to work at the Geopolitical Observatory for Russia’s Key Issues [GORKI].</p>

<p>The think tank was set up to "help define the policies for the Russian Federation" with a focus on the Near and Middle East.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"I co-founded the Gorki centre and manage it," Tass news agency quoted Kneissl as saying. "Since there is a lot of work there and it requires a lot of attention, I cannot do this in passing. I decided to move to St. Petersburg for this work."&nbsp;</p>

<p>As per a report by Russian investigative website The Insider, Kneissl's ponies were flown to Saint Petersburg on a military aircraft last week from the Russian air base at Hmeimim in Syria.</p>

<p>"It was impossible for me to drive a lorry through Syria under the circumstances of the war," Kneissl confirmed to news agency AFP on Wednesday (September 13).</p>

<p>"Due to sanctions, there are no flights or DHL (shipping service)," Kneissl wrote on Telegram, flabbergasted that her "move has become a political issue". &nbsp;</p>

<p>In the year 2021, Kneissl joined the Board of Directors of the Russian oil giant Rosneft.</p>

<p>She stepped down from her position in May 2022 after the European Parliament passed a resolution threatening sanctions against Europeans still on the boards of major Russian companies.</p>

<p>Parts of West Maui will officially reopen to travellers in the month of October under a new wildfire emergency directive signed by Hawaii Gov. Josh Green on Friday (September 8).</p>

<p>However, non-essential travel to the western coastline of the island has been discouraged after the wildfires claimed the lives of at least 115 people in the historic town of Lahaina last month.</p>

<p>State tourism officials also initially urged travellers to stay away from Maui so that the residents and agencies could focus on emergency response efforts.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"Beginning October 8th, one month from today, all travel restrictions will end and West Maui will be open to visitors again. So people from Hawaii and around the world can resume travel to this special place and help it begin to recover economically," the governor told reporters.</p>

<p>Green, on Thursday (September 7), told a meeting of the state Council on Revenues that he expected the authorities to reopen most parts of western Maui to travellers in the month of October, exempting the fire-damaged neighbourhoods.</p>

<h2><strong>Governor urges families to share details of missing loved ones</strong></h2>

<p>Governor Green on Friday also urged families to share information about any missing loved ones and pointed out that the Maui Police Department continued to make daily progress on missing persons reports.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency) will continue to assist us with direct leases and rental assistance grants to ensure that people can stay housed for 18 months well into 2025. And these costs will be covered by federal assistance, state resources, and humanitarian aid," Greene said.</p>

<p>He also said that the administration intends to contract with three to five hotels locally to be able to lease their entire properties long-term for the recovery effort, which will serve as an additional housing safety net.</p>

<p>The wildfires in Maui were the deadliest in the United States in over a century. The fires scorched much of the historic town of Lahaina. Reuters earlier reported that over 2,200 buildings have been destroyed and another 500 been damaged by the blaze.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The officials said that three people who were wounded in the incident, have been rushed to hospital for treatment, as per news agency ANI reports.</p>

<p>The runway has been temporarily closed due to the incident forcing the diversion of flights.</p>

<p>Two Vistara and one Akasa Airlines flight were diverted towards Bangalore airport, according to the officials. An Air India flight coming from Dubai was diverted towards Ahmedabad. Also, a Vistara flight from Dehradun to Mumbai (DED-BOM) has been diverted to Goa Airport.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Five planes have landed at Surat airport whereas two flights are still hovering in the airspace, as per news agency ANI reports.</p>

<p>Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) Spokesperson confirmed that the incident was not a crash and that the aircraft had veered off the runway at Mumbai airport.</p>

Abhishek Banerjee of All India Trinamool Congress could not attend the meeting due to a summon by the Enforcement Directorate, arising out of the vendetta politics of Bharatiya Janata Party," the joint statement read.</p>
