Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Thursday (September 14), slammed the opposition's INDIA alliance calling it 'ghamandia' (arrogant). He further said that the bloc wants to destroy Sanatan Dharma and push the country back into "a thousand years' slavery".&nbsp;

While addressing a massive gathering at Bina in poll-bound Madhya Pradesh, PM Modi dubbed the INDIA bloc as an “INDI alliance” that "does not have a leader" and also denounced it for having a hidden agenda of attacking Sanatan Dharma.

"The 'ghamandia' alliance met in Mumbai recently. They have neither any policies, nor issues, nor a leader. They have a hidden agenda of attacking Sanatan Dharma which they want to destroy," he said.

"They are bent on destroying the ideologies, cultures and traditions that have kept the country and our people together for centuries," the PM added.

The Indian Prime Minister then asserted that Swami Vivekananda and Lokmanya Tilak also drew inspiration from Sanatan&nbsp;Dharma.

"The people of this INDIA alliance want to erase that 'Sanatan&nbsp;Dharma' which gave inspiration to Swami Vivekananda and Lokmanya Tilak. Today they have openly started targeting Sanatan, tomorrow they will increase the attacks on us. All 'Sanatanis' across the country and the people who love our country will have to be alert," he said.

He then said that Sanatan Dharma also inspired the Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi, and that his struggle for freedom was centred around it.&nbsp;

"Gandhi followed Sanatan Dharma all his life and his last words were, 'Hey Ram'", Modi noted.&nbsp;

This was PM Modi's first public response to DMK leader Udhayanidhi Stalin's remarks on Sanatana Dharma that courted controversy.

The son of the Tamil Nadu chief minister sparked a row on Saturday (September 2) by saying that Sanatan&nbsp;Dharma is against social justice and must be "eradicated".

He then compared it with diseases like dengue and malaria, inviting sharp criticism.

"Few things cannot be opposed; they should only be abolished. We can't oppose dengue, mosquitoes, malaria, or coronavirus, we have to eradicate them. In the same way, we have to eradicate Sanatana (Sanatan Dharma). Rather than merely opposing Sanatana, it should be eradicated," Stalin said.

His comments triggered severe backlash on social media and also invited sharp criticism from many political figures.

'INDIA alliance's agenda is to end country's ‘Sanatan’ culture', says PM Modi

An explosion in Balochistan’s Mastung district on Thursday (September 14), wounded at least 11 people, including Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) leader Hafiz Hamdullah, as per local media reports.

Mastung Assistant Commissioner Attaul Muneem said that so far, 11 people were injured in the blast, further adding that the wounded were taken to a hospital in Quetta for medical treatment, according to Pakistani news outlet Dawn.

JUI-F spokesperson Aslam Ghauri, while talking to Geo News, said that Hamdullah had sustained injuries in the incident but was in a stable condition.

“He is okay. He is injured but the situation is not critical […] The gunmen and the others accompanying him also sustained minor injuries but they are okay. There is no serious issue at the moment.”

“We still do not know if it was a suicide blast or a planted bomb,” he added. “According to the information I have received, Hamdullah sahib and two persons are injured. All are okay and the matter is not serious.”

The incident was strongly condemned by Balochistan Interim Home Minister Zubair Jamali, who then directed the authorities to submit a report.

He also instructed the district administration to provide aid to the wounded and assured that the country would utilise all the resources in order to get rid of terror elements.

Pakistan President Arif Alvi has proposed November 6 as the date of national elections in a letter to Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Sikandar Sultan Raja, on Wednesday (September 13), as per Dawn report.

President Alvi, in the letter, stated that he had dissolved the National Assembly on August 9 on the Prime Minister’s advice.

He also mentioned Article 48(5) of the Constitution, which he said “empowers and mandates” the president ‘to appoint a date not later than 90 days from the date of the dissolution, for the holding of a general election to the Assembly’.

Hence, “in terms of Article 48(5), the general election to the National Assembly should be held by the 89th day of the date of dissolution of the National Assembly, i.e. Monday, 6th day of November 2023”, the letter stated.

The president recalled in the letter that “in an endeavour to fulfil the constitutional obligations”, the chief election commissioner was invited for a meeting to plan the modalities of enforcing the constitutional objective and directive.

But in his reply, the CEC “took a contrary view that as per the scheme of the Constitution and framework of electoral laws, it was the domain of the election commission, and following the publication of last preceding census on August 7, duly notified delimitation of constituencies was in progress, a mandatory requirement stipulated by Article 51(5) of the Constitution and section 17 of the Elections Act, 2017”, Dawn quoted the letter.

He then conceded that it was the ECP’s responsibility to follow all the constitutional and legal steps defined under ‘Articles 51, 218, 219, 220 and the Elections Act, 2017’ for organising and conducting free and fair elections.

President Alvi suggested that the ECP, in “consultation with provincial governments and political parties under the relevant provisions of the Constitution and in view that some of these matters are already subjudice, may seek guidance from the superior judiciary for announcement of a single date for general election to the national and provincial assemblies”, Dawn reported.

The Supreme Court on Wednesday (September 13), declined to meddle with the Delhi government's decision to ban the manufacture, storage, sale and bursting of firecrackers in the national capital.

BJP Lok Sabha MP Manoj Tiwari told a bench of Justices AS Bopanna and MM Sundresh that a comprehensive ban has been imposed on firecrackers despite the court allowing bursting of green firecrackers.

"No, we are not going to interfere. Where the government has banned firecrackers, it means a complete ban. People's health is important. If you want to burst firecrackers, go to states where there is no ban," the bench told the counsel for Tiwari.

The counsel said his client being an MP was responsible towards his constituents and the court has itself allowed the bursting of green firecrackers.

"You should make the people understand that they should not burst firecrackers. Even you should not burst firecrackers during victory processions after elections. There are other ways of celebrating the victory," the bench told Tiwari, who is an MP from North East Delhi.

Delhi's Environment Minister Gopal Rai announced a comprehensive ban on the manufacture, storage, sale and bursting of firecrackers in India's capital city on Monday (September 11).

Addressing a press conference on Monday in the Delhi secretariat, Rai said, “Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has brought a comprehensive policy to bring down pollution levels in Delhi. The government is stepping up its preparations this year and in this sequence, the government has imposed a ban on crackers in Delhi this year.”

He further elucidated that the air quality worsens greatly, making it crucial to restrain the usage of firecrackers.

He said, “Pollution levels increase inside Delhi in winter. From January to August, the average AQI of Delhi has been quite low. AQI 45 was recorded in Delhi yesterday. But gradually in October, with the increase in winter, the atmosphere of Delhi becomes humid and particle matter starts accumulating here. In this, the pollution outside Delhi and inside Delhi makes the air here more polluted. On 23 October 2018, the Honorable Supreme Court permitted the manufacture and sale of only green crackers. But because of the increasing problem of pollution in 2019, on 1st December 2020, the NGT directed to impose a complete ban on all types of firecrackers if the AQI is in the poor and above category. Based on that, DPCC had imposed a complete ban on firecrackers in 2021. A complete ban was also imposed in 2022 and this year instructions have been given to impose a complete ban on all types of firecrackers.”

Gopal Rai said that on September 14th, a joint meeting involving 28 concerned departments will gather in order to frame a coordinated action plan against pollution.

“The meeting will include all senior representatives from the Environment Department, DPCC, MCD, NDMC, Cantonment Board, NHAI, Revenue, Delhi Jal Board, Delhi Fire Services, DTC, DMRC, DIMTS, Horticulture, DSIIDC, GAD, Power Department, DDA, CPWD, PWD, Traffic Police, Education, Industry, Forest, I&amp;FC, UD, DUSIB, Transport Department, and Development Department etc. The major goal of this meeting is to create a coordinated action plan in the fight against Delhi's pollution. Based on the key points outlined in the Winter Action Plan, specific responsibilities will be given to various departments during the meeting scheduled for September 14,” he added.

Supreme Court refuses to interfere with Delhi government's ban on firecrackers

Dozens of flights were delayed amid a security alert at London's Heathrow Airport, on Wednesday (September 13), after a 'suspected package' was spotted on the premises prompting scores of evacuations.

The Metropolitan Police later confirmed that the armed police officers were rushed to the scene and that the terminal was evacuated over the 'suspected package', as per local media reports.

"It was a suspicious bag, we attended, full stand down. No terror suspect," a Met Police spokesperson was quoted as saying by The Mirror.

According to reports, the incident, which lasted for about 20 minutes, triggered disruptions for many passengers. The Met Police said that the operation was stood down very quickly by the officers.

"Police responded to a suspicious package earlier today. The situation has been resolved...The airport is operating normally now," a Heathrow spokesperson was quoted as saying by The Mirror.

Transport of London (TfL) took to its official X handle and confirmed that the terminal's underground station was briefly shut during the probe.

British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak on Sunday (September 10) said that he had expressed concerns over Chinese interference in Britain's parliamentary democracy during his meeting with Chinese Premier Li Qiang on the sidelines of the G20 Summit in India's national capital Delhi, after the reported arrest of two alleged spies.

One of the people who was arrested on suspicion of spying for China was a researcher in the British parliament, reported UK newspaper, The Sunday Times.

"With regard to my meeting with Premier Li (Chinese Premier Li Qiang), what I said very specifically is that I raised a range of different concerns that we have in areas of disagreement. In particular my very strong concerns about any interference in our parliamentary democracy, which is clearly unacceptable," he stated while speaking to the media.

London's Metropolitan Police released a statement saying that two men were arrested in the month of March under the Official Secrets Act and had been released on bail until early October.

“The investigation is being carried out by officers from the Met’s Counter Terrorism Command, which has responsibility for investigations relating to allegations of Official Secrets Act and espionage-related offences,” the statement said.

"We discussed a range of things in areas where there are disagreements. This is just part of our strategy to protect ourselves, protect our values and our interests, to align our approach to China with that of our allies, like that of America, Australia, Canada, Japan and others. But also to engage where it makes sense. And actually, I think the right thing to do is take the opportunity to engage, to raise concerns specifically, rather than just shouting from the sidelines," he said.

As per news agency Reuters, a Chinese readout from the meeting welcomed Britain's extended pragmatic cooperation with China, adding Li had said that "the two sides should properly handle their differences". However, it did not mention anything about the spying accusation.

The Canadian prime minister, who attended the G20 Summit in New Delhi, was scheduled to depart on Sunday.

As per news agency ANI, airport sources in Delhi said that “a special plane of Canada PM suffered a technical glitch and it’s not in the schedule to fly.”

“Canadian authority in the country is exploring alternate fly mode,” ANI quoted an airport official as saying.

"Upon our departure for the airport, we were made aware by the Canadian Armed Forces that CFC001 was experiencing technical issues," a statement from the prime minister's office said, referring to the plane.&nbsp;

Telugu Desam Party (TDP) head N Chandrababu Naidu was sent to 14 days' judicial custody till September 23, on Sunday (September 10), for his alleged involvement in a Skill Development Corporation scam.

Vijayawada Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) court Judge Himabindu read out the judgement on former CM Chandrababu's case.

The judge ordered the remand of Naidu for 14 days to judicial custody and suggested taking the former CM to Rajahmundry Central Jail. Earlier on Sunday morning, Naidu was produced before the (ACB) court in Vijayawada.

The Telugu Desam Party (TDP) also released a statement calling for a state-wide Bandh&nbsp;on Monday (September 11) and will stage demonstrations against the arrest of Naidu.

As per officials, the ex-chief minister was produced before the court within 24 hours of his arrest.

On Saturday (September 9), Naidu was arrested by the Crime Investigation Department (CID) in Nandyala.

"CID has taken Chandrababu for a medical check-up after high blood pressure and diabetes were detected. We are approaching the High Court for bail," news agency ANI quoted Naidu's counsel as saying.

In a notice, the CID said that Naidu was arrested under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988. Stating that the offence was non-bailable, the CID said that Naidu could be released on bail, and he might have to seek bail through a court.&nbsp;

The officials have claimed that the alleged fraud has caused a huge loss in excess of Rs 300 crore&nbsp;to the state government.

On Wednesday, Naidu had claimed that he could be attacked or arrested soon. "Today or tomorrow they could arrest me. They may even attack me. Not one, they will do many atrocities," Naidu said during a public event in &nbsp;Anantapur district.&nbsp;

Thousands turned out early at over 570 polling stations across 187 islands. Maldivians were also voting at polling stations in India, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Britain and Abu Dhabi.

"We thought turnout might be low during the early stages. However, we have been surprised with many people queuing very early," Fuwad Thowfeek, the president of the Elections Commission told Reuters. "So far, everything is moving smoothly without any disruptions or delays."
