“Unfortunately, it’s not that clear-cut,” Bustle quoted Dr. Jocelyn Cheng, a neurologist in epilepsy and sleep medicine and vice chair of the public safety committee at the American Academy of Sleep Medicine as saying. “Sleep health is multifactorial, and attributing one specific cause for either a problem or a benefit oversimplifies it.”

A more appropriate name for cortisol would be "the energising hormone,” Bustle quoted Mark Wetherell, a professor of health psychobiology at Northumbria University in the United Kingdom who studies how stress impacts health, as saying.

Cortisol functions by diverting resources from specific parts of the body, such as the immune, digestive, and reproductive systems, in order to help a person respond to stimuli, said Wetherell.&nbsp;

As per WebMD, the increase in levels of cortisol can cause rapid weight gain, diabetes, muscle weakness, and skin that bruises easily.

“This is all fine in the short term and precisely what the system is designed to do, but if we get stressed too often or for too long, these systems become faulty and this can lead to the long-term problems we associate with stress,” said Wetherell.

<h2>Cortisol and sleep cycle</h2>

Just like a person's sleep cycle, cortisol follows a similar 24-hour cycle.

Usually, the cortisol levels plummet to their lowest during midnight, increase two to three hours after falling asleep and then continue to rise until they peak around the time a person wakes up.

Apart from its usual biological clock, cortisol innately plummets throughout the day and frequently fluctuates in response to anything that stimulates a person.

However, stress can mess up the circadian rhythm of this hormone resulting in an increase in this hormone's levels, making it a little too difficult for a person to fall asleep.&nbsp;

“In those lower levels of wakefulness when we’re not fully awake, one person who’s a good sleeper might be able to fall right back to sleep,” says Ivan Vargas, a licensed clinical psychologist and assistant professor of psychological science at the University of Arkansas who studies the role cortisol plays in keeping us up at night.

“But someone with insomnia may be primed to respond to even those low levels of wakefulness where their body is like, ‘Oh, we are waking up — a burst of cortisol.’”

“Sleep is just a much more complicated process than whether or not you're awake or asleep,” Bustle quoted him as saying. “This is incredibly understudied, so we still have more questions than we do answers.”

Elevated cortisol definitely affects the quality of your sleep, which is why keeping our behavioural patterns, which are the actual reason behind the fluctuation of this hormone's levels, in check is extremely important.&nbsp;

Michael Breus, a clinical psychologist known as “The Sleep Doctor,” agrees that “elevated cortisol levels are mostly self-induced.”

“Social media kind of blows things out of proportion. Cortisol is good. If we didn’t have it, we wouldn’t wake up in the morning. But it needs to be in some level of balance, which social media really misses,” Breus says. “People need to understand that there are things they can do to help manage that.”

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa confirmed his visit to India for the G20 Summit being held on September 9-10.

According to a statement released by the South African presidency on Thursday (September 7), President Ramaphosa will be backed by the Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, Naledi Pandor.

“The New Delhi Summit will focus on the key pillars of the Indian G20 Presidency, namely; Accelerated, Inclusive Sustainable and Resilient Growth; Accelerating Progress on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs); Mainstreaming Lifestyle for Environment (LiFE); Multilateral Institutions for the 21st Century; Technological Transformation and Public Infrastructure; Building Digital Public Infrastructure; Safeguarding International Peace and Harmony; Creating a More Inclusive World, Gender Equality and Empowerment of Women and; Creating a More Inclusive World,” a statement read.

It then called the Group of Twenty (G20) the premier forum for international economic cooperation, further adding that it plays a significant role in shaping and strengthening global architecture and governance on all major international economic issues.

South Africa is a member of the G20 and its participation seeks to provide a strategic foresightedness in designating an economic and international policy medium that will push and negotiate the most suitable outcomes for the country, Africa and the developing world, it added.

Last month, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi met President Ramaphosa during the BRICS Summit in Johannesburg from August 22-24.

Meanwhile, United States President Joe Biden is set to arrive in India in New Delhi on Friday (September 8).

Biden will have a bilateral meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi ahead of participating in the meeting of heads of the governments and states of the intergovernmental forum G20.&nbsp;

He will participate in the official sessions of the G20 Summit on Saturday and Sunday. He is expected to visit the Raj Ghat Memorial to Mahatma Gandhi on Sunday before departing for Vietnam. &nbsp;

There was no response from Mr Behera on the controversy. His comments attracted criticism from netizens.

"The collapse is complete. These superstitious fools will destroy whatever little was built in 70 years," Sandeep Manudhane, an entrepreneur and IIT Delhi alumni, said on X.

Gautam Menon, a professor of biophysics, said, "In the current dispensation, having views like those of the director of IIT Mandi featured here is a feature, not a bug. It's simply sad." This is not the first time Behera has stir a row with his controversial comments. Last year, he hit the headlines for claiming that he was involved in an act of exorcism to rid his friend's apartment and family of "evil spirits" by chanting "holy mantras".

Finland's government survived a parliamentary no-confidence vote on Friday that had been called over a racism scandal that has rocked the ruling coalition since it took office in June.

An official tally showed 106 members of the 200-seat parliament backed the coalition, while 65 members supported the no-confidence motion proposed by three opposition parties. The remaining members either abstained or gave blank votes.

Within days of assuming power the four-party, right-wing government was in turmoil after Finnish media revealed that several ministers from the far-right Finns Party had posted statements in the past that were widely condemned as racist.

In an attempt to stave off collapse, the government last week agreed on a policy to combat intolerance and brought it up on Wednesday for a plenary discussion.

Prime Minister Petteri Orpo of the conservative, pro-business National Coalition Party said he believed the government's new anti-discrimination policy had persuaded parliament to support the cabinet.

"I am really satisfied that the confidence was clear, everyone has been able to see that this summer has been challenging around this discussion of racism," Orpo told reporters after the vote.

"The government does not accept any form of racism," he added.

Parliament voted separately over confidence in Finance Minister Riikka Purra and Economic Affairs Minister Wille Rydman, both of the Finns Party, and they also won parliamentary backing.

Purra, who is the Finns Party's leader, apologised in July for anonymous comments she acknowledged she had posted online about 15 years ago, although she said many had been taken out of context.

The Finns Party's first economy minister Vilhelm Junnila resigned at the end of June, just 10 days into his term in office, after being accused of having made repeated references to Adolf Hitler and Nazis.

The party soon replaced him with Rydman, whose former girlfriend then leaked to Finland's largest daily Helsingin Sanomat his private messages that contained racial slurs.

Finnish government survives no-confidence vote over racism scandal

UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak arrived in New Delhi on Friday (September 8) to attend the G20 Summit being held on September 9 and 10. He is accompanied by his wife Akshata Murty.

Shortly after landing in the national capital, the UK PM made some important remarks on various subjects one being the concerns around pro-Khalistan extremism.

This is Sunak's very first visit to India after he assumed office in October last year.

<h2>‘No form of extremism acceptable,’ says Sunak</h2>

Sunak asserted that no form of extremism or violence is acceptable in the United Kingdom and the government in his country is working closely with India to tackle Khalistani extremism.

"No form of extremism or violence like that is acceptable in the UK. And that's why we are working very closely with the Indian government to particularly tackle 'PKE' Pro-Khalistan Extremism,” he said in a conversation with news agency ANI.

"Our security Minister recently was just in India talking to his counterparts. We have working groups together to share intelligence and information so that we can root out this kind of violent extremism. It's not right and I won't tolerate it in the UK," he added.&nbsp;

<h2>‘I am a proud Hindu’</h2>

The British Prime Minister, while expressing his pride for his Hindu roots, said that he hopes he finds the time to visit a temple during his stay in India.

“I didn't have time to celebrate Janmashtami. But hopefully, as I said I can make up for that if we visit a Mandir this time,” he added.

“It is something that is important to me. I think faith is something that helps everybody who has faith in their lives, particularly when you have these stressful jobs like I do. Having faith gives you resilience, gives you strength that is important and it provides an outlook on life which I find particularly valuable,” Sunak further added.&nbsp;

He also called his visit to India 'fantastic' and said that he has enjoyed his first few hours here.&nbsp;

“It is fantastic for me to be back in India. Obviously, it's personally very special for me to be here, particularly with Akshata, and we thoroughly enjoyed the first few hours of our trip so far,” he said.

“Well you know obviously you know my wife is from Bangalore, we got married in Bangalore. We used to spend lots of time together before we had children in Delhi and were trying to figure out if we can go to one of our old favourite restaurants this evening,” Sunak said.

Sunak said that the G20 has been a huge success for India and it is the "right country at the right time to be hosting this”.

"I'm very keen to support Prime Minister Modi and making sure that this G20 is an enormous success for India which I know it will be and this has been a great year for India more generally," he said.

"Both Modi ji and I are keen to see a comprehensive and ambitious trade deal concluded between our two countries. Both of us think there is a good deal to be done. But trade deals always take time, they need to work for both countries. Although we have made enormous progress there is still hard work to go," he said.

PM Modi holds bilateral talks with Mauritian counterpart Pravind Jugnauth, Bangladesh PM Sheikh Hasina

France's highest administrative court on Thursday ruled in favour of a school ban imposed on traditional over-garments worn by some Muslim women, called abayas.&nbsp;

Terming the ban as legal, it rejected complaints of it being discriminatory and said that it would not incite hatred against the community.

French government last month announced a ban on abaya in schools saying that it violated the rules on secularism in education.

The headscarves worn by the Muslim community have already been banned on&nbsp;grounds that they constitute a display of religious affiliation.&nbsp;

An association representing the Muslim community had filed a motion with the State Council, which is France's highest court for complaints, against state authorities, over a demand against the ban on the abaya and the qamis, its equivalent dress for men, stating that the ban was discriminatory and could incite hatred against Muslims.

However, the State Council, after examining the motion, rejected the arguments. stating that wearing the abaya "follows the logic of religious affirmation".

It added that the decision was based on French law which did not allow anyone wearing visible signs of any religious affiliation in schools.

It said that the ban by the government did not cause "serious or obviously illegal harm to the respect for personal lives, freedom of religion, the right to education, the well-being of children or the principle of non-discrimination".

<h2>Schools send home girls for refusing to remove abayas</h2>

Earlier this week, dozens of girls were sent back home by French schools for refusing to remove their abayas.

Education minister Gabriel Attal told the BFM broadcaster on Tuesday (September 5) that nearly 300 girls showed up Monday morning (Sep 4) wearing an abaya, defying a ban on the Muslim dress.&nbsp;

The minister said that most agreed to change out of the dress, but 67 refused and were sent home.&nbsp;

Attal said the girls refused entry were given a letter addressed to their families saying that "secularism is not a constraint, it is a liberty".&nbsp;

The minister said that if they showed up at school again wearing the dress, there would be a "new dialogue".&nbsp;

Late on Monday, French President Emmanuel Macron defended the measure, saying there was a "minority" in France who "hijack a religion and challenge the republic and secularism", leading to the "worst consequences" such as the murder three years ago of teacher Samuel Paty for showing Prophet Mohamed caricatures during a civics education class.&nbsp;

"We cannot act as if the terrorist attack, the murder of Samuel Paty, had not happened," he said in an interview with YouTube channel HugoDecrypte.&nbsp;

The rest of the G20, meanwhile, are demonstrating that we will turn up and work together to pick up the pieces of Putin's destruction," Sunak told reporters.

The Downing Street spokesperson said the UK will use “every opportunity” to show its support for Ukraine and further foster global support as well.

“India has a vital role to play as the world's largest democracy in calling out Russia's assault on human rights and indeed democracy itself. We will use meetings with Modi or elsewhere to encourage them to use that influence to bring an end to Putin's brutal invasion," Sunak's spokesperson said.

The India-UK free trade agreement (FTA) negotiations are likely to also feature highly during the Modi-Sunak bilateral discussions, having just completed 12 rounds of negotiations but with no set timeframe for its conclusion.

India has lifted additional duties on approximately half a dozen American products, such as chickpeas, lentils and apples, which were levied in the year 2019 in response to the United States' decision to raise tariffs on certain steel and aluminum products.

The Indian Finance Ministry announced the removal of the duties on the products through a notification dated September 5. The products included chickpeas, lentils (Masur), apples, walnuts in shells and almonds fresh or dried, as well as almond shelled.

This move comes before United States President Joe Biden's arrival in India for the G20 Summit. The event on September 9-10 would be preceded by Biden's bilateral meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

During the Indian prime minister's state visit to the United States in June, both countries agreed to call off six WTO (World Trade Organization) disputes and also eliminate the retaliatory tariffs on certain US products.

As part of the agreement, India will be doing away with additional duty on chickpeas (10 per cent), lentils (20 per cent), almonds fresh or dried (Rs 7 per kg), almonds shelled (Rs 20 per kg), walnuts (20 per cent), and apples fresh (20 per cent).

In July, Minister of State for Commerce and Industry Anupriya Patel, in a written reply to the Rajya Sabha stated that the government has determined to withdraw retaliatory customs duties on the import of almonds (fresh or dried, in shell), walnuts, chickpeas, lentils, apples, medical diagnostic reagents, and boric acid.&nbsp;

The removal of retaliatory tariffs or cuts in import duty with the United States did not result in a loss to India, she had said.

The US is the largest trading partner of India. In 2022-23, the bilateral goods trade increased to USD 128.8 billion as against USD 119.5 billion in 2021-22.

The number of people diagnosed with cancer under the age of 50 has increased globally over the span of last 30 years but the reason behind it is not yet clear, revealed a new study on Wednesday (September 6).

As per a study published in the journal BMJ Oncology, the cases of cancer among people aged between 14 to 49 years ascended by nearly 80 per cent, from 1.82 million to 3.26 million, between 1990 to 2019.

Though some experts warned that the probable reason behind the increase in number was also linked to the growth in population, previous studies have highlighted that the disease is becoming more common among people under 50 years of age.

Poor diet, smoking and alcohol have been named as major factors behind this by the international team of researchers behind the new study.

But "the increasing trend of early-onset cancer burden is still unclear," they added.

A little over one million people under the age of 50 lost their lives to cancer in the year 2019, which went up by 28 per cent from the year 1990, said the study.

<h2>Deadliest cancers</h2>

The deadliest cancers that claimed the lives of many included breast, windpipe, lung, bowel and stomach cancers, according to the study.

Breast cancer was the one that was mostly diagnosed over the three decades. But the cancers that rose rapidly were of the nasopharynx, where the back of the nose meets the top of the throat and the prostate. Meanwhile, liver cancer fell by 2.9 per cent a year.

The researchers used data from the 2019 Global Burden of Disease Study, examining the rates of 29 different cancers in 204 countries.

According to the study, the developed countries had a higher rate of under-50s diagnosed with cancer.

This could suggest that richer countries with better healthcare systems catch cancer earlier, but only a few nations screen for certain cancers in people under 50, the study added.

It said that factors like poor diet, smoking and drinking, genetic factors, physical inactivity and obesity could also contribute to the trend.

Modelling predicted that the number of global cancer cases in those under 50&nbsp;will rise further 31 per cent by 2030, mostly among people aged 40-49.

The experts who weren't involved in the study said that the gradual upsurge in the number of deaths compared to the cases was presumably due to advancements in early detection and treatment.

Dorothy Bennett, a researcher at the University of London, highlighted that the world's population rose by roughly 46 per cent between 1990 and 2019, which could be another reason behind the increasing cases.

Two doctors at Queen's University Belfast, Ashleigh Hamilton and Helen Coleman, said it was "crucial" to work out what was behind the increasing cases.

"Full understanding of the reasons driving the observed trends remains elusive, although lifestyle factors are likely contributing, and novel areas of research such as antibiotic usage, the gut microbiome, outdoor air pollution and early life exposures are being explored," they said in an editorial linked to the study.

Number of people under 50 diagnosed with cancer has surged worldwide, reveals study

From the fight against poverty to education access, from political representation to economic opportunity, the world is "failing women and girls," the United Nations warned in a report on gender equality released Thursday.&nbsp;

The report from UN Women reviewed the progress made on the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), adopted by the body's members in 2015, which were meant to create a better world for all by 2030.

The results of the review are grim.

"When we look at the data, it does look like the world is failing to advance and achieve gender equality," deputy executive director of UN Women Sarah Hendriks told AFP.

"And it is becoming, I'd say, an increasingly distant goal," she added.&nbsp;

The goal focused on gender equality aims by the end of the decade to eliminate gender discrimination, violence against women, forced marriages and genital mutilation, to make domestic work more equal, to guarantee access to reproductive health care and to ensure women's participation in political and economic life.

But "halfway to 2030, the world is failing women and girls," the report warns, with most of the goal's targets falling behind.&nbsp;

Every year, 245 million women over age 15 are victims of physical violence by their partners, one in five women are married before age 18, women spend 2.8 more hours per day doing unpaid housework than their male counterparts and women represent only 26.7 per cent of all lawmakers worldwide.

To change those trends, it would cost some $360 billion in additional investments per year in 50 developing countries, representing some 70 per cent of the world's population, the agency estimates.&nbsp;

That money would "enable the lifting of the entire SDG agenda," Hendriks said.&nbsp;

"We know what needs to be done and the world needs to pay for it," she said.&nbsp;

"And if we make gender equality that specific objective of development, the trajectory can change," she said, by "strengthening mutual accountability to place women and girls at the centre."

In July, the UN rang the alarm on the SDGs overall, saying they are "in peril" and calling for a "rescue plan" ahead of a summit set for September 18 and 19.&nbsp;

According to the UN Women report, the outcomes for many global development goals are worse for women than they are for humanity overall.&nbsp;

For example, at the current rate, 575 million people will still live in extreme poverty by 2030, a far cry from the eradication the UN hoped for. And of those, 342 million of them will be women, or about 8 per cent of the women in the world, according to the report.
