Republican presidential hopeful Vivek Ramaswamy, in an&nbsp;interview&nbsp;on Wednesday (September 6), declined to answer MSNBC host Mehdi Hasan on being asked to elucidate his 'danger to democracy' remark about former United States President Donald Trump.

Ramaswamy started off his interview on a cordial note with host Hasan, saying, “You and I both grew up as kids of Indian immigrants who love to debate, super confident, perhaps overconfident in our views.”

“But here’s the difference. I kind of know my limits … what have you done that even qualifies you to be president of the United States?”&nbsp;

Citing his business career, Ramaswamy said that he was “an outsider who deeply understands the law and the constitution in this country”.

The conversation took a turn when Hasan asked Ramaswamy specifically about an Alzheimer’s drug that was pushed by the Republican presidential candidate but failed clinical trials.

Both of them then argued over remarks made by Ramaswamy to the Atlantic, in which he expressed collusions about 9/11 and the January 6 foray on Congress, which Trump stirred, after which Ramaswamy took to X (formerly known as Twitter) and on 12 January 2021 wrote, “What Trump did last week was wrong. Downright abhorrent. Plain and simple.”

Hasan then asked, “Is Donald Trump, as you say now, the best president of the 21st century? Or is Trump, as you’ve said in the past, in your books, on Twitter, a ‘sore loser’, who is a danger to democracy, and who did downright abhorrent and egregious things on January 6’? Which one is he, Vivek?”

To which Ramaswamy responded saying that Trump was the best president indeed that the country had in the 21st century, and said he “would have made the same judgments that he has made every step of the way”.

Hasan said, “You say he behaved in downright abhorrent behaviour that makes him a danger to democracy. Downright.”

Ramaswamy then referred to a Wall Street Journal column from 11 January 2021 in which he said, “Censorship was the real cause of what happened on January 6.”

“What did Donald Trump do that in your view was downright abhorrent? Second time I’ve asked that,” said Hasan.

Ramaswamy said, “The thing that I would have done differently if I were in his shoes, I would have declared re-election on January 7.”

Hasan said, “That’s not what I asked, Vivek. What did Trump do that was egregious, quote, ‘downright abhorrent’ and a danger to democracy? Can you just explain to our viewers your words?”

Ramaswamy then said that what happened on January 6 was “reprehensible” and “a true leader should have handled that situation” differently.

Hasan said: “I want to hear from your mouth. You’re scared of him. Why won’t you say what he did that was downright abhorrent?”

Ramaswamy said, “You are stitching together three things.”

Hasan said, “I want you to answer my question, Vivek. Three times I’ve asked it. What did Trump do that was downright abhorrent? It’s a simple question. It’s your words, it’s onscreen, what did he do that was downright abhorrent?”

Ramaswamy said, “I believe that failing to unite this country falls short of what a true leader ought to do. That is why I am in this race, to do things differently than any prior president has done them.”

The video of the interview went viral and took the social media by storm.

UK police descended on a yoga class in central England after a member of the public spotted people lying on the floor and reported a "mass killing".

Officers rushed to the spot with car sirens blaring only to find members of the class quietly meditating.

The Seaside Cafe inside the North Sea Observatory in Chapel St Leonards said a worried member of the public raised the alarm on Wednesday night after becoming concerned.

"If anyone heard the mass of police sirens in Chapel St Leonards at 9.30 pm last night then please be reassured," a Facebook post said.

"They were on their way to the Observatory after someone had reported a mass killing in our building, having seen several people laying on the floor… which actually turned out to be the yoga class in meditation".

The cafe regularly hosts yoga classes in the evenings. "We are not part of any mad cult or crazy clubs," it added.

Lincolnshire police confirmed the call was made "with good intentions".

UK yoga class quietly meditating mistakenly reported as 'mass killing'

Russia on Wednesday released a statement saying that it will very soon finalise the route of the China-bound Power of Siberia 2 gas pipeline, which is intended to traverse through Mongolia. This huge project is aimed at delivering more natural gas to Beijing.

As per reports, Moscow is making efforts to bolster trade with Asia as its economic ties with the Western countries have withered due to its military offensive in Ukraine.

"The decision for the Power of Siberia-2 gas pipeline's route is at the final stage," Russia's deputy prime minister and top energy official Alexander Novak said in an interview with the Russian magazine Energy Policy.

The proposed pipeline will run through southern Siberia near the city of Achinsk and turn east towards Krasnoyarsk and Irkutsk before reaching the Mongolian border, Novak said.

He said it was "assumed" that the pipeline would pass near the eastern Siberian cities of Achinsk, Krasnoyarsk, Kansk, Sayansk, Angarsk and Irkutsk, then through the Buryatia region south of Lake Baikal, reaching the Mongolian border near the settlement of Naushki.

In the month of March this year, Russian President Vladimir Putin, during Xi Jinping's visit to Moscow, said that "all agreements" between the two countries had been made for the pipeline.

Earlier this week, as per Russian news agency Interfax, Putin termed Xi Jinping a 'friend' and said he will meet him soon, following reports that the Kremlin leader was planning to visit Beijing in the month of October.

"Quite soon we will have events, and there will be a meeting with the president of the People’s Republic of China," said Putin, according to Interfax.&nbsp;

"He (Xi) calls me his friend, and I am happy to call him my friend because he is a person who does a lot for the development of Russian-Chinese relations."&nbsp;

Kremlin foreign policy aide Yuri Ushakov said in July that Putin planned to visit China for the Belt and Road Forum in October, while Security Council Secretary Nikolai Patrushev said that China had invited the Russian leader as the "main guest" at the event.&nbsp;

A teenager lost his life late on Wednesday (September 7), after a collision between his motorbike and police vehicle west of Paris, said the police sources.&nbsp;

The 16-year-old is reportedly accused of failing to comply with police officers, said a police source, further adding that he was being "followed at a distance" by a police car through Elancourt, a town around 30 kilometres (almost 20 miles) outside Paris.

He banged into "another police vehicle" at an intersection, the source added, as per news agency AFP reports.&nbsp;

The collision between the vehicles took place at around 6:40 pm (1640 GMT), said a second police source, according to AFP.

Prosecutors said that initially, the teenager was revived from respiratory and cardiac arrest by first responders and brought to the hospital, but later, he succumbed to the injuries that he sustained in the crash.

The prosecutors further added that they were investigating the allegations levelled against the deceased by the police and also the involuntary homicide at the wheel.

They also said that two police officers were held in custody pending a manslaughter probe and were being interrogated.

As per AFP reports, extra police force was deployed in Elancourt, a town of 25,000 people, to thwart any probable unrest.

Government spokesman Olivier Veran said the investigations would determine the "exact circumstances" of Wednesday's collision.

"Obviously I am calling for calm.... I am calling for restraint and careful consideration," he said on France Inter radio.

"Regardless of how dramatic a situation is, it needs answers that we do not yet have."

Wednesday's incident came almost a month after a 17-year-old boy was shot by a police officer in the Paris suburb of Nanterre for fleeing a traffic check which triggered massive riots in the country.

In August, three police officers were charged over the death of a 27-year-old man in the southern French city of Marseille during nationwide riots.

Five officers were arrested over the incident out of which two were released quickly.

The 27-year-old who lost his life in the riots was identified as Bendriss, who was a married man and a father of one. His widow is now expecting a second child. As per reports, Bendriss died after feeling unwell while riding a scooter.

His postmortem showed traces on his chest, of what as per reports could be the impact of a shot from a blast ball, known in French as an LBD and commonly used by the country's police.

Prosecutors have said they consider it "probable" that the man's death was "caused by a violent impact to the thorax caused by the firing of a projectile of the blast ball type".

Brussels is working through a legislative plan to construct more stringent rules for big tech, asserting that it needs to safeguard European consumers online.

The move has reportedly also been taken to create competition in the market which is primarily dominated by the US tech giants.

Services that will be impacted by the stricter laws include Apple's App Store; Meta's Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp; Google's YouTube video platform and Chrome browser; as well as Apple's Safari. Operating systems from Apple, Microsoft, Google and Alphabet's Google Maps, Play and Shopping will also be affected by the new law.

<h2>'Gatekeepers'</h2>

Targeting the world's leading tech companies' market influence, the Digital Markets Act (DMA) is one of the world's most stringent pieces of legislation which is aimed at making it more manageable for users to move between contending services, such as social media platforms, internet browsers and app stores.

The EU Commission specified 22 services of the top tech companies as "gatekeepers" of online services.

<h2>Apple reacts</h2>

Apple, while expressing concerns over the tough new EU curbs, spoke&nbsp;Wednesday about&nbsp;the risks posed by the landmark digital markets law.

"We remain very concerned about the privacy and data security risks the DMA poses for our users. Our focus will be on how we mitigate these impacts," &nbsp;Apple said in a statement, referring to the EU Digital Markets Act.

Microsoft released a statement accepting its designation as gatekeeper, while also welcoming the commission's decision to open a probe into a possible exemption of Microsoft's services Bing, Edge and Microsoft Ads from the DMA.

Facebook parent company Meta said it was assessing the commission's designation.

Last month was not only the hottest August scientists ever recorded but also the second most warm month measured after July, said the World Meteorological Organisation and the European climate service Copernicus on Wednesday (September 6).

August was nearly 1.5 degrees Celsius (2.7 degrees Fahrenheit) warmer than pre-industrial averages.&nbsp;

As per a statement by the WMO and Copernicus, the oceans, which constitute 70% of the Earth's surface, were recorded at about 21 C (69.8 F), which is the hottest ever and have set high-temperature marks for three consecutive months.

Scientists have blamed human practices like the burning of coal, oil and natural gas for climate change.

Climatologist Andrew Weaver said that world leaders and governments were also to be blamed for the current climate situation.&nbsp;

“It’s time for global leaders to start telling the truth,” the Associated Press quoted Weaver, a professor at the School of Earth and Ocean Sciences at the University of Victoria in Canada, as saying. “We will not limit warming to 1.5 C; we will not limit warming to 2.0 C. It’s all hands on deck now to prevent 3.0 C global warming — a level of warming that will wreak havoc worldwide.”&nbsp;

Copernicus, which is a unit of the European Union’s space programme, has records going back to 1940, but in the United Kingdom and the United States, global records go back to the mid-1800s and those weather and science agencies are soon anticipated to report that the summer was a record-breaker.

“What we are observing, not only new extremes but the persistence of these record-breaking conditions, and the impacts these have on both people and planet, are a clear consequence of the warming of the climate system,” Copernicus Climate Change Service Director Carlo Buontempo said.

While the world's air and oceans were setting records for heat, Antarctica persisted with setting records for low amounts of sea ice, the WMO said.

2023 is likely to be the hottest year in human history, said the EU climate monitor in a statement on Wednesday.

As per a report released by the European Union's Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S), the average global temperature in June, July and August was 16.77 degrees Celsius (62.19 degrees Fahrenheit), exceeding the earlier record in the year 2019 which was 16.48C.

"The three months that we've just had are the warmest in approximately 120,000 years, so effectively human history," news agency AFP quoted C3S deputy director Samantha Burgess as saying.

"Looking at the additional heat we have in the surface ocean, the probability is that 2023 will end up being the warmest year on record," Burgess said.

The average global temperature recorded through the first eight months of 2023 is the second-hottest, with only 0.01C below the benchmark 2016 level.

If the Northern Hemisphere has a "normal" winter, "we can almost virtually say that 2023 will be the warmest year that humanity has experienced," Burgess said.

“The dog days of summer are not just barking, they are biting,” United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said in a statement.

"Scientists have long warned what our fossil fuel addiction will unleash," he added. "Our climate is imploding faster than we can cope, with extreme weather events hitting every corner of the planet."

Guterres further said that the surging temperatures demand a surge in action.

"Leaders must turn up the heat now for climate solutions," he said.

PM Modi reacts to controversial 'Sanatana Dharma' remark by Udhayanidhi Stalin, says it needs proper response

Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, who on Saturday (September 2) declined to serve as a member on the panel formed by the Centre to analyse the issue of ‘one nation, one election’, gave his consent to be a part of the committee before the names of members came out, news agency ANI reported citing a government source.

He retracted from the panel saying that its “terms of reference have been prepared in a manner to guarantee its conclusions”.

He wrote a letter to Home Minister Amit Shah on Saturday, questioning the Centre’s motives in forming the committee.

“I have just got to know through the media and a Gazette notification has appeared that I have been appointed as a Member of the High-Level Committee on simultaneous polls to the Lok Sabha and the Vidhan Sabhas. I have no hesitation whatsoever in declining to serve on the Committee whose terms of reference have been prepared in a manner to guarantee its conclusions. It is, I am afraid, a total eyewash,” Chowdhury said.

He called the move by the Centre as “constitutionally suspect, pragmatically non-feasible”.

“The sudden attempt to thrust a constitutionally suspect, pragmatically non-feasible and logistically unimplementable idea on the nation, months before the general elections, raises serious concerns about ulterior motives of the government,” he said.

The committee comprises former President Ram Nath Kovind, who is also the Chairman, Home Minister Amit Shah, Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, former Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha Ghulam Nabi Azad, former Finance Commission Chairman NK Singh, former Lok Sabha Secretary General Subhash C Kashyap, Senior Advocate Harish Salve and former Chief Vigilance Commissioner Sanjay Kothari.

As per a statement by the government, Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal will attend the meetings of the High-Level Committee as a special invitee.

Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday denounced DMK leader Udhayanidhi Stalin over his remarks while addressing a gathering in poll-bound Rajasthan.

"For the last two days, the INDIA alliance has been insulting 'Sanatana Dharma'. Leaders of DMK and Congress are talking about ending 'Sanatana Dharma' just for vote bank politics. This is not the first time they have insulted our 'Sanatana Dharma," he said.

Udhayanidhi Stalin accuses BJP of ‘twisting’ his statement after sparking row over 'Sanatana Dharma' remark

Pope Francis, on Sunday (September 3), urged the Catholics in China to be "good Christians and good citizens" while also terming them as "noble" people, in his overture to the country to ease restrictions on religion.

Francis made these comments towards the end of a Mass in the Mongolian capital, further calling up the former and current archbishops of Hong Kong, Cardinal John Tong Hon and Archbishop Stephen Chow, to flank him as he spoke.

"These two brother bishops - the emeritus of Hong Kong and the current bishop of Hong Kong. I would like to take advantage of their presence to send a warm greeting to the noble Chinese people," he said in Italian.

"I wish the best for all the (Chinese) people, to go forward, to always progress. And to Chinese Catholics I ask to be good Christians and good citizens," he said.

<h2>'Good Christians and good citizens'</h2>

The "good Christians and good citizens" phrase used by Francis on Sunday is the one that the Vatican frequently uses in order to reassure communist governments that giving more freedom to Catholics would only help their countries' social and economic advancement.

Francis, on Saturday, seemed to send a more inferential message, telling a gathering of Catholic missionaries that governments had "nothing to fear" from the Catholic Church.

"Governments and secular institutions have nothing to fear from the Church's work of evangelisation, for she has no political agenda to advance," said the pontiff, without mentioning China explicitly.

Earlier on Sunday, Francis assembled leaders of different religions who were operating in Mongolia in an intimate theatre.

"Religious traditions, for all their distinctiveness and diversity, have impressive potential for the benefit of society as a whole," the Argentine Jesuit told the group, which included Christians, Muslims, Buddhists, and representatives of Shamanism, among others.

After his speech, a head monk at a Buddhist monastery in Mongolia, Natsagdorj Damdinsuren, said the pope's visit "proves the solidarity of the human race declaring peace together".&nbsp;

"I am just a humble Buddhist monk but for me, war and conflict are the most tragic events of our time. I guess other religions agree with me," Damdinsuren said.&nbsp;
