After the successful launch of India's first solar mission, Aditya L1, Nigar Shaji, the director of the project, on Saturday (September 2), said that it was more like a dream come true.

"It feels like a dream coming true. I am extremely happy that Aditya L-1 has been injected successfully (into the designated orbit) by the PSLV. Aditya L-1 has successfully embarked on its 125-day journey," news agency ANI quoted Shaji as saying.

"As and when the Aditya L-1 fulfils all its mission objectives, it will be an asset for the country as well as the global scientific community. I want to thank the entire (ISRO) team for their support and guidance in making this mission possible," the project director of the Aditya L1 mission added.

The Indian Space Research Organisation, after the successful launch of Aditya L1 from Sriharikota in Andhra Pradesh, released a statement saying that the payload covering the spacecraft was separated as it left Earth's atmosphere.

"The third stage of the separation of PSLV carrying the Aditya-L1 orbiter has been completed," as per ISRO.

"The launch of Aditya-L1 by PSLV-C57 is accomplished successfully," it added.

The agency said that the vehicle was successful in placing the satellite precisely into its intended orbit. It further added that the country's first solar observatory has begun its journey to its destination, the L1 point which lies between the Earth and the Sun.

President Droupadi Murmu, meanwhile, said the launch "will help us better understand space and celestial phenomena."

India's Adani Group hit back Thursday at a new report investigating alleged manipulation of the conglomerate's share prices, accusing its authors of conspiring to drive down its stocks for profit.&nbsp;

The globe-spanning ports-to-power conglomerate saw around $120 billion wiped from its market value after US short-seller investment firm Hindenburg Research accused it of "brazen" corporate fraud.&nbsp;

On Wednesday, the Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project (OCCRP) said it had uncovered financial documents backing Hindenburg's claims that Adani had used offshore tax havens and related party transactions to drive up its share price.&nbsp;

The report said two men who had served as directors in Adani Group companies had spent years trading stock in the conglomerate "through offshore structures that obscured their involvement".

Adani said in a Thursday statement that it "categorically" rejected the OCCRP's findings and accused the investigative journalism network of seeking to profit by "driving down our stock prices".

"We have complete faith in the due process of law and remain confident of the quality of our disclosures and corporate governance standards," it said.&nbsp;

"In light of these facts, the timing of these news reports is suspicious, mischievous and malicious."

A meteoric rise in Adani Group's share prices -- its main listed unit shot up more than 1,000 percent in five years -- funded the conglomerate's breakneck expansion.

Billionaire founder Gautam Adani, who was until this year the world's third-richest man, lost two-thirds of his net worth in the wake of the Hindenburg allegations.

He is considered a close associate of Hindu-nationalist Prime Minister Narendra Modi, a fellow native of Gujarat state.

Opposition parties and other critics say their relationship helped Adani to unfairly win business and avoid proper oversight.

His empire's rapid expansion into capital-intensive businesses has raised alarms, with Fitch subsidiary and market researcher CreditSights warning last year that Adani Group was "deeply overleveraged".

Shares in the conglomerate's flagship Adani Enterprises fell dramatically after the January allegations by Hindenburg, a short-seller that not only tracks corporate wrongdoing but also makes money by betting on stocks falling.

They remain 35 percent down from the start of the year, falling another 2.4 percent in Thursday morning trade on the Bombay Stock Exchange.

India's securities regulator is expected to soon release the findings of a probe into Adani Group launched in the wake of the Hindenburg allegations.

India's Adani hits back at new 'stock manipulation' report

Japan this year recorded the country's highest-ever average temperature since the inception of records in 1898, the weather agency on Friday (September 1) said.

"Average temperatures in Japan are the highest for summer since 1898," the agency said.

From the month of June to August, the agency recorded "considerably higher" average summer temperatures in "northern, eastern, and western Japan".

"The average temperature anomaly in Japan, based on observations at 15 locations, was +1.76 degrees C, far exceeding that of 2010 (+1.08 degrees C), which was the highest since statistics began in 1898 and the highest for summer," it said in a statement.

"Warm air tended to cover northern Japan and warm air flowed in from the south, resulting in considerably higher average summer temperatures in northern, eastern, and western Japan," it added.

The agency further added that in many locations, such as Itoigawa City "not only maximum temperatures but also minimum temperatures reached record highs".&nbsp;

On August 10, the city in Japan's Niigata region recorded a low of 31.4 degrees Celsius (88.5 Fahrenheit), which was the highest daily minimum temperature in all of Japan.&nbsp;

The agency said that as compared to years with particularly high average summer temperatures (2010, 2013, 2018, and 2022), the number of days with soaring temperatures significantly increased from late July onward, taking the total to the highest number since 2010.

<h2>Heat-related deaths in Japan</h2>

July this year was officially declared as the country's warmest month in a century with at least 53 people succumbing to heatstrokes and nearly 50,000 needing emergency medical attention.

The Japan Times last month published a detailed report on heat-related deaths. Citing official statistics, it said that the number of heatstroke-related deaths increased from an average of 201 people a year between 1995 and 1999, to an average of 1295 from 2018 to 2022.&nbsp;

According to the report, the health ministry data showed that the elderly were the ones who were most impacted.&nbsp;

Other parts of the world also witnessed record temperatures this summer. As per EU's climate observatory Copernicus, July 2023, which saw heatwaves and fires around the world, was the hottest month ever registered on Earth.

In France this month late-summer records toppled as a "heat dome" bore down on much of the country, hitting the southern half and Mediterranean coast especially hard. &nbsp;

The High Court in Karnataka, on Friday (September 1), declared the elections of JD(S) Member of Parliament from Hassan, Prajwal Revanna as null and void.

In his judgment, Justice K Natarajan, partly allowed the two petitions filed by G Devarajegowda, a voter from the constituency, and A Manju, the then BJP’s defeated candidate (2019 LS polls) and also directed the Election Commission of India to take action against Prajwal Revanna for election malpractice as per the Conduct of Election Process Rules, as per news agency PTI report.

Revanna, who is the grandson of JD(S) patriarch and former Prime Minister H D Deve Gowda, is the only candidate from the party to have won the Lok Sabha elections in Karnataka in the year 2019.

Manju contested the Lok Sabha election against Revanna on a BJP ticket and lost. He then subsequently joined JD(S) and is presently an MLA.

The petitions had claimed that Revanna was involved in election malpractice and also did not declare his purchases to the Election Commission.&nbsp;

On Friday, Justice K Natarajan dictated the operative portion of his judgment in the court.

The high court however dismissed the prayer of the petitioners to declare Manju as the winning candidate as he himself was "involved in corrupt practices".

"The prayer of the petitioners in both the cases to declare A Manju as returned candidate is rejected in view of the findings that he himself (is) involved in corrupt practices,” the HC said.

The HC further also directed the Election Commission to take action against Prajwal’s father H D Revanna and brother Suraj Revanna for committing corrupt practices during time of elections.

“H D Revanna and Suraj Revanna are named in the complaint under the Representation of People’s Act for having committed corrupt practice at the time of election and also A Manju, who is also involved in corrupt practice. Election Commission to issue notice and comply with Conduct of Election Process Rules,” the HC said.

Karnataka HC declares JD(S) MP Prajwal Revanna's 2019 election null and void

Kyiv police, on Friday (September 1), reported bomb threats to the schools in the Ukrainian capital as children returned to schools for their second academic year since Russia's aggression.

Kyiv's police said its forces were reviewing educational buildings.

"We have received information about explosives in Kyiv's schools," news agency AFP quoted police spokeswoman Yulia Girdvilis as saying.

"All educational institutions are being checked by Kyiv police forces with the involvement of the State Emergency Service," she said.

The police also said that they would be collectively making a decision with the schools if any evacuations were to be made, further calling on the people to "stay calm."

Ukraine's education ministry in a statement said that nearly four million students are returning to learning, both virtually and in the classroom.

<h2>Thousands of schools in Ukraine damaged by attacks: Authorities</h2>

As per the authorities, big cities and towns across Ukraine are regularly subjected to artillery, drone and missile attacks and thousands of schools have been damaged or destroyed.

"And our educators, teachers and lecturers will teach. Because knowledge and culture are what distinguish us from the enemy."

Andriy Sadovy, the mayor of the western city of Lviv, while releasing a picture of students behind computers, said that pupils will be taught to fly drones.

"This is our new reality," he said on social media.

Kyiv launched its long-anticipated counteroffensive in June but has acknowledged tough battles as it struggles to break through heavily fortified Russian positions.

When questioned how long the process takes, Wissanu said, "It is purely based on royal grace. The procedure from the government is not long, but it depends on the length of (the king's) consideration."

After landing in Bangkok last week, the first public act of Thaksin was to prostrate himself in homage before the king's portrait at the airport.

Ukraine's military intelligence chief, on Friday (September 1), said that the recent drone attack on an airport in Russia, that damaged several military transport planes, was carried out from within Russian territory.

"The drones used to attack the 'Kresty' air base in Pskov were launched from Russia," Kyrylo Budanov wrote on social media Friday.

"Four Russian IL-76 military transport planes were hit as a result of the attack. Two were destroyed and two were seriously damaged," he added.

Budanov said that the defence ministry had been using the aircraft to transport troops and cargo.

The Kremlin released a statement earlier this week saying that the military experts were working to find out which routes drones are taking in order "to prevent such situations in the future".&nbsp;

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov had earlier said that Russia was trying to find the place from where the drones were launched so that further strikes could be prevented. President Vladimir Putin was immediately informed in the case as per protocols in such cases of "massive attacks", Peskov said.

Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, on Thursday (August 31), after his visit to Tokyo's biggest fish market said that he would put together measures in order to support the fishing industry hit by China's ban on Japanese seafood.

To fund the measures, the government will inject additional funds of approximately several tens of billions of yen (hundreds of millions of dollars) from the government's budget reserves for the current fiscal year, the Nikkei reported on Thursday.

"I will put together measures given the variety of opinions I heard from the fishing industry today," Kishida said to reporters following a visit to the Toyosu fish market on Thursday, adding that requests included support to help fishing companies develop new sales avenues and holding discussions with China.

<h2>"Safe and delicious" meal from Fukushima</h2>

On Wednesday (August 30), Kishida consumed what he called "safe and delicious" fish from Fukushima. &nbsp;

He also invited his ministers to his office for a sashimi lunch made up of seafood caught from the Fukushima Prefecture.&nbsp;

Japan PM Kishida vows to put together measures to help fishing industry after China seafood ban

The United States, on Wednesday (August 30), urged the Gabonese army to preserve civilian rule and also voiced concern after the coup leaders came to power following disputed elections, which declared President Ali Bongo Ondimba as the winner.

"We urge those responsible to release and ensure the safety of members of government and their families and to preserve civilian rule," State Department spokesman Matthew Miller said in a statement.

"The United States is deeply concerned by evolving events in Gabon. We remain strongly opposed to military seizures or unconstitutional transfers of power," Miller said.

The statement by the US came hours after military officers in Gabon appeared on television and declared "an end to the current regime", placing President Bongo under house arrest.

His family had ruled the oil-rich African state for 55 years.&nbsp;

<h2>China calls for guarantee of President Bongo's safety</h2>

China, in a statement, called for "all sides" in Gabon to guarantee the safety of President Ali Bongo Ondimba following the military coup.

"China is closely following the developing situation in Gabon," foreign ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin said.

US says 'deeply concerned' by events in Gabon, urges military to 'preserve civilian rule'

Russia on Wednesday (August 30) vetoed the United Nations Security Council resolution, which was drafted by France and UAE, on the sanctions against Mali.

Thirteen out of the UN Security Council's 15 members were in favour of the proposal that would have extended the UN sanctions and independent monitoring for another year.

However, Russia exercised its veto power to block the proposal which was led by Mali's former colonial power France and the United Arab Emirates, whereas China abstained from casting a vote.

Russia's ambassador, Vassily Nebenzia, underlined that the sanctions were first put in place in the year 2017 in order to back a peace agreement in the long-troubled Sahel country.

"It is fundamentally important that UN Security Council sanctions deal purely with that issue and not be used as a means of foreign influence on Mali, and that is something that the panel of experts of the Security Council has been involved in," he said.

Western powers condemned Russia for redressing after the panel spoke precariously about actions by Malian forces and their "foreign security partners", a clear reference to Wagner.

Earlier this month, a report submitted to the Security Council said that the violence against women "allegedly committed by the Malian Armed Forces and their foreign and local allies is systematic and organised."

Sanctions without experts to monitor them would make the entire effort "ineffective," US envoy Robert Wood said.

"Russia seeks to eliminate the panel of experts' mandate to stifle publication of uncomfortable truths about Wagner's actions in Mali which require attention," Wood said.

“For this reason, the UK deeply regrets Russia’s reckless use of the veto. This will reduce the Council’s oversight and engagement on Mali’s peace process at a critical juncture,” he added.

Riau Islands police spokesperson Zahwani Pandra Arsyad said that the suspects were operating from a shophouse, a building with mixed commercial and residential use, located in an industrial park.&nbsp;

Primarily, they were targeting fellow Chinese nationals, who as per the reports, were called over the internet and tricked into transferring money. A probe into the matter revealed that the gang had been carrying out such operations since early this year, trapping dozens of victims in China. It is not yet clear as to how much money they have accumulated since then.

“We are still investigating this case, including whether there are any Indonesians among the victims,” Arsyad said, adding that none of the suspects can speak or write the Indonesian language. “If there are none, we would deport all of them immediately.”

Arsyad said that the members of the cartel had come from China to Indonesia for three months at a time since January this year, and were committing crimes from Indonesia as China had clamped down on their networks.

He then added that the Indonesian police are working closely with immigration officials and China’s Ministry of Public Security in dealing with the suspects.

In the year 2019, the US Federal Trade Commission announced that romance-related fraudulent activities were the ones behind generating more losses than any other consumer scams reported to the agency. In a statement, it had said that in such scams criminals usually trap victims online, via either a dating site or social media.

In a report released on Wednesday (August 30), the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights said that the criminal gangs have compelled dozens of people in Southeast Asia into participating in illicit online scams, including false romantic ploys, bogus investment pitches and illegal gambling schemes.

It cited “credible sources” that at least 120,000 people in strife-torn Myanmar and roughly 100,000 in Cambodia “may be held in situations where they are forced to carry out online scams.”&nbsp;

Tech giant Baidu launched China's first public artificial intelligence chatbot on Thursday, with ERNIE trained to censor highly sensitive topics for the ruling Communist Party such as the Tiananmen crackdown.

Beijing issued new regulations this month for China's AI developers that maintain the government's tight control on information while allowing them to stay in the race with the likes of Microsoft and ChatGPT maker OpenAI.

Baidu led several companies in rolling out AI chatbots on Thursday: SenseTime opened its service for registration, and two other firms -- Baichuan Intelligent Technology and Zhipu AI -- said their bots were online and open to the public.

"We are thrilled to share that ERNIE Bot is now fully open to the general public starting August 31," Baidu said in a statement on Thursday.

"In addition to ERNIE Bot, Baidu is set to launch a suite of new AI-native apps that allow users to fully experience the four core abilities of generative AI: understanding, generation, reasoning, and memory."

The chatbot was first released in March but its availability was limited.

<h2>'Let's talk about something else'</h2>

Chinese generative AI apps must "adhere to the core values of socialism" and refrain from threatening national security, according to the guidelines published this month.

When tested by AFP on Thursday, ERNIE Bot easily answered mundane questions such as "What is the capital of China?" and "Do you have any hobbies?"

But on sensitive topics such as China's bloody clampdown on pro-democracy protesters at Beijing's Tiananmen Square in 1989, it said: "Let's change the topic and start again."

Tiananmen is a particularly sensitive subject in China and online information and discussion about it is strictly censored.

When asked about Taiwan, a self-ruling island that China claims as its territory, ERNIE Bot offered a longer answer.

"Taiwan is part of the sacred territory of the People's Republic of China," it responded. "China's sovereignty and territorial integrity cannot be violated or divided."

Then, it said: "Let's talk about something else."

<h2>Global AI race</h2>

By making ERNIE widely available, Baidu will be able to gain "massive" human feedback to improve the app at a swift pace, CEO Robin Li was quoted as saying in the statement.

Generative AI apps, including chatbots such as ERNIE, are trained on vast amounts of data as well as their interactions with users so they can answer questions, even complex ones, in human-like language.

The rapid success of US-based OpenAI's ChatGPT -- which is banned in China -- sparked an international race to develop rival apps, including image and video generators, but also widespread alarm about the potential for abuse and disinformation.

Under Chinese regulations, AI developers must conduct security assessments and submit filings on their algorithms to the authorities if their software is judged to have an impact on "public opinion", according to the rules.

They are also required to label AI-generated content.

Baidu is one of China's biggest tech companies but has faced competition from other firms such as Tencent in various sectors.

In addition to AI, it has also looked to grow its cloud computing business and develop autonomous driving technology.

Baidu shares were up 3.2 per cent in Hong Kong at around 0430 GMT on Thursday.
