The United Kingdom's former Defence Secretary Ben Wallace&nbsp;stepped down from his position on Thursday (August 31).

Wallace, who had last month announced that he would resign in the subsequent UK government cabinet reshuffle, was appreciated by Prime Minister Rishi Sunak in a letter.

Sunak praised the "dedication and skill" Wallace brought to the role that saw him take a leading role in Western allies' support for Ukraine against Russia.

"You have served our country with distinction," Sunak wrote, adding that he had seen "before others did what Vladimir Putin's true intentions in Ukraine were".

"Your determination to get Kyiv weaponry before the Russians attacked had a material effect on the ability of the Ukrainians to thwart the invasion." 
 
Meanwhile, education minister Claire Coutinho got promoted to the cabinet as energy and net zero secretary, replacing Shapps.&nbsp; 
 
Similarly,&nbsp;Tory MP David Johnston was appointed as the parliamentary under secretary of state at the Department for Education, replacing&nbsp;Claire Coutinho after her promotion&nbsp;in the mini reshuffle.

He also said that already $24 million had been dedicated to the removal of hazardous material left behind in the fire's wake.

“When (First Lady) Jill and I visited Maui last week, we saw firsthand the magnitude of the loss, lives have been dramatically changed. If anybody in Maui is listening, you lost everything. I mean, they lost everything. And we're doing everything we can to move heaven and earth to help you recover, rebuild, and return to your lives. We've already dedicated $24 million to the removal of hazardous material left behind in the fire's wake.”

The federal government is set to import the sugar at an exorbitant price of PKR 220 per kilogramme and the load will further be passed on to the population, which is already suffering from inflation and will be compelled to pay excessive prices, the Geo News said.

The current situation in the country arose after sugar mill owners misled the government by securing permission for export and reassuring that the country has 'sufficient' stock for domestic use.

Punjab Food Department said that it has a carryover surplus stock of sugar of almost 1 million metric tonnes. However, a spokeswoman for the department warned that in the coming days, the country could witness a potential sugar crisis.

As per reports, the authorities are now only left with an option to use the surplus stock in order to mitigate the issue. Regardless, doing so will ultimately result in imported sugar being sold on the market, leading the consumers to pay PKR 220 per kg for sugar rather than the set amount of PKR 100 per kg.

As per sources cited by Geo News, the Trading Corporation of Pakistan (TCP)&nbsp;has already written to Pakistan's commercial attaché in Brazil to establish arrangements for the import of 100,000 metric tonnes of sugar from the South American country.

Downing Street later released a statement saying that the prime minister was running on a tight schedule and was due to hold talks with Kuwait Crown Prince Sheikh Meshal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah on Tuesday afternoon.

A Downing Street spokesperson said: “The Prime Minister regularly uses all forms of travel."

“His travel plans will vary and are always decided with consideration to the most efficient and best use of his time, in the interests of the taxpayer.”

Two IndiGo flights, on Tuesday (August 29), reported mid-air glitches respectively in a time difference of a few hours.

The first engine glitch incident occurred on a flight that took off from Madurai to Mumbai earlier in the day.

A few hours later, the second incident was reported on a flight that jetted off from Kolkata to Bengaluru when one of the aircraft's engines shut down. Both the aeroplanes manage to land safely.

“Engine 2 Stall occurred and Engine2 oil chip detected warning came. Engine2 was shut down as per the checklist and the aircraft landed safely,” DGCA said in a statement.

IndiGo also released a statement about the incident reported on its aircraft flying from Madurai to Mumbai, stating it had a technical issue prior to landing in Mumbai.

“The pilot prioritized the landing in Mumbai. The aircraft is held at Mumbai and will be back in operations after necessary maintenance. We regret the inconvenience caused to the passengers,” IndiGo said.

Officials had said both these Indigo aircraft were running on Pratt and Whitney engines.

<h2>IndiGo pilot collapses and dies at boarding gate</h2>

Earlier this month, an IndiGo pilot collapsed and died at the boarding gate of Nagpur Airport in India hours before he was about to board an aircraft to fly it to Pune.

Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), the regulatory body said the pilot was well-rested prior to the flight despite having operated on two sectors on Wednesday (August 16).

“The pilot had on Wednesday (Aug 16) operated two sectors - Trivandrum-Pune-Nagpur - early morning, between 3 am and 7 am. Thereafter he had 27 hours of rest and was scheduled to operate four sectors on Thursday with departure at 1 pm. Departure from Nagpur was to be his first sector of the day," a senior DGCA official was quoted as saying by Times of India newspaper.&nbsp;

After the incident, IndiGo released a statement and paid condolences to the family of the deceased.&nbsp;

“We are saddened at the passing of one of our pilots in Nagpur earlier today. He took unwell at Nagpur airport and was rushed to the hospital where he unfortunately passed away. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and loved ones.”

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday (30 August) restated the claims that he made in the past about China "invading" Indian territory in Ladakh.

Gandhi called China's act of including Arunachal Pradesh and Aksai China as a part of its territory in its latest edition of the 'Standard Map" a "serious issue".

"I have been saying this for many years... What the prime minister has said, I have just returned from Ladakh... What the prime minister has said...That not an inch of land has been invaded..it is totally false," news agency ANI quoted him as saying.

He then claimed that all the people of Ladakh know that China has "intruded upon" Indian land.

On being questioned about China including Arunachal Pradesh and Aksai China in its new map, Rahul Gandhi said, "The question of the map is a very serious one. But they (China) have captured our land. The prime minister should also speak on this issue."

During his visit to Ladakh earlier this month, Gandhi slammed the Centre saying that its claim that not an inch of Indian land was taken by China's People Liberation Army (PLA) troops "is not true".

He further asserted that the local residents claim that Indian territory was infringed upon and taken by the Chinese troops, adding that it was a matter&nbsp;of concern.

"The locals here are concerned about China taking our land. They have said that the Chinese troops took away their grazing land. However, the PM says not an inch of land was taken away. This is not true, you can ask anyone here," Rahul had said.&nbsp;

China has snatched India's land, Rahul Gandhi reiterates claim after Beijing releases incorrect map

UK Foreign Secretary James Cleverly, during his state visit to Beijing on Wednesday (30 August), said that he made it a point to raise human rights concerns at all of his meetings that were scheduled with top Chinese officials.

"I've had a number of conversations with senior representatives of the Chinese government and I have raised human rights in every single one of those meetings," Cleverly said Wednesday.

"This is an issue that is discussed extensively not just bilaterally, but at the United Nations," he said.

"I think the Chinese government understand the UK is consistent in our approach... and I will keep raising these issues with (them)."

Beijing's foreign ministry brushed off questions about the role of human rights in the discussions.

"Hong Kong and Xinjiang are purely China's internal affairs and brook no interference from other countries," ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin said at a regular press briefing.

Cleverly, who is the very first UK foreign minister to visit China in five years, held talks with Chinese Vice-President Han Zheng and is scheduled to meet top diplomat Wang Yi.

Previously, the foreign office said that his meetings would include conversations on China's crackdown on freedoms in the former British colony of Hong Kong as well as Beijing's alleged rights abuses in the Xinjiang and Tibet regions.

<h2>Britain 'clear-eyed' about disagreements with China</h2>

Cleverly further said that the United Kingdom was "clear-eyed" about the areas where it would disagree with China.

"We are clear-eyed about the areas where we have fundamental disagreements with China and we raise those issues when we meet," he told broadcasters.

"But I think it's important to also recognise that we have to have a pragmatic, sensible working relationship with China because of the issues that affect us all around the globe."

Last month, China had condemned the UK for safeguarding fugitives after Cleverly slammed the Hong Kong government for offering bounties for information that led to the seizure of democracy activists who were based overseas.

In addition, on Sunday (August 27), the state-backed Global Times newspaper ignited an intense altercation after its demand for the British Museum to "return Chinese cultural relics for free".

Bongo, who visited Beijing in the month of April this year, was greeted by Chinese President Xi Jinping as an "old friend".

Xi also hailed Bongo's "significant achievements" in development.

Bongo, in turn, thanked China for its "valuable assistance in promoting Gabon's economic diversification and industrialisation", a readout from state news agency Xinhua said.

"The whole area, starting with Central African Republic, then Mali, then Burkina Faso, now Niger, maybe Gabon, it's in a very difficult situation and certainly the ministers ... have to have a deep thought on what is going on there and how we can improve our policy in respect with these countries," he said.

"This is a big issue for Europe," he added.

India Celebrates Onam With Full Fervour

Scientists have discovered a new treatment option for the aggressive type of childhood cancer that forms in muscle tissue.

In a breakthrough, the scientists have successfully brought about rhabdomyosarcoma cells to change into normal, healthy muscle cells.

“Every successful medicine has its origin story. And research like this is the soil from which new drugs are born,” said Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory Professor Christopher Vakoc.

"The cells literally turn into muscle," Vakoc said.

"The tumour loses all cancer attributes. They're switching from a cell that just wants to make more of itself to cells devoted to contraction. Because all its energy and resources are now devoted to contraction, it can't go back to this multiplying state," he added.

Cancer is a disease that develops when cells divide uncontrollably and begin to destroy body tissues.&nbsp;

Rhabdomyosarcoma, a type of cancer that is usually seen in children and adolescents, normally originates in the skeletal muscle when cells therein mutate and start procreating and spreading all over the body. &nbsp;

One treatment that has shown positive results for the lethal pediatric cancer is differentiation therapy which arose when scientists detected that leukaemia cells are not completely mature, equivalent to undifferentiated stem cells that have not yet comprehensively evolved into a specific cell type.

This therapy compels those cells to continue their development and discern into specific mature cell types.

Vakoc and his team created a new genetic screening technique. By deploying genome-editing technology, the researchers tracked the genes that, when disrupted, would compel RMS cells to become muscle cells.&nbsp;

Then a protein called NF-Y came into the picture. With NF-Y harmed, the scientists detected an incredible mutation.&nbsp;

The new relationship discovered between NF-Y and RMS may set forth the chain reaction required to bring differentiation therapy to patients. The technology could also be practical for other cancer types. If so, scientists may someday work out how to turn other tumours into healthy cells.

“This technology can allow you to take any cancer and go hunting for how to cause it to differentiate,” Vakoc explains. “This might be a key step toward making differentiation therapy more accessible.”

Previously, Vakoc along with his team successfully transformed Ewing sarcoma cells into healthy tissue cells.&nbsp;

The Ewing sarcoma and RMS discoveries were supported by local families who had lost their family members to these cancers. “They came together and funded us to try to find, with some desperation, a new therapeutic strategy,” said Vakoc.&nbsp;

The study has been published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

And research like this is the soil from which new drugs are born,” said Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory Professor Christopher Vakoc. "The cells literally turn into muscle," Vakoc said. "The tumour loses all cancer attributes. They're switching from a cell that just wants to make more of itself to cells devoted to contraction. Because all its energy and resources are now devoted to contraction, it can't go back to this multiplying state," he added. Cancer is a disease that develops when cells divide uncontrollably and begin to destroy body tissues. Rhabdomyosarcoma, a type of cancer that is usually seen in children and adolescents, normally originates in the skeletal muscle when cells therein mutate and start procreating and spreading all over the body. One treatment that has shown positive results for the lethal pediatric cancer is differentiation therapy which arose when scientists detected that leukaemia cells are not completely mature, equivalent to undifferentiated stem cells that have not yet comprehensively evolved into a specific cell type. Vakoc and his team created a new genetic screening technique. By deploying genome-editing technology, the researchers tracked the genes that, when disrupted, would compel RMS cells to become muscle cells. Then a protein called NF-Y came into the picture. With NF-Y harmed, the scientists detected an incredible mutation. The new relationship discovered between NF-Y and RMS may set forth the chain reaction required to bring differentiation therapy to patients. The technology could also be practical for other cancer types. If so, scientists may someday work out how to turn other tumours into healthy cells. “This technology can allow you to take any cancer and go hunting for how to cause it to differentiate,” Vakoc explains. “This might be a key step toward making differentiation therapy more accessible.” Previously, Vakoc along with his team successfully transformed Ewing sarcoma cells into healthy tissue cells. The Ewing sarcoma and RMS discoveries were supported by local families who had lost their family members to these cancers. “They came together and funded us to try to find, with some desperation, a new therapeutic strategy,” said Vakoc. Scientists successfully induce aggressive cancer cells to transform into healthy cells

Amid a rise in the number of suicide cases in the Indian city of Kota, the officials on Monday (28 August) chaired a meeting in which decisions like 'half-day study, half-day fun' on one weekday, identification of students with suicidal tendencies and psychological counselling were taken.

The meeting, which was chaired by Bhawani Singh Detha, principal secretary (higher and technical education), through video conference, was also attended by representatives of coaching institutes and hostel association, according to the officials.

Bhawani Detha is also the chairman of a committee formed on the direction of Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot to look into the matter. The committee is set to visit Kota on Saturday (September 2) to take stock of the situation.

<h2>Other crucial measures to curb suicide cases</h2>

In an effort to reduce the burden of courses on the students, the coaching institutes have been asked to create a committee of subject experts. They have also been asked to regularly hold motivational sessions online by experts and upload the same on social media.

According to the officials, in the meeting, the decision was taken that the coaching institutes will hold 'half-day study, half-day fun' every Wednesday and will not conduct any routine tests for the next two consecutive days.

In addition, a form will be created to assess the mental status of the students which they will be asked to fill on a daily basis.

The poor performers and absentees will be identified and will be provided psychological counselling.

The meeting was conducted after two NEET aspirants committed suicide on Sunday (27 August).

The other officials who attended the meeting included Kota Collector O P Bunkar, SP Sharad Chaudhary, Additional Collector (Administration) Rajkumar Singh, and Additional SP Bhagwat Singh Hingad.

"It is an alarming situation as so many students are committing suicides," Kota district collector Bunkar said&nbsp;after the meeting on Monday afternoon.

Kota City SP Choudhary proposed to set up an exclusive police station for students.

"As an expansion of students' police helpdesk already functional, I gave the idea of setting up a police station for students in Kota to address their concerns," Sharad Chaudhary told reporters.
